LRIGHT, alright, just calm down. I promise you this is the last editorial in the series and next month I’ll get back to talking about crappy late night TV shows. It’s just that I thought it might be a good idea to have a look at some less exotic, more ‘down to earth’ electric cars. I’ll start with the Nissan Leaf. There are lots of these around. I just checked Ebay and there are 95 second-hand ones on sale from £5000-£30,000. I went down to see Hugh (the sax), who writes for Broad Sheep, has had a Leaf and is pretty genned up on the electric car market. We went off for a ride and it’s very straight forward and simple without all the bells and whistles you might find on say, the BMW. However, it is super comfortable, plenty fast, smooth and silent and very easy to drive. What’s more, Hugh has researched information about some of the older ones (they have been around since 2011) and it seems they are very reliable and the batteries hold up pretty well. In the light of this £10,000 for a 2015 model with say 25,000 miles on the clock seems a pretty safe bet except for one thing - the range. All the older ones have a 24kwh battery which, when new might be good for 85 miles, but if it’s a few years old and you have the heater on it might be more like 50 miles on a full charge. This is fine if you’re just using it for shopping or going to the station, but not so fine if you want to go and see your cousin in Edinburgh. Then you are at the mercy of your mobile phone, the Zap Map app and the vagaries of British charging points. We will come back to this horror show later. First let’s talk about Peter, who lives up the hill, completely off grid and who has a VW Golf electric. Peter is an engineer and consequently, approached purchasing an electric car in a very systematic way. He started by logging all the trips he and his partner made in the months leading up to buying the car to see how many trips were feasible in the electric. He also needed to know how much power it was going to take from his solar and wind powered domestic system. Unlike most electric owners Peter needs to charge during the day when his solar panels are active and not during the night when it would be stealing the hard-earned watts that the house batteries are holding. We went for a spin in the VW which has 35kwh batteries and a few more gizmos than the Nissan. Peter, a life-long petrol head and race car enthusiast admitted the VW was such a pleasure to drive that these days he much preferred it over his petrol-powered Audi. Once again, the ride was quiet, the car was very comfortable and pretty fast, especially on acceleration. Although they are mostly using it for shortish trips, under 100 miles, Peter did admit they were planning to drive to the Isle of Eigg, the island off the West coast of Scotland that runs entirely on renewable energy, just to see how difficult it was to deal with Britain’s haphazard charging infrastructure.

Finally, I met up with Lucy B in order to have a spin in her BMWi3. I was pretty keen to have a go because this is a proper, blank paper, electric car design - lightweight chassis, skinny wheels, futuristic body design, much use of recyclable materials and fast! Lucy admitted she’d been sold it by a rather over-enthusiastic BMW salesman who had exaggerated the mileage and made much of the use of natural materials in the interior. That being said it was proper quick and a pleasure to drive. It also has a really excellent regenerative braking system. However, once again the range is a problem. The 150 mile range the salesman was boasting about turned out to be far from the truth. Lucy found the onboard screen and computer hard to get her head round and the normal 13amp charge point at their house was no use, so she had to spend an extra grand having a proper charging point installed. She was also horrified to discover that wacking the heater on full blast knocked up to 20 miles off her possible range and she has subsequently decided to carry a hot water bottle on long trips! Email: info@broadsheep.com Website: www.broadsheep.com

So what is the deal with the useless national charging system? I will let Hugh explain it in words of one syllable, but I’ll try and cut out the obscene ones. “To put in concisely the current nationwide electric car charging system is a ******* nightmare”. “If you have a Tesla, well good on you Jack, you’re alright. There are Tesla fast charging points over most of the UK. As for the rest of you, tough”. “There is currently a real mish-mash of providers. Ecotricity, Electric Highway, Shell, BP, Tesco, Chargemaster, Ionity and there are local authority and community charge points. Now lots of these different providers have different ways of accessing their chargers. Some you subscribe and it comes directly from your bank account, some you pay monthly and have a swipe card, some you pay 30p per kilowatt at a petrol station, some you can use a credit card and some are free! Then there are the different plugs and sockets to contend with. The Nissan Leaf for example will plug into the 50kw chargers but not the 22kw chargers”. So as you can appreciate, it’s like the bloody Wild West out there and it is desperately in need of a government body to grab it by the throat and insist on two things. 1. You can access any public charging point with any electric car. 2. You can pay at any access point with either a credit card or phone. As for Tesla, who seem to have it all under control you should only be allowed to buy one if you are a genuine V.I.P, say a member of the Royal family or a contestant on Love Island! Hear! Hear! B

ROAD Sheep readers of a certain age will doubtless remember Mr. Bun the Baker, and Mr. Stitch the Tailor. Well, you’re about to meet Mr. Groat the Mortgage Advisor, a man with a voice like trudging through gravel. Imagine the scene. Forms had been filled in, but before making his final decision he needed to interrogate me.

‘Mr. Groat, I’m not accusing you of lying. But you do know what my equity is, whereas I don’t. It’s a simple epistemological misunderstanding and if you would let me tell you a story about two vicars discussing infant baptism I’m certain all would become clear.’

Things did not start well. My fault. Nerves. I got his name wrong. ‘Thank you so much for seeing me, Mr. Grunt’ was not the best opening gambit. But I needn’t have worried - my mother’s favourite maxim was spot on: ‘things are never so bad they can’t get a bit worse’. She was right. They did.

‘There were two vicars. One asked the other if he believed in infant baptism. The second vicar replied that he didn’t need to believe in it: he’d seen it done.’

‘Now, tell me, what is your equity?’ I had been studying enough linguistic philosophy to unbalance anyone’s mental well-being, which explained my first problem: what exactly did he mean by ‘now’? I decided, however, to put that aside for the moment and concentrate instead on solving the more immediate problem. A simple question should do the trick. ‘What IS my equity?’ I asked. ‘That’s right’, echoed The Grunt, ‘what is your equity?’ ‘But what IS my equity?’ I asked again. ‘Why do you keep repeating the question? Is there something wrong with you?’ He was getting agitated. Sufficiently agitated to imagine it would clear things up if he spelt the word - ‘your E Q U I T Y - what is it?’ ‘That’s what I’m hoping you’ll tell me. What IS my equity?’ ‘You mean you don’t know what your equity is? - in which case we’re both in the same boat and I’m afraid that boat is about to sink!’ Years of philosophical training came to the rescue.‘You are wrong. We’re not in the same boat. With respect, I’m sure you know full well what my equity is whereas I...’ ‘Young man, if I knew what your confounded equity was do you imagine I would be sitting here asking you to tell me? Never in all my experience have I met such pig-headedness. Not to mention being accused of lying.’

‘Lord preserve us! Vicars? Infant baptism? Episto what? Ye gods!’

‘What that makes clear is that it’s not a mortgage adviser you need, it’s a psychiatrist.’ ‘You see, Mr. Groat, you made an elementary epistemological mistake by failing to grasp the category of question I was asking. You failed to distinguish between my need for a definition and your need for a description. But then I guess you are not too familiar with Wittgenstein’s work on private language games?’ Let’s draw a veil over the rest of the conversation. Suffice it to say that eventually a mortgage was arranged, with a different building society. The Grunt, apparently, took early retirement. You’re no doubt wondering what are the chances of this having anything even remotely to do with prejudice [the subject of my November Broad Sheep article]. Well, it does touch on a couple of crucial issues, if any prejudice that divides people is to be dissolved. Secondly [yes, I’m starting with secondly], there is the inescapable need to be speaking the same language - to understand what exactly is being said, what precisely is being asked and where the speaker is ‘coming from’. But first, for there to be even the slightest possibility of speaking the same language, there is the underlying requirement to listen. And listening is darned hard work, and getting harder. Dying out, even. Much easier to tell someone what you think than to try to understand what they think. Prejudice is a root cause of many of today’s most menacing and stubborn problems. Its presence is usually felt most clearly in those activities where self-interest is a key player, such as politics, religion, banking, etc. All prejudices depend on inadequate information, a lack of curiosity and an unwillingness to empathize. It follows that no progress towards dissolving a prejudice can happen without the willingness of interested parties to listen, to have the courage to listen attentively thereby taking the risk of seeing attitudes and relationships transformed. While listening on its own may well not be enough to overcome a prejudice it is at least the vital first step. A skill we urgently need to rediscover. It’s the difference between a necessary and a sufficient condition.

Isn’t that right, Mr. Groat?

Letter Dear Editor “Rape of the Fair Country” Having almost managed to untangle the confused, and clearly misunderstood picture of Wales portrayed by Pete Smith in his letter to your last edition, it might be helpful to clarify some of his misconceptions. The same Welsh communities which were exploited to fuel the industrial Midlands are now expected to sacrifice rural Wales for the growth of the same capitalist-industrialist machine. One form of grime and mire is merely being replaced by another - venture capitalism. To quote another Pete, “Meet the new boss, same as the old boss”. Once again we are being asked to blandly accept the disputable claim that economic growth requires increased energy generation. Hardly ever do we hear the call to seriously reduce our energy consumption and wastage. Please don’t fall for old greenwash without thoroughly checking facts first. As long as schemes like Hendy Windfarm are funded by venture capitalism, and the few benefit financially, they can never be accepted as community projects. Remember what happened with the export of Welsh water. Many of us are still working for the Pharaohs. Agreed, we certainly need to reconsider our management of the land for the benefit of all, but this requires a better understanding of the current land use than “clear felled upland for industrial wool production”. This isn’t the Amazon we’re talking about, and wool production ceased to be profitable decades ago. As Hendy windfarm was mentioned, it is important to understand exactly what has/has not happened “for whatever reason”, and the reasons are important. It was refused planning consent by Powys CC and recommended for refusal by an expert Planning Inspector at appeal. The decision was overturned by a minister who admitted that the details were left to advisors, no doubt recruited from the wind industry. The site was never identified as a potential wind site in the AECOM survey in 2018. The erection of the first turbine was rushed, and powered up by diesel generators to qualify for a massive furure payment from the taxpayer, ignoring many planning conditions and using an illegal entrance onto common land which should have been protected. The developers are not members of the industry body Renewable UK and the financial backers were simultaneously brokering a deal with a major Nuclear Energy developer. Under current guidelines the project cannot be classed as sustainable because it interferes with the migration of birds, possibly the biggest starling roost in the UK. How Green is all that? For the record, rather than engaging in “opposition to the future”, groups like CPRW are actually doing the job that Planning Departments and Natural Resources Wales should be doing to limit the damage caused by poorly regulated development in rural Wales. Nigel Dodman

cinema THE GENTLEMEN (18) Writer/director Guy Ritchie’s canon has been decidedly patchy of late, with clunkers like ROCK ’N’ ROLLA and his MAN FROM U.N.C.L.E. re-boot only somewhat redeemed by his two SHERLOCK HOLMES capers. However THE GENTLEMEN is a glorious return to LOCK, STOCK form with Hugh Grant as Fletcher, a muck-raking tabloid hack using his criminal underworld nous to put one over on Matthew McConaughey’s Pearson, a sophisticated but violent gangster trying to retire from his hash-dealing empire. Grant delivers perhaps his greatest against-type performance since his Jeremy Thorpe impersonation in the t.v. docu-drama or his principled young doctor in 1996’s EXTREME MEASURES, and a stellar cast including Michelle Dockery as McConaughey’s ice-cool wife, Charlie Hunnan as his jaded lieutenant, Colin Farrell as a bent boxing coach and Eddie Marsan as the tabloid editor who must reluctantly deal with Fletcher. The language is hugely profane, the jump cuts a tad unnerving but this is Ritchie at his hugely entertaining best. All reviews by Mark Williams

THE PERSONAL HISTORY OF DAVID COPPERFIELD (PG)

Lauded for its colour-blind casting and impudent take on Charles Dicken’s semi-autobiographical masterwork, Armando Ianucci’s follow-up to the hilarious DEATH OF STALIN sees the director moving away from the biting satire of THE THICK OF IT and VEEP and into rather more whimsical story-telling. The ever appealing Dev Patel plays the eponymous hero as a young man, with Jairaj Varsani as his rather darling younger self, and although Ianucci messes with the novel’s chronology it stays on the narrative rails and is thoroughly engaging. In this latter regard the deployment of Tidla Swinton as imperiously barking mad Betsy Trottwood, Hugh Laurie as her equally batty lodger, Peter Capaldi as a self-denying Mr Macawber and Paul Whitehouse as kind-hearted Mr Pegotty are huge assets, with only Ben Wishaw as the initially obsequious Uriah Heap slightly failed to convince.

ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD (18) Like Guy Ritche’s THE GENTLEMEN, Quentin Tarantino’s ONCE UPON A TIME IN HOLLYWOOD marks a huge return to form, and indeed both films share a penchant for sly tension, intoxicating production design and quick-fire editing. However Tarantino paints against a bigger landscape in this case the gilded 1969 Los Angeles with Leonardo DiCaprio as fading TV action hero, Rick Dalton, and Brad Pitt, deserving his Oscar as Dalton’s stunt-man and probably only real friend, Cliff Booth. Morally if ambiguously supported by Booth, Dalton is trying to get ahead in movies, not helped by Al Pacino’s hilariously smarmy theatrical agent or Kurt Russell’s antsy stunt co-ordinator, and the script and performances are dripping with wry humour and, as you might expect, copious filmic references. But the gradual segue into the Manson family story – Dalton’s neighbour is Sharon Tate (Margot Robbie, reliably sensational) – augurs a jaw-dropping ending alone worth the ticket price.

R PERNICKETY always enjoys a visit to Y Gelli, or Hayon-Wye, as the locals call it. He is also keenly attuned to the concept of time and motion and likes to have multiple incentives to justify the time spent driving there. The need to drop off a fine book for consideration by the grandes fromages of the Hay Festival, a wish to canvas views from a well-known local cricket hack on a famous English cricketer as whose autobiographical spectre Mr P is currently acting, and the editor of the Woolly Organ snapping at his heels for the monthly opus, prompted him to book a table for two at a newish eating place in the town. Regrettably, he’d completely missed the previous incumbent of the building – St John’s Place – which had been widely praised. On a wet Wednesday afternoon in February, Hay was not inspiring; most of the shops were closed, and the town was so deserted you might have thought that the Coronavirus had struck and all the inhabitants had self-isolated. Having delivered his book, Mr P pottered around Booth’s bookshop, failing to find any copies of his own books in the fiction shelves before retiring to the Blue Boar for a pre-dinner pint of Tim Taylors. Making his way to Chapters to claim his table, he observed that of all the places in town, the only one that showed any sign of a pulse was Tomatitos Tapas Bar, which Mr P reviewed enthusiastically some years ago. He was always a little sceptical about the tapas bar concept finding traction in England (or Wales), especially in small rural towns, but Tomatitos has been around long enough to show that Spanish food can work. Even in Ludlow, Mr P and his Lovely companion recently spent a reviving lunchtime on a vile wet Sunday in the lovely old first floor bar of The Angel which serves especially good Iberian food and wine. While they were sitting lazily at a table in one of the beautiful c18th bay windows, grumbling about the columnists in the Sunday Times (especially Jeremy Clarkson), el patrón suggested they try a steak of Secreto Ibérico de Bellota, a special piece of meat hidden behind the shoulder and below the back fat of the Spanish pata negra pig, one of the few pork cuts that can be cooked rare, tender and succulent – a great treat which Mr P commends. But back to Y Gelli and Chapters. Within a stone building of ecclesiastical heritage, the restaurant occupies a smallish space – once, perhaps, a meeting room for the adjoining chapel. As far as Mr P can judge from pictures of the previous incarnation the new owners have done little to change the furniture and things that the last people left – which is a pity. Hard, bent ply chars, anonymous square tables devoid of napery and bland lighting give the place the anaemic look of a new university’s student union. All surfaces are hard and bare, giving a cold starkness to the room, with not even a curtain to soften the effect. Walking in from the blustery moistness outside, Mr P wasn’t much cheered by what he found. Mr P’s guest, the LCH, arrived soon afterwards, an enthusiastic consumer of good wine and fine food, always on the search for the perfect nosebag. They both needed firing up a little and made a quick wine choice, an enjoyable Rioja at £17 the bottle (which the list claimed was French.) They opted at Mr P’s insistence for the four course Table d’hôte at £38 a head (rather than six

courses at £52) – high prices by Hay standard’s, prompting Mr P to wonder how often all 24 seats in the restaurant are filled. The menu looked encouraging, with the added enjoyment of not having to make any choices. A couple of amuse bouches composed, Mr P gathered, of, among other things, seaweed butter, were presented, and the LCH allowed him to eat them both. The first course, Heritage Beetroot, Sloe Gin & Yoghurt arrived looking, Mr P’s guest suggested, like a pretty, wobbly little tump of raspberry jelly. Mr P, although always prejudiced against anything that describes itself as ‘heritage’ – a much degraded term – consumed his with pleasure and fascination. The Sloe gin jelly covered a bed of inexplicably crunchy tiny beetroot cubes. The LCH vigorously nodded his agreement that it was packed with diverse flavours and textures, despite its appearance which he thought deceptive in confounding expectations. Course number two was billed as Cured Monkfish, Jerusalem Artichoke, Apple & Chives. The LCH had already expressed an aversion – if not a downright allergy – to any plants of the Allium family and the chef considerately omitted the chives for him. He enjoyed the monkfish – what there was of it – remarking pointedly that these were not Herefordshire farmers’ portions. He got the apple, too, but failed to recognise the artichoke. For Mr P the fish was perfect and well served by the subtle flavours that accompanied it. The meat course arrived – Herefordshire Beef, Kohlrabi, Leek & Peppercorn Sauce, minus leeks for the LCH, who contemplated its visual composition for a moment before eating. ‘There’s an interesting collection of shapes here,’ he said appreciatively. ‘I’m trying to think of the name of the artist that would have produced something like this. We’ve got a circle, three triangles, a cylinder and a parallelogram.’ ‘Braque?’ Mr P suggested, agreeing that there was an extra ocular interest to the dish. The parallelogram – a half-inch slice of beef – was perfect in colour, texture and tenderness. One of the triangles was a chunk of tasty braised kohlrabi. A softer triangle was, perhaps, mashed leek. Whatever it was, the whole dish was supreme, even allowing Mr P to forget the stark surroundings for a while as the CH expanded on his history of fifty years of cricket. The last course, Chocolate Delice, Pumpkin & Lime was so good that the quite finicky LCH asked for seconds. He also wondered whether they might pop over to Tomatitos for a bowl of patatas bravas as a top-up. Mr P needed no topping-up, happy to announce that his guts were in a state of perfect equilibrium and fulfilment. He paid his bill of £115 wishing only that the ambience and the appearance of the place might better have reflected the quality of the food. Mr Pernickety

grass roots Meat Versus Gloop! Is Livestock Farming on the Skids?

F

OR once in a blue moon this column actually touches on grass roots, or, at least it will attempt to. My thoughts in this area began with a programme about food and farming, presented by the Guardian columnist George Monbiot. Because of bad planning and technical incompetence, I did not actually see the programme, Apocalypse Cow! But in the best traditions of shoddy journalism, I did not want to let that put me off! So instead I managed to read a column that Monbiot wrote to accompany the TV output. When I read it I felt quite relieved that I had not actually had to watch the programme. As far as I can tell, it predicted that conventional farming was on the skids and would be gone, collapsed, within a decade or two. One lobby group backing conventional farming seemed to think that Monbiot was giving it another fifty years. But, as I read it, their view was highly optimistic. He began by describing a commercial lab in Finland, where, in a metal tank, a “primordial soup”, or froth, of bacteria was being produced, eventually being extruded and dried to create a “a rich yellow flour”. Technicians, adding oat milk to the flour, then made the mixture into a pancake, which the brave George consumed. Despite his huge enthusiasm, he managed to make the whole process and the food, sound fairly stomach-churning. An organic farmer I recently met in Radnorshire described the food thus produced as “gloop”, hinting that she wouldn’t really want to eat it, unless forced to. Before Gwyneth Paltrow and her lawyers pounce on the editor of Broad Sheep, or issue a writ, I must point out that gloop has nothing to do with “goop” and whatever Gwyneth does with it. There is an L of a difference! Of course, in Roald Dahl’s story, it was the fate of Augustus Gloop, “the great big greedy nincompoop” to be sliced and diced, added to cream and sugar, and finally to emerge from miles of pipework as a lump of fudge! George Monbiot quotes a think tank looking for food solutions, RethinkX, as predicting that the “precision fermentation” described above would be producing proteins ten times more cheaply than livestock farming by 2035. And this group seems to predict the collapse of the livestock industry not long after that. Although I have a high regard for George Monbiot, he does from time to time go off at a tangent. In March 2011, for instance, his response to the Fukushima Daiichi nuclear disaster in Japan was, to say the least, counter-intuitive. You may recall that following a tsunami which destroyed the cooling systems of four nuclear reactors, the buildings housing those reactors could be seen on television, almost in real time, exploding and disintegrating, day after day. Monbiot’s conclusion was that since the high-level radiation emitted had not visibly killed anyone, then a

54

nuclear power meltdown was not as bad a thing as some environmentalists had led us to believe. On which basis, he promptly switched from being anti-nuclear to pronuclear! But back to food and farming! The implication of Apocalypse Cow was that once we have refined “precision fermentation” (making edible gloop from a soup of bacteria) we can go ahead and sweep away all livestock farming! But even those who are not avid meat-eaters may suspect that it will not be as easy or straightforward as that. A researcher at the New Economics Foundation, Griffin Carpenter, points out that lab-grown food is only the latest in a series of magic bullet solutions put forward as answers to the damage being done to the planet by fossil fuels and intensive farming. The ones he lists are - electric vehicles, carbon taxes, tree planting, carbon offsets, no-tillage farming, carbon capture, wood pellets, seaweed, climate treaties – and of course nuclear power! Griffin Carpenter argues that a transition to a farm-free food system would mean great disruption in land use, and that we must have regard to those who work in the farming sector. He points out that farm-free ultimately means farmer-free, and that in Britain alone, more than a third of a million people work in farming. Whatever view we may take of gloop and any chance it gives us of making food production more eco-friendly, our farming methods still face a massive challenge. For, according to the Committee on Climate Change, official advisors to the government, if UK farming is to play its full part in getting us to net zero by 2050, we need to cut its greenhouse gas emissions by a massive 64% in that time. And, say the CCC, we therefore need to cut our consumption of carbon-intensive food, such as beef, lamb and dairy, by 20% in the next thirty years. There are other good reasons for doing that, but little chance of it happening unless it is made to sound a lot more palatable. Julian O’Halloran
