hat a day to be a football fan! There’s not just one, but two cup today (3 June). One is in London at 3pm, and one in Glasgow at 5.30pm. So you can even watch both live on TV!

First up, it’s the FA Cup Final. It’s one of the most-watched matches in the footballing calendar and often full of excitement and drama. This year’s event is shaping up to be a goodun’, because it’s the rst ever all-Manchester FA Cup Final. Manchester City will battle rivals Manchester United underneath the legendary Wembley arch. Later in the day, the Scottish Cup Final will be held at Hampden Park. In this epic showdown Celtic, who have won the trophy a record 40 times, will face Inverness Caledonian Thistle who have only had their name on the trophy once. Football giants Celtic are sure to be the favourites to win, as Caley Thistle play in a division lower than them. However, anything is possible in a cup nal, so today could be the day the underdogs come out on top! Whether you’re a fan of one of the teams playing today or you simply love the beautiful game, it’s a great opportunity to enjoy that awesome cup nal atmosphere!

The FA Cup Final kicks off at 3pm and coverage will be shown on BBC One, BBC iPlayer, ITV, STV and UTV. The Scottish Cup Final will kick off at 5.30pm and coverage will be shown on BBC Scotland and BBC iPlayer.

My football team (Plymouth Argyle) enjoyed a successful season – we got promoted to the Championship. All season the message from the manager and the players has been, ‘We win together, we lose together, we go again!’

The Bible doesn’t mention football, but there is a cool bit about teamwork – check out 1 Corinthians 12:12–26. It talks about how everyone has their own skills, talents and abilities. It says when everyone shares those gifts and works as a team, everyone wins. It reminds us that we share the tough times too. Being a Christian doesn’t mean life will be problem-free. However, by trying to live Jesus’ way and spending time with other Christians, you’re part of a massive team that will support you and cheer you on when you’re doing well. The same team will help you when life is tough. Jesus’ team wins together, loses together, and goes again!

Trust in the Lord

Regular readers of Kids Alive! will know that two weeks ago we featured the story of Jacob tricking his brother Esau out of his father’s blessing. Well, this week Jacob is the one who gets tricked. Some people might say he got a ‘taste of his own medicine’ (that basically means he was treated as he had treated someone else). So, this time it’s Jacob’s turn to know what it feels like to be tricked. Being tricked or made to look a fool isn’t nice, is it? Whether it’s someone breaking a promise to you or you being the victim of a nasty joke, it can make you feel upset, angry and disappointed.

Unfortunately there are situations in our lives where someone might trick us or make a fool of us. There may be people who let us down or lie to us. Knowing people could hurt our feelings like this can make it harder to trust others. However, there is someone who we can always trust. No matter what. Who are we talking about? God of course!

The Bible tells us exactly that – Proverbs 3:5–6 says we must all trust God with all our heart. If we do this we can trust God to look after us, keep us safe and always keep his promises. Do you trust him completely?

Children of Faith Children of Faith

In the Bible there are incredible stories of young people choosing to trust God. In return, God used them to do extraordinary things. As you read about these young people, be inspired because Jesus is calling you to make a difference too.

David - Part Two

What Happened?

Goliath, a Philistine giant, challenged the Israelite army to a ght. The Israelites were scared, but when David heard, he was furious. David accepted the challenge and when Goliath teased him for being young, David boldly replied that he had God on his side. David picked up ve stones, ran towards Goliath and slung one. The stone hit Goliath’s forehead and killed him.

What Can We Learn?

David’s faith in God was incredible. He didn’t let his young age stop him from taking a stand for God. God saw how courageous and willing David was and gave him the victory.

Thoughts for You

Do you think you’re too young to make a difference? Read Matthew 19:14 and 1 Timothy 4:12. Your relationship with Jesus has the power to make a big difference in the world around you.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

Comets

Comets are large objects made of dust and ice that travel from the Kuiper Belt or Oort Cloud. They become visible from Earth when they’re captured by the Sun’s gravity and whizz towards it. Some comets head right into the Sun and are never seen again, while others become trapped in an oval-shaped orbit and keep reappearing in our night skies. The most famous comet is Halley’s Comet, which can be seen from Earth every 75 to 79 years.

Comets have four main parts: the nucleus – a bundle of ice and dust that is usually around 10 miles wide; the coma – a cloud of gas around the nucleus that forms as the comet heats up; the dust tail – a trail of dust that can stretch for millions of miles; the ion tail –which is made up of electrically charged gas.

Helping-Hand Appeal

A few months ago we introduced the Helping-Hand Appeal –a fundraising project run by The Salvation Army’s International Development UK and Family Ministries Units. The focus of the appeal changes every year and during 2023, it’s all about water!

The Helping-Hand Appeal encourages people to look beyond their own communities and help others around the world.

Picture It

It’s a hot day. You’re running around playing your favourite sport. You’re getting very warm (and a little bit sweaty!) so you take a moment to rest. What do you reach for?

There’s a good chance the answer is water!

Water Is Amazing!

We need water to live. For many of us, that may not seem like a big deal. We can turn on the tap and get water quite easily. But for 771 million people around the world, it’s not so simple.

Water scarcity is a big problem and it is getting worse. Water scarcity means people are struggling to get the water they need to meet their daily needs.

The Salvation Army is working with individuals and communities to nd ways to overcome water scarcity.

Water’s The Problem?

Water is supposed to be good for us, but in some places, people are forced to drink and use contaminated water that makes them sick. This might be because the water source, such as a natural spring or river, is shared with animals.

12

Water’s The Solution?

People have been working hard to nd solutions to the problem of water scarcity. Many tools and technologies have been created. Examples include: concrete protection around natural springs to stop the water becoming contaminated; sand dams to help people access a store of clean water all year round – even when the rains stop in the dry season; boreholes drilled into the ground, so people can pump water from the earth instead of digging into the dry riverbed.

Constructing boreholes is one of the solutions that The Salvation Army have introduced as part of a project based in the of Malawi and Esther is one of the women who has been involved.

Meet Esther

‘My name is Esther. I live in Lameck Kambombo in northern Malawi with my husband and four children. I’m the chairperson for our village development committee.

‘We reached out to The Salvation Army because we were having problems with diseases in the village.

‘The water we were using was contaminated and we suffered from diseases like cholera and malaria. We drew water from the rivers and had no way to treat the water so we fell sick again and again.

‘My children are clever, but because I needed their help collecting water, they would miss classes. It was hard for them.

‘We worked with The Salvation Army to construct a borehole that the whole community can use.

‘Now, we are flexible, we are happy and we are hygienic. Now, we drink safe water. There is no more malaria in the community.

‘We are thankful for this borehole – it has given us new life!’

Find Out More

We’re going to share more about The Salvation Army’s clean water projects in the next few issues of Kids Alive! so be sure to read all about it.

Spend a Penny, Give a Pound

One way to support Helping-Hand 2023 is by taking on the Spend a Penny, Give a Pound challenge. It’s simple: over the course of one day (or longer, if you choose) donate £1 for each time you use the loo! You can even use the Toilet Tally to help you and your household keep track.

Ask a parent or carer to use their phone camera to scan this pattern (a QR code) which will take them to the Toilet Tally.

Cool Colou ri ngs

This wonderful Water is Life Colouring was sent to us by Eva, age 5. She’s done a fab job of adding plenty of colour to the scene.

There’s plenty of football action happening this weekend, so here’s a Fab Footballer Colouring from Keano, age 8. Great idea to add the team name and kit manufacturer!

George, age 3, also got involved by colouring in a Water is Life Colouring. Great work, George!

Here’s another awesome DJ Colouring. This one is from Simon, age 6. There’s barely any white space left, which is what we like to see!

Migle, age 6, has put plenty of effort into this DJ Colouring! We love how many different colours he’s used.

Water is Life was a popular colouring for our readers! Here’s another brilliant one, this time from James, age 6. We really like the colourful sh.

This colourful and bold Fab Footballer Colouring was completed by Maddison, age 10. What a beautiful day for a game!
