LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? I can’t believe I made it out of December alive! That was a really tough month for me because of college applications! Anyway, now we’re in regents week and I hope many of you are able to relax even though you may have finals. You’ll enjoy senior year (after college applications) in January because you most likely won’t have any finals during regents week! I know many of you are disappointed because there were no January events. Unfortunately, January is a difficult month to find events in each year because the weather is so cold. However, I hope that you were able to catch up on points through our Ronald McDonald House Fundraiser and canned food drive. Remember that the first term is coming to an end and you must have 70 points to get the full 8 credits for the first term! If not, you will still get partial credit and will be able to get 8 credits for the second term if you get another 130 points (for a total of 200)! I can’t believe this year has flown by so quickly! I only have three more months as editor for the club :(! I really enjoyed my time as editor by being able to plan events and meet new faces this year. It’s a shame that some of you still don’t know me when you see me, haha. As the weather warms up, we will definitely have more events. Springtime is the perfect time to be out volunteering at Key Club events. I especially like neighborhood cleanups or gardening events in the Spring. I hope to see you all at future events! See you soon! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

HOLIDAY CHALLENGE #2 WINNER

New Year’s Resolution A new year means creating self-improvements and providing more for all the people I care about. An important part of my New Year's resolution is to contribute as much as I can to my community. This does not only consist of Key Club, but also all the other community service clubs I am in. I would like to do as much as I can to make an impact on important causes; it is also important for me to advocate them so they are in the thoughts of the public. At the same time, I would to continue making incredibly unforgettable bonds with fellow members of Key Club in Brooklyn Tech and outside of Brooklyn Tech. This past year, I've created so many friendships that I would probably not have been able to make unless I was in Key Club. I would like to go to as many events as I can to continue helping my community and to encourage others to do so as well. Last but not least, I would like to have fun when doing these events and I hopefully make it to next year's secretary! Written by: Elaine Pun

KEY CLUBBER OF JANUARY

What does it mean to be “Key Clubber of the Month?” Each month, we award a specific Key Clubber(s) who has made the most impact on our club for that month. To receive this award, a Key Clubber must not only attend most events that month but also actively participate and contribute to Key Club and their community. We want a Key Clubber(s) who is fit to represent Brooklyn Tech and serve as a role model to others.

The Key Clubber of January is...

QUOTE OF JANUARY

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops a couple of weeks prior to Key Club executive board elections. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email and/or mention whether I can show your response as anonymous). **Update: As a result of an oversaturation of responses, I will now only include 4 or 5 responses I like the most in the newsletters. However, you will still receive +5 points if you submit a response that is not featured in the newsletter.

QUOTE OF DECEMBER RESPONSES

Last Month’s Focus: Quality of a Leader #3 Last Month’s Quote: “No legacy is so rich as honesty.” —William Shakespeare A legacy that is made with honesty is much better that those made with distrust. Honesty is characteristic that is well respected by all of mankind. Legacies are built with truth are meant to stand the testament of time. The truth is capable of leading others for an indefinite amount of time. Take a look a history. There are many instances where large groups of people were led by those who told lies. They hid as propaganda rampantly spread. Their movements didn’t last long. That stark difference is evident when one takes a look at the liar’s counterpart. Truth progressed the “large group of people” into a population. Honesty is a “thing” that is easier said than done. It might seem hard at first to build a legacy made of honesty, but it becomes easier when you get it started by the little things. —Edward Huang Being a leader really require honestly. You have to be honest in order gain trust from people. If you can't even trust your teammates, then you don't deserve their trust. Trust is a invisible bond that connect people together. Without trust, a team wouldn't be a team. And without a team, there would be no leader. —Jing Tong Huang Legacy is what one's parents pass down to their child. In this quote, English Renaissance artist, William Shakespeare, is stating no matter how much money, title, and fame one's parents gives to their child or children, honesty is a trait that an individual must learn to grow on their own. Honesty is the key to success and trust. The characteristics may be overwhelming, but it is honesty that an individual can trust themselves and be trusted by others and nothing is as great and empowering as this. —Elaine Pun In life, nothing is better than honesty. You should always try to do good deeds and be honest in your life that way people can see you as a role model and remember you as one also. When you die you don't want to be remembered as a rich person but rather be remembered as a person that contributed something to the world, even as simple as not littering. Money and being rich is not important at all because these things are temporary. Your personality and the things you do is what matters. Therefore you should always try to do the right things. —Annie Zhang

INTERNATIONAL NEWS www.keyclub.org Click here for the Facebook Page Key Clubber Sarah Dewitz from Orlando, FL created her own charity: Just 1 Book after reading about a need for books in a nearby town. Her passion for this project began when she read about the nearby town of Bithlo, FL and its residents’ many needs. She started by asking her elementary to help her donate a book for each student at her school to the local community center. With the help of her friends, Sarah ended up donating 15,000 books. With Sarah’s impact, low income families throughout Central Florida have access to books, and her charity is expanding to New Jersey. Sarah was named Nickelodeon’s January Halo Award winner for her amazing work.
