T

he new look modern interior to a Grade II* listed church in Bolton will be unveiled to the public on 6th December. It follows a £4.9m adaptive reuse project, which has been ten years in the making. The regeneration project recently won an English Heritage Angel Award for The Best Rescue of Any Other Type of Historic Building or Site. Two futuristic free-standing ‘building within a building’ structures have been erected inside the church. These ‘pods’ will house a coffee shop and restaurant, meeting and event spaces, and be a centre for heritage learning. Pod 1 is a three story 10.5m high structure on the south side of the nave. It comprises offices and a kitchen on the ground floor, a production suite, meeting rooms and toilets on the first floor, and classrooms on the second floor. Pod 2, on the north side, has a single large events space/ conference room on the first floor, which is raised up on six columns to accommodate an “open air” coffee shop and restaurant within the nave of the church on the ground floor. According to Manchester firm OMI Architects, who masterminded the project, the apparently organic form has connections with both the original church interior and its urban context. All Souls was built at the junction of two terraced streets, an attempt to make the community church visible and prominent. Although the local street configuration has changed over the church’s 130 year existence, the church’s sleek new pods will serve as a reminder of the church’s heritage: contrasting the geometry of the urban grain with the church’s rectilinear plan form. Constructed over a period of just over a year, all materials and machinery were brought in and out through the church’s two-metre wide west doorway. This limitation resulted in the use of prefabricated SIPS panel construction, limiting the need for heavy lifting equipment during construction.

The Churches Conservation Trust is hoping that the award-winning design of All Souls with its multipurpose community use, will become a national model for the 200 inner city churches at risk (English Heritage at Risk Register 2014) Consistent with the project’s commitment to the church’s unique 19th century architecture, this ‘ship in a bottle’ project brings modern architecture into a heritage setting without compromising the historic fabric of the church. The new buildings are set back from the exterior walls of the church to enable an appreciation of the finely constructed panelled roof and an entirely unobstructed view of the church’s east end – a design made possible thanks to the unique monolithic single span space of the original church.

For the first time ever, visitors will be able to get up and close with the church’s historic features via a high level open deck circulation system, designed to celebrate the church’s architectural features. As well as adding much needed amenity space within the building, the new design’s stairways and raised walkways take visitors on a journey around the historic building, allowing visitors to get much closer views of the windows, war memorials and unique timber roof.

Souls with its multi-purpose community use, will become a national model for the 200 inner city churches at risk (English Heritage at Risk Register 2014) Nick Berry, OMI Architects, said: “Respect for the original design of the church and its urban context has been key to the inspiration for the new design, but also the strongly held view that the new interventions should not be subservient to surrounding architecture. The unusually wide 16m single span of the nave has allowed for the insertion of relatively free form buildings, but instead of mirroring the historic fabric of the church, we have based our design on the concept of ‘contrast’. Whilst the new architecture is deliberately different from that of its host, the dialogue between the two serves to amplify the architectural qualities of both. It’s a voyage of discovery as you move through the building reading different elements of the existing architecture against the backdrop of the new.” Crispin Truman, Chief Executive of The Churches Conservation Trust, said: “Urban churches like All Souls pose a particular challenge, as their size makes repairs expensive and finding sustainable new uses tricky. But when such important historic buildings sit unused and at risk we have a duty not only to save them, but also to help local people make use of them. This arresting and dramatic new design enables All Souls to be used in new ways and it demonstrates not only how to enable new uses of a Grade II* church whilst maintaining its heritage, but also how enrich the lives of those who live around such buildings. Forget the ‘Bilbao Effect’ as a byword for ‘wow-factor’ architecture, future generations will be talking about the ‘Bolton Model’ for the regeneration of unloved urban churches.”

The project should give the building another 100 years of life, transforming it from unloved 19th century church into a state-ofthe-art community building for people of all faiths or none. The project should give the building another 100 years of life, transforming it from unloved 19th century church into a state-ofthe-art community building for people of all faiths or none. Throughout the construction programme, The National Heritage Training Group funded six paid training placements to economically disadvantaged Bolton residents, on top of a series of weekly technical days for locals which focused on key heritage conservation skills. This unique project is the latest innovative conservation scheme from The Churches Conservation Trust to provide a sustainable use to historic churches, with others including the conversion of St Paul’s Church, Bristol into a circus school. Next in line for the CCT is the transformation of St Mary at the Quay, Ipswich into a wellbeing heritage centre, opening in early 2016.

About All Souls’ Church, Bolton All Souls’ Church, was once a hub of the community in Crompton area of Bolton. It was built in 1881 by an Evangelical mill owner for a town of predominantly cotton mill workers. The 20th century saw a sharp decline in the British cotton industry, and the congregation gradually dwindled, whilst the area became increasingly multi-cultural. The church closed in 1986. Neglected, vandalised and plundered for its lead it fell into disrepair for two decades until The Churches Conservation Trust teamed up with the local community to restore it to its pivotal role at the heart of Bolton. The church will be open from 9am – 10pm daily, with a coffee shop on the ground floor and an at-table restaurant service during peak hours. The first floor has a mix of event and tenanted space - the main large conference room is flexible, and can be used as a dance studio or cinema. The building will be run by a new charity, All Souls Bolton, and will also have a music and film license. Beanstalk, the national educational charity, is the first tenant.

About The Churches Conservation Trust The Churches Conservation Trust (CCT) is the national charity protecting historic churches at risk. The charity has saved over 340 beautiful buildings which attract almost 2 million visitors a year. The CCT collection includes irreplaceable examples of architecture, archaeology and art from 1,000 years of English history. The Trust is the operator of the third largest heritage estate in charitable ownership in the UK and has an international award-winning reputation in heritage conservation and regeneration. All CCT churches are listed, mostly Grade I and II*, and some are Scheduled Ancient Monuments. Without the care of the CCT, the buildings they look after might have disappeared entirely. Instead they are enjoyed as social, tourism, educational or cultural resources, kept open, in use, and living once again in the heart of communities. Established under Ecclesiastical Law on 1 April 1969 the charity receives its churches in the form of ‘vesting’s’ from the Church Commissioners. All the CCT’s churches remain consecrated and are used for occasional worship.

THE IMPORTANCE OF OLD FASHIONED BRICK MAKING By Graham Irving, Managing Director of Bovingdon Bricks

In recent years many historic crafts and trades have gradually declined or been separated from mainstream building in the face of the demand for mass production and more cost effective processes.

M

odern brick making, in particular, has developed far beyond its small-scale regional origins. Today’s enormous high-tech factories have the capability to produce immense quantities of perfectly uniform and colourcontrolled bricks through fast, efficient, fully automated processes. However, as technology continues to advance, traditional craftsmanship is in danger of becoming lost in time.

H istorical brickmaking

The heritage of brickmaking as we know it goes back to the 14th centuries, when most English towns had their own brickworks and, due to the bulky nature of the clay, the bricks were often made by hand on site. In those days, it was very much a seasonal business. The clay would be dug locally in the late autumn and then left out in the fields during the winter to sour (a process by which the weather would break down soluble materials), then in spring through to autumn

the bricks were made. Originally, the clay was mixed by hand and then later, during the ‘age of mechanisation’ ‘pugged’ in pug mills or wet pans (depending on whether the clay was dense or soft), which would have been horse powered and eventually steam-driven in the eighteenth/ nineteenth centuries. The pugs of clay were then moulded and dried naturally on ‘hacks’ (boards) in the open air until they were ready to be fired. The whole process could potentially take up to nine months. Bricks from one part of the country would have a completely different colour and texture from those made in another area, because of the chemical differences in the local clay, the type of sand used in the mould and the colour of that sand. The appearance of the bricks would also be influenced by differences in hand moulding, the fuel used for the firing and the temperature and position of the bricks in the kiln. All these variable factors would have contributed to

the rather quirky and irregular character of much of the historic brickwork across the British Isles.

T he decline in regional brickworks Unfortunately, with the exhaustion of some of the local clay reserves and the need for fully automated volume production, not to mention the severity of this recent recession, many small-scale regional brickworks have had to close down. This has left the industry with fewer craftsmen capable of making bricks of real historic character. Hertfordshire, for instance, was once a thriving brickmaking region. However, where there used over fifteen brickworks, only Bovingdon Bricks now remains, which continues to use traditional methods of brickmaking in order produce unique and unpredictable characteristics, which cannot be achieved through modern production techniques.

P reservation of age-old processes

of the sort that was popular in the eighteenth and nineteenth centuries. Not dissimilar to the old ‘clamp’ styled kilns, it is rectangular in structure, with fire holes at the side. When the kiln fires at temperatures of 950 - 1400°C, the bricks at the centre where it is hottest develop a dark hue and those on the edges come out in lighter shades. Random ‘kiss marks’ are also created naturally, where the bricks touch each other, depending on how they have been stacked. These historic methods produce Berry Multis of great character with cracks, creases, folds and a richness of colour that can range from flaming orange through red and purple to a subtle grey brown.

E nhancing the built environment Traditionally made bricks are not only an important link with the past and the conservation of our historic buildings, but their unique character also enhances contemporary buildings, ultimately contributing to the architectural environment of the future.

Essentially, its traditional wet mud processes have not changed substantially since the brickworks was founded in the 1920s. The clay is still dug locally (though not by hand) and the soft pugs of clay are mixed in a Victorian styled wet pan dating from 1935, before passing through rollers to crush any flint or debris. The pugs are then thrown into wooden moulds and dried for three to six days in gas-fired drying sheds before being stacked, again by hand, in the kilns. Unlike modern production methods, there is very little artificial or mechanical intervention. Even the old berry machine, which delivers the pugs of clay onto the bench for the hand-throwers, dates back 80 90 years. Importantly, the natural irregularity and colour of the bricks is not determined by the use of stains, pigments and sophisticated weathering techniques used by modern manufacturers nor are the bricks tumbled to achieve a reclaimed appearance. The character is created by the technique of each individual brickmaker and the intensity of the heat and fluctuations in air-flow in the kiln. This is even influenced to some degree by day-to-day changes in the weather conditions. Bovingdon is one of the few brickworks to still use an open top ‘updraught’ Scotch kiln

Traditionally made bricks are not only an important link with the past and the conservation of our historic buildings, but their unique character also enhances contemporary buildings, ultimately contributing to the architectural environment of the future.

pen plan living and working has gathered significant popularity in recent years – not least in terms of creating light, bright, well ventilated spaces. But as design trends move on and our needs change, flexible space is becoming an increasingly important prerequisite. Here, Steve Duffell from Divisions looks at how movable walls are opening opportunities in the refurb market and dividing the competition...

With the increase of open plan living and working in recent years, architecture and products have been designed to maximise space and improve functionality. But the trend towards open plan has often been at the expense of small, enclosed spaces such as private offices, meetings rooms and social spaces. The result has been communication going into overdrive, often reaching untenable levels, reducing productivity and hindering creativity and flexibility. In a bid to address these issues, architects and fit out contractors are increasingly looking to the moveable wall market to retrofit open spaces with flexible design solutions. Once associated with function rather than aesthetics, now extensive research and development and new technology is driving growth in high spec moveable wall design, resulting in innovative new products that respond to and manage their environments and achieve high acoustic and insulation values to boot. It’s a move that’s being embraced particularly by companies looking to expand and adapt existing premises, offering new opportunities for redesigning and renovating internal space without the additional cost of creating new purpose-built premises. Primarily, movable walls help to effortlessly redesign and adapt existing space,

temporarily forming separate living spaces, meeting rooms, private workstations and social and creative spaces within minutes – something that’s proved a great success for the likes of Google, Yahoo and BMW. This is vital in the refurb market, where retrofitting domestic or office space is as much about managing the internal constraints of the building as it is about creating new spaces and layouts and providing much needed flexibility in relatively rigid layouts. What’s more, from glass you can write on, to glazed panels that turn opaque at the click of the button, moveable walls are beginning to change not only the way space can be configured but also the way we interact with interior design features. Increasingly companies and developers are looking beyond immediate space requirements, for opportunities and materials that both complement the existing look and feel of a home or office and improve interactivity. Whether that’s creating wallpapered feature walls or installing magnetic writable glass, the very facings of a wall can play an instrumental role in blending aesthetics with function, and design with interactivity.

to 50db – thanks to significant product innovation which sets the system mechanism on the outside and allows for more space on the inside – and the movable wall system was installed using an existing movable wall trackway, reducing both installation time and overall project costs. Of the six panels, four have a magnetic, writable glass finish – a vital interactive addition to Divisions’ product range and an important feature of a modern creative workspace. Not only can this glass be used to sketch out diagrams of complex systems and fit-outs for trainees but

it can also be used to help display training tools and materials using magnetic pins, increasing the function of the training room and removing clutter from desk space. From flexible configuration, to interactivity, the Morgan Lovell project highlights how important modern design and innovative space solutions can be in helping to improve space and create value – both practically and commercially. Flexible spaces can give both families and companies room to grow and space to adapt their needs. Ultimately, existing homes and offices can offer a relatively blank canvas and it’s design and innovation that helps to create desirable space that we want to live and work in.

For example, at a Divisions project for fit-out expert Morgan Lovell, we were tasked with helping to refurb their showroom at 16 Noel Street, creating a new training space within a large existing meeting room. Not only was the focus on maintaining a flexible and easily adaptable working and meeting space but it was also an opportunity to reflect the personality and creativity of the brand through design.

A CLEAN LINEAR FEELING MADE EVEN EASIER Ecophon’s Focus Lp, an acoustic ceiling that encapsulates the beauty of linear design, has evolved. Now available in both standard and premium options, the system now features a new Connect Wall spring and Connect Space bar connector, which further sharpens the product’s accuracy and stability.

F

ocus Lp is a unique product, as the only acoustic ceiling on the market that creates a neat linear feeling in a room, to provide a sense of direction. In its Standard option, the product is available in various panel sizes; most recently, a 300mm panel has also been added to give even more choice for installers. Furthermore, by utilising the additional options offered by Focus Lp Premium, designers can discreetly integrate all technical ceiling components such as lighting, ventilation, sprinklers and smoke detectors to create true, clean lines. There is also the option to integrate Ecophon’s own Line LED lighting, a recessed luminaire suitable for various applications including open-plan work spaces and walkways. Line LED also works well in lunch areas or restrooms, conference and meeting

areas. Line’s high level of output and fully integrated solution gives a distinctive expression to the whole ceiling. When it comes to the well being and productivity of employees, noise can be a major issue. In an open plan office, reducing sound propagation is often key. Focus Lp helps to minimise unnecessary distraction by reducing both sound levels and shortening the distance speech travels. Articulation Class (AC) value specifies how well the product reduces sound levels for speech and with an AC value of 180 Focus Lp is ideal for openplan offices. Will Jones, Marketing Manager at Ecophon comments, “This is a truly unique acoustic ceiling system. In fact, it is the only product on the market that is available to accomplish both aesthetic requirements in terms of linear design, while achieving high levels of acoustic performance. The acoustic element

T

he existing bedsits were poorly laid out with a large amount of circulation space, being difficult to heat and with poor acoustics between units. In order to improve the internal layout, increase the acoustic performance and update the thermal performance, a blank sheet approach was needed to ensure the opportunity was maximised. The new layout designed by Allen Construction Consultancy, which incorporated the existing balcony spaces, provides much more appealing and space efficient flats.

Allen Construction continues to work with Ealing Council to improve sheltered housing Allen Construction Consultancy has a long and established relationship with Ealing Council, and was invited to undertake a feasibility study to convert existing hard to let bedsits at two sheltered housing schemes at Creswick Road and St. Andrews Road, Acton, into accessible 1-bed flats.

As all properties needed to be complete in a short period of time to allow displaced residents to return home as soon as possible, we needed an efficient and affordable solution that could be installed in situ with the minimal disruption to residents. Although the buildings already existed, because they were changing use from bedsits to flats, we also had to ensure the conversions met full building regulations. After extensive internet searches, we were very pleased to find Matilda’s Planet, and their product, Matilda’s Blanket. This product offered a fast track, durable, engineered solution that met the brief and minimised waste. By utilising their skills for installation, we were able to create desirable flats with improved layouts, better energy efficiency and improved acoustics.

No plastering required Matilda’s Blanket has a smooth Rigidur finish, which can be painted just as soon as the last panel is in place!

Tough The front face of the Blanket can take a significant amount of day-to-day abuse and punishment. In tests (with a sledge hammer!), Matilda’s Blanket was at least 15x stronger than plasterboard.

Strong Shelves, radiators, boilers…direct fixing to the Blanket is not a problem. Point loading is in excess of 50Kg.

Sound Insulating Matilda’s Blanket has no mechanical connection to the cold wall it’s insulating you from. This fundamental design requirement for heat insulation also leads to significantly improved acoustic isolation.

Slim line Internal wall insulation inevitably takes up space in your home, there’s no getting away from that. The Blanket’s unique composite sandwich of materials can deliver the same level of insulation at 60% of the thickness of traditional IWI methods. In a typical solid wall property, a Blanket thickness of just 81mm can be all that’s required.

Energy and Cost Savings This is the main driver for considering Internal Wall Insulation, it goes with out saying that the Blanket performs very well indeed. A SAP assessment of Matilda’s Blanket typically shows an 11% better outcome than traditional solutions.

Introducing Matilda’s Blanket Matilda’s Blanket is a completely new and fresh approach to the Internal Wall Insulation challenge and we knew from an early stage in the product development process that we were onto something very compelling, a system that would undoubtedly create a stir in the retrofit and energy saving marketplace.

logic only a child has, she replied: “We don’t want the planet to be yukky, do we Daddy? Isn’t that for the grown-ups to fix?” And in that simple moment, Matilda’s Planet and the Blanket were born. Matilda’s Blanket is going from strength to strength as the market becomes more aware of the system and begins to understand the huge benefits for the homeowner and the installer. Offsite manufacture allows us to tailor the build to the property, delivering the

complete system to site on a property by property basis, along with all required components for the installation. If little or no waste, along with a quick install with the resident in situ (typically one room in one day) isn’t a compelling enough argument then consider the above. The non technical bit is just as important – you get a cosy home. Now bring all of the earlier points back into the equation and you have a very compelling argument indeed. To date, Matilda’s Blanket has been made

However, we’re very pleased to announce that from the start of 2015, ‘Matilda’s Warm Homes’ will be offering an installed solution directly to the homeowner. At Matilda’s Planet we are committed to finding new energy saving solutions and challenging traditional methods. In Matilda’s Blanket, we’re confident that we’ve created a very cost effective, efficient and robust system that delivers so much more than just heat insulation.

Award-winning bptw partnership specifies AluK building systems for the redevelopment of Shakespeare House, London AluK window and door systems have been specified for the regeneration of Shakespeare House, Hackney, London, which saw 24 existing flats being converted into 18 high quality apartments. Working with Islington and Shoreditch Housing Association, bptw partnership reconfigured the existing housing block, installing additional windows to increase the amount of natural light and completely insulating the building to improve thermal efficiency. For the refurbishment project the practice installed the 58BW window system as well as the 58BD and GT55 NI door systems on all the existing and proposed new elevations from ground to fifth floor level. Justin Kelly, partner at bptw partnership comments: “AluK window and door systems integrated very well with the design ethos of the project, with the window surrounds achieving the deep reveal effect that was proposed at the planning stage. The thermal performance matches the aspirations of the energy targets for the building – we are achieving the Code for Sustainable Homes targets on the new residential units. The 58BW window system, as well as the GT55 NI, are certified under Secured by Design, a requirement essential to Islington and Shoreditch House Association.

Grade II Listed Peterborough Property Set amid four and half acres of land stands a gorgeous Grade II Listed property in Peterborough.

I

t was built between 1841 and 1847 for W Lawrence Clark of the Peace for the Liberty of Peterborough and was home to the Hartley family from 19011996, where novelist L.P Hartley wrote his novel ‘The Go-Between’. The property hosted many important meetings such as the League of Nations annual meeting in 1937 - better known today as the United Nations. Unfortunately this grand house fell into disrepair and was vandalised while left unoccupied. The Hartley family was approached by a few interested parties to purchase the property. A family succeeded in buying it and took on the onerous task of restoring it for their family home. The traditional brick building is spread over many levels, has high ceilings and a number

of different sized original single glazed windows throughout the house, which rendered it thermally inefficient, cold and draughty. “After repairing the roof and making a number of other essential repairs, we researched the options to address the windows, which were letting a great deal of heat escape through poor seals and the thin glass. As the building is Listed, our options were limited, so a relation recommended we made contact with Selectaglaze who specialise in secondary glazing.” It was not going to be an easy task, due to the number of different sizes and the composition of the original windows; some metal frame, some wooden. A total of 40 windows have been treated using a selection of window styles, in

P C Henderson helps improve the learning environment and playtime at the Lowther Primary School P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide System has been installed in the second phase of refurbishment for Lowther Primary School, London Borough of Richmond, to help transform the facilities and complement the existing building.

P

art of the second phase extension doubled the size of the primary school with a new two-storey building, taking it from single form entry to two-form entry. As part of this phase of the project, P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide hardware was installed helping create a dramatic entrance to the playground. The 900m2 block is comprised of four classrooms, a hall, a kitchen, an ICT suite, staff room and support rooms. Mark Tuffney, Headteacher of Lowther Primary School commented on the extension: “We’re delighted to have such brilliant facilities and increased capacity for the school. The extension creates easier access to the playground and provides more natural light thanks to the large sliding doors. The hardware is easy to operate and also helps keep us feel safe and warm in the winter. When we did the masterplan all those years ago I don’t think we could’ve even dreamt that we would have such wonderful facilities and resources here at Lowther – well we have and it’s marvellous.”

To meet the needs of Richmond Council, Lowther Primary School staff and the school children, Patel Taylor architects designed an open and bright extension connected to the existing first floor building via a glazed link bridge. The success of both phases was helped by the collaborative working between the school, the local authority and the architect. P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide hardware was specified to help realise the vision of the final extension. Lift and Slide allows the use of wooden doors and up to 3m2 and the glazing increases natural light whilst providing excellent weather resistance and security features. E C Harris consulting also worked to realise the master plan for transforming the site into a working community centre comprising of a children’s centre, primary school, nursery and community facilities for adults. P C Henderson’s Lift and Slide makes the doors operate with a simple turn of the handle. This unlocks the door, lifts the door up from its weather tight position and allows it to slide easily on the carriages

with minimal friction. Once open the door can be lowered at any position and locked by moving the handle down. This simple operation is achieved with the confidence that the system offers superior weather resistance and; with the combination of the multi-lock mechanism and concealed position of the carriages, excellent security. The system can hold doors up to 300kg and is available in three CE rated weather levels. The project was registered with the Considerate Constructors Scheme (CCS) which scored the process 36.5 out of 40 for its final audit. The CCS was founded by the construction industry to improve its image and is a non-profit independent organisation which encourages best practice through safety, environmental welfare and community care. The first extension phase has been awarded Building Research Establishment Environmental Assessment Method (BREEAM) Excellent further displaying the environmental considerations of the School and Borough. Phase one also achieved a Civic Trust Award, RIBA Award, and a British Construction Award for ‘Small Building Project.’ London Borough of Richmond commented that the entire design and construction process had been carried out in a rich spirit of collaboration and co-operation between the design team, School, Borough and contractor. This is reflected in the outcome which the Borough and School are delighted with.

RRNews - Issue 14

P C Henderson’s hardware can help utilise space in school and maximise potential. For example rooms such as assembly halls can be divided into extra classrooms with sliding or folding doors. Standard or cupboard doors can eliminate the room needed for a swing door to function by using sliding doors which are also the safer option as they eliminate the intrusive swing door.

The Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors (FTMRC) Standardising Standards The principal objectives of the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors since its inauguration in 2006 have been to improve the workmanship standards of installation and widen the technical design knowledge necessary to protect the integrity of the fully supported traditional metal roofing industry.

T

he revival in the use of aluminium, copper, zinc, stainless steel and galvanised mild steel in the fully supported hard metal roofing sector over the last 20 years has highlighted a shortage of skilled installers and the gap in formalising up-to-date codes of practice suited to modern construction requirements within the United Kingdom. At present, the existing BSI Codes of Practice and technical specifications relate to the 1960’s or 1970’s when the use of these metals previously enjoyed popularity among specifiers and the architectural practices of the day. Manufacturers publish recommendations for their own products, but these individually prepared guidance notes vary in content and detail, due in no small part to the varying countries of origin in which they are produced. The initial task of the FTMRC has been and is therefore twofold:-

r To publish a comprehensive technical ‘Guide to Good Practice’.

Concentrating on the former the FTMRC has completed its comprehensive technical ‘Guide to Good Practice’, which is now in its 2nd edition. This essential guide to working practice and techniques is fast becoming accepted and recognised as the industry’s essential reference document being referred to by installers, architects and designers. It is also used to supplement manufacturers’ own recommendations for their products by providing general design and installation guidelines. The ‘Guide to Good Practice’ is constantly under review and it is anticipated that a 3rd Edition will be published in the near future, it is hoped that this will form the basis for a new BS Code of Practice for fully supported traditional metal roofing. The Guide also forms the basis upon which FTMRC members and applicants are vetted. It

contractors working throughout the UK and Eire. The site will be continuously updated to reflect the ongoing work of the FTMRC providing those working in this industry with detailed information on technical matters.

r The FTMRC has established a centre of training excellence in conjunction with the Lead Sheet Association at East Peckham Kent. The training centre will continue, with the assistance of manufacturers and other organisations such as the CITB, to develop and co-ordinate practical skills towards a formal qualification such as an NVQ. To this effect we have already generated substantial interest from the manufacturing sector, which has pledged practical support in material and personnel. We are also linking with the Lead and Hard Metals Training Group in the co-ordination of courses that will attract funding support. Our own training facility is open to all, providing opportunities for those that aspire to become FTMRC members, to further develop their skills to the required standard in order to apply. The FTMRC is becoming the recognised conduit through which the vagaries in design detail and variety in manufacture of all the different metals can be brought together to provide an agreed general working practice, used to regulate standards to which installers can be trained, in order to make optimum use of the products at their disposal for the ultimate benefit of the client. The FTMRC has recently launched a new website which enables prospective clients and professionals to locate vetted member

Housing campaigners protest outside AJ120

Activists opposing the ‘gentrification’ of a south-east London housing estate staged a protest outside last night’s AJ120 awards at the Tower of London

T

he Fight4Aylesbury group was targeting event attendees HTA Design and Hawkins\ Brown for their involvement in the redevelopment of the 2,700-home Aylesbury Estate in Walworth, which the campaigners claim would priceout existing tenants and lead to ‘social cleansing’. The 20-strong protestors used a loudspeaker to attack the practices for their role in the ‘eviction, demolition and gentifrication’ of the late 1960s estate in Southwark and threw scores of paper airplanes made from flyers outlining their complaints. Shouting down from the path at the partygoers gathered in the moat, the group accused all the practices at the ceremony of breaching paragragh 5 of the ARB’s code of conduct for failing to ‘consider the wider impact of [their] work’. Leaflets produced by the campaigners’ read: ‘Why do architects always wear black? Because they’re the funeral directors of the working class.’

He said he had also felt ‘intimidated by the ferocity of some of the protesters – and actually rather frightened by them when they occupied our office and encircled me’ but was ‘determined to maintain a reasonable position’. He added: ‘[I feel] saddened by the irony that I too am campaigning for more affordable and better homes for London but perplexed that their action is directed at the design team a soft target that is no position to give them what they want.’ Work on the Aylesbury Estate redevelopment’s first phase is due to begin on-site in the autumn.

Sutton War Memorial Respectfully Restored Using Natural Solutions From Brett The expertise of Brett Landscaping in natural stone was instrumental in helping to restore a historical touchstone in time for the World War One centenary commemorations in November 2014. Brett Landscaping worked with property design consultancy NPS Group to recondition a 93 year old war memorial in Sutton-on-Hull village located in the West Riding of Yorkshire, in advance of the local community’s remembrance activities. “While the memorial has been maintained superbly by Sutton-on-Hull’s community, it was in need of improvement in a structural capacity,” explains Howard Thompson, building surveyor at NPS. GGR Group Have Starring Role in Grand Designs Build at Cefn Castell In the winter of 2013 lifting specialists GGR Group, the leading provider of UNIC mini cranes and vacuum lifting equipment for hire and sale in the UK, were called upon to install glazing to the Grand Designs build, Cefn Castell. As well as featuring on Channel 4’s Grand Designs programme, the project recently won an LABC Building Excellence Award.

T

he contractors turned to GGR and their 20 years of expertise to take on the trickiest of glazing tasks. The equipment used at Cefn Castell needed to be compact enough to access the site via a track that passed underneath a 3.6m high railway bridge, and as lightweight as possible to prevent weakening of the cliff top. The URW-706 is one of the most powerful mini cranes on the market,

boasting 6 tonnes of lifting power; with its compact dimensions and weighing in at just 7.9 tonnes this mini crane was the perfect choice for the project. Building in such an exposed location meant that the structure needed to be extremely robust to weather the 100 mph winds; triple glazed, reinforced insulated glass was used to protect against the punishing elements. The mini crane spent two days on site installing the glass to two levels, using a 750kg capacity, dual circuit DSZ2 glass vacuum lifter to lift 3.6 metre tall glazed units weighing up to 500kg each, and a multi-functional Glassmax hoist to install roof lights. “Our equipment has helped glaze and construct some of the most prestigious and challenging projects in the UK, including a number of Grand Designs projects, and iconic residential developments such as the Wentworth Estate, Chelsea Harbour and the Beetham Tower, through to larger, more high-profile projects such as the London Olympics Aquatic centre, The Shard, The Strata ‘Razor’ Tower and, more recently, London’s Crossrail stations” adds Gill. “We are very happy to have been able to help this unique and challenging build to run smoothly. The finished result is truly impressive. Contractors feel reassured that when they use our equipment or our full contract lift service, their project is in the safest hands”.

Wigan and Leigh Hospice RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing

250 square metres of RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing was laid to the entrance and gardens of Wigan and Leigh Hospice using Harvest Crunch aggregate blend.

T

HE PROJECT

The Woodview Centre was added to the Wigan & Leigh Hospice in a £1.5 million building project which included a two storey building to house the Hospice in Your Home service, consulting rooms and therapy clinics, it also involved landscaping a large area of grounds. Ellenby Construction began work at the site in April 2013. The client’s brief was to “build a modern eco-friendly development within a peaceful and therapeutic environment”. It is known that a green and leafy setting can benefit a person’s wellbeing and the landscaping was designed to provide a tranquil and relaxing outdoor environment that could be viewed and visited by patients and their visiting friends and family. Pathways were installed through the existing woodland area and a new pond was installed, providing a natural link between the new Woodview Centre and the original hospice gardens and nature reserve. Paths and the entrance to the new centre were surfaced with RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing, using a Harvest Crunch aggregate blend. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides a slip-resistant surface for patients and carers to be able to enjoy the natural outdoor setting in safety. RonaDeck Resin Bound Surfacing provides a strong, durable and porous pavement, which is particularly suitable for wheelchair ‘traffic’ as wheels will not sink and get caught as they can in loose gravel paths, the porosity of the system allows water to drain to the base and ensures that paths are free from standing water. This permeability makes the surfacing system SuDS compliant, which is in keeping with other sustainable aspects of the building project which include solar panels, under floor heating and the new pond which increases biodiversity in the area and is

refreshed with recycled rainwater collected from the centre’s roof.

Dura Cladding Project Transforms Kerb Appeal and Warmth of 4 Bed House Dura Cladding 150 Weatherboard has helped to transform a 4 bedroom residential property in rural Essex into a stunning and highly marketable home.

T

he initial idea for the project came in 2014 when the property’s owners decided that action was needed to update the exterior façade of their home following a harsh winter. The brief was to reduce the number and variety of materials used on the front and rear elevations and to harmonise the overall look, thus adding much needed kerb appeal. In addition, they were also looking to improve the warmth of their home in winter by uprating the insulation where the previous timber cladding had been faced onto single skin walls. Composite timber cladding is produced by combining natural wood flour and high density polyethylene with specially selected

additives and a suitable binding agent to create a composite material that looks just like natural wood but doesn’t require painting or staining. It is ideal for battling the UK weather and offers a fantastic 25 year life cycle thanks to its durable nature and low maintenance requirements. Having selected Dura Cladding from the market leaders Dura Composites, the property’s owners Mr and Mrs Szajkowski trialled the on-line colour visualiser to perfect the look they wanted. Working with their builder and their Dura Composites representative to draw up a range of design scenarios, the couple decided on a practical

“We were astonished that such a visual transformation could take place so quickly and with such little effort. Dura Cladding 150 Weatherboard in barn black colour was selected to provide a full contrast with the new white render, and to minimise the risk of staining from the sap of nearby trees. The product’s eco-friendly credentials were a further factor in its selection as the cladding is made using up to 87% recycled content and can be supplied as FSC © 100% certified for excellent peace of mind. To achieve the superb result shown above, the original weak and rotten timber cladding and battens were completely removed and new battens were installed. 75mm insulation was added between each batten support, providing a hugely effective heat retention barrier across the front and rear of the property. Dura Cladding was then installed on top of the insulation in accordance with the simple guidelines provided within the accompanying Technical Manual. Various accessory solutions were supplied and used

to great effect as part of the design, such as start/stop trims, window trims, internal/ external trims and expansion trims. To complete the look, the property’s owners decided to use a composite timber decking known as Dura Deck to cover the aesthetically challenging concrete piled skirt that surrounded the building. A complementary barn black deck system was selected and installed to provide a great match for the new cladding solution. The entire project took just 4 weeks to complete, and the stunning results have drawn praise from far and wide. The property’s owner Professor Szajkowski commented; “We were astonished that such a visual transformation could take place so quickly and with such little effort. The house already feels warmer and cosier inside and we are delighted that the composite cladding and decking provide such a hassle free, low maintenance and futureproof solution”. riginally built in the 13th century and protected by conservation area covenants, the hard landscaping of village green at the entrance to St. Edmund’s Church was in need of replacement setts, as the traditional quarried stone surface originally in place had become worn and uneven – causing access issues for wheelchair users, parents and carers with pushchairs, and pedestrians.

“As the church’s turning circle had become hazardous to walk or move over, we knew it was time to address its surface replacement. We needed a solution that looked appropriate, was reasonably priced, and

“Both Brett and our contractors have done a first class job. People using the church have commented on how effective it looks. The team had the project completed in time for our medieval fair, which will enable our Morris Dancers to make best use of the substantially improved and much safer stone circle.” Town Council

Understanding the importance of selecting the best match for the project in situ, Brett Landscaping visited the site to showcase several different block examples for the team to consider. The Council’s Environmental Committee approved the use of 430m2 of Alpha Antique Burnt Oak & Charcoal, supported using a mixed pattern of Charcoal edging. Adding to its service, Brett provided a full design of the area being repaved together with appropriate laying details. Suitable pack quantities were also suggested and purposefully calculated to the nearest pack, to reduce waste and tighten costs. With installation completed and the paving work now in full use, the Town Council comment how pleased they are with the finished result. “Both Brett and our contractors have done a first class job. Leaving the paving in its existing condition was not an option; however, any improvement works undertaken on the village green needed to be in keeping with the surroundings – a requirement which led the Environment Committee for Sedgefield Town Council to research the most appropriate solutions:

The reason Dry-Treat™ products are used in over 40 countries is the unique sealing technology. ry-Treat™ sealers penetrate much deeper, providing a water-repelling barrier. The sealing molecules chemically bond to the pores of materials, creating lasting stain protection for natural stone, brick, masonry and other hard surfaces.

Mearns Castle High School Mearns Castle High School, situated on the outskirts of Glasgow, was founded and built in 1978. The institution seeks to provide a safe, inclusive and high quality learning environment to its 1,352 students and 122 staff, and has been ranked 3rd in the most recent Scottish State School of the Year award.

D

ue to its established reputation, the school has recently extended to create extra classrooms and learning facilities. However, during this recent refurbishment, damp was found in the flooring of the older part of the building, which had affected the existing floorcovering. This is likely to occur in older buildings, where the installation of an effective structural damp proof membrane was not a requirement of the building regulations. Specialist contractors, The Fraser Bruce Group, were appointed to lead the project, and Jamie Bruce, Director of the Fraser Bruce Group, commented, “We have worked with ARDEX regularly over the past couple of years, including projects such as JD sports and the London Underground Network, and once again wanted to utilise, not only their high performance products, but specification knowledge and technical advice.’ ARDEX UK is a system solution provider of high-performance speciality building materials, and the brand choice for

installers and distributors throughout the construction industry. The project was completed over the Easter holiday period, giving ARDEX and the contractor 2 weeks to recommend a solution and carry out the work before the school reopened. The existing floor was uneven and damp so, to save time, ARDEX DPM 1 C Rapid was applied directly to a pre-smoothing layer of ARDITEX NA. ARDITEX NA is a moisture tolerant levelling and smoothing compound, meaning it can be applied below an ARDEX Damp Proof Membrane, and direct to damp concrete. This presmoothing layer maximises both the coverage, and application properties of the DPM, and ensures that the correct film thickness is applied.

“We have worked with ARDEX regularly over the past couple of years, including projects such as JD sports and the London Underground Network, and once again wanted to utilise, not only their high performance products, but specification knowledge and technical advice.’ Jamie Bruce, Director of the Fraser Bruce Group.

A variety of ARDEX products were used on the project which included:

r ARDEX DPM 1 C R: A Rapid Curing One Coat Surface Damp Proof Membrane and Residual Moisture Suppressant. ARDEX DPM 1 C Rapid can be over coated after 4 hours making it ideal for fast track installations. r ARDITEX NA: An Ultra-Rapid Setting Latex Subfloor Levelling and Smoothing Compound. ARDITEX NA reduces the need for intensive preparation and priming, and floorcoverings can be applied after only 4 hours. Jamie explained “The combination of a rapid-drying DPM and levelling and smoothing compound enabled us to the tackle the damp floor confidently, and complete the entire refurbishment within a tight time frame. This was only achievable due to the reliability and performance of ARDEX products.”

LIFE IN THE FAST LANE Spring is here, the days are getting longer, but the hours you put in will remain the same for every vinyl flooring project… until now! The team at F. Ball have always put you, the world’s best flooring contractors, at the top of their list of priorities, continuously striving to develop new products that deliver the best possible results. But F. Ball don’t simply look at flooring products in isolation, they apply ‘joined-up thinking’ to see how best to combine specific products, that when applied in conjunction actually deliver better and faster results. If you’ve a small vinyl flooring job to do, that’s say 40 miles away, you have two options; 1 - Use generic products… where you buy slow-drying surface damp proof membrane, slow-setting underlayment, and everyday vinyl adhesive which takes ages before you can apply the vinyl – then you WAIT. This ‘Slow-Coach’ method could put an extra day on the job, cost you more in travel, not to mention parking charges! Or 2 - the ‘F. Ball Fast-Track Way’… born from F. Ball’s expertise, F. Ball know that the most valuable asset to a professional flooring contractor is TIME. Time is money… wasted time means a reduction in your profits. Contractors need a professional flooring system that gets the job done quickly without compromising on quality. When you combine F. Ball’s Stopgap F78 Damp Proof Surface Membrane with Stopgap Fast-Track 30 and NEW Styccobond F5 when laying vinyl flooring… You’ll Be Amazed! Stopgap Fast-Track 30, F. Ball’s Rapid-Setting, Rapid-Drying, Selflevelling Smoothing Underlayment contains the very latest advances in cement technology and provides a truly Fast-Track Solution and is suitable for use in light to heavy-duty applications for preparing sound absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. Stopgap F78 impedes the passage of residual construction moisture, therefore allowing early installation of floorcoverings in ‘Fast-Track’ building programmes. Stopgap F78 must be applied in two coats and can be used to isolate residual construction moisture where relative humidity values are up to 95% and is pigmented blue to enable visual control coverage uniformity – there’s no mixing required and can be resealed and stored for future use, so eliminating waste too. The very latest addition to the F. Ball Range of ‘Fast-Track Solutions’ is the NEW Styccobond F5 – a Fibre-reinforced, Fast-drying, Solventfree adhesive for installing vinyl floorcoverings in ‘Time Sensitive’ installations. Its Fast-Drying properties allow for very early placement of vinyl floorcoverings – vinyl tiles can be placed immediately, but it is recommended to let the adhesive dry for five minutes to minimise the risk of tiles sliding. New Styccobond F5 is ultimately adaptable and can be applied to structurally sound, smooth, dry, absorbent subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, Stopgap smoothing underlayments, plywood and hardboard. When you choose F. Ball ‘Fast-Track Solutions’, you’ll reduce the need for double visits to site - halve your travel costs and reduce parking charges. You’ll also claim back many hours in time and make more profit.

Maximise Customers’ Comfort Using “Smart Cloud” Anywhere In The World

Pre-payment Solution Meets Metering & Billing Regulations

Panasonic has introduced Smart Cloud, a new cloud-based control solution which allows businesses to manage their heating and cooling systems remotely, via a smartphone or PC. Smart Cloud helps businesses optimise operations and performance across multiple sites. Panasonic’s new “cloud” system is a virtual platform for businesses to use via a user-friendly interface. It provides automated alerts and error messages in real-time, allowing users to monitor and compare the performance of their heating and cooling systems, anticipate maintenance, maximise the life expectancy of units, and optimise their efficiency and cost-effectiveness. Smart Cloud is fully scalable from one to multiple shops, restaurants, hotels or any other group of commercial buildings. It is an innovative control tool for businesses enabling them to monitor their heating and cooling as well as water, electricity and gas meters.

With the recent introduction of the heat network (Metering & Billing) regulations for District and Communal heating systems, building owners, developers and Housing Associations must now ensure meters are installed in each dwelling to accurately measure energy use for residents. Evinox Energy offer a simple solution to meet the regulations with their PaySmart® pre-payment technology, which is inbuilt in every ModuSat® Heat interface unit. Not only is the technology integrated, it can also be activated remotely at any time, providing a flexible billing approach. The Evinox Energy range of ModuSat® heat interface units is the only product available that features integrated prepay ready billing technology. Other pre-payment systems require additional hardware to be installed in the dwelling, which can add cost to the project. Evinox Energy offer various metering & billing solutions for heat networks. Autron Ltd.: Enhanced Safety For LowSurface Temperature Radiators in Schools As Sales and Marketing Manager of Autron Ltd., a specialist manufacturer of low surface temperature (LST) radiators, I’m continually amazed at thediversity of heating specifications found within Britain’s schools.

E

ven more surprising are examples I’ve encountered where LST radiators – surely a fundamental safety requirement in areas inhabited by the most vulnerable – have not even been deemed a necessity. The reason for this is simple: when it comes to the heating systems used in schools there are no regulatory standards covering the whole of Great Britain. There is a further design issue that has me scratching my head. If a Local Education Authority is prepared to authorise the additional finances to fit LST radiators to prevent pupils receiving serious accidental burns, surely any product under consideration should also be designed to prevent tiny fingers or other small objects being poked perilously between the grills. All of the radiators we produce at Autronare are designed with finger-proof grills; a simple enough feature, but one that dramatically reduces the likelihood of a painful classroom injury. The absence here of a specific regulation may mean that some clients are not even aware of

these dangers or potential solutions; others may simply assume– wrongly – that fingerproof grills are already a standard feature of all LST radiators. (One consultant recently remarked to me that finger-proof grills had not been specified simply because the client had not identified any such requirement during the risk assessment.) It’s unsurprising that at a time when the public spending purse is under increasing scrutiny many LEAs will be forced into finance-led decisions. Yet even here we often see short-term thinking employed. Autron only produces fully assembled LST radiators; whilst the unit cost of a flat-packed competitor may be lower, if each one takes 45 minutes to assemble prior to installation, a project specifying 120 radiators would call for an additional 90 man-hours. Besides lengthening what may already be a timesensitive project it may actually prove to be more expensive.

All of the radiators we produce at Autronare are designed with finger-proof grills; a simple enough feature, but one that dramatically reduces the likelihood of a painful classroom injury. TOP

Of course, when advising a client on the most suitable LST radiator for a school building I’m always keen to discuss additional relevant design criteria. A radiator casing that can

The Autron LST radiator

Tony Constable, Sales and Marketing Manager of Autron Ltd

be lifted and folded forward for cleaning without any locks or screw fixingis clearly asking for trouble in a classroom.

BOTTOM

So how do these curious situations come about? Gone are the days when the issue

of school heating was covered by a master design specification produced by the Public Standards Authority; in the absence of any national regulation, such decisions are now increasingly left in the hands of those holding the purse strings. And there is even less certainty when it comes to the new academy schools, where these matters are left to a board of governors; responsibility will be passed in the direction of a design consultant who must first ensure that mandatory standards are being met before considering other “lesser” factors. Like any insurance policy – and I genuinely believe that installing a suitably designed LST radiator is a type of insurance– we weigh upexpense against the likelihood of an event taking place, and then consider the possible consequences. With no national regulation, local authorities may take polar-opposite approaches, some arguing that the increased costs of well-specified LST radiators would be far exceeded by the legal and financial repercussions; others may argue that the likelihood of a serious accident is so small that the additional expenditure cannot be justified. Of course,we can attribute a financial dimension to any aspect of life, but surely the safety of our children within the school environment should always sit above these issues, shouldn’t it?

Autron LST radiators are built with child safety in mind. All of our products have the following standard features: t A sturdy durable casing designed to last for decades in any school environment t Finger- and pencil-proof grills t Tamper-resistant design t Rounded corners for child safety and impact protection t Fully assembled, reducing installation costs t Compliant with a safe surface temperature of 43°C We also producea range of purposedesigned radiators for special needs or EBD schools. UK'S FIRSTTILTABLE, FIRE-RATED, IP65 LED DOWNLIGHTER FOR TINY RECESSES

The new H4 FF luminaire from Collingwood Lighting is the UK's first tiltable and dimmable LED downlighter to be fire-rated, moisture-resistant, and small enough to fit a recess of only 56mm. It has an IP65 rating and is fully Part L compliant for 90 minutes' fire resistance, sound attenuation, and air tightness.

RRNews Issue 14

The H4FF, which tilts up to 20° to either side at the touch of a finger, come in a choice of beam angles (38° or 60°) and colours (neutral white or warm white). Because the luminaire has a low profile, it fits easily into shallow ceiling voids. That makes it particularly suitable for challenging domestic and hospitality environments, including bathrooms and wet rooms.

70

"The H4 FF changes the lighting rules for homes, hotels, and other environments where looks count," says Justin Maeers, Chief Technical Officer at Collingwood. "Because it combines so many features in a single fitting, architects and interior designers can be far more playful with their lighting schemes. They can place low-energy LED light within any room in a building and direct the beam wherever they want. There are cost savings too: by making better use of each light beam, they need fewer fixtures." For further information Tel: 01604 495151 or visit: www.collingwoodlighting.com

CHALLENGE Enable development company to reduce tenants’ living expenses and carbon footprint, whilst future proofing its assets

SOLUTION Install Enphase Microinverters to combat shading issues and gain maximum yield for tenants

RESULT Enphase System allowed for faster installation without compromising safety FIT revenue to be re-invested into further development

Solar PV Chosen as Driving Force of Regeneration Arch, the company responsible for investment, development and economic regeneration in Northumberland, had a priority: to drive growth by cutting not only its own power bills, but also those of the families living in its housing in the Ashington Hirst area.

A

n Investment in Long Term Savings

The Northumberland development company explored various technologies to cut power consumption and lower their own and their tenant’s power bills, and soon opted for solar. By investing in solar, Arch could drive regeneration in the county, as well as lock in long-term savings. Arch turned to Saving Energy Renewables North East, a leading renewable energy installer in the area. They chose to work with the company based on their strong track record in carrying out similar large scale commercial solar projects. As a result of such

About Enphase Energy The Enphase System revolutionizes solar power generation with industryleading technology innovation. Enphase’s proven microinverter technology maximizes production of each module, which works together with advanced communications hardware and an intelligent software platform to deliver a reliable, high-performance solar array.

projects, they have helped bring vulnerable people in the community out of fuel poverty through installing energy efficient measures that have significantly reduced their fuel bills.

S

afely Overcoming Design Challenges

Arch’s housing project brought design challenges that were easily solved with Enphase. Almost all of the houses have roofs with a 70-degree variance from south, and many have extension roof’s as well as the main roof construction. This created a challenge for traditional string solar designs, as it meant installing and linking two separate arrays on a single property. Additionally, shading from surrounding trees made it imperative that available daylight was optimised.

E

nphase, Built to Last

Reliability is always at the forefront of Saving Energy’s standards and the systems it provides. With Enphase’s track record proven by millions of installed units and its quality backed up by a 20-year warranty, both the client and Saving Energy have absolute confidence in the quality and durability of the Enphase System. Enphase’s monitoring platform, Enlighten, will allow the client to display its system’s generation, and serves as a great tool for reporting on its investment. The installation commenced late July 2014 and is due for completion early 2015. FIT revenue from this installation is planned to be re-invested into further development. Saving Energy will be looking at replicating residential installs onto Arch’s commercial buildings and continuing the key objective of exceeding their client’s expectations.

RRNews - Issue 14

Being not only a development company, but also a large private landlord, Arch takes safety of residents very seriously. With the Enphase System there is no high voltage DC cable within the house-making it a perfect solution. In terms of the safety of the Saving Energy workforce, the Enphase System also

allowed installers to work safely, efficiently, and quickly across multiple rooftops.

TRUE TO TRADITION: New handmade clay tile launched Marley Eternit has launched a new range of premium handmade clay plain tiles to help create stand-out roof designs for high quality housing developments and sensitive refurbishments.

T

he Canterbury range provides a genuine handmade appearance that specifiers are looking for in today’s market. The traditional hand making process used to create the range brings random undulations and variations that give each tile a unique appearance and character. The tiles are available in three rich colours with soft edges, fully formed nibs and a sandfaced texture which is synonymous with the handmaking process. The Loxleigh handmade clay plain tile has a subtle variation in colour, ranging from red to grey and black with a sanded finish that gives a premium antique reclaimed appearance. The Burford has a rich red-brown tone in a fully sanded texture, which adds warmth and character to the roof. Finally, the Chailey has a more vibrant orange tone with a sandfaced texture that can be used on the main roof, or as a perfect contrast tile for vertical detailing. In addition, all three colours can be mixed on the roof to create your own unique blend and give a patchwork of colours that is often seen on traditional roofs in Suffolk, Sussex and Kent. Canterbury clay plain tiles are also available with a complementary range of traditional handmade fittings and decorative accessories to achieve the perfect finish. Architects, developers and home owners alike are fast rediscovering the beauty of natural handmade clay tiles which are created by skilled craftsmen in the same time-honoured methods that have been used for hundreds of years. Sarah Jackson, Marketing Product Manager at Marley Eternit, comments: “In recent years, homeowners, builders and architects have rediscovered the potential of natural handmade clay tiles and there has been something of a resurgence in their use. In many cases, planners will only accept genuine handmade tiles for heritage or conservation projects and there is also a

growing demand from premium house builders looking to distinguish their properties with an authentic handmade clay plain roof tile. “We are really excited to be able to introduce the Canterbury handmade range to meet growing demand, bringing back the traditional skills and craftsmanship to our clay facility in Staffordshire. It means we can now combine authentic production methods that are true-to-tradition with modern firing techniques, to create beautiful clay tiles that are highly durable.” All Canterbury handmade clay plain tiles are made from Etruria Marl which is widely accepted as the finest clay for strength and durability. The process starts with the hand maker sprinkling some sand into the bottom of the mould to help give the tiles their individual colour and sanded texture. They then place a pre-cut rectangular shaped ‘clay bat’ into the centre of the mould and the maker ’knocks’ the raw clay by hand, using a wooden mallet, to achieve the desired shape and thickness. The excess clay is wired off and a punch is brought down to create the nail holes and nibs and at the same time, the identification marks and batch numbers are stamped into the back of the tile. Finally, the hand maker releases the tile from the mould and removes any excess clay from the nail holes, before placing the unfired or ‘green’ tiles on a metal drying tray. Once fired, the clay tiles will never fade and it is the firing

Sarah Jackson adds: “The Canterbury tiles give an authentic handmade finish to the roof and each tile is as unique as the hands that made them. The handmade range enables architects to have more choice when it comes to specifying for both heritage projects and those that demand a premium clay aesthetic.” Handmade clay plain tiles have been a popular roofing material in the UK since the 1100s and Marley Eternit’s new range is manufactured at its Keele factory in Staffordshire, which specialises in clay plain tile production. Combining the knowledge and experience gained over hundreds of years, the site is ideally suited to use the skills learnt to produce the new range of premium Canterbury handmade clay tiles.

put forward projects for vetting which will be inspected at roof level by an experienced member of the FTMRC Council. Even if accepted, the policy of members providing projects to be vetted continues on a regular basis and anyone failing to maintain the standards required has their membership withdrawn. The Federation can therefore recommend its members with confidence to any specifier looking for the proper installation of a traditional metal roof and there is an increasing trend of members being asked to go back to site to investigate and put right problems caused by a contractor whose design knowledge, hands on skills and practical experience were simply not good enough.

Told You So - Roofing Specialists Fighting Back The ongoing price war in metal roofing has the marketplace continuing under siege from contractors trying to win projects by heavily undercutting prices to clients that have been persuaded the bottom line is all that matters. Victims in this downward spiral of price versus quality are the traditional roofing contractors that know the cost of doing a job properly and yet are constantly under pressure to take short cuts in order to “win” work. An increasing number of specialists are however now turning away from this “work at any price” nightmare scenario and refusing to compromise their standards.

T

hat these traditional roofing contractors are now finding is that those clients that initially shunned them and went for the cheapest price option are now actively seeking them out to go on site and put right all the problems that have been caused in the interim by their “lowest price” first choice.

The FTMRC takes its responsibilities to the sector much further than just a contractor “club” and has been at the forefront of a

and the Federation has worked closely with its manufacturing associates (which include most of the major European producers) to develop a progressive hard metals training programme, delivered at the LSA National Roof Training facility in Kent.

back this up the Federation has T odesigned and published, with the

support of funding from the CITB a UK Guide to Good Practice in Fully Supported Metal Roofing and Cladding, the first publication of its kind to properly address UK design and installation issues covering aluminium, copper, stainless steel and zinc detailing. On line access to the Guide is now available.

The penny is gradually starting to drop that as far as traditional metal roofing is concerned, cheapest price today could well be causing problems tomorrow and there is no substitute for the long term value for money provided by an experienced expert. The outstanding metal roofing companies whose expertise lies in the design and installation of traditional aluminium, copper, zinc, stainless and zinc roofing and cladding are members of the Federation of Traditional Metal Roofing Contractors (FTMRC), an organisation that very much has quality standards as its watchword.

The irony is FTMRC members have often been involved with tendering for the work in the initial stages and had warned the client / architect that the job simply could not be done correctly at some of the price levels that were being quoted. As a result of these warnings going unheeded the clients face (often considerable) further costs to put right a job that should have been done correctly in the first place. There must be a real temptation to put “I told you so” at the end of the remedial works inspection report.

The FTMRC takes its responsibilities to the sector much further than just a contractor “club” and has been at the forefront of a number of initiatives designed to raise the standards of traditional metal roof design and installation. number of initiatives designed to raise the standards of traditional metal roof design and installation. For a start it requires potential members to

There is a growing recognition: r That getting a traditional metal roof designed, set out and installed by someone with the appropriate expertise and experience provides much better value for money in the long term. r That not all metal roofing contractors are the same r That some simply do not have enough knowledge or skill to do the job properly, regardless of how small or large a project may be. That sometimes lowest price should be taken as a warning, not an opportunity.
