Joseph M. Saggese Marie Gula The Fourth Sunday of Easter | April 30, 2023

From the Pastor’s Desk

Dear Parishioners, “I am the Good Shepherd. I know my sheep and they know me.” (John 10:14)

In the Sacred Scriptures, Jesus presents many images or metaphors to describe His relationship to us, His beloved people. Today, that image celebrates Jesus as the Good Shepherd. From what we have learned about the work of shepherds, we know they spent all day and night with their sheep. The sheep needed the shepherd to keep them safe and find the best grazing areas for them to eat. The shepherd was also expected to protect the sheep from wild animals. Sheep were not known to be the wisest and cleverest of animals. Often they would fall into holes or get caught in bramble. We all know they often wandered away and needed to be found. (Wow, maybe at second glance, this isn’t exactly complimentary of each of us!) The sheep depended on the shepherd. As the shepherd spent time with the sheep, they would begin to recognize his voice amidst the many voices they might hear. The sheep would seek out the sound of the voice of the shepherd because it became one of comfort and protection. The sheep knew that his voice would lead them to what was best for them.

How fitting it is that Jesus calls Himself the Shepherd and we the sheep. Like sheep, we need to be able to hear the voice of Jesus. We, like those who encountered Jesus, are called to enter into that silence of our hearts so we can recognize His voice in our midst. There weren’t cell phones and television, nor the latest “iPad with Wi-Fi +5G” in Jesus’ day. But they were a lot like us. They also had a lot of worries and competing voices to distract them. People in every generation need a voice they can trust, to inspire them, and set the pattern of their lives; someone they can rely on. During the pandemic, we heard so many differing reports and some were even contradictory. We wondered where to turn; who had the truth. While I don’t have the answer for information on COVID-19, I can assure you where and who has the ultimate truth. It is our Good and Loving Shepherd, Jesus. Using the image of a caring and guiding shepherd, Jesus presents Himself today to us as that trustworthy voice. He said to His disciples and says to us, that we need to be attentive to His voice and separate it from all the other voices that tug on us and draw us here and there. His voice, He says, will keep us together and also guide us on our journey. Using the image of the gospel today, His voice will guard our coming in and going out.

We need the voice of Jesus to anchor us as we journey in life. Each moment and stage of our lives, as different as they are, calls out for that voice of truth that beckons us to find peace in the midst of change and sometimes chaos. From childhood to adulthood, life presents different and sometimes difficult challenges. Without the voice of the Good Shepherd, we can go astray and fall into those hidden pits and holes that the road of life sometimes presents.

There are a lot of voices out there that vie for our attention. Voices that promise peace. Maybe we have followed those paths at times and realized they only led to a dead end. So what do we do? Well, the beauty of our Good Shepherd is that He only wishes us to stop and attune our ears and hearts again to Him. BUT to recognize His voice among the many, we have to know HOW to hear Him. So pick up the Scriptures, read, pray and meditate on the Word, which is the voice of Jesus, the Shepherd. It is through the power of the Word that we come to know Jesus as the Good Shepherd who leads us to His peace. The more we can hear and recognize His voice, the more we know how we can trust Him to lead us to what is best. He will not leave us in our time of need. He has promised to be with us. Isn’t that promise something that we need today more than ever?

J

J From the Pastor’s Desk

These days, listening to the news can be a voice that robs us of hope. Strain your ears and your heart to recognize the voice of the Good Shepherd amidst all the voices that surround us. Let us always trust that the voice of Jesus will lead us to the restful pastures. Hearing the voice certainly invites a response on our part. So it may mean that we need to again hope and trust in that ability to love, even if we have been hurt. We should never allow other voices to distract or scatter our lives. So the call is to be centered in the hope of Jesus. It is in following Jesus that we in one sense may lose our lives (at least our old ways), BUT He promises that we will find it anew. What a wonderful hope for us…so what’s keeping you?

On Wednesday, April 19th, fourteen of St. Mary’s High School students received their first sacraments. Four students were baptized and ten others received First Holy Communion and/or Confirmation. This is an exordinary number of young people coming into the church! I attribute it to our phenomenal theology department who teach the truth and beauty of our Catholic Faith. I think our school is a place were spirituality and joy are melded together in a beautiful synopsis that fosters true faith. I am so grateful to the members of our Theology Department who work with these faith-filled young people: our Chaplain, Fr. Dominik, Department Chair and Campus Minister, Mr. Anthony Cannatella, Deacon Rachid, and Sr. Monica Marie, O.P.

Parish & School News

A Reflection by Fr. Dominik Wegiel

If you told me a year ago that I would be baptizing four of our high school students and confirming fourteen of them, I would think you were telling me a joke. Yet on Wednesday, April 19, 2023, I had the honor of baptizing Derek Mateo, Dorothy Gao, Matthew Schreiber, and N’Kayla Washington. I gave the Sacrament of Confirmation to all the newly baptized and Adrian Desmoineaux, Jacob Severino, Marlowe GenilChin, Thomas Galan, Rigo Mercedes, and Ryan Ortega. I also confirmed three of our Girl’s Basketball champions: Cayla Williams, Taryn Barbot, and Taylor Barbot. They are true leaders both on and off the court in St. Mary’s, giving testimony to athletic and spiritual excellence.

It was the greatest honor of my priesthood so far . For me, it marked precisely the purpose of authentic Catholic Education, which is to evangelize and help others form a personal relationship with Jesus Christ.

As Jesus says, “By their fruit you will know them” (Matthew 7:16). It is certainly the case in St. Mary’s High School that our Christ-Centered focus is bearing good fruit in our students.

Back in the Fall Semester, Sister Monica Marie, one of our Dominican Sisters, suggested putting forth a survey to all our

students. The survey asked what sacraments they all received, and it then asked if they would be interested in receiving any sacraments of initiation they missed. We got an awesome response, with many interested in receiving Baptism, First Holy Communion, and Confirmation. With the help of Sister Monica Marie, Mr. Anthony Cannatella, and Deacon Rachid Murad, we organized sacrament classes during the school day roughly once a week since January. The classes consisted of presentations, watching videos, and group discussions with the students. We would also have pizza lunches during the breaks. Overall, it was great seeing the students engage with the material and grow deeper in their prayer life and catechesis.

The Tuesday before the big day, we took the students to the Seminary in Huntington to have a small retreat for them to prepare spiritually. It was one of the most meaningful retreats I had. We spoke about the importance of the sacraments and gave them time to reflect in silence during Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament. We gave them an opportunity to share their confirmation saints and why they chose them. I was moved by one student Jacob, who said he chose St. Joseph because Joseph was the man closest to Jesus, and he desired to be close to Jesus as well. With such simplicity, he showed what all of our hearts yearn for, which is God himself. As St. Augustine said, “Our hearts are restless until they rest in thee.” It gives me so much hope that many desire to know and love Jesus Christ.

The Sacraments are God’s instruments of salvation and means of

“By their fruit, you will know them.” (Matthew 7:16)

communicating himself to us through visible signs. We mistakenly think that God ought to appear in signs like thunder, earthqua kes, or storms. However, our God is a humble God. He uses ordinary things like water, oil, wine, and bread to reveal himself to us. The applause from all our students radiated throughout the Church, expressing the joy we all had in seeing them fully initiated into the Catholic Church. I am so thankful for all the work Sister Monica Marie, Mr. Cannatella, and Deacon Murad have done and for what they do in the school every day. Please pray for our newly baptized and confirmed students, and pray for the mission of our High School. Pray that all of us may continue to grow in our sacramental life of receiving God’s love through the Eucharist and giving our life to Jesus through service to the Church and the World.

Religious Education

Dear St. Mary Religious Education Family,

What a gift it is to be surrounded by the beauty of spring. I cannot help but snap pictures of the beautiful cherry blossoms and sprouting daffodils when passing by them. Also in this time of new beginnings, joy is ever present in the sacrament of First Holy Communion. St. Mary’s First Communicants begin their Catholic journey anew, upon receiving the holy Eucharist for the first time. From the beginning, the celebration of the Lord’s Eucharist has been the center of the Church’s life. And the sacramental life of grace continues in Confirmation with the gifts of the Holy Spirit. It is wonderful to see our eighth grade students continuing their study with Catechists Mrs. Palumbo and Mrs. Sipress. They understand that, in many ways, their faith journey has just begun together with the Holy Spirit.

Let us ask our Lady of the Rosary, to obtain for St. Mary’s First Communicants and Newly Confirmed the grace from her Son to receive Him always worthily and with a spirit of thanksgiving.

Blessings, Mrs. Granieri

Dear Lord, the path to the Resurrection was one of exceptional pain and suffering. It required of You the total sacrifice of Your life. You held nothing back but poured out Your life to the last drop of blood.

Risen Lord, the joyful message is that suffering and death were not the end. You rose triumphantly in a new and glorified body, opening the door for all who believe in You to do the same. Draw me in, dear Lord, to Your suffering and death so that I may also be drawn into the glory of Your Resurrection. Give me the courage You had as You endured so much. Help me to face the crosses in my life with Your strength. As I do, fill me with hope as I anticipate the new life You will bring from all sufferings united to You.

Alleluia! Lord, Jesus, You have risen from the dead and are gloriously triumphant!

Alleluia! All glory and praise to You, dear Lord, for Your Resurrection!

Alleluia! May the glory of Your Resurrection be loved, embraced and proclaimed until the end of time and forever more!

Exposition and Adoration of the Blessed Sacrament with Benediction

Mondays 3:00 - 5:00 PM in the Church

Society of St. Vincent de Paul

THE NEXT SVDP MEETING IS TUESDAY, MAY 2ND at 7:00 PM in the Saint John Paul II Room. New members are always welcome!

We invite you to explore the St. Vincent de Paul Society of St. Mary’s Church. There are no special qualifications to join, other than the desire to join with others in helping Neighbors in need. As a group, we meet monthly. Come decide for yourself if God is calling you to this special Ministry.

Today, we celebrate “Good Shepherd Sunday” where we reflect on Jesus’ care and love of us and hear his words, “I came so that they may have life and have it more abundantly.” By your gift to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul you will reveal the love of the “Good Shepherd” to your suffering brothers and sisters.

Our St. Vincent de Paul Conference is able to help our neighbors in need through the generosity of our St. Mary’s parishioners. Each time you donate, either through the collection slots at the doors of the church, or in an envelope marked for St. Vincent de Paul, you are helping our neighbors within St. Mary’s Parish. If you or someone you know is in need of assistance, contact the St. Vincent de Paul Society at 516-627-0385, ext. 1125, or email SVDP@stmary.ws. To donate furniture, clothing or household items, please call the store in Garden City Park at 516-746-8250. Thank you for your continued support.
