KEY CLUB

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? We made it through one whole month of school! Though school has been extremely tiring, there are still many things planned for Key Club! It was a pleasure to meet some new faces in the club at some of the events this month and at our first general meeting. It is amazing to know that there are so many people devoted to serving our community and making a difference in the world. What a turnout at the general meeting! I can already tell that this will be a great service year! We already started giving out boxes for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF! UNICEF is one of Key Club’s Major Emphasis Programs. By fundraising for UNICEF, we are helping to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. This is a deadly disease that kills nearly 60,000 babies and a large number of women each year. Please remember to turn in your boxes to Ms. Nottingham in Room 1W2 each day you fundraise! One last thing: I know that October was a somewhat slow month, with just a few events. We were just getting the club started, so please understand. Do not worry—we have a lot of fun events coming up for November! Some of them include: a food drive and another gardening event! I hope to meet more of you at future events! See you all soon! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

MAKING STRIDES AGAINST BREAST CANCER

The American Cancer Society is the leader in the fight to end breast cancer. Breast cancer is the most common cancer among women in the United States, besides skin cancer. It is also the second leading cause of cancer death in women, behind lung cancer. The chance of a woman having invasive breast cancer some time during her life is about 1 in 8. The chance of dying from breast cancer is about 1 in 36. Right now, there are more than 2.9 million breast cancer survivors in the United States.

RELAY FOR LIFE KICKOFF

Celebrate. Remember. Fight back. At Relay For Life events across the world, people come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the deadly disease. The funds you raise can really make a difference in the fight against cancer. Only with your dedication and fundraising efforts can we finish the fight against cancer. We aren’t only fighting one type of cancer — we are fighting for every birthday that isn’t guaranteed by every cancer in each community. Each person who takes part in the Relay For Life experience can take pride in knowing that their efforts help create a world where this disease will no longer exist, a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or take away anyone’s birthday.

KEY CLUBBER OF OCTOBER

What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month?” Each month, we award a specific Key Clubber(s) who has made the most impact on our club for that month. To receive this award, a Key Clubber must not only attend most events that month but also actively participate and contribute to Key Club and their community. We want a Key Clubber(s) who is fit to represent Brooklyn Tech and serve as a role model to others.

The Key Clubber of October is...

Jonathan Balina “Be the change you want to see in the world.” -Mahatma Gandhi

QUOTE OF OCTOBER

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops that will commence in the Fall. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email and/or mention whether I can show your response as anonymous). **NEW** Each leadership quote will now focus on a different, unspecified quality of a leader. You can interpret each quality in your own way.

This Month’s Focus: Quality of a Leader #1 This Month’s Quote: “It is not the voice that commands the story; it is the ear. —Italo Calvino Email your response to editor.thetechkey@gmail.com with your name and OSIS number for +5 points!

QUOTE OF SEPTEMBER RESPONSES

Last Month’s Focus: Interpretation of a Leader Last Month’s Quote: “A leader is a dealer in hope.” -Napoleon Bonaparte A leader is the central member of a group. A leader gives the other members in a group a sense of direction. A leader is a guide for the group, telling the other members what they should do. They also deal with hope in that they keep the morale raised for the group. Often, in hard situations, a leader is adamant in their tone, and feelings. This can be best demonstrated with former presidents, such as Franklin D. Roosevelt. During the Great Depression, many people were emotionally unsteady. However, Franklin D. Roosevelt was very steady. In his inaugural address, he stated “…the only thing we have to fear is fear itself.” Many people were panicking about the economy, but Franklin D. Roosevelt remained steadfast and gave the people his plan to fix the economy. He gave hope that the nation could be restored to its former glory. —Edward Huang Bonaparte is absolutely correct when he says that "A leader is a dealer in hope." Many of history's great leaders fall under this category. For example, Gandhi and Martin Luther King, both fantastic and inspirational leaders that both led civil movements, were dealers in hope. They influence the mass of people and came to a leadership role by spreading hope. Gandhi spread hope about equality in India and Martin Luther King spread hope for desegregation. An example from my own life: I'm an executive/leader of a club, and often, my group is dismayed when things don't go the way it was planned. They want to give up, but I make sure that they don't and keep the hope up. And because I am able to do that, I am able to effectively be a leader. —Anonymous
