LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? What a busy month! I really enjoyed going to the events this month because there were many of you there! It was a pleasure to get to know some of you! It is really amazing to know that there are so many of you committed to making the community a better place to live in. Though the weather was not particularly good for many of the events this month, I hope you guys had fun. Keep up the good work! I am also happy to see that there are a lot of you doing the Fun & Games/Quote of the Month and submitting pictures. It is really a great way to earn a few extra points. By doing all puzzles and responding to the quote of the month, that is already +15. In addition, the maximum you can earn from submitting pictures/articles per event is +10, but you already get points for attending the event. That’s a whole lot of points! However, there are not many members who submitted articles. If writing articles discourages you, please don’t be overwhelmed! I am not asking for more than a paragraph per article, and it is not difficult to write one. If you do need some guidance while writing them, however, I put Article Guidelines on page 15 of this newsletter. I hope I will receive more articles for future events! Hang in there! School is killing me as well, but winter break is just around the corner! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

CLEAN & GREEN: GARDEN STEWARDSHIP + PLANT SALE November 1, 2014 The Gowanus Canal Conservancy is an organization that serves as an environmental representative for the Gowanus Canal Watershed. Its vision is an open, clean and alive Gowanus Canal Watershed. The organization was created in the mid-late 1800s on the site of a former saltmarsh and creek and has seen its fair share of environmental issues. Tons of raw sewage waste, industrial waste products and polluted surface have been captured by the organization for years.

NOVEMBER COMPOST WINDROW BUILD November 16, 2014
Photos by: ANGELA CHEN “One Tired Sunday Afternoon” Food waste. Chop. Leaves. Coffee grinds. Woodchips. Plants. Repeat. It was just so tiring. Key club members went to the Salt Lot, a food composting place, in Park Slope, Brooklyn. Surprisingly, a considerable amount of members showed up! At first, the smell of the food waste was a bit unbearable even 30 meters away, but everyone eventually got used to the composting “fragrance.” Although, the boxes of food were a bit difficult to flip over and the many wheelbarrows of woodchips were almost impossible to flip over without ruining the whole composting pile underneath, everyone was a fighter and plowed through the long five hours of composting. After members finished composting, hamburgers and hotdogs were given out. Overall, composting was a really fun experience, however, this is going to be the first and last time that I do this because my clothes got extremely soiled and my beautiful shoes got ruined. —Jasper Tangchitsumran

ST. JUDE’S GIVE THANKS WALK NYC
Ever since St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital opened in 1962, the lives of children across the world have changed. The mission of St. Jude Children’s Research Hospital is to advance cures, and means of prevention, for pediatric catastrophic diseases through research and treatment. There, no child is denied treatment based on race, religion or a family’s ability to pay.
KEY CLUBBERS
Photos by: HUI SONG & KATHLEEN WONG “Three Mile Walk” One chilly Saturday morning, Key Club members met up in Cadman Plaza Park for the St. Jude’s Give Thanks Walk. Many other schools, such as Stuyvesant and Townsend Harris were there as well. Early birds had to wait a fairly long time for the late comers to arrive. The walk started at 11 am, however, we started to walk half past 11. Thousands of people participated in this event, so it was very packed. Police cars kept blocking the bridge as well, as a result, there was a “people traffic jam” on the Brooklyn bridge. Once we got over the East River, the wind picked up and almost everybody froze. Members also had to walk back the bridge to complete the event. Despite the freezing temperature, the St. Jude’s walk was an enjoyable experience because everyone was socializing and raising awareness at the same time. I would definitely do this again if I have the chance to do so. —Jasper Tangchitsumran

QUOTE OF NOVEMBER
Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops a couple of weeks prior to Key Club executive board elections. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email and/or mention whether I can show your response as anonymous).
This Month’s Focus: Quality of a Leader #2 This Month’s Quote: “Confidence… thrives on honesty, on honor, on the sacredness of obligations, on faithful protection and on unselfish performance. Without them it cannot live. —Franklin D. Roosevelt Email your response to editor.thetechkey@gmail.com with your name and OSIS number for +5 points!

QUOTE OF OCTOBER RESPONSES
Last Month’s Focus: Quality of a Leader #1 Last Month’s Quote: “It is not the voice that commands the story; it is the ear. —Italo Calvino This shows how humanity interprets their surroundings. When someone is telling a story, the listener would use their ears to hear it. Hearing is one thing; you know that your brain is functioning and your body can be able to detect sound waves. Listening is another thing altogether; you are able to hear the person and understand their words. A leader must be able to listen to their fellow peers instead of just acknowledging opinions or suggestions by others. —Edward Huang The voice represents the person speaking, the one telling the story. The ear represent the one listening and taking in/interpreting the speaker's story. This quote is saying that the speaker's story will not mean anything to the listener, unless, if the listener pays attention to the words being spoken. Although, the listener is hearing the story, the way the story is being told wouldn't take much affect to what it means to the listener. The listener controls how he/she perceives the information, and therefore being in "control" of the story in their minds. —Karyee Kang To hold an abundance of great leadership attributes, you must learn how to please your people. In order to do so, your ear must attentive at all times for the people will voice their complaints and their approvals. With what your hearing has done, you as a leader are to put your objectives and actions in order. Your ear is what helps you strive the best of the best as a leader and it helps maximize where your leadership takes you. —Elaine Pun A leader doesn't just say whatever is in their mind and give orders out expecting to be served on a silver platter. A leader isn't "blind" to their surroundings, to the people who look up to them. A leader isn't deaf to the masses, they have to listen. Leaders do not give random orders, in order to "rule", to lead, they have to listen to their peers and know what has to be done. In order to lead, a leader has to use their ears to listen to the majority, to do what's best for everyone. Listening to everyone, not only a few, or to one's self, can make everything fair, equal, and just. Leading isn't done alone. With a group and by listening to that group, and more people, more accomplishments can be done to achieve success, happiness, and gratitude. A leader's voice doesn't command, it is the leader's ears that allow them to hear the voices of what the people want so they can do what must be done. —Nayana Shireff
