KP Aesthetics Speaks on : Summer Body As the days get lighter and the sun starts to shine, we all know what is fast approaching - wedding season! Following the pandemic, many brides have literally waited years for their big day and so the union between two loving people can feel more important than ever in 2022. Of course, the most important topic of the day is the love you have for each other but its all eyes on the bride and we want to share with you some of Cheshire’s secrets of achieving your dream body for your dream day. So, if your big day is within the next 12-18 months and you want to discover how to lose stubborn body fat, reduce the appearance of cellulite and firm up loose skin, look no further. We spoke to the founder of KP Aesthetics in Hale, Khatra Paterson, who gave us her tips on how you can achieve body confidence!

If we reduce weight by only 5%, we can see dramatic improvements in health outcomes. With the use of weight loss medication and in conjunction with diet and exercise, Khatra and her team can help you to lose weight and develop healthier habits that not only give you a confidence boost but improve your overall health and wellness. For someone who aims to lose 3-4 stone or more, Khatra notes that they should be looking into starting the National Medical Weight Loss Program 12 months prior to your big day to ensure safe and sustainable weight loss. Treatment time: 4 weeks Treatment cost: £350

Khatra notes that different goals have different time frames, so it’s important to begin your treatment journey with a medical consultation to ensure that not only is your medical history assessed for suitability of treatments but that the recommended treatment plan will have the maximum impact. If you have a weight loss goal… Embarking on a weight loss journey can be daunting, scary and often result in a yo-yo effect through the lack of education and support. Ultimately, the science behind weight loss comes down to being in a calorie deficit, however it is important to adopt a sensible and sustainable approach. KP Aesthetics has partnered up with the National Medical Weight Loss Programme and local personal trainers to support patients that have a BMI of 30 and above to lose weight. Being overweight not only impacts a person's self esteem and confidence but it can also be a result of many complex issues and ultimately it can have devastating effects on your health; increase risk of cardiovascular disease, diabetes, high blood pressure, cancer and many other health issues.

If you have stubborn body fat… Khatra mentions that KP Aesthetics aim to offer a variety of non-invasive treatments that can address a patient's concerns and has noticed a significant rise in people looking at alternative options to fat loss surgery such as liposuction. Whilst natural fat loss is always recommended, we often find stubborn areas of body fat that need an extra helping hand and this is where cryolipolysis (fat freezing to you and me!) comes in handy. KP Aesthetics are the only medical aesthetic clinic in the North of England who offer the treatment with Deleo’s leading technology; Cristal Pro.

No two patients are exactly alike and this is why a onesize-fits-all treatment plan is no longer suitable; however, you can leave all limitations behind and discover an unparalleled level of personalisation, with this body sculpting treatment.

Treatment Time: 60 mins Prices start from:£180

This innovative body contouring technique allows you to find a harmonious body thanks to the cryolipolysis technique. This technology treats localised fat deposits in a non-invasive manner and without anesthesia to reduce unsightly fat rolls by up to 30%! Victoria Worthington, a medical aesthetician at KP specialises in Deleo’s medical cryolipolysis device (Cristal Pro), a device that reaches sub-zero temperatures to effectively and definitely destroy fat. Nowadays, people don’t have time for long recovery, which is why Khatra notes that non-invasive procedures are becoming more popular. “Rather than liposuction, I am seeing a lot more people interested in non-invasive procedures. They offer little to no downtime, minimal risk and optimum results.” Khatra’s choice of introducing Cristal Pro to KP Aesthetics was not only due to it’s proven results but the fact you can treat up to 4 areas during one treatment session, from your chin to your thighs; all of your problem areas can be targeted with this technology.

Treatment Time: 60 mins Prices start from: £300

If you’re wanting to reduce the appearance of cellulite…. Let’s face it, we all have it but not many of us have learned to embrace it yet. At KP Aesthetics, Khatra explains that it’s important to have a holistic approach to treatments, supporting their patients in achieving their desired results through both daily care they can do from home and enhancing their natural beauty through treatments in clinic.

If you’re aiming for a toned physique… The instagram-ready toned abs are surprisingly not as unattainable as you think. Introducing the Contour Master,, a non-invasive body contouring solution clinically proven to increase muscle and decrease fat. This revolutionary technology can be used to target stomach, buttocks, arms and legs strengthening and toning our problem areas. This treatment is a safe and non-surgical solution to attaining your body goals. Focused electromagnetic field passes through all skin and fat in order to effectively stimulate the muscle, providing the most intensive continuous contractions which is ideal for muscle growth. The contractions also trigger the release of free fatty acids which break down localised fat deposits via cell apoptosis. Khatra supports the treatment studies that indicate that one to two months after HI-EMT treatments, average muscle mass is increased by 18% and localised fat is reduced by 21%.

Treatment Time: 30 mins Prices start from: £250

NuEra® Tight with FocalRF® Technology uses non invasive radio frequency to improve the collagen structures within the skin as well as improving the elasticity and the overall appearance of the skin.

Yes, the invitation arrives and it’s time to plan your outfit. But suddenly, you realise that guest fashion is a nightmare. I mean, can you wear black? Or white? How short is too short? Is cleavage acceptable? And that’s just the men… kidding. In fact, the male dress code for weddings is as much a minefield as it is for women. Firstly, you need to know just how formal the wedding is, most invitations will tell you if it's black tie, or white tie or whether it’s lounge suits. Black tie is generally formal or semi-formal wear, white tie is the most formal look of all and will probably only be required if you’ve been invited to a royal wedding. If this is required, then you MUST adhere to the dress code. Same with women. If a wedding is formal, you must think elegance, not fashion. However, most weddings just need you to be your best self. DO ramp up your personal style, DON’T think you need to look a certain way. I mean, if you look ridiculous in a hat or fascinator, don’t think you have to wear one (unless it’s rules). Men, yes. You can wear trainers with a suit if it’s informal attire and definitely be bold with colour. It looks great in the photos.

Skin Deep Medispa at FIXX Salons, Altrincham. Natasha Filippidi invited me along for a microneedling treatment. So, let’s go… Microneedling is a minimally invasive skin rejuvenation treatment, which can be used on both the face and body. It can help people of all ages and all skin types and can help with many issues, including: lines and wrinkles; acne scarring; trauma, surgical scars and marks; pigmentation disorders; sagging skin and double chin; stretch marks and cellulite; and hair loss. BEFORE

TRIED&TESTED

m.pen [pro] ultimate microneedling by mesoestetic

AFTER

I opted for the face, to help with lines and wrinkles and generally improve hydration and the appearance of my complexion. The treatment involves a handheld device (m.pen [pro], which is applied to the surface of the skin. The micropunctures penetrate down to the dermal layers (the layers where collagens and elastins are formed) and activate the release of growth factors and stimulate the wound healing process to produce new collagen. The injectable solution is bespoke; tailored to your personal skin concerns and what you are wanting to achieve. Your practitioner will complete a consultation beforehand and a treatment plan will then be put in place.

AFTER

I’m quite squeamish, but I have to say that the treatment was relatively pain free, maybe a little tender on the forehead but not uncomfortable. I did have some redness, so I would advise having the treatment when you’re not going anywhere afterwards. I left with a lovely hydrated and glowing complexion, so I’ll be back to book a course of treatments.

What do you buy a father who has everything?

Brown Bear’s Expert Wedding Advice

We chat to Gina Brown who co-owns Brown Bear Events with sister Charlene, to discuss all things weddings and events, with some handy advice thrown in Why did you decide to get into the industry? We have both been very passionate and interested in the events industry since a young age and after both studying event management at university, we knew it was a route we wanted to follow. We’ve always loved being organised, socialising and seeing the smile on people’s faces when we create events for them! What’s your favourite part of planning a wedding? Working alongside and getting to know unique clients, all with a different creative vision and with new exciting challenges to face and overcome. Each event is a new personal story and our role is to turn their fantasy into reality for their special day. And the most challenging? One of the most challenging elements we find is when clients are unsure of their budget. In events, it’s very much how long is a piece of string. We eliminate this by initially providing a shopping list of bespoke, styled items for the couple to review, allowing them to choose the most suitable options for them. What are the bride/groom’s biggest concerns or worries? As always, budget, but with our expertise, we’re by their side to advise where to cut corners and which elements are key. However, sometimes it’s the little things, like table plans, that really stress clients out. They’re concerned with who they are upsetting whilst seating people on certain tables, when a lot of the time this isn’t the case! Who are your typical clients? A complete mixture to be honest. We like to be approachable and affordable to all. That’s why we offer three packages: full planning,

18 / THEGLOSSYMAGAZINE.COM

part planning and on-the-day assistance only, which we feel gives everyone a good opportunity to work with us. What’s the craziest thing you’ve seen at a wedding? A Sangeet during an Indian wedding. It’s always magical to see how much effort and creativity family and friends go to when performing for the bride and groom. What makes Brown Bear Events different to other planners? We pride ourselves on a very personal and bespoke experience and are honoured to be part of a couples’ special day. We work around the clock to ensure all elements are delivered exactly as they’re expected. We ensure that the same Brown Bear team member is by their side and the main point of contact throughout the entire experience, from planning to execution, which makes clients feel at ease, giving them a familiar face from start to finish. Through this, we’ve built many long-lasting friendships with our brides and grooms. When it comes to the actual wedding day, we feel part of the family and are as excited as everyone else to see their vision come to life. What are some wedding trends for 2022? Since the dreaded Covid, when there was very little celebrating, we have found a lot of people requesting a more social party style of celebration, rather than a formal sit-down meal. Multiple day celebrations are giving guests opportunities to dust off those dancing shoes and destination weddings are making up for all of those missed travelling moments! Since everyone is finally seeing the back of most Covid restrictions, everyone has a much more positive attitude and outlook on life, which is reflected in their events. Essentially, guests are ready to party... so, 2022, here we come!

ADVERTORIAL

ADVERTORIAL Why hire a wedding planner? Of course, the exciting time arrives when you start to envisage your special day and it is full steam ahead with planning mode. The Pinterest and Instagram addictions start. A lot of brides and grooms like to plan and organise the majority of the wedding themselves, but never consider who will take over and bring it all to life on the day. The reality is that hiring a wedding planner doesn’t necessarily mean bringing someone in to take over your special day. Our role is to work alongside you and use our years of expertise within the industry to bring your vision to life. Advise what does/doesn’t work best, negotiate with suppliers, turn that fantasy into reality and be there throughout the entire process. Hiring a wedding planner isn’t an added expense, it is a special bond that creates a personal, bespoke and stress-free day for you all! Where to start Start as you mean to go on, get excited and get organised! Start an Excel document that includes all of your initial ideas, this will help you keep track and make the entire process feel less overwhelming. Essentially, it is a ‘base’ that enables all the information you collate to be reviewed in one document. It also allows you to start forming a rough estimate of costs and helps ensure you stick within your assigned budget. It goes without saying that the earlier you get planning, the better. Whether it is the venue, florist, band, photographer or makeup artist – the list goes on – everyone gets booked up well in advance, so being ahead of the game broadens your options and means you won’t be left disappointed.

Budget cutting The wedding cost reality has hit and the panic sets in as you realise you need to cut costs. Don’t worry, you are not on your own. No matter what the budget, every bride and groom come to this stage. Try and create a rough, overall idea of the associated costs before you have committed and contracted with suppliers, as most will come with a cancellation clause. Relook at the f iner detail of each element, exactly what is included and what can be utilised elsewhere to eliminate other costs. Consider using highquality, artificial florals and props rather than all fresh flowers and potentially focus on a couple of statement pieces, which could end up being more effective than cheaper table centres. Save costs by getting creative, for example, replace handmade invitations with bespoke digital invitations and make your own wedding favours, stationary and wedding cake to give that personal touch. Finally, ask a wedding planner, they are there to help! Are wedding planners expensive? Wedding planners don’t need to be expensive and can play a vital role on your day. Make sure you are clear from the onset about where you’ll need support, as this will determine and justify the amount of time that will need to be spent, the type of package most suitable for you and the associated fees. Never rule out the option of a wedding planner, there is a solution for everyone and never be scared to ask!

Things to consider when choosing a venue Whether it is a destination wedding or local wedding you have in mind; always consider the time of year and climate you would

ideally prefer. Unfortunately, wherever you decide to host your wedding, the weather is one of those underlying elements that is out of everyone’s control and can affect your special day if not contemplated. Always ensure the venue can offer a contingency plan, which can be utilised as a last resort.

RIVER WALKS Something most humans have in common is the craving to be near water whenever we feel the need for rest and relaxation. It’s no coincidence that so many retirement communities are near the coast – but for those of us that don’t have the luxury of retiring just yet, there are still plenty of opportunities to get our fix of peace and tranquillity close to home. From popular riverbank walks right under our noses in the suburbs, to remote and hidden waterside spots way out in the sticks, here are my top five recommended destinations for enjoying fresh air with the sound of babbling water. And best of all, if you’re following the course of a river, you don’t need a map.

lovely petting farm, where kids can interact with rabbits, goats and even alpacas for just the cost of a donation to the charity. These animals live on an idyllic bend in the river that’s also popular with wild swimmers, because the gently running water is quite deep in places but well shaded and crystal clear.

1. Fletcher Moss and the Mersey. Starting close to home – in fact, right in the heart of Didsbury, it’s sometimes easy to forget that there are miles and miles of riverside walks, where the dog can run off the lead and you can completely forget the proximity of the city. All you have to do is walk into Fletcher Moss Park, keep going until you reach the banks of the Mersey, then turn right for a long snake through Didsbury towards Chorlton Water Park.

3. Millers Dale and the Wye. A bit further afield, deep in the Peak District between Buxton and Bakewell, lies the beautiful village of Millers Dale. You can park there and eat at the popular Anglers Rest pub, then follow the Monsal Trail along the Wye, heading east towards Cressbrook Mill with no sound except the water running over pebbles.

2. The Garden House, Marple. On the banks of the River Goyt and next to Roman Lakes Country Park, there’s a

also set your destination for the famous outdoor swimming pool in Hathersage to complete your water fix. This familyfriendly lido is open all year round, heated to a comfortable temperature and surrounded by some of the most glorious scenery (not to mention some of the best outdoor equipment shops) in the North of England. 5. Macc Forest Reservoirs. Macclesfield is surrounded by reservoirs with pretty paths for less strenuous walks. There’s a particularly nice cluster around Langley, where the Leather’s Smithy pub is surrounded by Ridgegate, Bottoms, Trentabank and Teggsnose reservoirs in very close walking distance. Keep dogs on leads as there’s sheep about.

4. Hope to Hathersage. If you walk along the Derwent Valley Heritage Way, you can not only enjoy the famous Hope Valley via an alternative route to the A-road that runs along it, but you can

What Everybody Ought To Know About Writing A Will And Drafting A Lasting Power Of Attorney Gareth Morgan, head of Private Client at Blackstone Solicitors, discusses the many facets of his role and how his team can help you. Gareth, a Former English Teacher in South Korea, began his journey in law 12 years ago. Following a short spell working in the Employment Law field, Gareth has predominantly practiced as a Private Client Solicitor. In summer 2021, he joined the renowned Legal 500 firm Blackstone Solicitors, based in the village of Hale, Cheshire, as the Head of Private Client. We asked Gareth to answer some of the more frequently asked questions faced by a Private Client Solicitor and give us an insight into his area of law. What does a private client solicitor do? A Private Client Solicitor Deals with the discussion and drafting of Wills, Lasting Powers of Attorney and Trusts and helps to administer the estate of a person that has passed away. Private Client Law is becoming an increasingly prevalent area of law, as individuals seek to preserve, grow and pass on their assets, whilst minimising tax liabilities. Estate planning is vital for any individual who wishes to get the most from their estate and protect it from issues such as Tax and care home fees in order to ensure their loved ones and their respective inheritance is safeguarded as much as possible. Issues dealt with by Private Client solicitors are becoming more and more contentious. Many of these contentious issues could be avoided by seeking a solicitor’s advice and with careful drafting of legal documents to minimise or eradicate these potential issues. Why is a Will important? It is important for you to make a Will, whether or not you consider you have many possessions or much money. 61% of people in the UK still do not have a valid Will. That equates to approximately 30 million people. This is amazing when you consider the issues which can be avoided for your loved ones by this oftensimple document. The problem is that many people often don’t see a Will as something that

is necessary. Unfortunately, these people leave things too late, and this can cause serious problems for their family and loved ones following their deaths. These are some common issues which I find many clients are unaware of :● When a person dies without a Will, certain rules known as ‘the rules of intestacy’ apply which dictate how much money, property and possessions should be allocated. This may not be how you had intended your estate to be divided or to whom it is distributed. ● Unmarried partners and unregistered civil partners cannot inherit from each other without a valid Will (There is no such thing as a Common Law husband or Wife!) ● Wills can be used to arrange who will care for your minor children should both parents die. ● Also, a Will is revoked by marriage or civil partnership. It is particularly advised to use a solicitor to draft your Will where you share property with somebody other than a spouse or civil partner; where you wish to make provision for a dependant who cannot care for themselves; where there is a high probability of somebody contesting your Will; you own property overseas or there is a business involved.

Can my Will be contested following my death? I often encounter clients who have either forgotten to complete a Will or their Will is contested by friends, family or others who believe they are entitled to some or all of the deceased party’s estate. Even the rich and famous have sometimes had their Wills disputed Below is a list of 4 of the most famous Will disputes to have occurred in the past few decades. ● Martin Luther King Jr It is well documented that Martin Luther King Jr’s children have not always seen eye to eye. The executor of Mr King’s Will was Dexter King, one of his sons, and the Will was challenged by two more of his children who accused Dexter of wrongfully appropriating from their father’s estate. Dexter refused to show the two challengers financial records and other documents that divulged in-depth detail of the estate’s operations. The family again fell out over a dispute surrounding Martin Luther King Jr’s travelling Bible and his Nobel Peace Prize medal. The argument here was between two of his sons and his daughter who claimed to have been left the two assets. A court ruled that this wasn’t the case and a settlement was agreed, details of which have remained confidential.

● Jimi Hendrix The Guitar Legend is a perfect example of why you need to make a Will specifying what you want to happen to your estate in the event of your death. When Jimi Hendrix died in 1970 he left behind an estate valued at approximately $80 million. Unfortunately, he hadn’t made a Will and this pitted his half-brother against his adopted sister for control of his assets and his estate. Initially, a lawyer had control over Hendrix’s estate until 1995, when his father gained the rights to his son’s music and a large part of his estate. When his father passed away, Jimi’s father left most of the estate to his daughter and Jimi’s adopted sister Janie. Jimi’s half-brother was not written into Jimi’s father’s Will, and as a result, Jimi’s half-brother contested the Will, suggesting that Janie had manipulated her father into excluding him from the Will. In the end, The Superior Court in America upheld Jimi’s father’s Will and his half-brother remained excluded. ● Nina Wang Nina Wang was Asia’s richest woman with a reported fortune of £7.1 billion. After her death, her partner Peter Chan made a claim that he should inherit her estate along with all of its financial assets. Unfortunately for Mr Chan, his claim was refuted and her full estate went to charity after she died of cancer in 2007. In another twist, Mr Chan was later sentenced to 12 years in prison after it was discovered he had tried to forge Nina Wang’s Will. ● James Brown James Brown is the second musical icon on this list. He left behind an estate worth $100 million after he died in 2006. His Will stated that his estate was to be separated into two trusts, one for the education of his grandchildren, and the second for the disadvantaged youths of South Carolina and Georgia. Brown clearly stated in his Will that he hadn’t mistakenly left anyone out of the Will. Despite this, his wife and children contested the Will in 2009 and were awarded $50 million. What is a Lasting Power of Attorney? A Lasting Power of Attorney (LPA) is a legal document which allows you to appoint somebody (The Attorney) to deal with matters on your behalf. There are two types of LPA, a Financial Decisions LPA which deals with your finances and property decisions, such as selling your house or managing your bank accounts and other investments. There is also an LPA for

Health and Care Decisions, which deals with making medical decisions and liaising with local authorities and social services, care homes when issues arise and ultimately, it enables the Attorney to make life sustaining decisions. You must have sufficient mental capacity to be able to instruct a solicitor to draft a power of attorney. Where a person lacks capacity, the options become more technical, expensive and limited and must be referred to the Court of Protection. This situation can be avoided for your family and loved ones by ensuring you have an LPA in place. The tragic case of Kate Garraway The heart-breaking impact of the coronavirus pandemic has been publicly apparent for journalist and TV presenter, Kate Garraway, whose husband Derek was diagnosed with covid-19 in March 2020 and still needs round-the-clock medical care at the time of writing. During an already stressful time, Kate has had to juggle the needs of her family with managing their finances. This was made more difficult as Derek was often the named person on the bills, investments, bank, and insurance policies. Without a lasting power of attorney (LPA) it has been extremely complicated for Kate to sort out financial matters and, in fact, it is impossible to access investments in someone’s sole name without it. If an LPA for property and finances is not in place, it is possible to apply to the Court of Protection to be appointed as a deputy. However, this is a much more expensive and lengthy process. It also requires the vulnerable person to have lost their ability to make decisions for themselves.

An LPA can be considered to be similar to an insurance policy. Whilst we all hope an LPA will never be required, should the worst happen, your loved ones will have the necessary authority to deal with your finances and make decisions about the care you should receive. Why instruct a Solicitor to deal with Probate matters? Probate is the area of law which I find is most challenging to many clients. They are often still grieving for the loss of a loved one and have not appreciated the volume of work that is often necessary to deal with following a death. This can feel incredibly daunting during an already difficult time. An experienced Private Client Solicitor can take away that pressure and assist with obtaining the Grant of Probate or Letters of Administration, liaise with various asset holders such as banks and other financial institutes and complete the relevant forms to deal with any tax implications and ensure any wishes in a Will or intestacy are carried out correctly. The Private Client Solicitor will also speak with other departments within the firm to ensure that issues such as property transfers are carried out and ensuring the process is administered as efficiently and cost-effectively as possible.

Blackstone Solicitors has been successfully advising its clients for over 10 years. The firm is expanding and is very experienced in a number of areas of law.

In Derek’s case, this test for mental capacity was borderline because he is still being assessed to understand the effect covid-19 has had on his cognitive health. Without a health and welfare LPA, Kate did not have a legal right to access Derek’s medical notes due to data protection. Only in exceptional circumstances will a deputyship for health and welfare be granted by the Court.

Lund Bennett – divorce without the drama When you’re entering one of the most daunting periods of your life, you really do want someone like Kirsten Bennett by your side 24 / THEGLOSSYMAGAZINE.COM

ADVERTORIAL Co-founder of family law firm Lund Bennett, Kirsten's approach – filled with compassion, positivity and empathy – is only rivalled by her and her team’s legal expertise. The Altrincham-based firm was established in 2012 and offers a bespoke and namenot-a-number service to those needing legal representation in matters such as divorce and children’s law. A year on from our f irst meeting, we caught up with Kirsten to talk about latest developments within the firm and the advent of the new no-fault divorce and its positive impact on matrimonial proceedings. Great to see you in person and not on a screen, Kirsten! What changes have happened within the firm since we last spoke? We are extremely pleased to have had Hollie Aspinall join us in April of this year. She is a great young solicitor who specialises in matrimonial finance and is a fluent Welsh speaker. This is such a huge bonus, as we support and represent people f rom all across the UK. The rise of the video call during the pandemic means most people are now comfortable with remote meetings, which makes it easier for us to act for people who aren’t living on our doorstep. What makes a good family solicitor? Knowledge of the law is a must, but c o n f i d e n c e , p r e s e n t i n g we l l a n d a p p re c i ating that family law is as much of an art as a science are extremely important too, as is being able to balance empathy with professional and effective advice to best serve our clients. At Lund Bennett, we are great communicators, we know how to listen and react a p p ro p ri ately. Clients are individuals and we will put them at ease by being relatable and human but also professional and effective. Being a family lawyer can be quite a feat of personality, where the practitioner can be confidante and advisor but also needs to be strong and self-assured. Sometimes, a client needs to be told something they don’t want to hear.

Almost all our work comes from personal recommendation, so our clients undoubtedly value our approach. What’s keeping the team busy at the moment? No-fault divorces – known officially as The Divorce, Separation and Dissolution Act 2020 – are definitely keeping us busy. They came into being in April and have changed the face of divorce proceedings entirely. Tell us more... Under the old regime, you had to rely on one of f ive facts. The f irst two were unreasonable behaviour and adultery – both fault-based and required one spouse to make accusations about the other’s conduct in order to demonstrate that the marriage had broken down. The third and fourth were two years’ separation with the other person’s consent or five without the other person’s consent. The fifth, final and extremely rare factor was desertion. Now, all you need to do is show that your marriage has irretrievably broken down. No consent is needed. What are the overriding benefits of the new law? It can fundamentally improve the tone at the outset of proceedings. Couples are no longer required to be critical or readdress old wounds, which should in turn help ‘control the temperature’ and minimise emotional charge. This leaves couples the space to focus on other issues, such as f inances and children. It removes the ‘blame game’ and it too avoids the ‘one party refusing consent’ scenario, which always had the potential to leave somebody locked in an unhappy marriage if a judge ruled they could not adequately prove their case. Yes, there’s still an element of trepidation, but with no allegations having to be made, it’s certainly less scary. It’s certainly helping people who might have otherwise opted not to make the initial move towards divorce – put off by the requirement of identifying fault and fearful of their partner’s reactions to it.

Divorce is always pitched as something that has to be fraught with drama (there’s even a TV show The Split dedicated to it!), so client apprehension must be high? It is, but we are here at Lund Bennett to put people’s minds at rest. Divorce doesn't have to mean a fight. We guide them through the process and help them with the legalities of it all, putting everything into layman’s terms. We show them that it doesn’t have to end up in court. There are lots of ways to resolve disputes without going to court – round table meetings, mediation and even private court hearings. A private court hearing is where a paid barrister sits as judge and gives an indication of what the outcome may be if the matter proceeds to a contested hearing or a trial. This indication is intended to oil the wheels of settlement and to help the parties reach an agreement, thus avoiding expensive, both emotionally and financially, court proceedings. One of your other specialisms is dealing with missing persons cases. Tell us how your gentle-yet-expert touch can help clients at one of the most difficult times in their lives? Luckily, the law changed in 2013 and the process of obtaining a certif icate of presumed death was simplified. The old process was extremely convoluted and was, in essence, a mixture of common law (judge-made law) and statute. It was often the case that a person could be declared dead in one court but not the other. The change in the law was very welcome. I regularly act for clients who are still coming to terms with the disappearance of a loved one and help guide them through the process, address unanswered questions and, ultimately, obtain the certificate, which allows them, for example, to deal with their loved one's financial affairs. I try to lessen the upset and pain during what is an unimaginably distressing time.

formed in 2014 and the showroom opened its doors one year later. All profits go to the artists An incredible 100% of the profits are ploughed back into a 550-strong (and growing) workforce in Africa. “I didn’t just want to send people a cheque,” explains Ian, “that’s not sustainable. This is. We’ve supported the creation of a school in Nairobi, built workshops, bought safety and welding equipment, and constructed toilet facilities.” To date, over $1million has been put back into the artists’ communities and the turnover so far is in excess of $5million. During the pandemic, Ian told his workforce to carry on with production and that Pangea would keep buying. Yes, he now has a few extra animals in storage, but most important to him is that his African team were kept busy and didn’t struggle. He even financed the construction of a

new workshop extension during this tumultuous period. “The goal was never to make money. I’m in a fortunate position” says Ian. A sight to behold The Pangea team is small but mighty. The seven of them share their space with a magnificent metal menagerie housing everything from crocodiles and fighting bulls to lions and monkeys. As well as animals, there are flowers too and also the ‘Superheroes’ range made from old car parts (an 8ft-tall Optimus Prime Transformer, anyone?). There too are exquisite figurines made from stone sourced high on Mount Nyangani, miles away from the artists’ homes. They camp out for weeks, chiselling daily to bring back what can be up to a tonne of stone. The figures themselves can then take up to a year to create. In total, there are over 400 design lines available – all handmade – and with over 3,000 items stocked in the Ormskirk warehouse, you’ll never wait long for your product to be delivered. If any showroom was made for Instagram, it’s this one. The team even allows little ones to sit atop the life-size beasts and have a photo taken. The prices are wonderful too – there's a Pangea piece to suit every budget; from £30 up to £20,000.

The most popular? “Definitely the 6ft giraffe,” says Ian, “it looks great in the corner of a room or on the patio. A fantastic talking point when guests visit, for sure!” The biggest? “We do bespoke pieces and Amazon requested a 17ft x 8ft bull. Our artists created it and it just about fitted into a 40ft container!” You can hire the sculptures out too; think weddings, birthdays and anniversaries. Again, the prices are competitive and will make any special event truly unforgettable. Future plans Ian really has created something wonderful with Pangea Sculptures. Operations in Nairobi in Kenya and Harare in Zimbabwe are growing. Over 25 workshops are currently creating works exclusively for the company. You can read the biographies of the artists on the Pangea website, many of whom come from a long line of sculptors. It’s a rich heritage that we are now lucky enough to have access too. “Our next step is wholesale, selling smaller pieces direct to retailers,” reveals Ian, “and then, later this year, we will be launching global worldwide distribution. So, for example, a New Yorker can order a life-size elephant – online or by speaking with one

of the team – and have it delivered to their doorstep!" Make a visit to Pangea There has never been a better time to visit the showroom. “The team recently launched Pangea African Aid,” reveals Ian. “We are asking visitors to bring in their new and old clothes, iPhones, laptops... anything but money... and we are shipping them direct to African communities in need.” These communities are evidently extremely close to Ian’s heart. On his last visit, he arranged a gathering of every single artist, support worker and some of their families. He and Sales Executive Mark Moss ordered a KFC meal for every attendee – 670 in total. Ian also hired a photographer, so that he could capture images of him with each and every person. “Some of the kids had never even seen a can of coke,” says Ian. “We hugged, shook hands, it was such a memorable day. It summed up our ethos: work hard, have fun, help others.” To think that all this generosity, beauty and wonder came f rom one single trip to Africa to visit an uncle: “He passed away a couple of years ago,” Ian tells us, “but he got to see what I was doing and he was really proud of what I’ve achieved.”

Didsbury opens its gardens for charity Sunday 19th June sees the welcome return of the popular community event Didsbury Open Gardens. Over twenty gardens, private and public, will open to visitors from 11.30am to 5.30pm. All of the proceeds from programme sales and teas and cakes will go to local charities, with the main charity being St Ann’s Hospice. Tickets/programmes, which allow entry to all of the gardens, are just £5 and will be on sale from early May at the Cheese Hamlet in Didsbury Village and at Fusion Deli on Lapwing Lane.

Besides showing their gardens at their best, some hosts will be displaying art works as part of the Arts Trail and will offer refreshments too. There might even be live music and a teddy bear’s picnic! Over the past twelve years, this bi-annual event has become a much-loved landmark of early summer and, thanks to the support of thousands of local people, has raised over £100,000 for charity. An event not to be missed!

Getting your rocks off has never proved so embarrassing When my well-meaning neighbour, Sebastian, invited me to his beginner's art class up in the pueblo (village) I thought, why not I mean, yes, I have zero talent. Yes, I was thrown out of art class at school. And yes, I am much happier working down in my veggie plot. But, deep down, I felt maybe it was high time I proved my old art teacher, Mr Taylor, wrong. Plus, I’d heard there would be cake. Hopefully, to scoff rather than draw. So, the following Friday evening, resplendent in my rather fetching new white smock, I found myself settling into my seat in the community hall, excited about creating

my masterpiece. But whilst my fellow artists began to paint with ease the beautiful terracotta urn overflowing with trailing red geraniums, before us, after just one hour, my canvas looked more like a crime scene from a slasher movie. Feeling rather downhearted, my Spanish art teacher, who, thankfully, seemed far kinder than grumpy old Mr T ever was, took pity on me and suggested I spend the second hour of the class having a go at writing inspirational words on some of her collection of large painted rocks. Cool, I thought. I do love me a good quote. Plus, I didn’t want my smock to go to waste. Which is how Lord Muck and I found ourselves, a week later, wandering along Cabopino Beach in Marbella – a big, beautiful bay backed by stunning sand dunes. Me hunting for rocks for my next art class. His Lordship resigned to carrying my increasingly heavy bag, muttering under his breath. Both of us utterly unaware that an extremely compromising position

loomed large on the horizon. You see, I’d spotted a pile of good-looking rocks up on the high tide line, right next to the grass-lined dunes, so off I marched, head down, eyes scouring the sand beneath me, intent on f inding stone canvases for my long-winded quotes. In the distance, distorted by the wind, I was vaguely aware of hubbie shouting up to me from the shoreline, but I couldn’t really work out what he was saying. So, I simply ignored him. More fool me. But, on and on he kept shouting, and waving, so I yelled back, head still down: “Hang on, give me a minute, I need more rocks and I’ve spotted some really big ones.” Which turned out to be quite the unfortunate choice of words, as, finally lifting my head up, I came face-to-groin with a rather attractive young Spanish man, standing to attention in the sand dunes above me, meerkat-style, hands on hips, grinning down at me, seemingly very proud of his wares. Somehow, I had missed the memo that Cabopino is also a muchloved and famous nudist beach. Oops. Never have I been more embarrassed. Especially as I remembered how the wind can distort words. So, no more art classes for me. Friday nights I’m back in the local venta (bar) from now on. Much safer. Right, must dash. Lord Muck’s on the phone to Sebastian and ‘rocks’ are featuring heavily in the conversation…

Over the past few years, outdoor living has become even more important to us than ever before. The garden is now officially another ‘room’ in the home and as such, needs to be treated as an extension of your sitting, kitchen or dining room. That doesn’t mean the decor has to be the same as the interior. In fact, this is an area where you can get really creative. On trend for summer 2022 are bright, tropical colours, vintage styles and super-luxe seating, and let’s not forget a truly fabulous garden table, perfect for getting all the family around for an alfresco lunch on those warm summer days!

Cheshire Property Staging Hello! I hope you’re all doing well, it feels like it’s been a while! We’re just about coming up for air after our busiest spring yet, the housing market is getting livelier by the day and we’re officially open to the public at our new studio. We’ve just taken on a fabulous new project and I look forward to sharing that with you. Did someone also say it’s wedding season? It feels like so much love is in the air! Susie

Design and relationships formed If you’ve been a client of ours, I’m sure you’d agree that we become more than just ‘designers’ to you, we truly become friends and that’s absolute key to us creating the most personal and appropriate designs for your home and family. If we don’t understand you and really get to know you well, then that will reflect in the work created. If you’re thinking of making changes to your home, before you choose any trade or designer, you need to really get a feel to see if they align with you, your family and your end goals. If something doesn’t feel right from the start, it often sticks and when someone is spending so much time in your home, it’s crucial you feel comfortable.

sideboard that won’t allow for a lamp etc. Consider the scale of all the elements in the room and how they relate to each other. 2. Poorly positioned curtain rails. It’s a common mistake to hang curtains very close to the window, but if ceiling height allows, install the rail half a foot above the window, this way everything looks larger and the room is opened up. Television appearance I don’t suppose any of you caught us on The Great House Giveaway, did you? It’s been aired on BBC Wales and now channel 4 and it shows us helping a house achieve a whopping £25,000 over what was expected due to the overall presentation. The presenter, for the first time, did a special feature on the benefits of staging a property prior to selling. This was wonderful to see, as our mission is to help more people achieve higher asking prices and quicker sales. Home staging really does work!

Design advice from me to you… New studio You may have seen over on Instagram that we have moved! We’re in a great spot just by Wilmslow Garden Centre and the Ferrari and Porsche dealerships. We are now officially open, so feel free to pop in and say hello, chat about any projects you have or have a coffee or a glass of Champagne! The sign is up, so keep an eye out for us!

There are certain elements and items in a room that we really must put some thought into prior to installing or purchasing. These are just a few things that I’d like you to consider: 1. Furniture that just doesn’t fit in the space or with existing pieces. Pay attention to the height of what you currently have and what you are buying. It’s often overlooked and you could end up with a coffee table higher than your sofa or a

Follow us on Instagram to keep up to date with our projects and to access all the behind-the-scenes action and lots of valuable information and advice! @cheshirepropertystaging

3. Too many accessories! I’m sure you know we love it when a project reaches the final styling stage and one of my top tips is to AVOID clutter. You know what I mean – when you can’t choose what to sacrifice or items from the children growing up, are there still baby photos in frames filling every shelf or sideboard? My way of styling is by grouping things into THREE – something tall, medium and small. That could be a sculpture or plant, then a framed photo, then a small candle – this can be done on both ends of a shelf. Maybe the one above has two photo frames but nothing else etc. If you can part with the vase that you were given as a wedding present from an aunt and put it in another room or take out the framed photos and put in a large multi-photo frame for the wall, then great!

FOOD

Ruby Chocolate Bark For these lovely chocolate bites, choose the best chocolate you can find. We have gone for a fruity ruby chocolate, which looks great decorated with the freeze-dried raspberries and chopped pistachios and rose petals. You can really play with this idea and switch up the type and flavour of chocolate and toppings. Makes approx. 30 favours 300g ruby chocolate 10g freeze-dried raspberries 50g chopped pistachios Rose petals (or your preferred chocolate and toppings) 1. Line a 12cm x 24cm baking tray with parchment paper. 2. Break up the chocolate into pieces and place in a large bowl set over a pan of gently simmering water. Gently melt the chocolate, stirring occasionally until melted and smooth.

3. Pour the melted chocolate onto the lined baking tray and using a spoon or spatula, spread the chocolate evenly over the baking tray. 4. Whilst the chocolate is still melted, scatter over the dried raspberries, pistachios and rose petals. 5. Allow to set in the fridge. To portion into pieces, use a knife dipped into boiling water and cut the chocolate into neat, uniform shapes or, for a more rustic look, break the chocolate into shards.

Meringue Kisses These look so effective and can be coloured to match the whole colour scheme of your wedding. Look for small petit four boxes to present the meringues in. Makes approx.50-60 small favours (we suggest four to five per guest) 3 egg whites 300g caster sugar Gel food colouring (optional) 1. Preheat your oven to 120°C/fan 100°C/gas mark ½. Line two baking trays with parchment paper. 2. Place the egg whites in a large bowl and beat until they have doubled in size and look foamy. Start incorporating the sugar a spoonful at a time, whisking whilst you do.

Once the meringue is thick, glossy and holding stiff peaks, whisk in the food colouring to your desired shade. 3. Fit a piping bag with a round nozzle. For striped meringue kisses, paint a line of food colouring down the inside of your piping bag. 4. Fill the piping bag with the meringue mixture. Holding the piping bag vertically over the baking tray, gently squeeze the bag, pulling up and away as you do to create a peak. Bake for 50 minutes or until crisp. Note: baked meringues should lift off the parchment paper easily.

Did you know that 13th–19th June is Men’s Health Week? Urology Clinics Manchester has taken some time to line up advice around men’s health topics… What is ED? ED stands for erectile dysfunction. This is when someone has problems maintaining an erection. It occurs in half of men aged between 40 and 60 years of age. The predominant causes of ED are diseases that affect blood vessels. Blood vessel damage can occur in smokers, people with high blood pressure or heart disease, diabetics and those with high cholesterol. The small blood vessels in the penis can be damaged, leading to erectile problems. In some cases, ED may be the warning sign that other blood vessels in the body are at the early stages of damage, such as the blood vessels of the heart, which can then lead to heart attacks. What can I expect with ED? In most cases, if you do not make efforts to improve your health, it is likely to worsen. You should consider having testosterone, cholesterol, diabetes and prostate (PSA) blood tests, in addition to a general health check. What are the treatment options for ED? In most cases, ED can be treated with tablets, such as Viagra and Cialis, but it is important to make lifestyle changes: stop smoking; eat five portions of fruits and vegetables a day; exercise three times a week; and drink less alcohol. Other treatments include injections, vacuum pumps, topical liquids and penile prosthesis. ED1000 is a newer treatment, it helps new blood vessels grow into the penis. In large trials across Europe and North America, ED1000 has been shown to help two in three men get better erections with tablets, where the tablets may have stopped working as well as compared to previously.

What is Peyronie’s disease? Peyronie’s disease is a condition that causes the formation of a fibrous scar in the penis (or plaque). The plaque can lead to a curve or narrowing in the penis, pain on erection, reduction in the quality of erections and loss of length and girth. In severe cases, this can make sex difficult, if not impossible, which can have a profound effect on the quality of life of men and their partners. Approximately one in 11 men will develop Peyronie’s disease, although the number is likely higher, as many maybe too embarrassed to seek help from their doctor. What can I expect with Peyronie’s disease? Peyronie’s disease has two ‘phases – acute and chronic. The acute phase can be viewed as the active part of the disease process. Patients often develop pain on erection and notice a change in their penile shape. This can last up to 18 months, at which point, it ‘burns itself out’ and patients enter the chronic or stable phase. When a patient presents with active disease, the chance of spontaneous improvement is approximately 20 percent, the chance of staying the same is 40 percent and the chance of further progression is 40 percent. What are the treatment options for Peyronie’s disease? The treatment options depend on the phase the patient is in, the severity of the deformity and quality of erections. Many patients find that addressing the strength of their erections, along with advice and reassurance, is enough. Men that experience pain on erection can find that simple antiinflammatories can help.

This information does not replace a doctor’s opinion and if you suffer any of these problems, always see your GP.

What type of surgery is available? Patients with bent erections who have been stable for more than six months and are unable to have sex with their partner may undergo penile-straightening surgery. The exact method of straightening the penis is determined by the site and severity of the curvature as well as whether they have strong erections. There are essentially three types of operation: 1. Making the side opposite the plaque shorter (known as a Nesbit’s procedure or plication procedure) 2. Making the side of the penis with the plaque longer by inserting a graft (Lue procedure or grafting procedures) 3. Inserting an inflatable penile prosthesis. What is a circumcision? A circumcision is an operation to remove the foreskin, leaving the head (or glans) of the penis exposed. The foreskin is the retractable fold of skin that covers the end of the penis. Why should I have a circumcision? There are several reasons patients should consider having a circumcision. These include: • If the foreskin has become tight and is making it difficult or impossible to pull back and wash or is painful on erection. Known as phimosis • If you are getting recurrent infections known as balanitis • If you have skin disease on the foreskin or head of the penis caused by inflammation or warts • For pre-cancerous or cancerous cells of the foreskin. What are the benefits of having a circumcision? Having a circumcision should mean that you are able to clean around the head of the penis, reducing the risk of infection. It may resolve pain experienced by a tight foreskin or inflammation.

The OrthTeam are a group of highly skilled consultants based at the multi-million-pound OrthTeam Centre in Didsbury, Manchester. The facility offers patients world-class expertise combined with state-of-the-art diagnostics I've been advised that I need a hip replacement, what are the benefits of having Mako robotic-assisted surgery? Mako robotic-assisted hip replacements are quickly becoming the new gold standard for hip replacement surgery. Essentially, there are two main parts to the procedure. We use a CT scan to accurately plan the surgery. We work out exactly what size cup and stem we need to perfectly reproduce each patient’s own body shape. We then use the Mako robotic arm to carry out the surgery to exactly how we planned it. This results in faster recovery, better long-term function and a longerlasting replacement. Mako is the global leader in robotic orthopaedics and I offer this surgery at Spire Manchester Hospital, which is the partner of the OrthTeam Centre and the busiest centre in the UK. Professor Max Fehily, OrthTeam Consultant Hip Surgeon.

My son had a knock to his head whilst playing rugby, he seems okay, but what concussion signs should I look out for, just to be on the safe side? Concussion is common in children following head injuries and it is very important to diagnose, so it can be managed appropriately, with time off sport and possibly school also. Common symptoms include: • • • • • • • • •

Headache Dizziness Neck pain Feeling faint Blurred or double vision Nausea Sore neck Getting tired a lot Trouble sustaining attention or easily distracted

If you’re concerned, please see a Sport and Exercise Medicine Consultant for further advice. Dr John Rogers, OrthTeam Consultant Sport and Exercise Medicine (SEM) Physician.

I suffer from knee pain. What are the benefits of radiofrequency denervation over more traditional treatments for pain relief? Radiofrequency denervation involves placing a specialised needle close to the nerve(s) that supply a painful joint, or painful area of the body. Targeted radio waves are released in a controlled manner, which alter the structure and function of the nerve, reducing pain signals. The techniques used are relatively straightforward and are undertaken under local anaesthetic. There risks are very low, and whilst some temporary discomfort can occur, the majority of patients report significant reductions in pain afterwards. The benefit can last for many months, and if successful can be repeated. This treatment is available at the OrthTeam Centre. Tendinopathy Clinic at the OrthTeam Centre

Tendinopathy is the general term for a range of medical conditions in and around tendons. These issues typically arise from ‘overuse’ injuries and are often accompanied by pain, weakness, inflammation or stiffness.

hand and it results from overuse of the tendons on the outside or inside of the elbow. Lateral elbow tendinopathy (‘tennis elbow’) and medial elbow tendinopathy (‘golfer’s elbow’) affect many people, not just athletes.

OrthTeam experts treat a wide range of tendon problems, including: • Facet joints of the spine • Sacroiliac joints • Shoulder • Knee • Some conditions that involve trapped nerves close to the skin

Common symptoms: • The primary sensation is pain on the outer or inner aspect of the elbow. Lateral elbow tendinopathy involves the common extensor tendon origin and is felt on the outside of the elbow. Medial elbow tendinopathy involves the common flexor tendon origin and is felt on the inside of the elbow. Pain typically develops gradually and, at the start, following exercise, but later, there may also be pain at rest. Stiffness or tightness in the elbow and forearm region may also be present.

Patellar tendinopathy (jumper’s knee) is pain in the patellar tendon – a band of tissue connecting the kneecap (patella) to the shin bone (tibia). It’s usually caused by repetitive activities, such as runningbased sports, basketball and volleyball. Common symptoms: • Pain just beneath the kneecap during activities like jumping, running, kicking and squatting. Elbow tendinopathy is associated with repetitive use activities of the wrist and

Achilles tendinopathy is a painful condition affecting the Achilles tendon and tends to be an overuse injury. Professional and weekend athletes can suffer from the condition, however, it’s also common in people not involved in sport. Sometimes, it can be related to certain types of arthritis.

Common symptoms: • Pain at the back of the heel and in the middle of the tendon (also causing pain with running and jumping activities and sometimes painful when walking), swelling and tenderness of the Achilles tendon. Diagnosis and treatment of tendinopathy Your OrthTeam consultant will take a full medical history, focusing on common risk factors, and an examination is usually followed by an ultrasound or MRI scan to confirm the diagnosis and to look for any associated problems, such as a tear within the tendon. Your consultant will advise you on how to modify any identified risk factors and how to adapt exercise. Your treatment plan will depend on where you’re experiencing tendinopathy and may include some of the following: physiotherapy; nutritional advice (including optimal protein intake and collagen), an ultrasound-guided injection of Platelet Rich Plasma (PRP) or corticosteroid.

Helping clients to look after and grow their wealth, to ensure matters are dealt with tax efficiently. Private client practice is an ever-burgeoning field. No two days are ever alike and that’s why I get so much satisfaction from my role.

What is the lifetime allowance? An important element of holistic financial planning is making provision for retirement and there is a catch many people don't know about – the lifetime allowance (LTA). This limits the amount you can build up in pensions without triggering a tax charge when you access your pension. Currently £1,073,100 and frozen until April 2026, when there are rumours the LTA could be reduced further. If you trigger a benefit crystallisation event (BCE) and exceed this, there could be a tax charge of 55% if taken as a lump sum

or 25% if taken as income, however, you will also pay income tax at your marginal rate if taken as income. What is the annual allowance? There is also a limit on the amount you are able to save into a pension each year. The annual allowance for most people is £40,000, with tax relief available on personal contributions up to 100% of your earnings or £40,000, whichever is lower. All personal and employer contributions must be within the £40,000 annual allowance. If you earn less than £3,600,

you can still pay up to £2,880 net and receive 20% tax relief, meaning the gross contribution would be £3,600. However, if you are a high earner, earning more than £200,000pa, your annual allowance might be tapered to as low as £4,000. If you have drawn any funds over your tax-free entitlement, you could be liable to the money purchase annual allowance (MPAA), which is £4,000.

Ask the Expert Andrew Higginson Andrew Higginson is Sales Director for Litecraft and BHS Lighting. His detailed knowledge, innovation and creativity in all aspects of lighting and the lighting industry have been instrumental within the company and its current lighting ranges on offer.

How do I choose the best lighting for my home? There are three factors you need to consider: what will the purpose of the light be; what is the style of the room; and what are the measurements of the room regarding height? Lighting can serve many purposes. You could need kitchen task lighting, such as adjustable spotlights, to illuminate your countertops, or a desk lamp for your new work-fromhome office space, for example. For eclectic or retro styles, we suggest copper or satin brass lights with opal shades. Or for the minimalist and Scandi trend, you could opt for a monochrome appearance. If you have a low ceiling in your home, we advise installing recessed downlights,

flush lights or semi-flush lights, which won’t take up too much space. Which lights are safe for outdoor use? For safe outdoor use, they generally need to be IP44 rated or above, which ensures the light is protected against solid materials larger than 1mm and splashes of water from any direction. For driveway lights, we recommend IP67 rated drive over lights. These lights are more durable against outdoor conditions and can even withstand submersion in water for 30 minutes, making heavy rain no problem at all. Opt for an outdoor floodlight if you have a large garden space and are looking for widespread and security-conscious illumination.

How can lighting influence the mood of a space? Bathroom and kitchen lighting should be bright and practical in order to create the best visibility possible and enable you to perform all your daily tasks with ease. Whereas for living rooms and bedrooms, you may want a large main ceiling light that is quite bright and then accent lighting to give a softer, more ambient glow in the evenings. Floor lamps in dark corners can create a cosy atmosphere and work well as a reading lamp too.

Simon Norris Simon Norris is CEO and Founder of luxury vinyl flooring specialists Flooring Projects. Simon has over two decades of experience in the sector, having achieved success with clients such as Nationwide, Costa Coffee, Greggs, Wren Kitchens, Footasylum and Next.

Why is luxury vinyl flooring a good option? Luxury vinyl flooring (LVF), also referred to as luxury vinyl tiles (LVT), may have been around for decades, but not many people are familiar with it. There are several benefits to this kind of flooring, including durability, longevity, excellent acoustics and warmth, plus the fact it’s a long-term, cost-effective option. Perhaps the most valuable benefit to families, however, is the fact that you can achieve longevity and a maintenance-free approach with this surface. LVF will not dent or scratch as easily as some natural wood or stone flooring options and you won’t get the discolouration you may gain with natural flooring. All it requires to keep it looking fresh and new is a regular sweep to

remove any dust or dirt and an occasional mop to restore its fresh sheen look. So, if you have small children and/or pets, you needn’t worry about any damage. Will I be able to achieve my desired look with LVF? At Flooring Projects, we offer a highly expansive range of LVF choices (over 400, in fact) in a variety of colours, textures and finishes. Therefore, you can gain the desired look you had in mind and achieve an authentic feel of hardwood, stone or ceramic flooring but with the much more hardwearing, water-resistant material of LVF. LVF’s genuine appearance means it is an effective substitute for real wood or stone and one that offers greater versatility.

Is it cost-effective and how often do I need to replace it? LVF is strong and hardwearing, so it’s a cost-effective, long-term solution. We also provide a minimum 20-year warranty on all our standard products, with some other products coming with lifetime warranties. So, once fitted, you don’t need to worry about the costs of wear and tear or re-purchasing every few years.

26 children from Lady Barn House School from Years 3-6 successfully took part in the Alderley Edge Festival of Music, Speech and Drama. This was the first time they entered into the Festival’s Speech classes. Everyone performed a solo poem from memory, and Year 6 pupils also read a prepared prose passage. These children started taking speech and performance lessons at Lady Barn in September and performing here was a key part of their experience this year. Having an audience, getting feedback from the adjudicators and seeing performers from different schools and Drama Clubs, all made the festival a great learning opportunity for us. Some Year 6 children reflected on what they had gained… Esha appreciated hearing from the adjudicator because "it was good to see the pieces from a different point of view.” April would advise other people to take part in the festival, "because it builds up your confidence.” Izzy agreed, "once I had done it, I believed in myself." Sonia commented, "I am so grateful we were entered for the competition because I learnt so many new skills.”

REDUCE, REUSE, RECYCLE! Salomon Index.01 recyclable running shoe If you love sports gear and footwear as much as I do, you may also share my twinge of guilt, because the manufacture of such products is seldom environmentally friendly. Running shoes, for example, are usually made of so many different materials (leather, EVA, rubber, TPU, polyester, polyamide), that they can’t really be separated at end of life – so they end up in landfill or incinerated. Salomon has tackled this with the fully recyclable new Index.01 – an all-around running shoe that not only performs on the roads but can later be recycled and used to create future products. The Index.01 is made of only two materials: a recycled polyester upper and a thermoplastic-based sole unit, both of which can be recycled into granules and yarn to make new footwear at end of life. Being from Salomon, it is first and foremost a performance shoe – but, of course, as we expect from one of the most photographed footwear brands at fashion weeks worldwide, it also looks bang on trend. £185, salomon.com

SodaStream Spirit It’s encouraging to see that we are largely embracing the idea of reusable bottles for drinks such as water and coffee – but what if you’re a sparkling water addict? That’s still a sustainability nightmare, because buying a fizzy drink usually means a sealed, single-use receptacle. But wait – did you forget about SodaStream? The latest SodaStream Spirit turns tap water into sparkling water in seconds. You can also infuse it with fruit as a healthy alternative to sugary drinks and even customise the fizz levels. This megapack includes two one-litre and one halflitre BPA-free PET carbonating bottles, which have a lifespan of up to three years, and a CO2 gas cylinder, which makes up to 60 litres of sparkling water and works with a snap-lock bottle system for quicker, easier and more intuitive use. £89.99, John Lewis

One watch on its own may not make much of a dent in the quantities of waste plastic clogging our oceans, however, this is an important product because it represents something essential: changing people’s mindsets. When high fashion makes a declaration like this, people follow. And that’s what the world needs. £895, tomford.co.uk
