KEY CLUB

LETTER FROM THE EDITOR

HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Time really flies—there is only one month left of summer vacation! I hope you all are enjoying your summer! If you haven’t been to any summer events yet, there are still a lot coming up in August! This would be a great way to get a head start on your points for the next service year! It’s always exciting to meet underclassmen members. I had the great pleasure of meeting quite a few new faces at summer events thus far, and it was wonderful getting to know some of you. You guys represent the future leaders of the club, and I hope to see more underclassmen members at events! I hope none of you feel discouraged because of the slow 2013-2014 service year (poor weather led to fewer events). Key Club has shaped me into the person I am today. I gained many great things as a Key Clubber: from new friends to leadership skills to new contacts with organizations, and much more. As always, articles and pictures for events are appreciated. Articles are not difficult to write and do not have to be lengthy, but anything that fulfills the guidelines (sent in an email awhile ago) will be accepted. I have lowered the amount of pictures that need to be sent for a +5 points bonus (+5pts/10photos). I am not expecting anyone to be professional writers and/or photographers, but any articles you write and any pictures you take are well appreciated! Thank you in advance! Keep up the good work and don’t let the rest of your summer go to waste! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

FRIENDSHIP WITH MIDWOOD July 10, 2014 Midwood Key Club President Liana Zinytche hosted a division event at Seth Low Playground, where she taught members how to make friendship bracelets. These bracelets will be sold to fundraise for one of Key Club’s major service projects, the ELIMINATE Project. Everyone had a blast getting to know each other and making the simple “candy-stripe” patterned bracelets!

LOZILU WOMEN’S MUD RUN

LoziLu is a great 5k festival filled with obstacles, music, mud, and an after party. This fun event is to help anyone suffering from cancer have a future of fun. It was a day full of entertainment because volunteers were able to witness female runners get muddy for such a great cause. Volunteers assisted with both setup and breakdown of the event, and also congratulated runners at the finish line with their medals. Many local vendors were also present, serving free food such as ENLIGHTENED ice cream! Check out the highlights and activities from the fun day!

BROOKLYN WALK NOW FOR AUTISM SPEAKS

Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are part of a group of a complex disorder of brain development. They are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. Autism Speaks is proud of their signature fundraising event which brings together hundreds of thousands of participants annually across the United States and Canada with a common goal of supporting Autism Speaks. Supported by volunteers and families with loved ones suffering from autism, this successful grassroots fundraising effort not only generates important funds for autism research, but also raises awareness about the increasing recurrence of autism and the need for increased research funding to fight this complex disorder.

PHOTO CREDITS: SANDY MUI Being a volunteer at the Autism walk was a challenging task and many people were heavily exhausted at the end. Nothing good in life comes easy and volunteering for the walk was tough, but I would say it was a rewarding experience because you formed a bond with your fellow Key Clubbers and people you have never met before. Setting up tables, chairs, and tents gave me a good arm workout on top of having time to talk to people since it was a multi-person job. By doing tasks that require you to work together as a whole, we created a setting that can benefit the future and seeing the smiles on the people who arrive was enough to keep me going for the day, give or take a couple of cookies they gave me when I was tired. An interesting thing to see, during a rest, was Prospect Park’s scenery. Since we were in the middle of the park, we got to see all the dogs and on one path there was even a mini waterfall. One of my favorite things when going to a Key Club event is seeing interesting sights and going to places I have never been to before. An interesting thing that happened was all the arts and crafts they made available to kids from pipecleaner bracelets to face painting. Many adults joined in the fun too. It was funny seeing a guy get his face painted and nails done to match with his daughter. I would happily be a volunteer next year and I hope to see more Key Clubbers there. —Jimmy Kong

QUOTE OF JULY

Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops that will commence in the Fall. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email).

This Month’s Focus: Definition of Leadership This Month’s Quote: “Effective leadership is not about making speeches or being liked; leadership is defined by results not attributes.” -Peter Drucker Email your response to editor.thetechkey@gmail.com for +5 points!
