SIPPO SUCCESS STORY

FOUND NEW DIRECT CUSTOMERS

FACTS PARTNER COUNTRY South Africa SECTOR Fruit and Vegetables OBJECTIVE Find new suppliers and markets

HAZYVIEW TROPICS PLACE Omega Landgoed Kiepersol, South Africa www.hazyviewtropics.co.za

Fruit farmer Kobus Koekemoer of Hazyview, South Africa, was initially reluctant to participate with SIPPO (Swiss Import Promotion Programme) of Switzerland Global Enterprise (S-GE), taking the view his family business would be too small. Now, in his third year of the programme, Koekemoer – one of the few farmers who grows, packages and exports fruit himself – has found new direct customers. The programme helped him to align and improve his portfolio of crops and varieties produced on his farm, as well as to discover that avocados are virtually unknown in Eastern Europe: an entirely new market to explore! Koekemoer grows avocado and fruit on his two farms, and employs up to 250 people in season, making this a mediumsized business for South Africa. His strategy is to build direct contacts with customers rather than going through exporters. Through SIPPO, he had the opportunity to exhibit at the joint SIPPO pavilion at Fruit Logistica in Berlin, a show he could never have attended without the programme’s financial and logistical support. As Koekemoer stresses: “Without tradeshows like Fruit Logistica, it’s very hard to find the right buyers and know whom to trust.” Thanks to workshops and trainings organized by SIPPO to prepare for the event, he was ready to meet clients at the show and make best use of the matchmaking opportunities brokered with potential customers. Koekemoer is now equipped to take his business to the next level. The programme has helped him make sense of his value chain. He says: “After three years, we can look back and say we’ve achieved a lot. And, yes, it has been a wonderful experience.”
