Το 2009, o Δήμος Αθηναίων δημιούργησε το site “This is Athens”. Σ’ αυτό, οι Αθηναίοι πολίτες αναρτούσαν φωτογραφίες από την πόλη τους και έγραφαν μόνοι τους την αντίστοιχη λεζάντα. Το αποτέλεσμα ήταν θεαματικό: οι πιο γοητευτικές πτυχές της Αθήνας δημιούργησαν ένα τεράστιο κολάζ, τα «κλικ» ξεπέρασαν κάθε προσδοκία και το ενδιαφέρον από κάθε μέρος της Γης πολλαπλασιαζόταν καθημερινά. Έτσι, οι επικεφαλής του εγχειρήματος αποφάσισαν να εξελίξουν το project και να το πάνε ένα βήμα παραπέρα… Η εξέλιξη του “This is Athens” δεν είναι άλλη από το “This is my Athens”. Μέσα από ένα ανοιχτό κάλεσμα, συγκεντρώνονται εκατοντάδες Αθηναίοι εθελοντές που παίρνουν τον ρόλο περιηγητή για τους τουρίστες που επισκέπτονται την πόλη τους. Η διαδικασία είναι απλή: ο τουρίστας μπαίνει στο site, επιλέγει την κατηγορία που ανταποκρίνεται στα ενδιαφέροντά του (τέχνη και πολιτισμός, νυχτερινή έξοδος, γαστρονομία, ιστορία, shopping κ.λπ.), οι υπεύθυνοι βρίσκουν τον εθελοντή που ανταποκρίνεται στις εκάστοτε ανάγκες και… η βόλτα ξεκινάει! Μιλάμε πάντα για βόλτα και ποτέ για ξενάγηση, αφού οι εθελοντές δεν εστιάζουν σε ιστορικές αναφορές και σε μνείες στην αρχαιότητα, παρά παίρνουν από το χέρι -κυριολεκτικά και μεταφορικά- τον τουρίστα και του συστήνουν τα αγαπημένα τους σημεία στην πόλη. Όπως ακριβώς θα έκαναν σ’ έναν φιλοξενούμενό τους. «Είναι εντυπωσιακό το πόσο έντονη εθελοντική δράση αναπτύσσουν οι Αθηναίοι! Ειδικά στο συγκεκριμένο project, η επιθυμία τους να προσφέρουν πηγάζει μόνο από την αγάπη τους για την πόλη και την ανάγκη να μοιραστούν τις χαρές της», αναφέρει η επικεφαλής του project, Καλλιόπη Ανδριοπούλου. «Τις περισσότερες φορές, εθελοντής και τουρίστας γίνονται φίλοι, ανταλλάσσοντας τηλέφωνα, mail και facebook!». in 2009, the Municipality of Athens created the “This is Athens” website. Athenian citizens have access to the site, and can upload photos of their city and write their own captions. The result was spectacular: the most charming facets of Athens formed a giant collage, and “clicks” exceeded every expectation, as interest from all over the world multiplied daily. hence, the heads of the initiative decided to develop the project and move it one step forward… Thus, “This is Athens” became “This is my Athens”. hundreds of volunteer Athenians responded to an open call inviting them to take on the role of a tour guide for visitors to their city. The process is simple: tourists enter the site, select a category that interests them (art and culture, nightlife, gastronomy, history, shopping, etc.) and the moderators find a volunteer that fits their needs and… the walk begins! it’s a walk and not a tour, as the volunteers do not focus on historical facts and ancient citations, but rather take the tourists by the hand -both literally and metaphorically- and show them their favourite places in the city, in much the same way as they would for one of their own guests. “it’s amazing how strongly Athenians feel about volunteering! for this project in particular, it seems that their desire to contribute stems from their love for their city and the need to share their joy with visitors from foreign cultures,” says Calliope Andriopoulou, the head of the project. in most cases, the volunteer and tourist exchange telephone numbers, emails and become facebook friends!”
