LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Welcome back to school! I hope you all have not been overwhelmed with schoolwork/ homework so soon! School may be happening, but Key Club is happening at the same time as well! I hope you are all as excited as me for the new service year! The executive board and I are working really hard to ensure that this service year will be a success. Be on the lookout for more fun events! Please keep on spreading the word of Key Club! Key Club is the largest student-led high school organization. Members are an integral part of the club—every member counts! I would love seeing some new faces at events and meeting more of you! Remember that Key Club gives you the chance to make a difference in other people’s lives through volunteer opportunities, while also learn leadership skills through conventions and leadership workshops. Leadership skills are essential to have for your future, and are often needed as a part of major careers. One last thing: we finally made a new Facebook group for the 2014-2015 service year. The link to the new group is in the Contact Information section of this newsletter. Please join the group as soon as possible! Facebook will be one of the main social media sites we will use to communicate with members throughout the service year. See you all soon! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

This march was about building a movement and creating a turning point in the fight against climate change by building stronger connections with each other. RELAY FOR LIFE: WHAT IS RELAY?

Celebrate. Remember. Fight back. At Relay For Life events across the world, people come together to honor cancer survivors, remember loved ones lost, and fight back against the deadly disease. The funds you raise can really make a difference in the fight against cancer. Only with your dedication and fundraising efforts can we finish the fight against cancer. We aren’t only fighting one type of cancer — we are fighting for every birthday that isn’t guaranteed by every cancer in each community. Each person who takes part in the Relay For Life experience can take pride in knowing that their efforts help create a world where this disease will no longer exist, a world where this disease will no longer threaten our loved ones or take away anyone’s birthday.

Celebrate what participants and survivors have overcome. Remember people lost to the disease. Fight back against a disease that has taken too much. WHO DO YOU RELAY FOR? Important Dates (Mark your calendars!) October 22, 2014—BTHS Relay For Life Kickoff March 6, 2015—BTHS Relay For Life Event

RELAY FOR LIFE: WHAT IS LUMINARIA?

Luminaria bags are transformed and illuminated after dark at every Relay For Life event. Each luminaria is personalized with a name, photo, message or drawing in memory or honor of a friend or loved one who has been affected by cancer. Luminaria can also be dedicated to a Relay participant. Each luminaria candle represents a person. They are our mothers, fathers, sisters, brothers, aunts, uncles, nieces, nephews, friends, coworkers, and so many others. The Luminaria Ceremony generally occurs towards the end of every Relay For Life event and is the most momentous occasion of the relay. As the sun sets, luminaria lining the track light up the night. A crowd, after overflowing with celebration, then falls silent. Relay For Life participants, survivors, and caregivers then gather to remember loved ones lost to cancer and to honor those who still continue to fight cancer.

WHO WOULD YOU DEDICATE A LUMINARIA TO?

What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month?” Each month, we award a specific Key Clubber(s) who has made the most impact on our club for that month. To receive this award, a Key Clubber must not only attend most events that month but also actively participate and contribute to Key Club and their community. We want a Key Clubber(s) who is fit to represent Brooklyn Tech and serve as a role model to others.

QUOTE OF SEPTEMBER

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops that will commence in the Fall. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email and/or mention whether I can show your response as anonymous).

This Month’s Focus: Interpretation of a Leader This Month’s Quote: “A leader is a dealer in hope.” -Napoleon Bonaparte Email your response to editor.thetechkey@gmail.com for +5 points!

QUOTE OF AUGUST RESPONSES

Last Month’s Focus: When to Lead Last Month’s Quote: “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” -Nelson Mandela I agree with the quote and the idea that a leader should take the front when adversity arises. Anyone can step up and celebrate to a victory; however, not everyone can solve and tackle obstacles. If a leader steps up when problems arise, people will remember him as someone who knows how to face issues. Thus Nelson Mandela is right when he says, “It is better to lead from behind and to put others in front, especially when you celebrate victory when nice things occur. You take the front line when there is danger. Then people will appreciate your leadership.” —Anonymous I agree with this quote. When the times call for it, as a strong leader, you must place yourself on the front lines. Times when the weaker must back off, a strong leaders comes in. When you sit back and let the front lines take the glory of the victory, your subordinates are happy, and you are happy. People will appreciate what you do because you aren’t undermining their abilities. Alternating from the frontlines to the back may be challenging. There will be times of frustration. There will be times where you aren’t exactly sure of what is to come next. Effective leadership comes from instinct. —Anonymous
