LIFE IN THE FAST LANE Spring is here, the days are getting longer, but the hours you put in will remain the same for every vinyl flooring project… until now! The team at F. Ball have always put you, the world’s best flooring contractors, at the top of their list of priorities, continuously striving to develop new products that deliver the best possible results. But F. Ball don’t simply look at flooring products in isolation, they apply ‘joined-up thinking’ to see how best to combine specific products, that when applied in conjunction actually deliver better and faster results. If you’ve a small vinyl flooring job to do, that’s say 40 miles away, you have two options; 1 - Use generic products… where you buy slow-drying surface damp proof membrane, slow-setting underlayment, and everyday vinyl adhesive which takes ages before you can apply the vinyl – then you WAIT. This ‘Slow-Coach’ method could put an extra day on the job, cost you more in travel, not to mention parking charges! Or 2 - the ‘F. Ball Fast-Track Way’… born from F. Ball’s expertise, F. Ball know that the most valuable asset to a professional flooring contractor is TIME. Time is money… wasted time means a reduction in your profits. Contractors need a professional flooring system that gets the job done quickly without compromising on quality. When you combine F. Ball’s Stopgap F78 Damp Proof Surface Membrane with Stopgap Fast-Track 30 and NEW Styccobond F5 when laying vinyl flooring… You’ll Be Amazed! Stopgap Fast-Track 30, F. Ball’s Rapid-Setting, Rapid-Drying, Selflevelling Smoothing Underlayment contains the very latest advances in cement technology and provides a truly Fast-Track Solution and is suitable for use in light to heavy-duty applications for preparing sound absorbent and non-absorbent subfloors prior to the installation of new floorcoverings. Stopgap F78 impedes the passage of residual construction moisture, therefore allowing early installation of floorcoverings in ‘Fast-Track’ building programmes. Stopgap F78 must be applied in two coats and can be used to isolate residual construction moisture where relative humidity values are up to 95% and is pigmented blue to enable visual control coverage uniformity – there’s no mixing required and can be resealed and stored for future use, so eliminating waste too. The very latest addition to the F. Ball Range of ‘Fast-Track Solutions’ is the NEW Styccobond F5 – a Fibre-reinforced, Fast-drying, Solventfree adhesive for installing vinyl floorcoverings in ‘Time Sensitive’ installations. Its Fast-Drying properties allow for very early placement of vinyl floorcoverings – vinyl tiles can be placed immediately, but it is recommended to let the adhesive dry for five minutes to minimise the risk of tiles sliding. New Styccobond F5 is ultimately adaptable and can be applied to structurally sound, smooth, dry, absorbent subfloors of concrete and sand/cement screed, Stopgap smoothing underlayments, plywood and hardboard. When you choose F. Ball ‘Fast-Track Solutions’, you’ll reduce the need for double visits to site - halve your travel costs and reduce parking charges. You’ll also claim back many hours in time and make more profit.

CHANGING PLACES TO GIVE DIGNITY Would you like to be lying on the floor, in full view of other users, if you needed the toilet when away from home? or some ¼million children and adults, this is often the reality, because venues are not properly accessible or inclusive.
F
A correctly-designed and specified Changing Place toilet overcomes those issues, making a location accessible to anyone who needs a carer when going to the toilet, giving them back their dignity, and improving hygiene. With more space than a conventional wheelchair-accessible WC (12m2), a Changing Places toilet further includes, at least, a peninsular toilet, hoist, adult-sized height adjustable changing bench, washbasin and privacy screen. As a result, the user can toilet, and be clean, in an appropriate, hygienic environment. Yet to date, only 600 exist in the UK. That equates to just 10% of the total number of public toilets, excluding toilets at public venues, tourist attractions etc. Says Changing Places campaigner Samantha Buck, “If you are severely disabled or paralysed, you need carers to lift you out of the wheelchair and place you on a flat surface to have your continence pad

This is what I am forced to do with my 7 seven year old son, I have to lay him on a urine soaked floor inside the disabled loo, with the 2nd carer standing outside with the wheelchair they have to pass to me the changing accessories through the open door for all passers by to view, this is one of the most awful experiences I have to face every time I go into my local town centre. We take it for granted that we would not change a baby on the floor of a public toilet - so why on earth is this acceptable for disabled adult people?” “We go to the toilet 8 times a day on average,” elaborates Kelvin Grimes, Changing

BOVINGDON - PRESERVING THE ARCHITECTURAL HERITAGE OF BRICK By Graham Irving, Managing Director of Bovingdon Bricks For centuries, clay bricks have been the pre-eminent building material across the country. Originally dating back from Romans times, the rectangular bricks we recognise today were introduced mainly by Flemish settlers from the continent in the 1400’s.
or centuries, clay bricks have been the pre-eminent building material across the country. Originally dating back from Romans times, the rectangular bricks we recognise today were introduced mainly by Flemish settlers from the continent in the 1400’s.
F
Traditionally, bricks were made in variable sizes up until 1965 when BS 3921 was established. Most towns had their own brickworks and, as the bricks were made by hand on site from locally dug clay, bricks from one part of the country would often have a completely different colour and texture from those made in another region. The characteristics of regional bricks were essentially determined by chemical differences in the local clay, the type of sand used in the mould and the colour of that sand. They could also be influenced by differences in hand moulding, the fuel used for the firing, and the temperature and position of the bricks in the kiln. All these variable factors created a certain irregularity, which added to their aesthetic charm. Inspiration from the past Most of the fine historical brickwork that underpins our architectural heritage is based on variable handmade techniques passed down through the centuries. The Tudors and the Georgians developed these methods into a highly skilled craft, creating elaborate brickwork with extravagant shapes and
ornamentation - most notably the decorative twisted spiral chimney stacks, many of which still survive on listed buildings from that period. Similarly, the patterned herringbone brickwork from the sixteenth century onwards, which replaced wattle and daub filling, and the majestic diaper patterns of Hampton Court have endured and continue to inspire architects with their unmistakable ornamental qualities. Decorative brick bonds such as the Flemish, Header and English bonds, often found adorning historic town houses and country homes, have also had enormous impact on our built environment, making traditional English brickwork so varied, rich and distinctive. However, despite stringent planning regulations designed to protect our heritage, some regions of outstanding beauty are being gradually eroded. The influence of standardised designs, inappropriate use of materials, such as ugly modern cement mortars, more uniform looking machine made bricks, and the seemingly ubiquitous use of the stretcher bond are just some of the features that can dilute the architectural character of an area. Traditional Skills Part of the problem lies in the decline of traditional regional brickmaking. The drive for

greater economies of scale through increased mechanisation during the nineteenth and twentieth centuries, plus the effects of two world wars and several recessions have meant that many of those small-scale brickworks, which used to serve specific areas of the country, have had to close down leaving fewer traditional craftsmen. However, the production of genuine historically sympathetic looking English bricks requires precisely those traditional, handmade skills. One of the last remaining brickworks, whose processes and the end products have hardly changed over the years is Bovingdon Bricks. What distinguishes Bovingdon is its continued use of old-fashioned natural processes, which require very little artificial intervention. Dug from local clay reserves, the soft pugs of clay are thrown into wooden moulds and then dried for three to six days in gas fired drying sheds before the bricks are stacked by hand at the side of the kiln. The colour of these handmade bricks is determined not by the use of modern pigments but by the intensity of the heat and their position in the traditional open top ‘updraught’ Scotch kilns. This technique is very close to that used in old style ‘clamp’ kilns, which is thought to be one of the oldest means of firing. As the only additive used is sand and anthracite, the natural irregularity of colour is largely determined by fluctuations in the weather, the air supply and temperature variations. This somewhat unpredictable firing method produces highly sought

By using these age-old techniques, the company is able to duplicate the intricate colours, shapes and sizes of bricks that were made hundreds of years ago, which makes them a preferred option for many restoration projects. Preserving the built environment Although modern production methods, with
their efficient production lines and enhanced quality control, are capable through artificial staining and weathering techniques of producing aesthetically pleasing bricks at economical prices, there is now a growing appreciation of the benefits of a more oldstyled form of craftsmanship. In these days of volume manufacturing, it is all the more important that architects and conservationists seek out high quality brickwork with the character and detailing that will help preserve and enhance our architectural heritage for generations to come.

Much of our success is in large attributed to us ‘going the extra mile’ and this is a something that we work hard to achieve and promote at all levels within the business. As we have expanded our teams in recent months, our aim is to instil this idea in our new staff members. We think it’s really important to develop this idea as a cultural notion so that where possible we pre-empt our clients requirements, and essentially “Help our customers achieve success” Our design team have a collective experience that extends back through the long history of Milbank. Our Senior Technical Consultant, Jeremy Milbank has spent his long career nurturing a team that is now a respected sounding board for many external engineers and consultants. It’s a concept that is really gaining momentum because builders are looking to save construction costs and buyers are wanting lower heating costs. WarmFloor delivers both lower costs and higher levels of insulation, so we’re seeing increased uptake and we’re gearing up for expansion in this sector. Furthermore, we anticipate delivery in the coming months of a new adjustable steel mould from the Continent which will expand our capabilities greatly. The new mould will allow us to offer some of
the more complex stair designs (which we currently manufacture using the traditional method of custom timber moulds) in a steel mould. The upshot is that we will be able to respond more quickly to orders and deliver a first class finish. An additional bonus to manufacturing in this way is that we can incorporate customised stair recesses and nosing which is something our clients have been repeatedly asking for.

The key advantages of precast are namely: r Precast components are manufactured off-site in an enclosed, controlled casting environment which means consistent quality and avoids potential delays due to inclement weather conditions. r Precast floors and stairs allow immediate site access and finishing access following installation, providing a solid footing and meaning no delays for follow on trades. r Components can be delivered to site as required in the build process meaning that on site storage is not an issue when space is at a premium. r Quicker than in-situ mould construction and pouring – arguably safer too! Potentially, it can be made in to any shape which offers great design flexibility. r Cost certainty + quality control makes keeping to a strict budget is easier with precast. Repeat casting from moulds means great results every time and cost efficiency through repetition. r Accountability – Design, manufacture and installation (all by Milbank) means responsibility and swift resolution to any issues that may arise. All our products are designed and manufactured to British Standards. r The density of precast makes for excellent sound reduction (especially appreciated in residential buildings). It also makes it highly impact absorbent. r Concrete’s thermal mass offers designers the chance to exploit the natural properties of precast concrete for cooling and heating a structure. r Longevity – precast concrete is tough and durable and has excellent exposure properties. It is wholly resistant to insect pests, vermin attacks, fungus and mildew, chemical attack etc.

The transformation of a coastal artillery fort, into a hospital and now high end luxury residences… New life has been brought to the former Bartlet Hospital, with Gipping Homes transforming it into 34 luxurious residences, while maintaining the beautiful features of this Grade II* Historic Site. he location, overlooking the eastern end of the Felixstowe promenade, has had an interesting history. Still standing on site are the remains of the vast walls of Martello Tower, which made up a small coastal artillery fort.

Bartlet Hospital closed in 2008 and had fallen into a state of disrepair, until Gipping Homes took up the challenge of giving it a new purpose. “One rarely gets the opportunity to work on such a fantastic building as The Bartlet – the original design and build quality is exceptional and we feel both privileged, and a little daunted, to have the opportunity to create a new legacy for generations to come. With the support of award winning local Architect Patrick Allen and his team, we have sought to introduce sensitive new design, modern techniques and high quality

Draughty, single glazed windows were a particular concern and so Selectaglaze was approached for advice. Secondary glazing is a reversible adaptation that is acceptable to conservation officers and hence ideal for Listed buildings. Selectaglaze developed designs that are sympathetic to the various window styles whilst reducing heat loss, eradicating the discomfort from draughts and reducing energy bills. Peter goes on to say “I first heard about

SIMONSWERK are Europe´s leading Hinge Manufacturer with a history spanning more than 125 years in the manufacture of high quality brass, aluminium, steel and stainless steel hinges for doors and windows. The project design, named “WikiHouse 4.0”, can be downloaded, adapted, ‘printed’ using a CNC cutting machine and then assembled in a few days with no construction skills and for under £50k. Leading Architectural Ironmongery manufacturer SIMONSWERK were approached to collaborate on the building and supplied the entire door and window hinge systems from their innovative, invisible TECTUS fully concealed hinge system. Alastair Parvin from OO Architects comments:-
Wiki house Photo: Margaux Carron, www.margauxcarron.com
“TECTUS is actually more comparable to a piece of system engineering than door ironmongery. On the face of it, it just looks like a very beautiful hinge - which it is. But its real usefulness is in its adjustability. The fact that you can adjust the door position in location using a hex key saves a huge amount of work during the installation process, and allows a level of precision you’d associate more with industrial design than construction.” The tried and tested, completely hidden TECTUS hinge range provides unsurpassed high quality solutions for interior space doors and functional heavy duty doors with high load values up to 300 kg, offset models for invisible frames or versions with intumescent kits. The range also includes the TECTUS Energy model, with integrated power transmission for the secure use of electronic applications. This outstanding, acclaimed hinge system has 3D adjusting technology, an opening angle of 180 degrees and a maintenance free slide bearing mechanism. All models have a uniform appearance with a closed hinge body and are available in different materials as well as in attractive surface finishes.

The museum has over 100,000 visitors pass through the doors each year which over time had worn out the existing hinges on the door. The TRITECH Solid Brass Hinge was specified as the ideal solution due to its unique concealed bearing and suitability for heavy traffic doors. Opened in 1990 the museum gives visitors the chance to sit in Sherlock Holmes’s fireside armchair and enter his bedroom adjoining the study with Doctor Watson’s room on the second floor. According to the stories written by Sir Arthur Conan Doyle, Sherlock Holmes and Doctor Watson lived in the Victorian lodging house at the world’s most famous address, 221b Baker Street, from 1881-1904. The house is open as a museum dedicated to the life and times of Sherlock Holmes, and the interior has been faithfully maintained for posterity exactly as described in the published stories.
The attractive TRITECH solid brass hinges incorporate a 25 year performance guarantee, high performance maintenance free concealed bearings and a weight carrying capacity of 160Kg – Grade 14. All TRITECH hinges are available with CE marked and 60 or 30 minute fire rated options. Rising damp is the common term for the slow upward transmission of moisture molecules in the lower parts of property walls and other ground-supported structures. It is an important cause of wetness in buildings and forms one of the four elements of dampness along with condensation, penetrating and lateral damp. Electro osmosis is one of a group of effects known collectively as electrokinetic phenomena. These are associated with the electrical charge frequently present on the surfaces of two phases in contact with each other. The application of a voltage (or electromotive Force) to such interfaces causes movement of the phases in relation to each other. The movement of the two phases in relation to each other produces the converse effect, i.e. the formation of a voltage. The four electrokinetic effects can be simply stated as follows and motion caused by applied voltage.
There has been further criticism from heritage supporters suggesting that the cement and gypsum based plastering technically endorsed by the industry traps moisture, and prevent substrates from breathing naturally, itself creating further dampness issues. The Damp Proofing Association (DPA) was requested by Damp Protection Ltd to test the effectiveness of their product PROsystem in controlling vertical transmission of moisture commonly referred to as rising damp. This

1. Electro Osmosis - Liquid caused to move through a porous, static medium. 2. Electrophoresis - Solid particles caused to move through a stationary liquid. 3. Streaming - Voltage produced by liquid Potential being forced through a porous, static medium. 4. Sedimentation - Voltage produced by the Potential freefall of particles through a liquid. Of these 1 is the most important in the context of damp proofing, with the liquid being the aqueous solution responsible for the dampness and the porous static medium being the wall. It is worth noting, however, that 2 electrophoresis, may contribute to damp proofing by moving particulate matter in the pores towards the anode, producing blocking and a effecting capillary rise of water.

Compact Keypads for SPC intruder detection system
RRNews Issue 13
Siemens has introduced two new compact keypads for the SPC intruder detection system. They use touchkeys instead of traditional mechanical keys and the key interface illuminates only when touched. With a depth of just 17.5mm, these keypads sit unobtrusively on any wall. Model SPCK520 offers display and speech output and model SPCK521 adds an ID card reader. The new keypads support EM and MIFARE card technologies. Advanced user authentication eliminates the inconvenience of repeated PIN code entry on systems that are armed and disarmed many times daily. Users can download prerecorded or customized audio files to the keypads. These audible messages assist users when various system events occur. The large graphical display provides a wealth of information at a glance. For instance, users can access detailed information about doors that are open or ajar and therefore preventing the system from being armed. The keypads supply system information and offer various ways to configure the parameters of the SPC system on-site – without additional tools such as a PC. An optional plug-in RF module allows the keypads to be used as RF receivers for communication with wireless detectors nearby. BRETT PIATTO BRINGS ‘ROCK HARD’ PAVING TO DEACONESS HOUSE Aesthetics, product quality and specifier support are amongst the reasons behind the selection of Brett Landscaping to supply its premium Piatto block paving for a prestigious student accommodation development at the University of Edinburgh. eaconess House is a former hospital dating back to 1894 and the new development retains the frontage of the original building, combined with new modern construction to the rear.
D
Mace Real Estate acquired the site following the relocation of hospital services by NHS Lothian to a new administrative centre. During the planning process, the University of Edinburgh expressed an interest in using Deaconess House for student accommodation and a deal was agreed. Given the building’s proximity to Holyrood Park, the planning conditions specified the use of indigenous stone for all paving on the project – initially, the stipulation was as strict as to state that the material must originate from within 20 miles of the site. However, on researching the available options, Mace recognised not only that this was impractical, but that the Piatto range from Brett Landscaping would provide an equally effective and versatile solution to the project’s needs.
“While the plans required a minimalist, aesthetically pleasing paving solution, we were also mindful of the need to install something hard-wearing,” explains Martin Scott, Associate Director at Mace. “Piatto is primarily concrete but features a natural granite aggregate face finish, providing the ideal combination of robustness, durability and good looks.” The natural aggregate facemix of Piatto ensures colour stability over the life of the product, making it ideal for specification – especially with 12 colours available in textured and ground finishes for maximum design flexibility. For Deaconess House, Piatto has been supplied in Silver Granite and Dark Basalt to provide an attractive colour contrast to the scheme. This colour contrast was used to create an intricate design of the building exterior, which provided another challenge incorporating two widths (3.6m and 1.8m) in contrasting colours to demark walkways. Brett Landscaping needed to minimise onsite cutting while ensuring consistent gaps
between blocks, something it achieved by proposing modern laying patterns that were practical to install and that also accentuated the aesthetic qualities of the Piatto blocks to complement the Deaconess site. Graham Construction, main contractor of the Deaconess House development, then incorporated the paving into all areas with the exception of the main access road. Brett Landscaping provided the paving pre-cut so as to reduce on-site risk. “Brett Landscaping has been extremely helpful throughout the project, and both Mace and the University of Edinburgh are delighted with the choice of Piatto to complement the high-quality look of the Deaconess House accommodation,” confirms Martin Scott.
Aesthetics, product quality and specifier support are amongst the reasons behind the selection of Brett Landscaping to supply its premium Piatto block paving for a prestigious student accommodation development at the University of Edinburgh.
Fibrelite Working with Composites: A Material of the Future Say Goodbye to Heavy Metal and Concrete! Industries are choosing composites and moving away from traditional materials as they react to changing regulations, whole life costs and stricter health and safety policies. ibrelite has seen a tremendous increase in enquiries for their lightweight composite access covers from industries keen to move away from the traditionally used metal and concrete and change their specifications to composites.
F
“We have experienced a huge increase in new enquiries especially over the last 12 months from all major industries including rail, ports and airports, water, gas and electricity companies, power stations, retail and commercial developments, telecoms, sports arenas and stadiums - in fact the applications are endless.” reports Ian Thompson, Managing Director. “And with RIDDOR (Reporting or Injuries, Diseases and Dangerous Occurrences Regulations) statistics attributing over half of injuries that result in an
absence from work to manual handling it’s clear that reducing hazards in this area is a priority. Our design incorporates up to two lifting points in the cover for specially designed lifting handles which allow operatives to remove the covers without using their fingers or bending over. “Another major problem facing our clients across the globe is aging infrastructure. Bridges, highways, rail network, water lines and sewer systems are all deteriorating at a rapid pace with corrosion a principal
factor. GRP products are corrosion-resistant and so ideal for retrofit applications that arrest the problem. “We can also provide bespoke and custom trench covering solutions to match customer specifications so the trench cover dimensions, internal stiffeners and fibre architecture can be altered to optimise the performance of each panel based on individual projectspecific design criteria. “And, in response to customer demand, we can mould our composite covers in nearly any colour or combination of colours to blend in with the colourscheme of a facility or to colour-code service entry points. In fact we can even include any style logo or marking in the upper surface of the cover in single or multiple colours. “
“And, in response to customer demand, we can mould our composite covers in nearly any colour or combination of colours to blend in with the colour-scheme of a facility or to colour-code service entry points.

Cool Systems Holdings installs Mitsubishi Electric Air Conditioning A new central London meeting and conference venue that opened its doors in January is using state-of-the-art heat recovery air conditioning and ventilation to deliver absolute comfort for guests. arfield House on the bustling Edgware Road has seen its three floors undergo a total transformation into contemporary meeting and conference rooms for businesses to hire. There are 22 separate meeting spaces of varying sizes spread across the three levels plus breakout and coffee areas.

They have all been given a thoroughly modern overhaul and, in keeping with the theme, the air conditioning services are all on show, with ductwork runs and vents all part of the look and feel of the latest offering from venue hire company, etc Venues. Specialist installer and Mitsubishi Electric Business Solutions Partner, Cool Systems Holdings was called upon to deliver on the contemporary brief that required the creation of not only a comfortable environment for users but a system that was also a part of the ambience of the venue, which can host anything from large-scale events to training days and seminars.
mechanical ventilation with heat recovery (MVHR) units to each floor as well as a City Multi R2 heat recovery air conditioning system. The building’s server rooms, pantry and kitchen spaces were serviced with smaller split air conditioning units. Developed and refined over the past 30 years, the Lossnay system has perfected the recovery of waste energy whilst delivering fresh air ventilation within any building. Especially important in schools and offices, Lossnay can work in conjunction with Mitsubishi Electric air conditioning to maintain a comfortable and fresh environment. The units reduce overall energy costs by extracting stale air and then recovering the heating or cooling energy to
“We are a Business Solutions Partner of Mitsubishi Electric, and have installed their equipment in several jobs previous to this. delivered by two R410A City Multi units. Many buildings require cooling in some areas and heating in others even in adjacent rooms. The outstanding City Multi R2 system meets this requirement by distributing surplus heat from cooling operations (and vice versa) to rooms where it is needed. This efficiency can result in energy savings of up to 30 per cent over conventional systems. The system installed at Garfield House all feeds into Mitsubishi Electric’s advanced AG150 centralised controller, which can also interlock with the Lossnay ventilation system. The AG150 is a very cost effective 9 inch touch screen centralised controller. The panel can control up to 50 devices, with the functionality to monitor energy use, set daily timers and instigate night setback. In addition, set point upper and lower limits can be established and refrigerant volumes can be checked via the interface.
CS Group Technical Design Engineer Martin Lazovy explains: “There was nothing on the third floor when we started and only a couple of split systems on the first and second. We stripped everything out and started from an empty building.
Remote control is also provided by standard PAR31 MAA panels throughout the building’s various rooms. The clear backlit display and simple functions of daily and weekly timer control make for a very simple user interface. Remote PAC-SE41TS sensors have also been installed in areas with no remote controller.
“The brief was to ensure all services were exposed in line with the contemporary design the client was going for, which meant using exposed ducted fan coil units on the ceilings on each of the floors.” CS supplied Mitsubishi Electric Lossnay either warm or cool incoming fresh air. By utilising this energy, the Lossnay system can save up to 30 per cent on initial capital costs of heating and cooling plant. A total of 21 Lossnay units varying from the LGH-50RX5-E to the larger LGH-100RX5-E have been deployed at Garfield House. This commercially orientated system can be utilised virtually anywhere to extract stale air and then recover the heating or cooling energy to either warm or cool incoming fresh air. The heat recovery air conditioning is
The entire installation is also primed to be linked up to Mitsubishi Electric’s forthcoming Remote Management Interface (RMI) that will enable monitoring and control from iPhone and other smart devices. “The client is extremely happy with the end result,” says Martin. “The system works well and fits in with the design values of the building. “We are a Business Solutions Partner of Mitsubishi Electric, and have installed their equipment in several jobs previous to this. Thermal Wheel Heat Recovery A thermal wheel is an energy recovery heat exchanger positioned within the supply and exhaust air streams of an air-handling system or in the exhaust gases of an industrial process, in order to recover the heat energy.
Description thermal wheel consists of a circular honeycomb matrix of heatabsorbing material, which is slowly rotated within the supply and exhaust air streams of an air-handling system. As the thermal wheel rotates, heat is picked up from the exhaust air stream in one half of the rotation and given up to the fresh air stream in the other half of the rotation.
A
The heat exchange matrix is normally manufactured in aluminium, which has good heat transfer properties. The heat exchanger is rotated by a small electric motor and belt drive system. The motors are often inverter speed-controlled for improved control of the leaving air temperature. If no heat exchange is required, then the motor can be stopped altogether.
Because of the nature of thermal wheels in the way that heat is transferred from the exhaust air stream to the supply air stream without having to pass directly through an exchange medium, the gross efficiencies are usually much higher than that of any other air-side heat recovery system. The shallower depth of the heat exchange matrix, as compared to that, say, for a plate heat exchanger, means that the pressure drop through the device is normally lower in comparison. Although there is a small extra energy requirement to rotate the wheel, the motor energy consumption is usually very low and has little effect upon the seasonal efficiency of the device. In addition, the ability to recover “latent heat, depending upon the materials and coatings used, can improve gross efficiencies by 10–15%.
Disadvantages he Thermal wheels can become blocked and inefficient due to a lack of cleaning and maintenance and so do not do the job that they are designed to do. Many companies do not have the capability to clean these units. Blygold has been focusing on cleaning and replacing
T
rotary heat exchangers for many years now. The majority of service contracts hardly ever include inspection or overhaul of thermal wheels. Blygold can either remove , deep clean and replace the wheels or actually deep clean the wheels in situ on site.
Deep cleaning lygold uses a specific technique, in which a combination of water and compressed air pushes contamination out of the rotary heat
B
exchanger. Blygold install a device which is connected to the rotary heat exchanger with a magnet. A step motor with a gear transmission is attached to the conductor. Several sensors are attached, which detect the distance and count the number of revolutions. Then water and air are sprayed inside ( or only air, depending on the type of heat exchanger). Compared to the cleaning method that removes only the contamination on the surface, this fully automated deep cleansing technique is completely unique.

Easy Stair - Temporary Staircase EASY - SAFE
Easy Stair is a temporary staircase which provides access to upper Àoors prior to the installation of permanent stairs. Easy Stair is particularly useful when a project involves the installation of quality, expensive stairs as installing a temporary staircase can prevent damage to the ¿nished staircase. Preventing damage to the ¿nished stairs can potentially save a great deal of money, delays and problems! Where a bespoke staircase is being installed Easy Stair also allows greater time to ¿nalise the design and manufacture without delaying the program. Easy Stair allows easy access for clients to gain access to upper Àoors during site meetings and view site progress. A temporary staircase will also speed up the building process as site operatives can use a speedy, safe method of access (rather than ladders) - again saving money and potentially reducing the program time. Easy Stair is delivered to site fully assembled, it is simply lifted into position secured by two screws and the handrails inserted into either side. The stair unit weighs only 25kg and is available throughout the UK on a next day delivery service. When used with suitable stairwell edge protection, stairwells can be safer, easier and improve productivity from the very start of the construction process. The stairs are 600mm wide and suit Àoor to Àoor heights ranging from 2.65m to 3.05m.

The new H4 FF luminaire from Collingwood Lighting is the UK's first tiltable and dimmable LED downlighter to be fire-rated, moisture-resistant, and small enough to fit a recess of only 56mm. It has an IP65 rating and is fully Part L compliant for 90 minutes' fire resistance, sound attenuation, and air tightness. The H4FF, which tilts up to 20° to either side at the touch of a finger, come in a choice of beam angles (38° or 60°) and colours (neutral white or warm white). Because the luminaire has a low profile, it fits easily into shallow ceiling voids. That makes it particularly suitable for challenging domestic and hospitality environments, including bathrooms and wet rooms. "The H4 FF changes the lighting rules for homes, hotels, and other environments where looks count," says Justin Maeers, Chief Technical Officer at Collingwood. "Because it combines so many features in a single fitting, architects and interior designers can be far more playful with their lighting schemes. They can place low-energy LED light within any room in a building and direct the beam wherever they want. There are cost savings too: by making better use of each light beam, they need fewer fixtures." For further information Tel: 01604 495151 or visit: www.collingwoodlighting.com
CHALLENGE Enable development company to reduce tenants’ living expenses and carbon footprint, whilst future proofing its assets SOLUTION Install Enphase Microinverters to combat shading issues and gain maximum yield for tenants RESULT Enphase System allowed for faster installation without compromising safety FIT revenue to be re-invested into further development
Solar PV Chosen as Driving Force of Regeneration Arch, the company responsible for investment, development and economic regeneration in Northumberland, had a priority: to drive growth by cutting not only its own power bills, but also those of the families living in its housing in the Ashington Hirst area.
A
n Investment in Long Term Savings
The Northumberland development company explored various technologies to cut power consumption and lower their own and their tenant’s power bills, and soon opted for solar. By investing in solar, Arch could drive regeneration in the county, as well as lock in long-term savings. Arch turned to Saving Energy Renewables North East, a leading renewable energy installer in the area. They chose to work with the company based on their strong track record in carrying out similar large scale
About Enphase Energy The Enphase System revolutionizes solar power generation with industryleading technology innovation. Enphase’s proven microinverter technology maximizes production of each module, which works together with advanced communications hardware and an intelligent software platform to deliver a reliable, highperformance solar array.

commercial solar projects. As a result of such projects, they have helped bring vulnerable people in the community out of fuel poverty through installing energy efficient measures that have significantly reduced their fuel bills.
S
afely Overcoming Design Challenges
Arch’s housing project brought design challenges that were easily solved with Enphase. Almost all of the houses have roofs with a 70-degree variance from south, and many have extension roof’s as well as the main roof construction. This created a challenge for traditional string solar designs, as it meant installing and linking two separate arrays on a single property. Additionally, shading from surrounding trees made it imperative that available daylight was optimised.
E
nphase, Built to Last
Reliability is always at the forefront of Saving Energy’s standards and the systems it provides. With Enphase’s track record proven by millions of installed units and its quality backed up by a 20-year warranty, both the client and Saving Energy have absolute confidence in the quality and durability of the Enphase System. Enphase’s monitoring platform, Enlighten, will allow the client to display its system’s generation, and serves as a great tool for reporting on its investment. The installation commenced late July 2014 and is due for completion early 2015. FIT revenue from this installation is planned to be re-invested into further development. Saving Energy will be looking at replicating residential installs onto Arch’s commercial buildings and continuing the key objective of exceeding their client’s expectations.

Being not only a development company, but also a large private landlord, Arch takes safety of residents very seriously. With the Enphase System there is no high voltage DC cable within the house-making it a perfect solution. In terms of the safety of the Saving
Energy workforce, the Enphase System also allowed installers to work safely, efficiently, and quickly across multiple rooftops.

Apollo Lighting were called in to work with a local Architect to refurbish both the communal meeting area and main reception. The aim of the project was to ensure it created a long-lasting impression on the minds of everyone from the minute they walk through the glass doors. Thought and care for the residents and their needs was number one priority whist designing the lighting layout of the room. Adding a decorative touch with stylish glass up-lighters built into the balustrade created a comfortable and warm area that residents could feel happy inviting family and friends to visit. The main reception desk and coffee shop have both been re-positioned, to make better use of the available space and create an appealing area with the use of quality modern downlights with
decorative glass attachment. The original brief was to design a scheme using fluorescent but following a site survey, Apollo recommended that they go for an LED option which would save them 70% in energy saving and significant maintenance costs. The LED
option was adopted and installed to the delight of the operations team at the care home.

In 2012 the FTMRC launched the 2nd edition of the UK Guide to Good Practice in Fully Supported Metal Roofing and Cladding. Building on the ground breaking foundations laid by the first edition in 2007, the new, much extended Guide to Good Practice provides a comprehensive reference document for the design, specification and installation of traditional metal roofing and cladding. Containing more than 100 drawings, photos and tables supporting extensive instruction and reference notes within its 96 pages, the Guide provides information on the detailing issues most commonly faced by those involved in the sector, including jointing, fixing, underlays, eaves, abutments, verge, ridges & hips, weatherings and drainage, roof penetrations and much more. The Guide has been compiled for the FTMRC by a working group of the leading installation contractors together with input from all of the prominent
metal manufacturers from mainland Europe. It provides easy comparisons of the different roofing metals and highlights the similarities in – and differences between – working with aluminium, copper, galvanised and stainless steel and zinc. It is designed to supplement – not replace – the guidelines and specifications each manufacturer issues for their own product, but for the first time collect and collate this separately produced information into a single publication. The UK Guide to Good Practice aides all those involved in the sector. It provides an essential training companion for those learning the craft of hard metal roofing and cladding, a guide to detailing for architect and designers as they draw up their specifications and an easy on-site reference for installers needing to check information on sizing, fixing and detailing. The long overdue need for such a reference document was initially highlighted by the FTMRC and recognised by Construction Skills who responded by providing a sizeable funding grant that enabled the publication to be produced more quickly and in a better quality format that would otherwise have been possible.
Copies of the UK Guide to Good Practice can be obtained direct from the FTMRC office and www.guidetometalroofing.com. Profits generated from the sale of the Guide are ploughed straight back in to the further development of training and qualifications in traditional hard metals roofing and cladding. The FTMRC Guide to Good Practice provides a convenient and authoritative technical reference that will assist everyone in maintaining quality standards in traditional metal roofing design and installation.

Celuform offers greater colour choice with textured cladding range
Traditional and Developer roof tiles have been highly popular in the UK for years.
SIKA SARNAFIL Specified for UK Border Agency
Leading PVC-UE roofline brand Celuform has introduced five colours to its popular Celutex textured cladding range.
Our tiles are appreciated for classic elegance and the unique beauty of hand-made products created with the greatest attention to detail. Each of our products is hand-made, in compliance with traditional and trustworthy technology. In the production process we use only natural, environment-friendly, high-quality materials, which we derive from our own reserves. The kiln is coal-fired, which gives the products their unique character. Our tiles emphasise an individual style of the building, lending it a unique character and atmosphere. Besides classic technology, quality control plays a key role in the production process. Each tile that finds its way to our client has to meet high quality requirements. Quality control is present at every stage of production.
The UK Border Agency in Cardiff now boasts a total of 750sq m of Sika Sarnafil single ply roofing after a skilful refurbishment by Reading-based Owlsworth Roofing. In 2013 The UK Border Agency facilities management team contacted construction company Interserve with severe concerns about the flat roof on their building. Substantial areas of standing water had formed on the existing coverings and the large quantity of roof-mounted air conditioning plant would likely hamper the effectiveness of any repairs. In November 2013 Interserve tasked Owlsworth Roofing with advising on the most suitable long-term waterproofing solution for the roof. Owlsworth chose to install Sika Sarnafil roof coverings. Sarnafil G410-15ELF was selected thanks to its outstanding resistance to weathering and ease of installation. For further information visit: www.sarnafil.co.uk
Celutex products, which are available in both a shiplap and featheredge boards, are designed to give an authentic look of timber while being virtually maintenance free. Available in cream, white, light grey, sand and light blue, the textured cladding product is suitable for all buildings, and has a particular appeal to specifiers who want a traditional look without the upkeep of wood. Celuform sales and marketing director Simon Reynolds said: “The Celutex textured cladding range is proving to be extremely popular with specifiers. It has a textured appearance, similar to wood, and comes in a range of colours to give the appearance of painted timber, without the upkeep.

KEMPER SYSTEM ENABLES BARNSLEY TOWN HALL TO KEEP HERITAGE INTACT With its Portland Stone façade and its classical architecture, Barnsley Town Hall is one of South Yorkshire’s most distinctive landmarks and best loved buildings. hen Barnsley Council commissioned a project to refurbish the roof as part of a programme of improvements to the building, Kemper System not only had to ensure that the roof was upgraded successfully without any disruption to council services but also had to complete the scheme without any impact on the rest of the building.
W
Explains Victoria Ramwell, technical sales representative of Kemper System: “The project involved installation of a new warm roof system to enhance the thermal performance of the building as well as providing a new waterproofing surface. “The town hall remained occupied throughout the programme and the building not only involved challenges in terms of the roof build up and complexity but also has delicate features that we had to protect during the works, affecting the way in which the programme was designed.” To address these challenges, the Stratex warm roof system with Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid waterproofing membrane was specified by Kemper System. Kemperol
2K-PUR is solvent-free and odourless; ideal for use on occupied buildings where the odours from solvent based or so called lowodour products can be disruptive. Kemperol is also cold applied and therefore can be installed without hot works or the fire risk associated with them. The existing roof build up consisted of asphalt, followed by a screed and a further layer of asphalt. Barnsley Council were keen to reduce the weight on the roof and so the top two layers had to be removed before installing the new roof. The remaining asphalt surface varied in condition and a new vapour control layer had to be installed over large areas of the roof surface before installation of Kemper System’s Kempertherm insulation board. A tapered insulation scheme was chosen to aid

with rainwater drainage. Stuart Hicks, marketing manager from Kemper System explains: “The Stratex system is designed to enable the installer to choose between mechanical or adhesive fixings for the insulation and initially the contractor planned to use mechanical fixings. “However, it was clear when the installation team started to drill pilot holes that the vibration could cause damage to the internal décor and potentially the ornamental glass dome inside the building. As a result, adhesive was used to fix the insulation.” As the level of the new insulation was above the lower edge of the glass on the large lantern rooflight, and so as not to interfere with the structure, a drainage channel was created around the roof light and lined with the Kemperol 2K-PUR membrane. Stuart continues: “The complexity of the roof meant that it would have been extremely difficult to install a new waterproof surface with anything other than a liquid membrane.
cures to form a tough, flexible substrate that cannot delaminate. After completing the entire roof, red aggregate surfacing was applied to designated areas to create nonslip maintenance walkways. “We needed a roof refurbishment that would improve the town hall’s thermal performance and protect against water ingress” comments Tony Taylor from Barnsley Council. “The solution from Kemper System not only answered these requirements but, being sustainably sourced and solvent-free, also conformed to our environmental objectives and ensured that we could carry on using the building as normal without any unpleasant odours or disruption.”
The Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid system enabled the contractor to install the waterproofing to the exact contours of these roof details and seamlessly incorporated all adjoining areas and drainage channels into a single monolithic membrane.
“In addition to the roof light, above the internal glass ceiling dome, and the channel we had created around it, we had to contend with a high parapet wall and the outlets that come out of it, numerous skylights, a central plinth and two plant rooms on the roof.” The Kemperol 2K-PUR liquid system enabled the contractor to install the waterproofing to the exact contours of these roof details and seamlessly incorporated all adjoining areas and drainage channels into a single monolithic membrane. Applied wet-on-wet in a single process, the liquid resin saturates a reinforcement fleece and
