LETTER FROM THE PRESIDENT Dear Friends, The unprecedented challenges presented by the COVID-19 pandemic have been daunting to say the least. We are blessed to have a firm foundation based on our clear Mission, Vision, and Values and a rich Viatorian tradition from which to draw strength, as we face each new challenge. Our Administration, faculty, and staff, supported by available healthcare resources from within the Saint Viator family, have done a remarkable job of working together to create an actionable health and safety plan. The extensive protocols and procedures they created allowed for an on-time opening of our school year and the welcoming of our students back to campus for in-person learning. Our faculty members are Saint Viator’s “frontline workers” who continue to make considerable personal sacrifices and overcome understandable fears and anxieties in coming to their classrooms each day, united in their belief that having personal face-to-face instructional time with our Lions provides the best opportunities for their spiritual, academic, social, emotional and physical development. We are all inspired by, and grateful for, their dedication and commitment. The Founder of the Clerics of St. Viator, the Venerable Fr. Louis Querbes, C.S.V. observed that “people are bolder when they dream they are doing God’s work.” Our boldness has been on display not only through our commitment to in-person learning, but also in our ongoing efforts to improve on the environment and experiences we offer our students and their families. After completing a Facilities Master Plan in late 2019, our objectives for a major capital campaign were delayed due to the economic impact of the pandemic. This has not, however, kept us from moving forward with engaging select donors who have been less affected financially in order to address our most urgent needs. This summer, we completed a much-needed expansion and renovation of our Counseling Center. Plans have been developed for needed updates and upgrades in environment and equipment offered in the Murphy Wellness Center after 15 years in operation. Our Alumni Memorial Chapel is also receiving some needed attention and minor upgrades. We remain committed to addressing the social, emotional, physical, and spiritual needs of our students through these next steps and invite your participation. We hope and pray that all who are able to will be bold with us in doing God’s work and advancing the mission of Saint Viator High School. I am also pleased to inform you that on October 18th, 2020, the circle of those dedicated to and sharing in the Viatorian charism in a formal way expanded. Four current members of the Saint Viator High School Community made a commitment to the Clerics of St. Viator as Lay Associates and partners and co-owners of the Viatorian mission, including Mrs. Brigette Brankin, Mr. Brian Hansen, Mr. Kurt Paprocki ‘00 and myself. We are honored and humbled to commit ourselves to “proclaiming Jesus Christ and the gospel and raising up communities where faith is lived deepened and celebrated” through our work and actions. We thank you for joining us in this important ministry of Saint Viator High School. Your partnership and involvement makes a profound impact on the lives of our students, the wonderful Children of God entrusted to our care. God Bless You and Your Families, Adored and Loved Be Jesus!

LETTER FROM THE BOARD OF TRUSTEES CHAIR

As I begin my first year as the Chairperson of the Saint Viator Board of Trustees, I have been asked to share a few comments with you in this Annual Report. Having four children who are graduates of Saint Viator, I know how important this institution is in helping shape careers and prepare young men and women for their future. One of my key tasks this year, in conjunction with new Alumni Relations Manager Krystal Harris ’15, is to tighten the bond between the Board of Trustees and the Alumni Association Board (AAB). As such, I will be attending AAB meetings throughout the year, and that Board’s new Chairperson, Jim Platania ’08, will sit in on Board of Trustee meetings. As the Board of Trustees plans our work for the year, we are focused on four main areas: Mission and Catholic Identity, Governance and Leadership, Academic Excellence, and the long term viability of this great school. Each of these areas provide ample opportunity for input and support from the more than 15,000 graduates of Sacred Heart of Mary and Saint Viator High Schools. We all know that due to COVID-19, this school year will be unlike any other before it. In addition to

4

the impact being felt by current students, many traditional alumni events such as homecoming and reunions have fallen victim to the pandemic. Despite the challenges, it is still incumbent that we all do what we can in ways small or large to support Saint Viator High School and continue to make a Saint Viator education not only of great value, but available to all young men and women who seek it. To all of you who have been involved as volunteers, donors or mentors, thank you for your support. I encourage you to stay connected as I know there are many new programs and opportunities being developed by Krystal, Jim, and others that will be debuting soon. Please take some time to look through the honor roll of donors in this annual report and give fair consideration to how you might make a contribution of your own in the coming year. Thank you and stay well.

Dave Hogaboom Board of Trustees Chair

Letter from the Vice President of Development In the Merriam-Webster dictionary, one definition of the word bold is, “standing out prominently.” For almost sixty years, Saint Viator High School has had a tradition of standing out prominently - in faith, in academics, in leadership, and in athletics. This tradition would not be possible without the support of alumni, current and past parents, and friends of Saint Viator that generously provided financial support for our mission. In 2020, our community has once again been called to act boldly, refusing to compromise on our responsibility to provide academic excellence and faith formation despite the challenges brought on by the COVID-19 pandemic. Our faculty, staff, students, and families have joined together, standing out in numerous ways including:

LETTER FROM THE VICE PRESIDENt of viatorian identity and mission We are a community of learners firmly rooted in Catholic identity and nourished by our Viatorian Spirituality. In our world where a pandemic endures and people from all walks of life feel their voices are not being heard, Saint Viator High School is good news as we lean into our core value of Community and Learning. Together we strive to be a home where an environment of kindness is the norm and all are welcomed, included, and involved. Living what Jesus Christ teaches us through the Gospel is hard work and requires steadfast dedication. Young people are at the center of the Viatorian mission. Venerable Louis Querbes desired for youth to have a lively and enlightened faith despite the wake of societal destruction left by the French Revolution. We continue his steadfast work of providing an environment where people discern who God is calling them to be, to discover what the world needs in order to transform the community. This is happening at Saint Viator with our faculty, staff, students, families, and alumni even though there are challenges in our current times that foster feelings of uncertainty, fear and anxiety. “People ARE bolder when they dream they are doing God’s work!” Being bold doesn’t require that every act be large. There is power and strength in small acts as well. When we stop to listen to a student who is struggling to be heard on their path to self-discovery, when we volunteer our time and talent to assist on a committee that does God’s work for our community, or when we forego a little something for ourselves and donate to make a Saint Viator education more available or more impactful, we are being bold. As graduates of Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary, I hope you see your continued involvement in our community as a means to help those who follow, listen to, understand, and act upon God’s invitation for their lives. Our annual report shines light on the many alumni and donors who have embraced the Mission, Vision, and Values of Saint Viator High School. Looked at individually, we are grateful; looked at collectively, we are inspired. Together we make a difference not only in where this school is at today, but where it will be in the future. Looking back just a year, we could not have imagined what the world would look like today. Looking forward, we can dream of what it will be as we all continue to act boldly, and transform our community in God’s name. Thank you for your generosity and support. May God bless you and keep you well. Adored and loved be Jesus!

Alumni on the Frontlines

SAINT VIATOR

Saint Viator Alumni are Taking On COVID-19 Doctors, nurses, researchers, and medical professionals around the world are on the frontlines battling the COVID-19 pandemic. Saint Viator alumni have been stepping up at work and in their communities and two alumni have recently received attention for their efforts. Dr. Michael Lamberta ’04 is working as an ER doctor at Maimonides Medical Center in Brooklyn and Dr. Christopher Latz ‘06 recently published a study, which aimed to determine if there is an association between blood type and the severity of COVID-19.

Andrew Weber ’12

Not only did the teachers at Saint Viator spark a passion for science in Dr. Lamberta and Dr. Latz, but they

taught them how to care for their fellow human beings and give of themselves to help the greater good.

Jason Kuffel ’99

— Principal Karen Love Dr. Lamberta has been working in the emergency room at the epicenter of the virus outbreak since it was first brought into the country and he recently sent a letter to family and friends about his experience. In the letter, he mentioned how Saint Viator helped shape the way he has approached his work during the COVID-19 crisis and credits his love of science and problem-solving, in part, to his Saint Viator chemistry teacher, Fr. John Van Wiel, CSV. He also noted that his Viatorian education taught him how to treat every patient with compassion despite the relentless admittance of very sick patients and the strain of working in a wartime response environment.

Alumni faculty and staff More than two dozen Saint Viator alumni currently serve on the faculty or staff at the school. During the COVID pandemic, like medical professionals and public safety officials, teachers have been among the frontline workers. We asked some of the current faculty members for their views on what it has been like dealing with the experience and how they have had to adapt their work.

Andrew Weber ’12 I had the opportunity this summer to create a plan/process that allowed our student-athletes and coaches to return to campus for the first time since March 13. When the IHSA announced that we were allowed to have summer camps, our athletic department worked extremely hard to create policies, procedures, and guidelines that would effectively and safely allow camps to occur. Our student-athletes (575) and coaches (120) bought into the concepts outlined to them, and by doing so, we were able to run four weeks of athletic camps. Jason Kuffel ’99 The past several months have certainly brought their challenges to our classrooms, but they’ve also opened the door to innovation. One of the many characteristics about Saint Viator that I believe we excel in is that we prepare our students for success in the future. Even though we didn’t meet in our classrooms the same way last spring, and our current school year has its challenges, our students are learning important adaptability skills that they’ll need as they continue on to college and their professional careers. For the most part, our students have accepted these challenges, and they’re turning this into a positive experience. Whether meeting in class via Zoom or using technology to complete classwork in a unique way, our students are benefitting from the strong educational structure that Saint Viator values. Kurt Paprocki ’00

Chris Paolelli ’02 I’ve been the adviser of the Viator Voice newspaper for the past eleven years, and each year, we’ve celebrated the senior class in May with a massive, elaborately themed Senior Issue, highlighting seniors’ favorite memories, future plans, and of course, votes for Senior Superlatives (Most Likely to... etc.). It winds up being over 70 pages long every year, and the process of creating it is extremely complex; even under normal conditions, it takes months of planning followed by two full weeks of after-school layout, with editing, design, photos, and art by dozens of staff members. Last year, the start of eLearning coincided precisely with the start of Senior Issue season. Thanks to temporary student accounts from Adobe, the editors were able to download and use the design software on their home computers. Thanks to Google Drive, we were able to create a shared drive where everyone could access the various files we needed to create the issue. And of course, thanks to Zoom, we were able to hold real-time virtual layout meetings, which went on for hours but were honestly the most fun and rewarding times I had in two months of eLearning. With some quick work by our longtime printer, Remke Printing, owned by Saint Viator parent, Jim Heck (father of Matt ‘11, Robert ‘12, and Molly ‘15), we managed to get the whole thing delivered in time for the senior car parade on May 8. I was incredibly proud of our editorial staff, headed up by Megan Bosshart ‘20 and Katie McManaman ‘20, for all their hard work. In a year when the seniors were deprived of so many graduation traditions, this is one small thing we were able to keep exactly the same. Chris Paolelli ’02

I think that most teachers would agree that it was a difficult transition to remote learning in the spring. However, by the time we were ready to offer summer courses that were entirely online from the start, it became clear that we could achieve even high levels of learning online when it was planned on our own terms. Students are enjoying the fruits of our labors in converting materials into online modules, as I have been maintaining a paperless classroom this fall.

Not too far away in Boston, as part of the Division of Vascular and Endovascular Surgery at Massachusetts General Hospital, Christopher Latz, MD, MPH has been studying how blood type affects the body’s response to the coronavirus. The study, which was published in July, has been discussed in the New York Times, on CNN, and in other national publications. Though previous studies have speculated that blood type might affect the severity of COVID-19 complications (as defined by intubation or death), Latz’s more recent study found no evidence that blood type affects whether someone develops severe symptoms from a coronavirus infection. The staff at Saint Viator could not be prouder of its alumni, who are putting their education to good work by helping the world fight this novel virus. “At Saint Viator, we educate the whole person,” said Principal Karen Love. “Not only did the teachers at Saint Viator spark a passion for science in Dr. Lamberta and Dr. Latz, but they taught them how to care for their fellow human beings and give of themselves to help the greater good.” If you know a Saint Viator alumni who is working on the frontlines during the coronavirus battle, please share their story by sending an email to alumni@saintviator.com.

Saint Viator AlumNUS Provides Major Assistance in Return to In-person Learning to our business,” O’Neill said. “The work our company has done has been nothing short of remarkable.” O’Neill notes that Würth has ramped up a new division called Würth Essentials specifically for products related to the COVID battle. “With 90 distribution centers across North America, we can move products quickly to meet customer demand.”

Tom O’Neill ’88

With his role of running the North American operations for Würth Group, you might be surprised to find any free time in Tom O’Neill’s schedule under normal circumstances. Add in the need to completely pivot many of the businesses in the North American family of the privately-owned $14B worldwide and $1.3B in North American industrial and consumer products company to find COVID solutions, and you’d be hard-pressed to find anyone who has been busier since March of this year. That makes it all the more remarkable that Tom serves on the executive committee of the Saint Viator Board of Trustees and chairs the enrollment committee. “Würth Group has been involved in PPE production and distribution for several years but over the last six months it has been central

He pointed to an early investment in nitrile gloves, PAPR respirators, and developing an organic hand sanitizer that is 70% purified alcohol so that frequent use does not damage skin, as steps taken in recent months to position the company as an industry leader in the fight against the pandemic. Aside from his role on the Board of Trustees, Tom has a son who is a senior at Saint Viator this year, so he watched with a careful eye as our administration developed strategies for a safe return to in-person learning this fall. With his finger on the pulse of health and safety in business and institutional settings, Tom was among the first to offer assistance to develop a safe Return to Learn plan connecting with Saint Viator President Brian Liedlich and Director of Building and Grounds Stephan Burks to assess the need at the school. “Inventory changes by the day,” O’Neill said. “Products available today might be gone tomorrow.” As an initial step, O’Neill delivered 10,000 gloves to the school in just two days.

Orders for sanitizer and other products followed quickly and consistently. “Tom’s commitment to keeping our community safe has been instrumental in our ability to open school this fall,” said Liedlich. “He has acted boldly and reliably to help us through something we have never encountered before.” For his part, O’Neill said “It makes me feel very proud and honored to be a part of the Saint Viator community. As a parent, I am very comfortable to send my son there every day because of the safety plan they have put in place.” He also praised the work of new school nurse, Pamela Kelly. “Saint Viator took the precautions; they did the due diligence and made investments to protect kids and teachers. I am humbled to be a part of that institution.” In recent weeks, the latest product from the Würth Group has found its way to Saint Viator. New sanistations have been placed at the primary entrances to the school allowing everyone who arrives a clean and easy means of sanitizing hands as they enter. The stations are branded specifically for Saint Viator. “We want to make a movement to help institutions to protect employees,” said O’Neill. Thanks to the generosity of great alumni like Tom O’Neill, our community is in good (sanitized) hands.

letter from the saint viator and sacred heart of mary Alumni Association Board

Life as a Lion does not end when you graduate; the Alumni Association Board strives to help you grow, dream, and be instruments of change as alumni. There is nothing like the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary community. We are so excited to work together this year, all nineteen of us alumni and parents who make up the Alumni Association Board. We all share a deep appreciation for the values and principles we learned during our time at Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary, and the lifelong friendships and networks we have because of these incredible places. Our goal as the Alumni Association Board is to connect and bring alumni together to further support the mission, vision, and values of Saint Viator High School. While COVID-19 has drastically changed our annual event schedule, we continue to be creative in shifting events virtually for the time being while still maintaining our beloved traditions. We hope you continue to support Saint Viator during this time of uncertainty; though we are certain Saint Viator will continue to produce well-rounded, socially-conscious, and faith-driven alumni. We look to you, alumni, to mentor current students, provide job opportunities, and to volunteer to serve on various boards and committees that allow Saint Viator to grow and remain viable in a constantly changing educational environment. It’s also incumbent on us to provide enjoyable opportunities for alumni to get together and stay connected. Whether you would like to attend an event, volunteer, or donate, feel free to reach out to any member on the Alumni Association Board for the many ways you can give back to the school that created so many special memories for you. Go Lions!

Stay Connected with AlumniConnect

On November 9, the Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary Alumni Association will launch AlumniConnect, a new digital platform that will allow alumni to connect with one another and with the school. “In recent surveys, alumni have expressed an interest in ways to help them stay connected to one another and find professional networking opportunities,” said Alumni Relations Manager Krystal Harris ‘15. “We’ve heard alumni and have responded with AlumniConnect.” The new tool will allow alumni to post resumes and jobs, find and network with other alumni, form social or professional communities, find or become a mentor, and even hire other Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary alumni. The launch of the Loyal Hearts Business Forum drew great interest from alumni and produced great professional networking opportunities. Harris believes that AlumniConnect will expand on that start. “While our Business Forum meetings are a great opportunity to periodically meet people faceto-face, AlumniConnect will allow real-time connections and allow alumni across the country to participate.” In fact, AlumniConnect will have a map that shows where alumni are located across the globe so if someone is looking for work in another state, they can find alumni in that region to reach out to. “The COVID-19 pandemic has had a significant impact on employment opportunities for not only young people but those well into their careers as well,” said Tom Ramsden, Vice President of Development for Saint Viator. “This is a time that calls for bold action in many ways and we think that a tool like AlumniConnect will be a big step forward in helping alumni.” Starting on November 9, alumni of both Saint Viator and Sacred Heart of Mary high schools can register for AlumniConnect at alumniconnect.saintviator.com.

Share Your Experience with New College & Career Connection Saint Viator’s new College & Career Connection serves as a resource for current students to learn more about prospective colleges from alumni who attended that school. In this new program, alumni can register online, noting where they received their degree, both undergraduate and graduate or professional, and those entries are stored in a database that can be accessed by Saint Viator College Counselor Amy Herbert. If a current student would like to know more about a school they are considering, Herbert can provide them with the contact information of one or more alumni who attended that school. “It’s a great way for students to learn more about a school than they might discover on a traditional campus visit,” Herbert said. “It should help answer questions families have about the environment not only on a campus, but perhaps in a particular area of study.” To be a part of the College & Career Connection, simply register at bit.ly/3my5zFi. 17

saint viator counseling center

As we look to evolve and innovate in our classrooms, this past summer brought construction of a new space for the school’s Counseling Department. The expanded space features sound-proof offices for each counselor, a dedicated conference room for departmental meetings, expanded space for visiting college reps, and an attractive waiting area for guests. The improved office space for the counselors allows the department to better attend to the academic as well as the emotional and personal issues students face. “Our department aims to meet the academic, social, emotional, and career and college preparation needs of our students,” said Stephanie Spiewak ’02, Saint Viator’s counseling department chair. “This new space will allow us to better serve our students in a variety of ways.” The construction work was able to commence this summer thanks to a generous gift from an anonymous donor which kicked off an on-going fundraising effort. “Funding the Counseling space is one of our primary goals for this year,” said Vice President of Development, Tom Ramsden. “So many students have been helped in numerous ways over the years, so we hope that those graduates and their families will see this as a meaningful way to give back to Saint Viator.” “We are so grateful for the generosity of this individual and all those in the Saint Viator family who have helped us begin this process,” said Spiewak. “It allows us to continue to build on the foundation of our department and create supportive programs for students.”
