The EPD Explained
By Wojciech Brożyna - MD of Aluprof UK The EPD, a declaration made by a supplier that sits on a level playing field so specifiers can make decisions based on the life cycle of similar products and their impact on our planet, is particularly related to carbon emissions. Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs) are produced based on EN 15804+A2 and then verified in accordance with ISO 14025 by an independent external auditor. Produced in a common format, the declarations are easier to compare across different suppliers. An EPD is valid for a five year period and is recognised across the globe. The EPD is produced from a Life Cycle Analysis (LCA) which looks at a product life cycle through five stages which are: production, construction, the use stage, end-of-life and the potential for reuse, recovery or recycling. These are defined as Product Category Rules (PCRs) are specific to each product category and are always based on the ISO 14025 standard for Type III Environmental Product Declarations (EPDs). By enabling these standard PCRs products and materials can be compared side by side. The five stages of PCRs are referred to by letter and further broken down into sub-factors, which are: 1.
2.
The production & construction stages (A1-A5) show the impacts of the raw material supply, transport to the production facilities, the manufacturing stage, the impacts of transport to the site and product installation. The use stage (B1-B7) covers the environmental impact for the period that the product is in use. This includes any likely emissions in use, product maintenance, expected repair or scheduled replacement
and any operational energy use and water use such as in cleaning. 3.
4.
The end-of-life stage (C1-C4) considers the impact of deconstruction, transport to waste processing including any recovery or disposal processes. Material reuse, recovery or recycling stage (D), sometimes referred to as ‘Module D’ offers data on the ability of the material to have a second life. Some second lives can be as a lower quality material or indeed in the case of metals, can be recycled back into the same quality material, in the case of aluminium, recycled almost indefinitely.
The availability of this data in the form of an EPD has a two-fold impact, it further focuses suppliers to continue to reduce carbon emissions as the data becomes ‘public’ about their products and, as previously stated, allows specifiers to make choices about similar manufacturers products and products made from alternative materials. To define how the product data is collected for a specific type of product, key components of the EPD and LCA, is yet another three-letter acronym: the Product Category Rules (PCRs). These rules define how the data is collected for a specific type of product. When these parameters are followed, independent reviewers can achieve consistent results, which allows specifiers to compare different products. PCRs are developed and administered by a program operator, generally standards organisations across the globe. PCRs are required for the completion of Type III EPDs as defined by ISO 14025.
affect both the design and impact of other materials in the construction. GWPs that are reviewed across similar materials and products from various providers would be the best approach. In the case of facades, it is important to review the whole-building level impacts. A comparison from suppliers can made be by completing a ‘Building LCA’ which will provide the building’s life-cycle impacts cradle to grave. By comparing the products’ environmental impact for the lifetime of the building into which facades are to be installed and the conditions that the building requires, will offer the best outputs to help make an informed decision. Whilst EPDs are valid for five years, Aluprof are continuously reviewing their LCAs and where necessary review and update their EPDs which are freely available on the company’s website. Project managers are available to explain the contents of the company’s EPDs and complete specification support is available direct from Aluprof UK Installation in the UK and Ireland is undertaken by national facade companies with fully trained installers. Further information on systems and their specification are available through the company’s website at aluprof.co.uk or directly from their UK head office in Altrincham or from their London office at the Building Design Centre by phoning +44 (0) 161 941 4005.
On producing an EPD the LCA of a product (or service) is reviewed by the independent assessor and a Global Warming Potential (GWP) figure is produced and entered into the declaration. It may seem obvious, given the GWP figure, the best option is just to select a product/material with the lowest result which is best for the planet. Not necessarily, as a change in material may

Graphenstone Presents Optimal Ecological Paint Systems Perfectly Suited For The Heritage Sector Graphenstone UK, one of the world’s most widely certified, sustainable mineral paint companies announces that it will showcase its portfolio of products at the 2023 edition of the National Painting and Decorating show (Coventry Building Society Arena). With specifiers and trade decorators looking for fresh solutions to help reduce carbon footprints and reach sustainability targets, the Graphenstone UK technical team will be on hand to talk about the science behind their formulations and explain first-hand what makes their unique product range so special, and why they are so well suited for those working on Heritage projects. With Graphenstone already claiming one of the industry’s lowest embedded carbon footprints (below 0.2Kg CO2(e) / m2/at two coats of paint), demonstrating a substantial saving to most conventional and synthetic paint systems, it will talk to visitors about how to make meaningful Net Zero reductions easily, whilst improving indoor air quality too. Already independently certified: Cradle to Cradle Certified®, Ecolabel, EPD’s, Green Tag, Eurofins Indoor Air Comfort Gold, and being BREEAM, LEED and WELL compliant, it will demonstrate to visitors that with up to 98% pure lime in select ranges, just one of its 15-litre pots can absorb 5 kilos of CO2 as it cures during the month after application. Patrick Folkes, Graphenstone UK Founder, says: “When building longevity into commercial and residential design schemes, we have a responsibility in terms of how these 6
spaces can be future-proofed, taking into account the wider health and wellbeing of the people who live and work in them. Ultimately, it is our role as custodians, and in all our interests, to protect the planet in whatever ways we can. In the past, one of the barriers to the inclusion of natural mineral based paints was the need for longevity in terms of performance and durability. That’s an area where we have been able to make a significant breakthrough; our paints provide incredible durability and elasticity, which results in less cracking or ‘touching up’ and reduces maintenance costs. Not only do our paints have no smell following application, but they are highly washable too. Available in over 1000 colours, I firmly believe our paints are the optimal ecological paint system on today’s market.” Graphenstone’s paint ranges are crafted from rich, sustainable materials such as lime, calcium carbonates, silicates, vegetable resins and contains only trace VOCs (under 0.1% volatile organic compounds) and gives maximum vapour permeability, perfectly suited for contemporary and Heritage projects. Ben Sturges, Operations Director, Graphenstone UK says; “When it comes to Heritage projects, most people want to work with traditional materials, however these can often be expensive and quite impractical. This is an area where Graphenstone paints work well, as they are brilliantly suited to the demands of contemporary living and work alongside the fabric of older buildings by effectively letting walls ‘breathe’. This process which allows water vapour to pass through the paint membrane enabling moisture to evaporate from the surface rather than being trapped behind it. Our paints are classified as Class 1, with Sd ratings of between 0.01 and 0.1. and are tested to a Class 1 wet scrub rating, so perfect for helping manage moisture levels often found in older buildings whilst also

offering the highest level of durability.” Graphene – an extraordinary 21st Century discovery, and an integral patented ingredient to the structure of Graphenstone’s coatings formulations, was first discovered by Prof Andre Geim and Prof Kostya Novoselov at The University of Manchester 19 years ago and won them the Nobel Prize in Physics, opening multiple industry opportunities to radically change how we build and design in our world for the better. This unique innovation uses graphene technology to improve adhesion, flexibility and durability, helping to extend maintenance cycles and lowering longterm costs. Graphenstone will showcase its full range of market-leading products from its GCS Exterior Premium mineral paint range, which has been independently tested to A2-s1,d0 classified as a noncombustible material, helping to prevent the surface spread of flames, to its flagship Ambient Pro+ range which has special photocatalytic capabilities offering air-purification benefits, removing toxins like NOx, SOx and other harmful gasses, for many years after application. The company will also present its latest and exclusive new paint range created in a special collaboration with the world’s oldest public museum, the Ashmolean, Oxford. This carefully curated collection of 16 colours pays homage to art and culture through the decades and demonstrate how tradition and innovation can work in tandem. Sales of this range will also help support the museum’s ongoing work. Graphenstone UK is based in Norfolk. www.graphenstone-eco paints.store

A ‘Walk-In’ The Park When It Comes To Creating A Walk-In Shower Or Wetroom, Bond It’s Focus On Helping The Trade To Work Smarter Delivers Major Time And Hassle Saving Benefits. Kirstie Cooper, Marketing Manager, At The Business Explains More. With many building projects, the basics aren’t just ‘basic’. They’re essential. Overlook these fundamental elements or get them wrong and you can be sure that you’ll have to revisit them at some point to put things right. This is especially true with walk-in showers and wet rooms. 24
These additions to our homes are becoming increasingly popular for a whole host of different reasons. They feel luxurious and look stylish and sleek. They’re also ideal where space is at a premium. And they can be especially convenient for those with restricted mobility due to them being level with the

floor, offering greater ease of access. When creating a wet room, it’s all too tempting to become preoccupied with the more glamorous aspects like the fittings and accessories. Tanking may seem like
a less inspiring functional necessity but underestimate its importance at your peril. At best, unwanted leaks from a poorly tanked wet room or walk-in shower can result in unpleasant odours and ugly marks on walls, floors and ceilings. In more severe cases, the resultant damp and flooding can present serious health risks and even undermine the structural integrity of a property. To help the trade tank wet rooms with exceptional speed and efficiency as well as with maximum peace of mind, Bond It has the perfect solution – our high performance tanking slurry. Think tank
water until it has a silky, batter-like consistency. The resultant slurry can then be applied to walls or floors with a masonry brush or trowel. The slurry penetrates the porous passageways of the stone or brick before drying to create a barrier that is impermeable to water. Under normal circumstances, no priming is required with Bond It tanking slurry. Instead, walls simply need stripping back to the original masonry. This means removing any plaster or render along with any previous coatings such as bitumen or paint. Any loose mortar joints should also be raked out and replaced, and any other loose material removed so that sure the walls are dust-free.
Over the last 20 years, Bond It’s focus on innovation has seen us develop numerous revolutionary products. Our tanking slurry maintains that track record.
Once applied, Bond It tanking slurry is fully effective after just two coats.
A much easier to apply alternative than other waterproofing solutions such as membranes, Bond It tanking slurry consists of a cementitious powder fortified with polymers and aggregates.
On top of its impressive ease of application, Bond It tanking slurry offers the added benefit of exceptional versatility.

One solution. Numerous uses.
Whilst tanking slurries are commonly associated with basements, cellars,
sunken garages and other rooms below ground level, Bond It tanking slurry can also be used as a DPC in walls and floors above ground, such as those within a wet room prior to tiling. In addition, it can form an effective waterproofing barrier when used on stone, masonry, brick, and concrete. This makes it ideal for a wide array of buildings - from modern homes to older properties and even commercial buildings. When using any tanking slurry, it’s also important to repair any cracks or holes in the wall or floor as these can be potential inlets for water. Bond It can answer the needs of the trade in this area too with our Plug It rapid setting cement. As its name suggests, this product cures in under 2 minutes to create a watertight barrier. Bond It tanking slurry enjoys full WRAS (Water Regulations Approval Scheme) approval and is supplied in 25Kg sack. It is also resistant to positive and negative water pressure up to 7 bar. BAFE announced as headline sponsor for Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024 THE BAFE Fire Safety Register has been confirmed as the headline sponsor of the Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024. BAFE has been the trusted independent register of quality fire safety organisations for the UK since 1984 and this announcement marks a key part of its 40th Anniversary celebrations.
Organised by Western Business Media and the publisher’s market-leading titles Fire Safety Matters and Security Matters, the Fire and Security Matters Awards are now in their third year and celebrate innovation and significant achievements in the fire and security sectors. This remit absolutely aligns with BAFE’s passion for promoting quality and competence within the fire sector. The Fire and Security Matters Awards elicited upwards of 280 entries last year and a sold-out attendance of 640 guests for the ceremony. The Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024 will take place at the Coventry Building Society Arena on 12 June. That’s the same day and location as the Fire Safety Matters Live one-day conference and exhibition and an all-new BAFE conference, with the first edition of the Security Matters Live conference and exhibition running on 13 June (again at the same venue). Celebrating achievement Speaking about the announcement of BAFE becoming headline sponsor of the Fire and Security Matters Awards, BAFE Group managing director Justin Maltby-Smith stated: “The BAFE Fire Safety Register is pleased to be the headline sponsor of the Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024. This will form part of several events planned to celebrate and promote BAFE throughout its 40th Anniversary year. We look forward to working with Western Business Media

in celebrating key achievements in the fire and security sectors, while in parallel celebrating our own milestone year in operation.” Western Business Media’s CEO Mark Sennett (the founder of Fire Safety Matters magazine) responded: “We are proud to confirm BAFE as our new headline sponsor for the Fire and Security Matters Awards. These awards continue to capture the imagination of the fire and security sectors with a record number of entries and tickets selling out in record time last year. BAFE and the Fire and Security Matters Awards share the same core value of wanting to shine a light on – and celebrate – excellence and quality in these sectors.” Sennett continued: “We are truly honoured that BAFE is trusting us to be a core element of its 40th Anniversary celebrations by being the main sponsor of these awards and hosting its first-ever conference with us on the same day. We’re extremely proud to support BAFE’s key work in the sector and cannot wait to help the organisation celebrate 40 years of making a tangible difference.” Entries for the Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024 The entry process for the Fire and Security Matters Awards 2024 is now open and, as always, it’s FREE to submit entries. *For more information visit the dedicated event website at www.firesecurityawards.com

FireQual attains Ofqual approval for regulated qualifications AWARDING ORGANISATION FireQual has attained Ofqual approval and, as a result, will now be offering both Ofqual and Scottish Qualifications Authority regulated qualifications for individuals operating in the fire safety industry. Lewis Ramsay, chair at FireQual, explained: “This is a great milestone for FireQual. We thank Ofqual for recognising the fact that making fire safety qualifications as accessible as possible for practitioners in the industry is an important aspect that’s going to enhance the safety of the built environment in times ahead.” Ramsay continued: “We strongly believe that competency requirements are only going to increase. First and foremost, individuals working in this sector will be required to demonstrate their appropriate knowledge as an underpinning element of any work that’s carried out.” Justin Maltby-Smith, managing director of BAFE and FireQual, commented: “This is a huge achievement for FireQual. We are delighted to have been awarded this recognition. FireQual already delivers nationally recognised regulated qualifications via the Scottish Qualifications Authority. However, achieving Ofqual approval further supports the sector in the drive to develop additional avenues that provide access to regulated fire safety qualifications.” Douglas Barnett, chair of BAFE, added: “It has been a lengthy process to achieve Ofqual approval. We are extremely proud to have gained that approval. FireQual will now be developing additional qualifications to build on the individual competence requirements being brought forward in the fire sector. BAFE will continue to introduce the requirement of regulated qualifications for individuals working within an organisation looking to achieve or otherwise maintain their BAFE scheme registration.” 36
Fire Safety
Needs of practitioners It’s hugely important that a regulated qualification meets the needs of practitioners. FireQual’s approach to both new and any reviewed existing qualifications is that, wherever appropriate, the qualification specification contains a knowledge component and a practical component. This affords learners and the wider marketplace the confidence that someone possessing a FireQual qualification has demonstrated not only that they do they have the appropriate knowledge, but also the relevant skills that relate to this. As an organisation, FireQual looks forward to working with additional training providers across the UK that have expressed their interest in delivering Ofqual regulated qualifications to add strengthened credibility and rigour to their current training offer. This news is a significant step in the ongoing process aimed at offering more FireQual-approved Training Centres for individuals looking to demonstrate their knowledge, which is a key element of the wider demonstration of the competency levels required to work successfully in the fire safety industry. *FireQual-approved Training Centres offer specific FireQual regulated qualifications. All FireQual-approved Training Centres are available via the FireQual website at www.firequal.com **For those training providers interested in becoming a FireQual-approved Training Centre delivering Ofqual and/or Scottish Qualifications Authority regulated qualifications, contact the FireQual office via e-mail at info@firequal.com or telephone 01608 656130

Company director found guilty of fire safety offence in Leeds WEST YORKSHIRE Fire and Rescue Authority has brought forward a successful prosecution against Michael Gubbay, director of Tuscola (109) Limited, for failing to provide requested information to the Fire Authority in relation to a premises in Leeds.
During a hearing conducted at Leeds Magistrates’ Court (pictured) on 14 September, Gubbay (aged 63, who lives in Israel) pleaded guilty to failing to respond to an Article 27 request for information in relation to the fire safety management arrangements at premises known as Austin Hall, located at Servia Road, Woodhouse in Leeds. Gubbay, who was present in court for the hearing, was prosecuted under Article 32(2)e of the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 and subsequently received a fine of £666, with a £266 surcharge, as well as being ordered to pay costs of £1,878. Article 27 enables Fire and Rescue Authorities to request specific information in relation to the safety of a given premises.

Fire Safety
Chris Kemp, senior fire protection manager for the West Yorkshire Fire and Rescue Service, commented: “This case highlights how important it is for people with fire safety responsibilities to take them seriously. The maximum fine for this type of offence was £1,000. From 1 October, though, amendments brought in through the new Building Safety Act 2022 removed that cap, providing courts with the ability to apply unlimited fines.” Kemp concluded: “Where individuals or organisations persistently ignore formal and legal requests for information, and notably so those relating to public safety, we will continue to use our powers under the Regulatory Reform (Fire Safety) Order 2005 to safeguard the communities of West Yorkshire.”

European Fire Sprinkler Network: Old technology, bright future Set up in 2003, the European Fire Sprinkler Network campaigns on behalf of its members for the widespread use of properly designed, installed and maintained fire sprinkler and water mist systems across Europe.
We have Country Managers in Belgium, France, Netherlands, Poland, Spain and the UK, and work with others elsewhere.
Firefighters in several countries demand sprinklers in large buildings to enable them to reach a fire safely.
Today most countries require sprinklers in new shopping centres, high-rise buildings, large warehouses and enclosed car parks. Since 2003 the European market has grown by two-anda-half times.
Sprinkler manufacturers are researching warehouse fire protection for more economic solutions and for roboticised warehouses.
There is scope for further growth. We see a trend to require sprinklers in new healthcare and residential buildings and where wood is used in construction. Belgian and Dutch research has shown that sprinklers help to prevent smoke spread, cooling fire gases and reducing room overpressure so smoke no longer forces its way elsewhere in the building. French research has shown that sprinklers and water mist enable exposed wood to be used in construction.
44
Governments, consultants and insurers are funding research on how to protect electric vehicles with sprinklers. Meanwhile with cheaper sensors, companies can offer remote system inspection and testing. Innovations such as these are often not widely accepted until they are incorporated in standards. Since 2018 EFSN has provided the secretariat to the CEN sprinkler working group, greatly accelerating its work.
Scotland reviews the use of sprinklers in converted historic buildings The Scottish Government has announced the establishment of an expert working group to evaluate the necessity of installing sprinkler systems in historic buildings that undergo transformation into hotels. The motivation behind the sprinklers decision This move follows the tragic Cameron House Hotel fire at Loch Lomond in December 2017. Two individuals lost their lives in this catastrophe. An inquiry into these deaths revealed that sprinklers might have “significantly slow the spread of flame and would extend the margin of safety for available escape time”. The investigation further stated: “It was a real or likely possibility that if sprinklers had been installed and had worked to inhibit the extent and spread of the fire and smoke, Mr Midgley and Mr Dyson would have been able safely to escape the building”. Subsequent to this inquiry, the Scottish Government initiated a preliminary group to assess the proposed measures.
They have now endorsed the formation of an expert group “to review the mandating of automatic fire suppression systems where historic buildings are being converted into hotels”. BAFSA’s involvement and perspective on sprinklers Ali Perry, the Chief Executive of the British Automatic Fire Sprinkler Assocaition (BAFSA), commented on the development: “BAFSA has been engaging with Scottish Building Standards on this issue and we hope to be involved in further discussions going forward”. Further insights regarding this topic are to be revealed in an upcoming case study titled ‘The Cameron House Hotel Fire – Lessons Learnt’ authored by BAFSA’s Stewart Kidd. Kidd is also set to present his findings to BAFSA members at their AGM afternoon seminar, scheduled for Thursday, 9th
November at The Liverpool Marriott City Centre Hotel. IFSJ Comment The devastating Cameron House Hotel fire shed light on a critical gap in fire safety for historic buildings repurposed as hotels. Ensuring these structures, with their unique architectures and histories, are equipped with modern fire suppression systems like sprinklers can significantly enhance safety margins. The Scottish Government’s move to convene an expert group for reviewing this is a positive stride towards safeguarding not just the rich heritage these buildings carry, but more importantly, the lives that reside within them. The discussions and outcomes of this group will likely set a precedent for similar architectural treasures across the globe. 45
Retrofit skills revolution needed in London, say council leaders Local government leaders in central London have called for urgent action to kick-start a retrofit skills revolution in the capital. The call comes as new analysis shows the scale of work needed to reduce emissions from homes and buildings. The analysis was carried out by construction industry experts Whole Life Consultants on behalf of Central London Forward, which represents the 12 central London local authorities. According to the research, retrofitting every property in the capital with an Energy Performance Certificate level C or below would require 148,000 person years of labour. This is equivalent to the output of 148,000 people working full time for a year. Depending on the pace of roll-out, by the end of the decade, a workforce of between 19,000 and 28,000 skilled workers would be required to deliver retrofit in central London alone.
46
Most of the labour demand (60%) relates to retrofitting homes, with almost 40% relating to non-domestic properties.
•
The research indicates that the number of scaffolders required to retrofit buildings in the 12 central London boroughs alone exceeds the total number of scaffolders expected to be working across the capital as a whole in the next four years.
Councillor Kieron Williams, chair of Central London Forward and leader of Southwark Council, said: “Retrofitting homes across London and the country has the potential to be a huge win, win, win – bringing thousands of good quality jobs, cheaper energy bills, and lower carbon emissions.
In three other trades – roofing, glaziers and building envelope specialists – the demand generated by retrofit in central London exceeds 20% of the likely workforce for these trades across the capital. Call for action on retrofit Ahead of the Autumn Statement (22 November), central London’s local authorities are calling on the chancellor to: •
Scale up investment in retrofit, including through increasing and accelerating the £3.8bn Social Housing Decarbonisation Fund;
Work with local authorities in central London and elsewhere to develop local retrofit partnerships.
“But we need urgent action to ramp up training, so we have the skilled workforce needed to deliver warmer, greener homes.” Williams added: “Government must invest to pump-prime the market. The stop-start approach to funding over recent years has not worked. It has left businesses without the certainty they need to scale up delivery, skill up their workforce and drive down costs. “We need a new long-term plan, working with local authorities and business, so that together we can upgrade Britain’s drafty homes.”

HS2 saves £25m using smart plant on earthworks The Eiffage, Kier, Ferrovial and BAM Nuttall joint venture (EKFB JV) and UK Caterpillar distributor Finning are using a smart plant approach on HS2 earthworks to save £25m.
EKFB’s smart plant programme, DIGital Graphical Earthworks Reporting (DIGGER), makes use of data from 700 earthmoving machines. The machines feature electronic weight sensors to monitor the millions of cubic metres of earth moved across HS2’s central section. The 80km section runs between the northern edge of Chiltern Hills and the east of Leamington Spa. It is engineered with a series of embankments and cuttings to blend the new railway into the landscape. To realise the design, contractors must move 53 million cubic metres of rock and earth. More than 27 million cubic metres has been shifted to date. Using the Finning CUBIQ digital platform and the “latest on-machine and site technologies”, the collaboration of EKFB, Finning and HS2 is delivering real-time digital insights derived from telematic data from the 700 earthmoving machines. For example, if the live data fed back to EKFB’s Brackley site base shows one of the 60 excavators idling with a load because it is waiting for a dump truck to arrive, the team can shuffle the fleet so it can continue to operate. Similarly, the system enables the onsite team to
50
identify and resolve pinch points on site roads that impede logistics. Smart plant savings EKFB earthworks director Mark Harrington said: “DIGGER is a game changer for EKFB’s earthmoving operations. By providing data that enables us to identify where inefficiencies are occurring in real time, we can implement immediate improvement measures to ensure we maintain optimum efficiency across our operations. “This has meant that we’ve been able to reduce costs by around £25m. A significant slice of that saving comes from reduced fuel consumption – so it’s enabled a cut in carbon emissions too.” HS2 Ltd senior innovation manager Rob Cairns added: “Delivering HS2 remains a huge task. Most of its constituent parts are major, multi-year projects that provide both the test-bed for development of innovative technology and subsequent deployment to enable benefits to be reaped. “Once innovative, efficiency-enhancing technology has been developed and proven on HS2, it’s ready to be deployed on future projects anywhere across the UK and abroad.”
Social housing building 3D-printed in Germany Germany is printing its first publicly-funded multifamily house in the North Rhine-Westphalian city of Lünen.
