FACT FINDING MISSION SWISS RAILWAY INDUSTRY
OFFICIAL PROGRAM
PARTNER
Swiss Railway Industry Strong economic growth in Asia during the past decades has stimulated continuous and dynamic infrastructure development, particularly in the rail sector. Major rail developments include not only high-speed rail networks connecting major cities and individual countries in Asia, but also modern urban rail transit systems in cities of economic importance such as Singapore, Kuala Lumpur and Hong Kong.
As part of Trans-Asia Railway project initiated by the United Nations Economic and Social Commission for Asia and the Pacific (UNESCAP), the Southeast Asian network primarily consists of the Kunming-Singapore Railway that will link Singapore with China and beyond. The Kuala Lumpur-Singapore High Speed Rail with total length of 400 km will effectively halve the travel time between the two cities when it is completed by 2020. The system will enhance the overall linkages in the region and create opportunities for both businesses and consumers. Rail is regarded as the backbone of Singapore’s transport network, and the 2013 land transport master plan seeks to boost capacity by 110% by 2030 through a three-pronged strategy involving the construction of new lines, procurement of additional trains for existing lines and upgrading signaling to reduce headways. The rapid transit railway system in Hong Kong – Mass Transit Railway (MTR) – is one of the most profitable systems in the world. Under the government’s rail-led transport policy, the MTR system is a common mode of public transport in Hong Kong, with over five million trips made in an average weekday. It consistently achieves a 99.9% on-time rate on its train journeys. As a successful railway operation, the MTR has served as a model for other newly built systems in the world, particularly in mainland China. Switzerland Global Enterprise, SwissRail Industry Association together with Systransis Ltd. are planning to co-organize a Fact Finding Mission to Singapore, Malaysia and Hong Kong, with the initiative to help Swiss railway exporters touch base with the railway sector across the three markets, to develop key business contacts with the regulators, operators and manufacturers, to acquire first hand market information and to explore potential business opportunities.
