Clevedon Hall Set in remarkable grounds, just a short distance from the seafront, Clevedon Hall is currently undergoing a £3 million refurbishment to be turned into one of the UK’s leading exclusive event and wedding venues.
C
levedon Hall, a 150-year-old stunning Victorian building, has an extensive history and has been used for numerous purposes throughout the years. History of Clevedon Hall

RRNews - Issue 10
Clevedon Hall was originally designed by Foster and Wood, a firm of Bristol Architects who designed other Bristol landmarks including the Grammar School Hall. Constructed in Mendip and other local stones, Clevedon has impressive carvings and pierced-

stone balustrading. Formally named Frankfurt Hall, the mansion was built for Conrad Finzel who owned the UK’s largest sugar-refining business in the Counterslip Factory, Bristol. Conrad only enjoyed his estate for six years before his death in 1859; the hall was then passed to his son who was forced to sell the estate due to financial issues. Charles Hill, who owned the Albion Shipyard in Bristol, bought the Hall in 1877 as a family home, and promptly changed its name to Clevedon Hall. It was then sold several times and used for many different purposes including a call centre and a girl’s boarding school. Current owners, Peter and Sally McCarthy bought

The McCarthy’s then sold the business but stayed on as landlords. When the company who bought the business went bust, they then decided to renovate. Over the years, they continued to receive letters from people asking if they could use the hall to get married. As enquiries grew, they researched
possibilities around turning the hall into an exclusive events venue and it proved that there was a real desire for it. Refurbishments In 2010, Clevedon Hall was opened for its first public event and over the last three years extensive work has been carried out. Many of the original features still remain including the 19th century Dutch tower, the Victorian fireplaces and the carved panelled oak grand staircase. In the Grand Library there is also a hidden entrance to an underground vault. Clevedon Hall has carried out extensive renovations in order to turn the stunning mansion into a functional hospitality venue and
return the building to its former glory. As part of their offering, they offer private events with personalised catering, drink and dĂŠcor.
As an event venue catering was a high priority for the venue so in order to offer the best possible catering experience, a state of the art electronic kitchen was added.
Clevedon also wanted to keep as many original features as possible to ensure the history of the building remained, with that in mind they restored all of the windows and wood. Restoration and redecoration were carried out in the Grand Library and adjoining orangery, as well as the Dame Rosa Burden room. These rooms are incredibly popular with events and can be decorated and used as requested. The biggest refurbishment of them all is the transformation of building 25 guest bedrooms
within the hall. When first offering Clevedon Hall as an events venue, the owners found that guests were requesting to stay and suggested to them to build rooms. Taking over the remaining floors, the bedrooms will contain state of the art en suites with high tech toilets. They will be styled with a modern yet Victorian interior, which will match Clevedon’s character. There will also be a beautiful wedding bridal suite. Following the completion of this project, Clevedon Hall will be looking to take make full use of these great facilities to help grow their wedding bookings.

In order to get the mansion up to scratch, they started by stripping all of the office furniture and carpets from the bottom floor. The whole of the ground floor was re-carpeted and either painted or wall papered. Each room was revamped with more appropriate fittings for a hospitality venue such as chandeliers and stunning up-to-date furniture.
Following the completion of this project, Clevedon Hall will be looking to take make full use of these great facilities to help grow their wedding bookings.

Gary said: “We all learnt a lot on the day, including myself, and it was good to meet other people in the industry who are passionate about building and developing skills with new products.” Although the students had heard of cavity trays, they were not aware of how they should be used and found the training day helpful. Student Tom Dixon, 22, works for a national housebuilder when he’s not at college. From next year, he will start his role as a trainee site manager and will be promoting the benefits of Timloc cavity trays and over-lintel trays to his gangs. He said:“It was great spending time with the Timloc team and learning the correct way to install cavity trays. The hands-on guidance and knowledge that was passed on by Phil has certainly boosted my confidence and I’m looking forward to putting what I’ve learnt into practice.
Timloc teams up with Hull College to demonstrate benefits of cavity trays An East Yorkshire building products manufacturer has teamed up with a local college to hold a training event on cavity tray installation.
T
Phil said: “With our winters seeing increased rainfall, sales of cavity trays are on the rise, as they are more reliable and effective than traditional damp-proof course (DPC) methods. However, a lot of bricklayers and people in the construction trade simply don’t know how to install them properly. They are sometimes put in upside down, back to front, or dry bedded. Because of this, many don’t reap the benefits.
RRNews - Issue 10
“Brickwork contractors are our biggest market for cavity trays, so we wanted to hold a training event to build confidence in our products and show the builders of tomorrow how to use them correctly. It was also valuable for us, as we could experience first-hand any problems that arise, receive feedback on our products and troubleshoot.
10
“We are experts in cavity trays and, not only will we supply them, but we also offer critical support to our customers when it comes to scheduling and specifying them with projects. We will work alongside our clients during the first installation and offer site aids, too, so this was an example of the help we give.” Led by Hull College lecturer Gary Longthorp,
The students from Hull College recreated the structure again on June 24th as part of the regional heat of SkillBuild – the largest multi-trade competition in the country for construction trainees and apprentices, covering 10 craft occupations. This involves building a brick structure from a drawing, using their skills and knowledge. Timloc understands that some customers approach preformed cavity trays with some reluctance. However, the team will gladly visit customers and working sites to provide direct installation and specification advice. Timloc’s customers also benefit from the assurance of the company’s free specification and project scheduling and plot specific consignment service.
imloc invited students from Hull College, who are undertaking their NVQ Level 3 in Brickwork, to its site in Goole. Here, the company’s Technical Director, Phil Harvey, demonstrated best practice on the installation of cavity trays. The idea behind the event was to raise awareness of Timloc’s products and the benefits of using cavity trays correctly in a build, as well as educating the builders of the future.
“I already use cavity trays on site, so it was good to gain more insight on them direct from the manufacturers. However, I’d never heard of the over-lintel trays that sit above the window opening. They proved very useful and I will be giving feedback on them to my employer, to see if they can be specified in the properties we build.”
“We all learnt a lot on the day, including myself, and it was good to meet other people in the industry who are passionate about building and developing skills with new products.” Gary Longthorp, Hull College lecturer. THE REFURBISHMENT OF MARSTON’S HISTORIC CHIMNEY
Marston’s brewery in Burton-on-Trent, is very much the spiritual home of British beer. Still brewing in the traditional way, this historic brewery was established in 1834, using the unique spring water from the Trent Valley that gives its ales the famous sulphurous aroma known as the ‘Burton snatch’.
T
he Victorian brewhouse, which stands in the town centre, boasts an impressive grade II listed industrial chimney, which is a well-known local landmark. Erected in 1875, this eight-sided brick chimney was originally one of two on the site used by the coal-fired boilers as part of the brewing process. However, when the company switched to more modern gas-fired boilers, the remaining chimney was no longer used and its brickwork gradually began to degrade through frost damage.
The restoration of Marston’s Chimney has been shortlisted for a 2014 Brick Award in the category of BEST REFURBISHMENT AND RENOVATION PROJECT. http://www.brick.org.uk/best-refurbishment-renovationproject/
In January 2013, initial investigations by Rafferty Steeplejacks from Stoke-on-Trent revealed the need for urgent repair works. The 41 metre high chimney was in a very poor structural condition, with the brickwork
“This particular industrial brick chimney has stood for well over a century and is an iconic local landmark in Burton-on-Trent. We are delighted with the painstaking restoration work undertaken, which will ensure that it stands for many more years to come as a testimony to the brewing industry” Garry Hollins, Site Engineer at Marston’s Plc.
on the top 14 metres of the stack (which had been added in the 1970s) literally crumbling away.
with subtle red tones, light texture and a weather-worn appearance that exactly matched the originals.
Due to the seriousness of the defects encountered, Marston’s immediately instructed Rafferty’s to install safety scaffolding all round the top of the chimney to prevent any further loose brickwork falling to the ground. The installation of the scaffolding had to be carried out very carefully using a crane-suspended man basket rather than ladders, so as not to risk disturbing any more of the deteriorated brickwork.
Now known as ‘Brickfield Antique’, this bespoke blend of handmade bricks has subsequently been incorporated into the company’s main product range, where it has proved to be a popular choice for other conservation projects and renovations as well as new build.
In the meantime, a comprehensive inspection report and refurbishment plan (including detailed drawings of the brickwork) was put together and presented to the engineers and senior management of Marston’s and to the local council for approval. As a Grade II listed building, the chimney had to be completely restored and also returned to its original height of 36 metres. This meant removing all the poorly constructed 1970s extension and replacing it with 9 metres of new brickwork, which would have to be specially made to match original Victorian structure. Cotswold based independent manufacturer, Northcot Brick, was approached as one of the few makers of genuine handmade bricks with the extensive restoration experience, craftsmanship and the specialist brick matching skills required. Northcot’s team of master brick makers, who use age-old bench mould techniques that have hardly changed over the centuries, as well as one of the country’s last remaining coal fired kilns, created a new line of bricks
The rest of the original chimney was meticulously re-pointed throughout using an English Heritage approved lime mortar, and any loose or missing bricks were replaced as required. In addition, repairs were made to the retaining band steelwork and the lightning protection system was upgraded to comply with current BS EN 62305 European standard. This extensive £¼ million project was carried out over a 21 week period without any safety incidents and to the full satisfaction of the client, the local council and all involved. Garry Hollins, Site Engineer at Marston’s Plc said: “This particular industrial brick chimney has stood for well over a century and is an iconic local landmark in Burton-on-Trent. We are delighted with the painstaking restoration work undertaken, which will ensure that it stands for many more years to come as a testimony to the brewing industry.” For more information, contact Northcot Brick Ltd., Station Road, Blockley, Nr. Armstrong Ceilings fly out of Farnborough The 2014 Farnborough International Airshow made use of both of Armstrong’s recycling schemes.
A regular user of Armstrong’s End-of-Life recycling scheme for the ceilings of the show’s temporary corporate hospitality and business chalets, 2014 saw the first time it used both of Armstrong’s pioneering schemes.
Some 3,000m2 of mineral tiles were recycled for SDD|GES by Hampshire-based ceilings and partitioning contractor RSD Systems Ltd. The Portsmouth branch of specialist supplier SIG Interiors helped load the pallets onto the trucks.
Armstrong was first brought in to recycle its suspended ceilings at the 2008 airshow by the event’s largest independent chalet fitting contractor SDD|GES and back then saved a total of 2,600m² (or 10 tonnes) going to landfill.
David Humphreys, operations director at SDD|GES, said: “We specify the Armstrong tiles for a variety of reasons including their aesthetics, acoustics and ability to resist the higher levels of humidity on site, an element that is supported by a lifetime guarantee.
This year, Armstrong recycled five times that - a total of 13,400m2 (or 55 tonnes) of its mineral ceiling tiles. Some 1,200m2 or 4.5 tonnes were recycled from the off-cuts of the new tiles being installed before the show. Another 12,200m2 or 50 tonnes came from the tiles being dismantled at the end of the show. After dismantling, the palletised mineral tiles, as well as 20 bags of ceiling off-cuts, were collated in a holding area in the exhibition hall then transported by a total of eight Armstrong trucks back to the company’s plant in Gateshead, Tyne and Wear, where they are broken down and used as the raw material for new tiles.
RRNews Issue 10
The corporate hospitality and business chalets, which are used by such prestigious exhibitors as Lockheed Martin, Boeing and Rolls Royce, typically take five weeks to build and fit out and one week to dismantle.
12
“In addition, the End-of-Life recycling schemes have been so successful we did not hesitate to specify the Off-Cut scheme as Armstrong’s recycling scheme is well established and efficient. We knew Armstrong could handle the potential for a much larger involvement this year and we have been very pleased to pro-actively encourage the recycling scheme to the wider site, beyond the SDD|GES scope of projects. ” For details of Armstrong Ceilings’ Off-Cut recycling scheme visit: www.armstrong.co.uk/commclgeu/eu1/uk/gb/environment_recycling_program.html For further information about Armstrong’s products visit: www.armstrong-ceilings.co.uk.

Furanflex can be usually fitted in one day and access is only required at each end of the duct. Kitchen extractor ducts FuranFlex is installed as one continuous lining, totally waterproof and airtight making it ideal for kitchen extractors, providing a smooth easily cleaned duct and access is only required at the ends. Kitchen extractor ducts up to 1000mm diameter and over 50m in length have been installed swiftly to ensure the kitchens do not have to close.
Minimal disruption and rapid installation
Chemical exhaust ducts FuranFlex has been installed in chemical cabinet ducts, oil refinery ducts and with a very quick installation time and minimal downtime production is not interrupted.
FuranFlex black
SE & U ducts FuranFlex can be installed and branches fitted during installation to allow the boilers to be refitted in the same position. This gives a totally gas tight duct for the boilers to operate safely and the only joints are where the boilers are fitted so they can be inspected during routine maintenance intervals. As the FuranFlex is waterproof, it also allows suitable condensing boilers to be fitted. Drainage - Fall pipes FuranFlex has been widely used to line existing fall pipes and as the lining material is only 2.5mm thick does not reduce cross sectional area substantially. This can be achieved even if there is only access to the pipe at one end and leaves a smooth lining, strengthening the pipe.

Fast and effective paint and varnish removal. he original, authentic Peel Away® range is now available exclusively through Barrettine Products Ltd and approved Trade stockists. The Peel Away® paint removal system is designed for the complete removal of accumulated layers of paint with up to 32 coats of paint removed in one application. Use will not damage profiles or other surfaces where multi-layers of paint are removed. Peel Away® is available in two different formulations; Peel Away® 1 and Peel Away® 7. Both are Methylene Chloride free (Dichloromethane).
available so the stripping process can be as complete as possible. This is especially useful where crevices and profiles have allowed the build-up of several times the thickness of the paint compared to flat surfaces. The system will remove paint from many exterior and interior architectural surfaces, including stone, cement, brickwork, plaster walls and ceilings, plain and ornate fibrous plaster cornices, plain and carved or turned woodwork, plain and cast metal work. Automobile, aircraft and marine coatings are also efficiently stripped with the Peel Away® system.
The Peel Away® poultice paint removal system was first developed in 1981 to deal effectively with the problems associated with the removal of multiple layers of old lead-based paint, where burning, scraping or sanding would allow lead particles to escape into the environment with the associated health risks caused by such practices. The stripping compound is formulated to turn the lead into lead hydroxide within the paste, so that it can be safely disposed of without endangering the environment or user.
The Peel Away® poultice paint removal system has been used for very many high profile restoration projects all over the world. In the UK these have included railings and interiors at The British Museum, ornate plaster ceilings at Greenwich Palace, ironwork on the London Underground and delicate panelling at the Victoria and Albert Museum. The system is frequently specified by architects as the only appropriate solution

Flexcrete Launches Clear, Waterborne AntiCarbonation Coating Concrete repair and protection manufacturer Flexcrete Technologies Limited has launched a clear, water-based anti-carbonation coating which offers exceptional resistance to carbon dioxide diffusion. onodex Clear is a transparent, weather resistant, elastomeric coating for use where it is important to maintain the surface appearance of the concrete substrate, whilst still providing excellent anticarbonation protection. Designed for application to external walls and façades, it is ideal for application to decorative concrete finishes, exposed aggregate panels, textured concrete, coloured concrete and other cementitious substrates.
M
It is also suitable for other types of masonry and for the refurbishment of weathered tile facades. With an attractive, clear, satin gloss finish which sheds dirt and retains clarity throughout its long life, it is applied without
a primer and significantly prolongs the maintenance free life of buildings and other structures. Chris Lloyd, Director of Flexcrete Technologies Limited said: “We are excited about the launch of Monodex Clear as its performance characteristics are exceptional. Equivalent air layer resistance to carbon dioxide diffusion is a crucial parameter for clear anti-carbonation coatings and an effective barrier to CO2 diffusion is 50m. Monodex Clear exceeds the benchmark significantly by achieving an

impressive 81m equivalent air layer thickness. “Even though carbonation is a slow process, it will ultimately result in costly refurbishment if decorative concrete substrates are left without any defence against carbon dioxide ingress and the effects of general weathering,” he continued. Monodex Clear incorporates an active encapsulated in-film biocide so combats against the growth of unsightly mould, mildew and lichens throughout its lifespan. It has a water-repellent and dirt resistant finish with excellent resistance to UV damage. Like other products in the Flexcrete range, Monodex Clear is water-based and offers the benefits of being low hazard, low VOC and virtually odourless so there is absolutely no disruption during application. Monodex Clear is successfully accredited to EN 1504-2, the pan European standard for concrete repair. It is a single component coating so needs no complex mixing on-site and is a new addition to Flexcrete’s Monodex range of protective, decorative coatings. Other products in the range include Monodex Ultra (a 10 year system with a matt finish), Monodex Smooth (a 15 year system also with a matt finish), Monodex Textured (a 10 year system with a textured finish) and Monodex UVC (a 15 year UV cured coating). Flexcrete Technologies Limited is the UK’s leading independent manufacturer of technical mortars and high performance coatings. With origins dating back to 1983, the company manufactures a wide range of concrete repair mortars, fairing coats, waterproof cementitious coatings and decorative protective coatings. Cost-effective aluminium windows and doors are ideal for creating low energy use buildings, says Reynaers at Home Leading provider of aluminium architectural glazing systems Reynaers at Home says that aluminium systems not only offer top energy efficiency levels, but also can help to add value to a home too. ccording to 40% of architects, a cost-effective solution for customers looking to sell or wait for a better housing market can be to install larger windows and doors, which lends a fantastic opportunity for fabricators and installers.
A
When adding a striking extension to a home it’s important that homeowners have access to sound advice regarding product choice and are able to find the right solution for their specific build. Amongst other issues they should consider the orientation of their new building, as the direction the rooms face might ultimately help determine their use. North-facing rooms get less sun than any other, and windows with a high Energy Rating will maximise what energy is gained from the sun so it can remain warm throughout the year. Reynaers at Home has a number of outstanding aluminium window and door systems that are able to maximise light entry whilst at the same time improve thermal efficiency. Its high performance CS 77 HI+ window system has achieved a Window Energy Rating of A+ from the British Fenestration Rating Council (BFRC).
“Our aluminium windows and doors give energy conscious architects and fabricators the ideal system when creating low energy use buildings” John McComb, Director Technical Services at Reynaers at Home. The BFRC’s window rating system was introduced to meet the need for simple and accurate certification regarding the thermal performance of window products. Windows are rated on an A to G scale based on their total energy efficiency, which allows fabricators to quickly and easily choose the most suitable window for their needs. The Reynaers at Home Concept Window System had to achieve a rating index of 10 or above to be awarded the A+ grade which is the present highest level. The BFRC rating system checks all of the important factors that contribute to the energy efficiency of a window system, including U-value, solar heat gain, air tightness and sightlines.
Reynaers at Home is a premium brand dedicated to offering the very best architectural glazing products and service to the discerning householder. For more information see the website www.reynaersathome.co.uk, email homeuk@ reynaers.com or call 0121 421 9707.

Jason Pritchard
of Finance said, “The new City Campus is a strong statement of the College’s commitment to provide high quality learning and teaching facilities in the heart of Aberdeen. The design by BPA Architects has given the City of Aberdeen a building that is being admired already. D&B Facades overclad allowed the College to extend the operating life of our buildings at significantly less cost and environmental impact than would have been the case if we had undertaken a new build.”
“The building is now eco-efficient, surpassing current regulations and slashing heating energy costs by up to 70%. Heating energy saving alone will pay for the project in 15 years and the building is set to last for future generations without the need for period maintenance.” Pete Hillyard, managing director of d+b facades.
“The building is now eco-efficient, surpassing current regulations and slashing heating energy costs by up to 70%. Heating energy saving alone will pay for the project in 15 years and the building is set to last for future generations without the need for period maintenance. This represents a very wise investment by the college board of directors for which they should be praised.” Roddy Scott, Vice Principal and Director
NorDan’s unique three handled tilt turn windows achieve a 1.2 w/m2K u value, which is 30% lower than current Building Regs demand. This gives a fine energy efficient solution and delivers on carbon emissions considerations too. The product has been developed in Norway since 1961 with little change to the standard design but improvements to the performance over the years. The three handled window is based on a lock bolt mechanism rather than hinges, giving a fully sealed sash unit enhancing the weather performance in a tall building. It also has added security benefits which
mean that the windows can be safely locked with a removable handle, but opened for maintenance and cleaning. Jason Pritchard, NorDan UK Ltd’s regional director said “NorDan regularly works in partnership with d+bfacades to supply the replacement window solutions for educational buildings across the UK, which dovetail in with specialist insulated aluminium overcladding systems which transform the outward appearance of an ageing building. The result is sustainable refurbishment of unappealing energy inefficient buildings into contemporary accommodation.” D+bfacades is a design and build overcladding specialist, and their unique approach to extending the useable life of large buildings dramatically enhances and upgrades their appearance. Often projects are undertaken whilst buildings remain in normal use, with minimal disruption to students and higher education professionals. Recent projects have included John Moore’s University Liverpool, and Imperial College London which both include NorDan windows. NorDan UK Ltd was founded in 1926 in Moi Norway by the Rasmussen family. The third generation of the family runs the company today which employs over 1300 people across 8 factories in Europe and 6 regional project offices in the UK. Last reported results from the firm were £160m group turnover.

Ryder transforms Manchester Central Library in £40m refurbishment The re-opening of the refurbished Manchester Central Library brought to fruition one of Ryder Architecture’s most ambitious designs, in an inspirational and practical re-imaging of a well-loved, but internally hamstrung building.
he scale of the two main interventions – removing the book stacks from the core of the building and installing a new vertical circulation provision – was considerable, likened to removing the fruitcake filling from a wedding cake and replacing it with sponge, all without disturbing the icing.
T
Yet scooping out the entire innards of the 12,500sqm building and putting in a radically different new structure was vital to renewing Manchester Central Library, making a completely accessible, legible and uplifting space whose inherent flexibility would see it loved and used for its next 80 years - and beyond. Peter Buchan, Senior Partner of Ryder Architecture, explains: “We saw that this listed building was designed to be imposing in a civic way, but not particularly welcoming or inclusive. Our challenge was how to reverse this whilst also restoring the significant key spaces and maintaining the spirit and integrity of the building. We saw what needed to be done at our first visit to the building. Bookstacks took up all of the inside of the building below the main reading room. The floors were supported on them. We scooped it all out, replacing them with new public floors. We negotiated ways around and through the key heritage spaces to open up a spectacular new open vertical circulation route, allowing visitors to read and experience the whole building in an entirely new way.” Location: Manchester Central Library occupies a stunning location in St Peter’s Square at the head of both the civic complex and Oxford Road Knowledge Corridor, and at the apex of the cultural quarter.
Background: Manchester Central Library, completed in 1934, is a magnificent Grade
>>
RRNews - Issue 10
The project is part of a wider refurbishment of Manchester’s Town Hall complex, a civic complex that ranks amongst the best in any British city outside London. The Town Hall, Town Hall Extension and Central Library are buildings of national significance, some of the very best examples of the architecture of their period. Albert Square and St Peter’s Square are major public spaces at the heart of the city and provide a suitably grand setting for these important civic buildings.
29
II* listed building. Designed by E Vincent Harris, construction started in 1930. It has a traditional neo-classical architectural style, planned around a radial, steel framed structural grid, highly symmetrical, clad in Portland stone with a large, square portico articulating the frontage. The external façade steps inward at both the second and fourth levels, with a rustic base at ground and first floor levels and a colonnade in front of the second and third floors. Timber windows vary in shape and diminish in size as they move up the building to the fourth floor, which has no win dows apparent externally. The lead covered outer roof, conceals a central domed roof and glazed skylight roof over the reading room, from external view. Inside, the Great Hall and the Shakespeare Hall are public spaces of great majesty and importance, the former retaining much of its original furniture and fittings. Other public spaces also retain their original finishes and decoration, which had to be preserved, refurbished or restored. The Central Library is one of the city’s most iconic and well-loved buildings, but a very practical and hard-working one, being the UK’s third most visited library, with over one million visitors per year. It is estimated that this figure will rise to two million in the future. The Library is renowned for its collections, a combination of reference and lending resources. Approximately 450,000 books and other materials are issued each year and over 333,000 enquiries answered.
“We negotiated ways around and through the key heritage spaces to open up a spectacular new open vertical circulation route, allowing visitors to read and experience the whole building in an entirely new way.” Peter Buchan, Senior Partner of Ryder Architecture. This scheme will be the Central Library’s fifth reincarnation in its fourth location, since Manchester became the first authority to establish a rate-supported public lending and reference library in 1852. The Free Libraries Act was passed in 1850. Visions and Values: The Central Library refurbishment project is primarily a service transformation programme, underpinned and facilitated by excellent design and construction. Technological innovation and new ways of interacting with customers will make large fixed counters redundant. Increased numbers of floor-walking staff will be part of the move from collection-focused processes to customer-focused interaction. Staff will have access to touch-down PCs, and customer information kiosks will give customers direct access to all library on-line services, including issuing and returning books. A key aspect of the service is the creation of a new archive centre within the Central Library. Archives+ will bring together film, photographic and written archives for the first time, backed by a high quality storage and preservation services, and creates a one-stop shop for family history – collections, resources and expertise. The service will have improved access and interpretation facilities, and visitors will be able to view the North West Film Archive and “Mediatheque”, the British Film Institute’s amazing film archive.
Increased access for customers to the floor space of the Library and its collections is key to the design, and has resulted in innovative solutions to the way the books are stored and accessed. In the original 1934 design, only 30% of the floorspace was accessible by the public. The current design flips the percentages, and gives almost 70% of the building over to public access. Architectural Vision: Ryder’s architecturally ambitious design aims to transform a beautiful, well-loved but internally hamstrung building into a cohesive and coherent delight, able to fulfil its practical purpose for decades to come. The scale of the two main interventions – removing the book stacks from the core of the building and installing a new vertical circulation provision – was considerable, likened to removing the fruitcake filling from a wedding cake and replacing it with sponge, all without disturbing the icing. Yet scooping out the entire innards of the building and putting in a radically different new structure was vital to renewing Manchester Central Library, making a completely accessible, legible and uplifting space whose inherent flexibility would see it loved and used for its next 80 years - and beyond. Description of project: The Central Library will become the home for a new integrated archive service, Archives+, the city’s treasure house and the main knowledge hub for information. The design aims to retain and enhance the original look
The Central Library refurbishment project is primarily a service transformation programme, underpinned and facilitated by excellent design and construction. and cherished ambience of this much loved building whilst providing it with modern facilities and a continued relevance for the next part of its life. Key elements of the design include: t Attractive and simple to use layout with intuitive wayfinding t Space to house non-fiction and reference collections t Facilities and technologies to showcase special collections t Well-designed study spaces, for individual and group learning t Spaces which are flexible and adaptable, to support a range of activities t Performance and events space t Maximising income generation by creating meeting rooms and a performance area t Emphasising the library as a destination and meeting place t Clear customer, rather than collection, focus t Accessible and inclusive

For the collections, the design aim was to give the public direct access to one coherent and integrated collection utilising as much of the building footprint as possible. When the architects visited the building in its original layout, they were struck by how easy it was to lose their bearings just walking around one floor. So demystifying the layout of the building was seen as key to helping customers easily find the resources they wanted, and to create a natural pedestrian flow around the building.

Heat pump selection tool now on Android and iPhone with added RHI functions Mitsubishi Electric has launched an enhanced version of its popular heat pump selection tool to include calculations for ground or water source applications over 30kW, and extended the platforms available to include the iPhone and Android devices.
Homeowners get regular RHI payments for seven years whilst businesses will receive payments for the next 20 years. These can amount to quarterly cheques for hundreds if not thousands of pounds and help make the case for heat pumps much stronger, especially against traditional fossil fuel heating.

extending the range of devices that our selection tool can be used on, as well as increasing the functionality to include ground and water source applications on non-domestic situations, we are helping people to make an informed decision.”
“We’ve already had a huge level of interest in our selection tool because it is so easy to use and helps show exactly what a heat pump can do for our customers,” added Kellett. “This extension will help bring the benefits to an even wider audience.”
For homeowners retrofitting renewable heating or for selfbuilders, the selection tool clearly illustrates how much they can save on energy bills, what the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) will mean for their house and how quickly the renewable system will pay for itself.
The App is now available for both Android phones and tablets via Google Play, in addition to iPhones via the App Store, as well as continuing on the iPad and the web.
The market-leading Ecodan range offers capacities from 4kW to 960kW with either air source or ground/water source options available. Mitsubishi Electric has also designed Ecodan to work on its own or with existing gas or oil boilers as a fully controllable hybrid system.
T
For businesses, the extension also calculates the relevant two tier RHI figure payable for ground or water source on non-Domestic properties, whether that is in a school, an office, a farm, an industrial building, a high-rise, or across an entire estate. “The launch of the RHI scheme has increased awareness of heat pumps in general and this tool shows exactly what a heat pump can do for almost any building,” explained John Kellett, General Manager of the company’s Heating Systems. “By
Under the non-domestic RHI scheme the owner of a building receives regular payments for every kWh of renewable heat they use, if generated by a ground, water or air source heat pump. Tariffs are available for air source heat pumps at 2.5p/kWh and ground source heat pumps at a Tier 1 rate of 8.7p/kWh and Tier 2 rate of 2.6 p/kWh. Tier 1 is paid for the first 1,314 full-load equivalent hours, and Tier 2 for all remaining output.
The company has produced a dedicated website which demonstrates how much a home or businesses can receive in RHI payments and how much they will save over gas, oil and LPG heating. Visit http://ecodanselectiontool.heating. mitsubishielectric.co.uk/ for further details.

Mitsubishi Electric launches Heat Pump Calculator and Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive Heat pump calculator ready for both non-domestic and domestic RHI itsubishi Electric has launched a dedicated Ecodan selection tool to coincide with the Government’s announcement that heat pumps are now included in the non-domestic Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI).

The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) has recently announced the inclusion of non-domestic air to water heat pumps and ground to water heat pumps in the RHI scheme, with respective tariff levels of 2.5p/kWh and 7.2p/kWh equivalent (Tiered tariff with 8.7p/kWh for the first 15% of energy delivered and 2.6p/ kWh for any remaining). “We welcome the inclusion of heat pumps in the nondomestic scheme as we know that they provide one of the most straightforward way for businesses to lower both their heating bills and their carbon footprints,” commented John Kellett, General Manager of the company’s Heating Division. All systems installed from the 4th December are now eligible to claim the tariffs from spring 2014. The non-domestic tariffs are also paid on the total energy delivered, not the renewable energy delivered, as long as the installation achieves a minimum seasonal efficiency level of 2.5. The new Ecodan selection tool allows anyone to examine the viability of heat pumps for their building and shows both running cost comparisons against other technologies and payback periods, which take the RHI payments into account.
wanted to ensure that people considering their options can cut through all this so that they can access all of the information needed to allow them to find the best solution for their own individual situation.” The Ecodan Selection Tool allows anyone with an interest in heat pumps to get an insight into what this technology could deliver to any building, whether it is a single domestic dwelling or a large commercial project. Details are available at the following address: http:// heating.mitsubishielectric.co.uk/ecodanselectiontool/ Pages/default.aspx. Mitsubishi Electric is the market leader in heat pumps with the Ecodan range available in individual domestic units from 4kW right up to commercial systems that will deliver 688kW of heating. The system is already installed in thousands of homes across the UK and is being specified for more commercial projects, such as schools and student accommodation. The installation of 41 units into a multi-purpose development in Kingston upon Thames recently also clearly demonstrated that heat pumps can offer a viable solution to district heating schemes. “The heat pump market in the UK is now firmly established and RHI is going to help accelerate growth as more people realise how controllable, reliable and flexible the technology is,” ended Kellett.
Mitsubishi Electric welcomes Domestic Renewable Heat Incentive launch

payment of 7.3p for every kWh of renewable heat they use in their home, if generated by an air source heat pump. Mitsubishi Electric has produced a dedicated website which demonstrates how much a household can receive in RHI payments and how much they will save over gas, oil and LPG heating (http://heating. mitsubishielectric.co.uk/ecodanselectiontool). “RHI has been planned so that it produces a long term and sustainable growth in the use of renewable technologies,” explains John Kellett, General Manager of the company’s Heating Systems. “It also makes the case for heat pumps much stronger, especially against carbon-intensive and expensive technologies such as oil, LPG and direct electric. “We know air source heat pumps are one of the most straightforward renewable technologies to install and that they will provide a constant, comfortable level of heat to a building whilst lowering running costs and reducing carbon emissions,” adds Kellett. “What we have done with the Ecodan range is ensure that it can be fitted to just about any house that has been thermally upgraded so almost any home could now benefit from RHI.” Ecodan systems are increasingly being used in thousands of homes across the country from new build to solid brick Victorian buildings that have renovated. The market-leading Ecodan range can also work in tandem with existing gas or oil boilers as a fully controllable hybrid system, so homeowners can now be eligible to receive regular payments that can amount to hundreds of pounds a year, for the next seven years, whether they decide to replace or keep their existing heating system.
Further details on the comprehensive range of Ecodan heat pumps are available at the company’s website: www.heating. mitsubishielectric.co.uk.

Eco COMPOSITE DECKING CAN OFFER MANY ECO BENEFITS OVER TRADITIONAL WOOD DECKING Stuart Burns, Director at Dura Composites, looks at the reasons why demand for composite decking is growing over natural wood alternatives. Composites still represent less than 10% of the overall decking market but demand is growing at a rapid rate as end users and contractors realise the eco benefits of choosing composite decking products. This is thanks to two factors – enhanced product quality and the realisation that composite decking can be more eco-friendly than natural wood. Dura Deck is one such composite decking solution; It features a high percentage of reclaimed hard wood which gives it a very natural look but it’s high density polyethylene content and other inhibitors and stabilisers means that it doesn’t suffer from some of the maintenance headaches of natural wood decking. The great thing about an engineered product such as Dura Deck means that highly developed additional ingredients can be added at point of manufacture to stabilise the decking and protect it from various threats including moisture, mould and UV. This means that, unlike natural wood, it won’t crack, shrink, warp or rot during its long service life. It is also
highly resistant to light degradation thanks to UV inhibitors added during manufacturing, which ensure Dura Deck retains a huge proportion of its original colour. This has been proven after a massive 5000 hours UV exposure test carried out including simulated rain and temperature change. Dura Deck was proven to remain structurally stable throughout its entire life cycle. Many don’t realise that products such as Dura Deck are even greener than traditional wood. In fact, it is made of 87.4% recycled materials and can also be recycled after use. In addition, Dura achieved a world first when it became the first timber composite supplier to become FSC® 100% certified, guaranteeing the use of FSC® certified forests in the production chain when this option is ordered. Green credentials aside, the biggest single reason why contractors and end users choose Dura Deck has to be the incredible life cycle cost-savings that it can bring. Dura Deck comes with a warranty of up to 25 years, 10 years longer than the average life of hardwood
decking and more than 15 years longer than the life of softwood decking. When looking at initial outlay, Dura Deck is slightly more expensive than traditional wood decking but it is often cheaper to use because it lasts so much longer and doesn’t require any painting or staining. In fact, an independent report that compared whole life cycle costs over a 25 year period confirmed that a square metre of Dura Deck is £136.14 cheaper than softwood and £381.18 cheaper than hardwood. Proprietary subsurface fixings make the deck quick and easy to install, not to mention barefoot friendly. A deck installer can lay the deck very quickly and thanks to the 6mm spacer clips will deliver consistent gapping much more easily than natural wood planks. These characteristics mean that Dura Deck is suitable to be specified on large or small projects, be they commercial or residential and is why we the customer base ranges from the largest contractors to private individuals. Editor’s Choice SAS International partitioning installed throughout the newly refurbished Derby Council building
SAS International, a leading manufacturer of interior fit-out solutions, has supplied over 700 linear metres of its System 8000 fully glazed partitioning system for the refurbishment and extension of Derby Council’s main administrative and community building. System 8000 single glazing, with ± 15mm deflection heads, was installed in the atrium area with 15.5mm heat strengthened acoustic laminate glass. In addition to providing high levels of sound attenuation the system was designed to provide the strength and durability (line-loading) required. An important consideration for the project was to allow for building slab deflection. Malcolm Stamper at SAS International explains: “A live load will almost certainly cause some degree of movement. System 8000 meets the rigorous demands of large open plan spaces and provides up to +25mm deflection. 2. Clearview Stoves are efficient A Clearview Stove is over 70% efficient while most open fires are only 10% efficient. A Clearview in the living room keeps you warm and cozy in the place you spend most of your time.
3. Clearview Stoves are a joy to use There is nothing quite so elemental as the log fire, nothing that excites the imagination like its flames. It’s one of life’s little pleasures. A Clearview Stove offers an exceptional view of the fire, is easy to light and burns for long periods unattended.
4. Wood is a renewable fuel that’s good for the environment During their lifetime trees absorb carbon dioxide from the atmosphere, provide food and shelter for wildlife and add beauty to our lives. Burning wood releases no more CO2 than would its eventual decay. Simply put, burning wood just warms you, not the planet.
5. Wood and Clearview put you in control The huge, centralized; energy companies can be unreliable. When a storm interrupts the electrical supply, you can be left stumbling around in the dark with no heating to speak of. However, a Clearview wood stove is 100% reliable and keeps you safe, and warm during a power-cut.
6. Wood saves you money! We almost forgot to mention it, but for many, wood is the cheapest fuel you can use. Best of all, it grows on trees!

Mitsubishi Electric has produced a new brochure to highlight the benefits of using a renewable Ecodan air source heat pump in a hybrid situation, alongside an existing oil, gas or LPG boiler. The brochure also provides details on how hybrid systems can qualify for the Renewable Heat Incentive (RHI) and includes information on typical set ups and real-life case studies. Adding an Ecodan to an existing traditional heating system enables homeowners to maximise energy efficiency, comfort levels and reliability”, explains John Kellett, General Manager for the company’s Heating Systems Division. “It offers them the best of both worlds to provide total peace of mind”.

to provide the peak output if outdoor conditions fall below a point where heating in this way becomes more cost effective.
The Department of Energy & Climate Change (DECC) predicts that by 2030 approximately 26% of the UK’s heating energy output will be met by air source heat pumps alone, and as much as 56% will be met by hybrid systems. Mitsubishi Electric has developed the Ecodan range to operate as a hybrid system, allowing homeowners to upgrade their traditional heating system by installing and running a heat pump alongside it.
“Adding an Ecodan to an existing traditional heating system enables homeowners to maximise energy efficiency, comfort levels and reliability” John Kellett, Heating Systems Division General Manager.
The advanced control system inherent in all new Ecodan systems carefully controls which system to operate to maximise efficiency at any time of the year. Including a heat meter will also enable Ofgem to know exactly how much heat is being produced by the renewable heat pump to help with RHI calculations. “Interest in renewable heating continues to grow as the price of oil and gas keeps on rising, so adding Ecodan as a hybrid solution can make a lot of sense, especially when you factor in seven years of regular RHI payments”, adds Kellett.

Selected for their compact size, ease of installation and high efficiency, the Evomax boilers are also extremely straightforward to operate, ensuring optimised heating control within the building. Town & Country Housing is committed to achieving the best standards for sustainability in all areas of the business in line with their Environmental Strategy and Action Plan. The company approached Gas Advisory Serves (GAS) Limited to draw up the building specification for the refurbishment project, as they knew that the extensive expertise of the company would ensure the highest quality, most efficient appliances possible would be specified for Monson House.
RRNews Issue 10
Steve Roberts, Commercial Heating Director at GAS, commented, “The list of specification requirements for the new boilers included high efficiency, reliability, ease of installation and excellent back-up support from the manufacturer. The location of the rooftop plant room also presented its own challenges. The 150kW Evomax boilers and Frame & Header Kit met all the required criteria.”

Interiors & Interior Design
THE INTERIORS GROUP COMPLETES REFURBISHMENT FOR THE LONDON STUDY AND RESIDENTIAL CENTRE FOR BRIGHAM YOUNG UNIVERSITY The Interiors Group have successfully carried out a complete refurbishment of two inter-connecting terraced houses in Palace Court, London W2 for Brigham Young University, working with Dunbar Associates as their Surveyor and Project Manager. The two impressive late 19th Century red brick residential properties in Notting Hill, provides a mixture of residential accommodation and academic facilities for students, academic staff and their families participating in the University’s London based overseas study programmes. The interior design project covered four floors plus basement and a roof garden. Accommodating forty students at any one time, typically for periods of two or four months, the centre had not been refurbished since the early 1980’s. The interiors, fixtures, services and finishes were therefore in urgent need of major refurbishment or replacement. The Interiors Group and Scott Brownrigg (Architects), respecting the historical context of the building, chose furniture with decorative form and function that complimented the style of the building and the floor finishes. The walls were painted with timeless colours respecting the existing wooden panel features and decorative coving. A bespoke traditional patterned Wilton Carpet was selected and manufactured for the principal rooms and stairways The interiors concept has imaginatively preserved and refurbished many of the original features and transformed key spaces including the student bed rooms and bathrooms, lounge, dining room and the library. In addition, a greater range of flexible teaching and social learning spaces has been provided. The Interiors Group have chosen dramatic central pendants and wall lights for the ground floor lobby, lounge and library creating a homely feel. The primary aim of the modernisation programme was to revitalise the ‘home from home’ facility to create a welcoming environment whilst also improving the energy efficiency of the buildings and the internal environmental conditions, particularly thermal comfort and lighting.
These changes will significantly enhance the student and staff experience, greatly increasing the value and sustainability of BYU in London. The Interiors Group have over 25 years experience in delivering Award Winning commercial environments. They are widely proven and trusted by both clients and professional project managers to deliver business environments on time and on budget. Landscaping & External Works EverEdge now in Cor-Ten®
It is now possible to buy the entire range of EverEdge garden & landscape edging products made in Cor-Ten® steel. Cor-Ten® is type of steel which is designed to give a weathered finish without the fear of the steel breaking down. The way it works is that a layer of rust forms which protects the steel underneath for many years. In the last 3-5 years, there has been a real growth in weathered steel being used in gardens. A lot of this has been driven by the Chelsea Flower Show where the material is used in a larger and larger number of show gardens every year. Cor-Ten® allows for a rustic look but gives you the peace of mind that your edging is not going to degrade. Once the layer of rust has formed, you will notice it is a finish that can suit a whole range of gardens. It can be a rustic option in a more traditional garden but also provide a bold statement when used in a more contemporary design. EverEdge offer Cor-Ten® as an option in the Classic 1m lengths, the ProEdge range of 2.5m lengths and in the Titan range which is a more bespoke product which can be made to a variety of sizes. As well as the Cor-Ten®, EverEdge remains available in a range of galvanised options including brown, slate, black, unpainted or green. For for further information visit: w ww.everedge.co.uk

Easy Stair - Temporary Staircase EASY - SAFE
Easy Stair is a temporary staircase which provides access to upper Àoors prior to the installation of permanent stairs. Easy Stair is particularly useful when a project involves the installation of quality, expensive stairs as installing a temporary staircase can prevent damage to the ¿nished staircase. Preventing damage to the ¿nished stairs can potentially save a great deal of money, delays and problems! Where a bespoke staircase is being installed Easy Stair also allows greater time to ¿nalise the design and manufacture without delaying the program. Easy Stair allows easy access for clients to gain access to upper Àoors during site meetings and view site progress. A temporary staircase will also speed up the building process as site operatives can use a speedy, safe method of access (rather than ladders) - again saving money and potentially reducing the program time. Easy Stair is delivered to site fully assembled, it is simply lifted into position secured by two screws and the handrails inserted into either side. The stair unit weighs only 25kg and is available throughout the UK on a next day delivery service. Lighting & Electrical LUXONIC INVESTS £¾ MILLION IN LED LUMINAIRE PRODUCTION Luxonic has just completed a ten-month programme and a £¾ million investment in expanding its production facilities in Basingstoke to allow for increase in demand for LED luminaires. Consolidating all the company’s manufacturing onto the Basingstoke site required an extensive re-organisation of the factory. Engineering is at the heart of the factory and two mezzanine assembly areas have been installed increasing production area by 30%. The introduction of a‘Lean Manufacturing’programme at Luxonic streamlines the manufacturing process, vastly improves efficiencies and motivates the assembly teams. The Lean Manufacturing principle is to create production cells for each of the Luxonic product ranges where a team is now responsible for every aspect of that range’s production. Virtually every Luxonic luminaire has been re-designed around LED technology from high bays to ceiling and wall fittings. Luxonic has always prided itself in having full manufacturing facilities to produce the luminaires that it designs and develops. The new investment now sees an additional Trumpf 3000 automated punching station and a Trumpf 85 tonne brake press respectively for the automatic pressing of steel luminaire body parts and the forming of luminaire metalwork. For final finishing, a brand new custom built Ercon Finishing Systems powder coating paint plant has been installed. With a continuous track length of 44 metres, it enables double hanging of products at an increased track speed, which increases output and improves energy efficiencies. Luxonic Production Director, Alan Ayres explained, “The changes which we have put in place will give us a massive efficiency gain and more capacity to manufacture both LED and fluorescent luminaires”. Nick Tavaré, Luxonic’s Managing Director added,“2013 was a fantastic year for us
in terms of sales and we have seen huge increases in demand for our LED products. This major investment puts us in an excellent position to satisfy this need for energy efficient LED lighting and grow the business in the future”. Luxonic employs around 100 people of which half are engaged in production. Now in its 28th year, and with annual sales this year of £11 million, Luxonic ranks as one of the largest British manufacturers of light fittings and control systems. The company has very green credentials, considering the environment and sustainability in every way from design concepts and manufacturing techniques to energy efficiency of its products, delivery to customers and finally, recycling of product at end of life. It is an holistic approach which leads to enormous carbon and energy savings. UK'S FIRST TILTABLE, FIRE-RATED, IP65 LED DOWNLIGHTER FOR TINY RECESSES
The new H4 FF luminaire from Collingwood Lighting is the UK's first tiltable and dimmable LED downlighter to be fire-rated, moisture-resistant, and small enough to fit a recess of only 56mm. It has an IP65 rating and is fully Part L compliant for 90 minutes' fire resistance, sound attenuation, and air tightness. The H4FF, which tilts up to 20° to either side at the touch of a finger, come in a choice of beam angles (38° or 60°) and colours (neutral white or warm white). Because the luminaire has a low profile, it fits easily into shallow ceiling voids. That makes it particularly suitable for challenging domestic and hospitality environments, including bathrooms and wet rooms.
RRNews Issue 10
"The H4 FF changes the lighting rules for homes, hotels, and other environments where looks count," says Justin Maeers, Chief Technical Officer at Collingwood. "Because it combines so many features in a single fitting, architects and interior designers can be far more playful with their lighting schemes. They can place low-energy LED light within any room in a building and direct the beam wherever they want. There are cost savings too: by making better use of each light beam, they need fewer fixtures." For further information Tel: 01604 495151 or visit: www.collingwoodlighting.com

Right Place, Right Time for Flexim Roof Putty in UK Housebuilding A recent review of NHBC claims has highlighted continuing concerns over the effectiveness of mortar bonded ridge tiles.

contractors. Indeed, tests have shown that when materials and labour are taken into account, Flexim Roof Putty is up to 50% cheaper to install than conventional cement mortars. And just as importantly from a health and safety perspective, the lightweight Flexim strips are not a backbreaker to transport onto the roof and install.
STEP
2
igures show that approximately 60% of all NHBC claims in years 3-10 relate to pitched roofs with the vast majority being dominated by mortar issues. This in turn can account for over £10million of NHBC’s annual claims spend, with the total cost to the industry being significantly higher*.
F
Recent years have seen the NHBC work hard to raise awareness of these issues in pitched roofing, and in January 2012 it introduced important new guidance criteria. This stated that ridge and hip tiles bonded in mortar should also be mechanically fixed, whilst also recommending that mortar bonded verges are bedded and pointed immediately. In addition, the revised guidelines emphasized the importance of using the correct mortar mix, and although some progress has been made in terms of education, the costly problems relating to poorly bonded roof tiles are in danger of continuing.
Successfully tested at wind speeds of 110 miles per hour, it is independently certified by the British Board of Agrément (BBA) and meets the NHBC standards. Importantly, the product is also environmentally friendly as it is formulated using natural linseed oil, and it is therefore ideal for use during sustainable building construction.
However, an innovative, award-winning alternative from iBuilding Products Ltd could well be the perfect solution. However, an innovative, award-winning alternative from iBuilding Products Ltd could well be the perfect solution. Flexim Roof Putty is a ready-to-use, flexible, lightweight, storm-proof roof putty, designed specifically for use in the housebuilding market. It is ideal for both new build construction and reroofing projects, and its impressive versatility means it can be used on everything from bonding ridge caps and hip tiles, to adhering tiles and tile pieces to valleys and roof windows. In addition, because Flexim can also be used to treat a range of other minor repairs and leaks, it certainly pays for contractors to make sure that they’ve always got a box available in their van. Indeed, with all of these benefits in mind, it may come as no surprise to learn that Flexim Roof Putty’s revolutionary properties were formally recognised at Roofex 2013 in Birmingham, where it won the prestigious award for ‘Most Innovative Product’. Reduced Hassle, Reduced Costs Supplied in ready-to-use strips, Flexim Roof Putty is rapid and easy to install and is instantly water resistant. It can also be installed in as little as one third of the time of traditional mortar bonding systems, and therefore offers significant cost saving benefits for both housebuilders and
Jelle Appelman, Managing Director of iBuilding Products Ltd. commented: “Flexim Roof Putty has a proven track record of almost 30 years, and has been successfully installed on more than 4 million roofs worldwide. We are excited to now be expanding our presence in the UK, particularly at a time when the housebuilding sector is in need of an effective alternative to traditional mortar bonding. The product has many unique benefits and it has already gained significant interest from house builders, contractors and merchants alike.”
Flexim Roof Putty is up to 50% cheaper to install than conventional cement mortars. And just as importantly from a health and safety perspective, the lightweight Flexim strips are not a back-breaker to transport onto the roof and install. Available in black, red, grey, light brown and dark brown as standard, the product is perfectly suited to a range of different roof tiles including concrete, clay and slate. iBuilding Products offers full support to merchants wanting to stock Flexim Roof Putty, including trade demonstration days, literature and point of sale items. All in all, there’s never been a better time to find out more about this innovative pitched roof bonding solution. Further information can be found at www. fleximroofputty.com

Roofing & Cladding SPRA launches generic BIM objects on the NBS National BIM Library The first trade association to receive RIBA recognition With the 2016 Government-imposed deadline for BIM use on publiclyfunded projects approaching, awareness of BIM and adoption rates among specifiers is growing rapidly, with almost half of respondents sourcing BIM objects from a specialist BIM library according to the findings of the latest NBS National BIM Survey. The Single Ply Roofing Association (SPRA) is the first trade organisation to have its BIM objects included on the NBS National BIM Library. Launching seven most commonly used roof build ups - which are ideally suited for the use of single ply systems on flat, pitched or curved roofs - these BIM objects can be switched to a specific manufacturer’s product as the project progresses. With commitment to BIM there are real opportunities to deliver improved buildings at the heart of the community (schools, hospitals, sheltered housing etc.) alongside the project supply chain benefiting from standardised information and collaboration enabling better decision-making, improved productivity, increased efficiency, competitive advantage and higher profitability. And sourcing BIM objects from an industry-leading library means objects are always current and accurate. Quick and easy to download, specifiers have the additional reassurance that the seven roof types available on the NBS National BIM Library have been designed to SPRA standards and guidelines. “Following our discussions with NBS last year concerning the role of industry-recognised trade bodies assisting with the development of generic BIM objects, we are delighted to be the first trade organisation to have launched our BIM programme,” commented James Talman, SPRA CEO.

THE IMPORTANCE OF BESPOKE PEG TILE SIZES FOR HISTORIC BUILDINGS
Kent Peg Tiles hold a special place in the English architectural landscape. Dating back as far as the 12th and 13th centuries, the name ‘Peg Tile’, originally came from the softwood pegs, which were driven through two square holes in the top edge of the tiles, attaching them to the laths or battens.

espite the Royal Charter of 1477 decreeing that plain tiles should be standardised to 10½” x 6¼” countrywide, Kent Peg Tiles remained typically 10” x 6” (255mm x 150mm) but the reality is that the sizes of Peg Tiles found on historic buildings can vary greatly, exhibiting their own regional variations.
Specified on new and refurbished private residences, commercial developments, agricultural buildings, barn and oast conversions, Tudor roof tiles have helped restore historic houses, churches and various National Trust and English Heritage properties in the UK as well as being exported to continental Europe and North America.
Although the differences in size may seem minimal, they can be highly visible when restoration or extension work is being carried out, so it is important to always keep to the exact sizing of the original tiles. For this reason, Tudor Roof Tile Co Ltd is offering a whole range of bespoke and non-standard peg tiles designed to match the varied sizing requirements of historic buildings. Made from the finest English clay, the meticulous detailing of Tudor’s Peg Tiles carefully recreates the time weathered look of the ancient peg tiles of Kent. Manufactured using traditional craftsmanship, each tile is hand pressed, moulded and trimmed, and then strengthened by advanced
Tudor Roof Tile Co Ltd, Britain’s foremost independent handmade roof tile manufacturer, combines the finest English natural clays with traditional skills, to create unique and much sought after aesthetic qualities.
“Our experience in hand making tiles allows us to manufacture authentic looking historic Peg Tiles with dimensional sizes that will complement a much wider range of heritage buildings than those produced to modern standards,” Paul Lythgoe, Managing Director of Tudor Roof Tile Co Ltd. MAIN

firing techniques to give the final product exceptional performance and durability which is performance guaranteed for many years to come. Both square and round peg holes can be made to accommodate a variety of wooden or metal pegs, making them ideal for specialised historical renovation and restoration work. “Our experience in hand making tiles allows us to manufacture authentic looking historic Peg Tiles with dimensional sizes that will complement a much wider range of heritage buildings than those produced to modern standards,” said Paul Lythgoe, Managing Director of Tudor Roof Tile Co Ltd. “Furthermore, in view of the short supply and soaring costs of second hand reclaimed Peg Tiles, the handmade replacements that we are making are proving to be an excellent alternative for architects and conservationists.”
The complete range is available from leading roofing and builders merchants and is backed by the company’s 30 year guarantee.
In addition, the company is extending its popular price promotion on its standard 10” x 6” (255mm x 150mm) range of Kent Peg Tiles for a further twelve-month period, during which this standard sized Peg Tile will be available at the same price as its range of clay plain tiles. All Tudor roof tiles are CE marked to EN 1304:2005(E) standards for frost resistance, water impermeability and flexural strength. They are available in six traditional sandfaced colours: Medium Antique, Dark Antique, Red Antique, Sussex Brown, Sussex Red and Weathered Earth complemented by the Jubilee ‘variegated’ colourways. Non sand-facing (natural clay) is also available on bespoke sized tiles. Tudor roof tiles are available from leading roofing and builders merchants. For more information, contact Tudor Roof Tile Co.
