Get ready for a family adventure in new lm

Just Super. Hedvig is an 11-year-old gaming enthusiast who nds her life turned upside down when she must step into her father’s shoes sooner than expected. Her dad doesn’t have any old ordinary job, though. He’s the town’s secret superhero –Super Lion! The job of Super Lion is passed down from parent to child, but Hedvig’s lack of super strength, speed or co-ordination is a problem. Then her dad chooses her cousin Adrian to become the next family superhero instead of her!

Hedvig doesn’t let this news stop her, though. She visits her grandmother and the two form an unlikely team. She will need her grandmother’s help to be able to discover her inner superpower and prove she has what it takes to be the next Super Lion!

‘Just Super’ is out in UK cinemas now

A few weeks ago, my youngest daughter was learning about superheroes at school. Her homework was to design her own superhero. When I asked her what she was going to draw, she said, ‘You, Daddy!’ When I asked what my powers were, she said, ‘Cuddles and tickles!’

I’m not sure those ‘powers’ would be particularly helpful if Earth was attacked by a super villain from a parallel universe. But they’re important to my daughter, because they help her to feel safe and happy.

Sometimes I wish I could see God in more super ways – maybe not a pillar of fre and the parting of the water (you can read about on page 5 this week). Then again, I don’t think I need God in that way. Most often, I just need God to help me know everything’s going to be all right. A bit like getting a big, heavenly super-hug.

READ THE COMMENT BELOW ABOUT CONSIDERING HOW YOU SEE GOD IN YOUR LIFE

I Wonder…

When I read Bible stories like the one in the cartoon strip opposite, I wonder why God doesn’t do those sorts of things in my life. Having said that, I’m also glad he doesn’t, because pillars of re and seas being parted for me to walk through would really scare me!

I experience God through nature and the people around me. I love being by the sea or out in the countryside – the scenery always amazes me. And I love looking up at the moon and stars on a clear night. When I stop and think that God created our planet, the universe and everything in it, it blows my mind!

My family, friends and colleagues often help me to feel close to God. Sometimes a friend will say

something that feels like a message from God or they’ll help me and it’s like seeing God in action. During tough times in my life I’ve felt God through the help and comfort family and friends have shown me. And when things are good and I’m having fun with people I know, I feel like God’s with us too and thank him for the good things in my life.

I wonder how you see, hear or feel God. You might feel close to God when you’re singing, playing an instrument or listening to music. Maybe it’s when you’re dancing or playing sport that you experience God. Perhaps it’s in some of the ways I’ve described above. Take some time to think about how you experience God.

The cosmos or universe is so enormous and stupendous it’s mind-boggling! Here are some facts about space that are … well, cosmic!

luna 1

Luna 1 was an unmanned spacecraft launched by the Soviet Union (a collection of countries run by Russia) on 2 January 1959. The aim of the Luna 1 mission was to land on the Moon, but the control system failed meaning Luna 1 missed the Moon by 5,995km. In terms of space exploration that’s actually pretty close, so even though the main mission didn’t go to plan, Luna 1 is considered the rst spacecraft to reach the Moon. It was also the rst man-made object to leave Earth’s orbit and orbit the Sun.

When Luna 1 was 113,000km from Earth, it released a large bright orange cloud of sodium gas that could be seen from the Indian Ocean. This was as bright as one of the faintest stars that can be seen in the night sky – it would have been dif cult to see with the naked eye, but it could be seen with a telescope.

MOTOGP BRITISH GRAND PRIX SILVERSTONE GOES FULL THROTTLE FOR…

Dramatic, thrilling and fast, the MotoGP British Grand Prix takes place from 4–6 August. In case you’re wondering what the MotoGP British Grand Prix is, let us explain: every summer the best motorcyclists from around the world gather at Silverstone and compete in races to win a trophy and valuable world championship points. Silverstone rst hosted a motorcycle grand prix in 1977. Giacomo Agostini holds the record for the most Grand Prix victories and, having won 122 times, is known as the king of motorcycle racing. Agostini is now retired, so won’t be participating this year. Some riders to look out for are: Francesco Bagnaia from Italy; Johann Zarco from France; and Stefan Bradl from Germany. In recent years, Francesco Bagnaia has been the man to beat, gaining a whopping 194 points to claim last year’s World Championship. No doubt the other contestants will be trying to beat him, but can they do it? Can they bring back the crown? Who will you be rooting for?

You can enjoy all the action across the weekend on BT Sport and ITV. If you miss the race you can catch up on ITV4’s highlights show at 8pm on Monday or watch any time on ITVX.

Living

Back to School

If you’re a kid living in England or Wales, you probably think it’s way too early to start talking about going back to school. You’ve only just nished! However, children in Scotland will be lining up for class again really soon, so it’s the perfect time to talk about being prepared for a new school year.

If you’ve still got another month until you’re back at the school gates, pop this issue somewhere safe for when you need it.

Dealing With Feelings

People feel differently about going back to school. Some people can’t wait to get back in the classroom and see their friends, but others will be dragging their feet and wishing the holidays were longer.

To help you process your feelings about going back to school, try writing or drawing them on paper (or you could use the space below). You could write a story, diary, poem, or draw a comic or picture – whatever helps you. Think of the things you’re looking forward to and the things you’re a bit anxious about. Then use them to talk to your parents, carers or another grown-up about how you’re feeling. Talking through questions you have can also help.

If you don’t have a piece of paper to hand, use this space to write or draw how you’re feeling about going back to school

a healthy and an active lifestyle and caring for your physical, mental and spiritual well-being.

New School, Same Awesome You

Are you starting a new school this term? Whether you’re moving to a different area or starting high school, new schools can feel a little scary. However, don’t panic, because you won’t be the only one feeling that way. Feeling nervous is completely normal, but here are some top tips to hopefully make the move easier.

Plan your journey to your new school in advance. You could even do practice runs with your parents or carers. Then you won’t have to worry about getting lost or being late on your rst day.

Finding your way around a new school can be tricky, especially if you’ve started high school and you have to move classrooms for different subjects. Don’t be afraid to ask for help if you’re not sure where to go.

Make sure you have everything you need for your rst day, such as a bag, pencils, pens and books.

Face your new school challenge with a smile and a positive attitude. Be yourself and show your new classmates how awesome you are!

If there’s someone new in your school, make them feel welcome. Be kind and friendly and help them nd their way around and settle in.

Be Prepared

rst day of school will come around before you know it, so make sure you’re ready for it. Being prepared for your rst day can help it go smoothly and be less stressful.

If you’ve been staying up late during the holidays try to go to bed a bit earlier in the last week before school. Then it won’t be such a shock when you’re getting up early again because you’ll be well rested.

Pack your bag and get your uniform ready the night before school. Then you won’t be scrambling around, trying to nd everything, in a mad rush on your rst morning. This is a good tip for every school day, not just your rst day!

Plan a healthy and nutritious breakfast so you’re well set up for your rst day back learning.

All About EsME!

Hello, readers, my name is Esme. I’m 15 years old and I’m currently in year 10 of high school. My favourite subject at school is art, but not the usual drawing and painting side of art that you’re probably thinking of. I work with clay and make sculptures. I know, crazy right? It does get very messy, but I love it! I love that I can make anything and it doesn’t have to be perfect – my imagination goes wild!

I also really like acting and drama. That’s what I want to be when I’m older – an actor. I would love to be on stage with all the lights and costumes. What do you want to be when you’re older?

Right now, I’m doing work experience here at The Salvation Army in the Publishing Department. I’m learning about how the magazines that The Salvation Army publishes get made.

I’m a Christian and I go to a church in Harrow, London. I’ve been going there all my life. Going to that church has helped me grow in faith and build a relationship with God. Very soon I’m going into year 11. I’m a bit worried, but I know that Jesus will be with me and will make me strong. If you want to sample some of Esme’s work, check out this week’s page 11 to read two of her awesome articles!
