HIP HOP
Goldie Lookin Chain In 2008 the Goldie Lookin Chain (GLC) where the first Hip Hop group in the world to feature in Soft Secrets. The Goldie Lookin Chain are not only vocal as satirical musicians, yet they are also active in raising public awareness about serious social issue in the UK such as the dangers of 'Soap Bar' and 'Glass Weed'. Soft Secrets are therefore always with lazystrain open to what the GLC has to say in paper.
know where to look. Usually Chepstow is the best place. Do you ever see any nice draw in Newport these days? It’s far too expensive these days. It’s like fifty quid for two spliffs. I stick to cough medicine and vodka - itÅfs a better buzz too. What's the best ganja youz smoked this year? This year we went to Swansea for a camping holiday. Big G, our chief of security, brought 30 high grade hash cakes. We ate 27 of them before 9 o'clock and tried to burn some stuff in the sand dunes and went to sleep at 10. The next day it rained so we came home. I was stoned for 6 days. When did the chain get involved with Newport County football team? Mike Balls is looking for a coaching roll with the youth girlÅfs team. We have been hanging out with the Welsh rugby team too in a new bar in Cardiff called the Kuku club. ItÅfs a memberÅfs only club and we are now honoury members. Did that parody 'Newport State of Mind' get on Mike's Balls? It mainly seems to piss off our mate Steve who runs our local pub. He smashed up his front room with a cricket bat and went purple for 3 days.
The Goldie Lookin Chain hail from Newport in South Wales. The 'chain' itself is forged from it's full-time members; 2Hats, Adam Hussain, Billy Web, Eggsy, Maggot, Mike Balls, Mystikal, P. Xain. While the part-timers C. Live, DCI Burnside, Dipper Nan, Graham the Bear, Leeroy Fashions, Mc Flatpress, One Step Down, Rosco P and Stressed Armstrong, make up the missing links of the chain. (at least according to wikipedia). Word is that the Goldie Lookin Chain have a new Christmas album out. Soft Secrets were of course interested to get a fresh perspective on the whole Newport scene again. Connecting up with the whole chain, in one place, at
one time, would however have been totally impracticable (and possibly dangerous) so it was arranged that the GLC would answer some quick-fire questions in their own time at home. Soft Secrets : Is 'Glass Weed' still prevalent in Wales? People got so into that weed that the hardcore now smoke windows and empty wine bottles. Those were great days. Emphysema is now very prevalent in the Welsh valleys cause of that shit!! What about the soapbar is it still on the streets? Now solids with bits of plastic in it - that's a different story. You can still get that if you
How long did it take for the GLC to line up their own 'Newport State of Mind (Your Not From Newport)' track in reproach? How long to you think? We did it in a day including shooting and editing the video. What else have the chain been up to lately? We have been learning dance moves and writing a film. We hope to put it all into motion next year. I have been doing an ambient album too. How many links in the Chain have been to Amsterdam? What did youz think of it?
We have played Amsterdam a bunch. It a great city if youÅfre a sex tourist. ItÅfs a great city. Do you think cannabis coffeeshops could happen over here in the UK? I thought there already were some? There are in Newport. How many cheeseburgers could the GLC eat between them in one sitting? I would say 3 each, maybe 4 at a push. Depends how big they are. What are the tastiest munchies available in Newport these days? Mint poppets they are the best. Difficult to come by though. Please tell us about some of Rhys / P. Xains inventions (the ones not pending patent). I invented a special video aid to help you in the gym but I can't say too much about it. I'm also working on a machine called a 'Transmogrifier' but I doubt it will ever work. Which new projects are the GLC currently working on? Did you know that if you poured the contents of a bottle of wine into your ass it will get you drunk quicker than if you drink it. I'm working on an invention for that too. Many thanks to Rhys for answering these questions, and Emma (the GLC Minder) for arranging this interview.
