LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Happy New Year! I really love the holiday season! I hope you are all enjoying a much needed winter break! I finished my college applications yesterday and have a few days to relax! :) Thank you to everyone who came to the Holiday Party! I hope you all had fun! I’m sorry for the lack of pizza that we had, but I hope everyone still enjoyed the festivities and desserts. Our next big celebration will be Induction in June! If you didn’t come to the Holiday Party, I hope to see you at Induction! For this month’s newsletter, I am not Sandy Mui, but rather, Sandy Claus (haha get it?)! In lieu of the holiday spirit, I added two fun ways in this newsletter for you to earn a few extra points! I know many of you need to catch up on points since there are few events in the winter, so this is the perfect opportunity to take advantage of! I hope to see many of you participate! There are a few more days of the break to enjoy. Stay home, relax, and spend some time with your family. I will be working on my New Year’s resolutions and looking for scholarship opportunities. I hope everyone has been productive in their break thus far, and will continue to not let their break slip away, but at the same time, don’t let schoolwork be the only thing that you do! Enjoy a nice cup of hot cocoa while watching TV or something (always me)! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Claus Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

SANTA’S HELPERS December 13, 2014

Services for the UnderServed (SUS) believes every New Yorker has the right to lead a life with purpose. They have been transforming this belief into reality for over 35 years. Through housing, employment, skillsbuilding, treatment and rehabilitation, and partnering with the people who come to them for services, they create pathways to a rich and productive life. From the moment we walked into the building, there were so many other people there who were already diligently working. We were moving boxes around to place the presents in and sorting through the presents. It was a a lot of work to try and find the presents for the correct person, but it was great because these presents are going to those who really deserve them. Many people donated a lot of amazing stuff. American Eagle donated so many stockings to give to those in need, and many of the presents were donated by the employees at American Eagle. So many helped and pitched in to do something so great this holiday, and it would have been really hard to do it without all the help there was. Everyone there was very helpful and kind. We were all one big team participating in something even bigger. This was an amazing event and I am very proud to have been part of it. —Nayana Shireff

QUOTE OF DECEMBER

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops a couple of weeks prior to Key Club executive board elections. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email and/or mention whether I can show your response as anonymous).

This Month’s Focus: Quality of a Leader #3 This Month’s Quote: “No legacy is so rich as honesty.” —William Shakespeare Email your response to editor.thetechkey@gmail.com with your name and OSIS number for +5 points!

QUOTE OF NOVEMBER RESPONSES

Last Month’s Focus: Quality of a Leader #2 Last Month’s Quote: “Confidence… thrives on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them it cannot live. —Franklin D. Roosevelt In order to be a good leader you must have confidence and you have to have honesty. Liars will feel guilty for what they did. If you don't believe in yourself then you can't expect others to believe in you. So you must have honor. A good leader will have responsibilities over their people and that would motivate them. As a leader you have to have faithful protection toward your people. As you do unselfish performance then others will too. —Anonymous Confidence is defined by the Merrian-Webster’s dictionary as faith or belief that one will act in a right, proper or effective way. Confidence in someone relies on complete faith in that person. Being a leader is partially defined when those below are confident in their leader. A leader must be honest and truthful. The thought of telling a lie must be quickly pushed away from the mind of the leader. Leaders must also follow his or her obligations. It’s simple really, do what you say you are going to do. Leaders must perform the obligations that was specified, if not, he is a liar. Confidence also comes from a leader’s willingness to perform. —-Edward Huang Confidence is personified here, as they use the words "thrives" and "live". Personifying confidence is a way to explain the elements required for trait to be built. These elements: honesty, honor, sacredness of obligations, faithful protection, and unselfish performance are all parts that make up confidence. This quote suggests that these parts are necessities to confidence to exist like how humans require food and water to live. With only a couple of these parts achieved, confidence will be weak or be barely "surviving". Overall, this quote is listing the key elements that will help build confidence in one's self. —Karyee Kang In order to have confidence, you must be truthful to yourself and others. If you are truthful, others will believe in you, which will spark the confidence inside of you. You cannot be selfish and greedy. If you are, that is not confidence but temptation and self promotion. To be a good leader, you must not work for just yourself, but for the good of all and all those counting on you. There is nothing in it for your fellow team members if you only work to better yourself. Your team will not believe in you, and soon, you would start to stop believing in yourself. A leader has to respect and honor his or her team and work together. You build more and more confidence if you know what you're doing, and your team knows what you are doing and believes in you. —Nayana Shireff Confidence is something that everyone should have as a human being. We should all be proud of ourselves and the right decisions we make. There is a clear different between arrogance and confidence. To be a leader, you shouldn't be ashamed of yourself, instead you should stand up tall and show that you are comfortable in your own skin and that you have the confidence and ability to lead people. —Annie Zhang
