From the Pastor’s Desk
Dear Parishioners, “Try to learn what is pleasing to the Lord.” (Ephesians 5:10)
These days of Lent, and, actually, our entire journey as believers, can surely be summed up by these words of St. Paul. To live in Jesus, we not only have to know Him through the Scriptures, prayer, and the Sacraments, but, in knowing Him, we must live our lives in a response of love to Him. What better way for us to show that love than to live lives that “are pleasing to the Lord?”
In many of our Catholic Schools there is a beautiful motto that has become very popular. It is “WWJD?” which translates as “What Would Jesus Do?” If we spend our days reflecting on what the response of Jesus would be in each and every situation we find ourselves in and act accordingly, how pleasing would that be to Jesus. The very desire to be pleasing to Jesus and to do what He would want is gift in itself. Doing so puts us out of the darkness of sin and into the Light of Jesus. A light that leads us to the path of holiness. Lent is about moving from the darkness and secrecies of our own sin - those actions that shame keeps hidden in the dark - and bring them into the light of day. Bringing them to the light allows the grace and hand of Jesus to transform them into the goodness and righteousness of truth. The Gospel reminds us that Jesus came into the world that we might see the light of truth; a truth that is founded in its fulfillment in the very person and ministry of Jesus. So, each day, in each interaction...ask yourself the question “WWJD?” If we are open to the power of the Holy Spirit and try to assimilate what is “pleasing to Jesus” we can be His instruments in the world and gain for us not only eternal life, but some peace in this one. Pope Francis reminds us that our lives must show forth the good work of God. When we have received and accepted the “Light” we then do becoming pleasing to God. With God’s presence in us, we then become light to the entire world, bringing others to the warmth of the Light of Jesus. St. Catherine of Siena puts it in a wonderfully simple way “Be who God meant you to be and you will set the world on fire.” How great would that be!
Please use these days of Lent to deepen your relationship with Jesus so we may celebrate with even deeper joy the great feast of Easter.
A reminder that daily Mass is celebrated at 9:00 AM each morning Monday through Saturday. Confessions are heard each Saturday at 4:00 PM. We pray the Stations of the Cross each Friday evening at 7:00 PM.
Next week, you will notice as you come into church that the statures and images of Christ and the saints have been covered. The 5th Sunday of Lent has been traditionally known as Passion Sunday. It is an ancient tradition in the Church to cover images in the church as we prepare for the holiest and most solemn day of the Church Year. While it may appear counterintuitive to veil statues and images during the final weeks of Lent, the Catholic Church recommends this practice to heighten our senses and build within us a longing for Easter Sunday. It is a tradition that should not only be carried out in our local parish, but can also be a fruitful activity for the “domestic church” to practice.
The rubrics can guide us. In the Roman Missal we find the instruction, “In the Dioceses of the United States, the practice of covering crosses and images throughout the church from [the fifth] Sunday [of Lent] may be observed. Crosses remain covered until the end of the Celebration of the Lord’s Passion on Good Friday, but images remain covered until the beginning of the Easter Vigil.”
Families are also encouraged to imitate this practice and veil prominent religious images in their homes. It helps us to participate in the liturgical season, especially if we are prevented from going to Mass during the week. Otherwise, we only see the veiled images in church once or twice before Easter and it has a minor effect on us. It is also a beautiful tradition to pass down to our children, who will be intrigued by it and it will make this time of year truly special for them. We go through great lengths to decorate our homes for Easter, so why not prepare for the great feast by using veils?

Religious Education
As we follow the Lenten journey, we seek Christ who enables us to do the works of God. In recent weeks, we have seen our students working on the mission field, answering the call to help feed the hungry, clothe the needy and pray for the sick. Through them, Christ’s face and hands are made visible to the world. Within the holy Church, the works of God are carried out through the blessed sacraments. Communicants now have received the joy and peace of Christ in First Reconciliation. Confirmandi will receive the gifts of the Holy Spirit on Confirmation Day, March 29th.
All are called to use these newly bestowed gifts of grace on the mission field as well, doing the works of God while it is day as the Gospel shares. Just as the Light of the World comes to the place of sorrow to enter it himself, so must we follow in his steps. Recall that only those who were on the mission field to receive Christ actually saw the raising of Lazarus on that glorious day. And so, let us pray to be ever present to God who desires to reveal so much to us. Amen.

THIS IS MY BODY
In our first bulletin article last week, we reviewed the reasons why the Catholic Church requires the Faithful to believe in the Real Presence of the Eucharist, and what that belief means. In this article, and future ones, we will go on to explore the times when God has reaffirmed this Truth in instances known as Eucharistic Miracles.
- Frank De Lucia
One of the earliest recorded Eucharistic Miracles took place in the small town of Lanciano, Italy in the year 750 A.D. In the Church of St. Legontian, a monastic priest, who struggled with his faith in the Real Presence of Christ in the Eucharist, asked God to remove his doubt. One morning when he was celebrating Mass, as he said the words of consecration, he witnessed the bread and wine turn into visible flesh and blood. The blood then coagulated into five individual globules of different shapes and sizes. All those in attendance bore witness to this seemingly inexplicable event. The monk turned to the congregation and spoke: “‘O fortunate friends to whom the Blessed Lord has deigned to reveal himself in this Most Holy Sacrament and to make himself visible before your eyes and to dispel my own
unbelief. Come, brothers, and gaze at our God drawn near us. Behold the Flesh and Blood of our most beloved Christ.” [1][2]
In the early 1970s, the Archbishop of Lanciano, with the approval of the Vatican, gave a sample of the Flesh and Blood to the esteemed Dr. Edoardo Linoli, director of the hospital in Arezzo as well as a professor of anatomy, histology, chemistry, and clinical microscopy. After extensive scientific examinations of the Flesh and Blood, Dr. Linoli came to several astounding conclusions.
The Flesh was determined to be real flesh, and the Blood was real blood, both belonging to a human. The Flesh came from muscular heart tissue with no trace of any sort of embalming chemicals, ancient or modern. The Blood was found to be type AB, the same type which has appeared in various other miracles throughout the world including on the Shroud of Turin. Possibly the most fascinating find was that the Flesh and Blood were in such a state as if just having been drawn from a living person that very day, despite being exposed to both atmospheric and biological elements for over twelve centuries.
Dr. Linoli published his findings in 1976, the report of which was verified by both the WHO and the UN through countless additional scientific analyses. Readers can find the original documentation “Histological, immunological and biochemical studies on the flesh and blood of the eucharistic miracle of Lanciano (8th century)”[3] online here: https://www.
thechivalricfool.com/miracles/themiracle-of-lanciano-italy
The miracle of Lanciano is a display of God’s infinite understanding of our natural human doubts, and His unfathomable Mercy at such. He sent us this sign as a reminder, yes, but also as an affirmation of what we claim to believe. Thus, we must make a resolution to remember always, that the True God is present upon the altar. And if you have received Him today, He is within you.

The Fourth Sunday of Lent | March 19, 2023
The hours are after the 9:00 AM, 10:30 AM, & 12:00 Noon Masses. It is located in the Parish Ministry Center below the church.
Children’s Liturgy of the Word Sundays at the 9:00 AM Mass
What Is It? After the Opening Prayer, children gather and are dismissed from the church with a blessing by the priest, proceed to the chapel for the Sunday Readings and a short reflection on the Gospel, all on a level that children can understand. They are returned to the church at the beginning of the Creed.
Get Involved! We are in need of a few more people who would like to break open the Gospel reading for the children. Please consider sitting in on Sunday to see what it’s about and/or email Jane at bulletin@ stmary.ws.

What is a Knights of Columbus Family?
We are Catholic families building a bridge to our faith.
Our lives, time, efforts, and resources are dedicated to these values: Charity. Unity. Fraternity. Patriotism.
We come from different places, backgrounds, and all stages of life. But the common thread is our Catholic faith. We are Catholic families seeking to improve ourselves and the world.
It’s one thing to say who you are. It’s another thing is to live it. Put your values into practice.
Become a Knights of Columbus family.

O Most Holy Trinity, Who deigned to raise Venerable Anthony Vincent Gallo to the priesthood, and endowed him with precious gifts, especially that of a burning love for suffering and immolation, we humbly beseech You, if it be Your will, that he may be glorified on earth, and that we may obtain through his intercession the particular grace which we ask for with living faith. Amen.
