LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Wow, summer is over already and school is starting in only a few days! I hope your summer has been more productive than mine! I am actually a bit excited to start school again, with it being my last year at Tech and all. I hope I will be able to get to know more of you before I graduate! The executive board and I have been working really hard to plan the 2014-2015 service year over the summer. I believe that all the ideas we compiled will make this service year a success. We are ready to kick off the school year with a strong start! If you are still contemplating about whether to join Key Club again, please check us out at the Club Fair on October 15th! We still have a lot to offer in terms of service and leadership. Remember that Key Club is the largest student-led high school organization. The main goal of the club is to prepare students to be the most active members of their current and future communities. I hope many of you will choose to stay in the club! Lastly, there is a new addition to my newsletter: Relay For Life. I am the Publicity Coordinator of the Relay For Life Leadership Team, It is the team’s responsibility to plan the BTHS Relay For Life Kickoff and Event. Key Club participates in Relay For Life every year, so it is important to learn more about Relay now. We want everyone to know about Relay year-round and to spread the word of Relay to others, so please read this section! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

CPC WALKATHON
The Chinese-American Planning Council was founded in 1965 as a grassroots community-based organization in response to the tremendous influx of Chinese immigrants after the change in immigrant laws, and in the middle of the Great Society movement. In New York, CPC expanded its services based on the needs expressed by those in the community. CPC has recently achieved accreditation of its childcare centers and received three licenses to open vocational and business schools. Today, the CPC remains as one of the largest Asian Social Services organizations in the United States.

CHINATOWN BEAUTIFICATION DAY August 9, 2014 The mission of Chinatown Youth Initiatives (CYI) is to empower New York City youth with the knowledge and skills that are needed to fulfill the needs of Chinatown, Asian Americans, and other underrepresented communities. By providing a safe and supportive environment, CYI works to build a generation of leaders who raise awareness of self-identity and community issues through project initiatives, such as the annual Chinatown Beautification Day. CYI youth work on building skills in a number of areas such as leadership, communication, and public speaking. These new skills help youth feel more motivated to make changes in their personal lives and communities.

PAL PACKS August 13, 2014 The Police Athletic League (PAL) services New York City’s youth with safe, structured programming designed to engage boys and girls in positive activities that improve their quality of life, present developmental opportunities, and offer the prospect of a brighter future. What began as the closing of streets by the New York City Police Department to allow the city’s unsupervised youth to play became a city-wide Cops & Kids movement and later national model that brought communities and police together in ways that still exist to this day. PAL is New York City’s largest independent youth nonprofit organization that operates head start/day care, after-school, evening teen, summer day camp, youth employment, and much more.

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEAN-UP August 20, 2014 Since August 2011, Assemblyman William Colton has been holding neighborhood cleanups around Bensonhurst and Gravesend as part of his “Speak Up & Clean-Up” campaign. These cleanup events are held not only to inspire people, but to educate them as well. By having these events, we help spread awareness about the importance of keeping our neighborhood clean. Right before Hurricane Sandy struck last year, volunteers helped clear drains and streets of leaves and other trash around Kings Highway between Stillwell Avenue and McDonald Avenue. Assemblyman Colton has reminded us time and time again that because of our efforts, these areas did not flood as much as others after Hurricane Sandy struck. At this particular cleanup, Brooklyn Tech Key Club helped clean up Bensonhurst Park.

RELAY FOR LIFE: WHAT IS RELAY?
Celebrate. Remember. Fight back. At Relay For Life events across the world, people come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the deadly disease. The funds you raise can really make a difference in the fight against cancer. Only with your dedication and fundraising efforts can we finish the fight against cancer. We aren’t only fighting one type of cancer — we are fighting for every birthday that isn’t guaranteed by every cancer in each community. Each person who takes part in the Relay For Life experience can take pride in knowing that their efforts help create a world where this disease will no longer exist, a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or take away anyone’s birthday.
Celebrate what participants and survivors have overcome. Remember people lost to the disease. Fight back against a disease that has taken too much. WHO DO YOU RELAY FOR? Important Dates (Mark your calendars!) October 22, 2014—BTHS Relay For Life Kickoff March 6, 2015—BTHS Relay For Life Event

RELAY FOR LIFE: WHAT IS LUMINARIA?
Luminaria bags are transformed and illuminated after dark at every Relay For Life event. Each luminaria is personalized with a name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Luminaria can also be dedicated to a Relay participant. Each luminaria candle represents a person. They are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers, and so many others. The Luminaria Ceremony generally occurs towards the end of every Relay For Life event and is the most momentous occasion of the relay. As the sun sets, luminaria lining the track light up the night. A crowd, after overflowing with celebration, then falls silent. Relay For Life participants, survivors, and caregivers then gather to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor those who still continue to fight cancer.
WHO WOULD YOU DEDICATE A LUMINARIA TO?

QUOTE OF AUGUST
Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops that will commence in the Fall. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email and/or mention whether I can show your response as anonymous).
This Month’s Focus: When to Lead This Month’s Quote: “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” -Nelson Mandela Email your response to editor.thetechkey@gmail.com for +5 points!

QUOTE OF JULY RESPONSES
Last Month’s Focus: Definition of Leadership Last Month’s Quote: “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” -Peter Drucker I agree with the quote that the virtue of a leader is defined by results. While being liked and being able to deliver speeches are definitely pluses to a leader, the essentials of a leader is what he/she does. The results of a leader's work is the stem of the tree, and the popularity and attributes of them are only branches. Just as the branches can't exist without the stem, the attributes of a person is not enough to define leadership. From my own experience, when working in groups, it didn't matter who the leader was or what their personality was because at the end of the day, all that matter was the final product. -Anonymous Effective leadership is something that doesn’t come easily to everyday people. Leaders must stand out from commoners. People look at leaders not for their word, but for their actions. Speeches are there just to rally and incite the people. I remember a time when I was apply for class president of my fourth grade class. There were only a couple of other candidates that were running. I clearly remember the night before I was to give a speech on what I would do if I were class president. As a fourth grader I remember telling everyone how great everything would be when I was class president. Like everyone running, I told elaborate lies of parties, games, and food (those are the only thing that you could use to entertain a bunch of nine year-olds). Since I’ve learned a valuable lesson, words don’t carry weight. In today’s society, I’ve also learned not to believe a single thing that politicians say. -Anonymous
