LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? I hope you all had fun at Induction! I certainly had a blast and I would like to give a huge shoutout to the immediate past executive board for their hard work and dedication. I am so proud of them for making the 2013-2014 service year a great success, and I wish to work with my fellow executives to make the 2014-2015 service year an even greater success. I am really grateful for the immediate past executive board for awarding me 1st place for the Distinguished Brooklyn Tech Key Clubber Award! Thank you all—I will not forget you! We’ve had a lot of summer events so far, and we have many more coming up! I have been to all of them, and let me tell you, they have all been extremely fun! If you have not attended any of the June events—don’t worry, we have a lot more planned! Get a head start on your points for the next service year by attending them! Also, I would appreciate it if I received many more articles/pictures for events. Not only are you displaying your hard work and dedication to the community by writing articles, but you are also telling us (the execs) your feedback about the events. This is vital in determining whether we should participate in an event again. I hope that many more of you (the members) will submit articles/pictures for future events! Remember, even though school is over, it does not mean Key Club is over. Thank you all for reading and enjoy the rest of summer break! Happy summer! Yours in the spirit of service, Sandy Mui Bulletin Editor 2014-2015

ADVOCACY Carrie Zhao
I'm Carrie and I'm going into the new Gateway major. For the 20142015 year, I'm going to be your Advocacy Committee Head. I'm pretty meticulous, but don't worry guys, I'm just as easy-going! I enjoy reading and watching movies and dramas. To me, Key Club is a fun environment where you could be 'you' (with your friends) and help the community. Talk about killing two birds with one stone! Through Key Club, I hope to expand your volunteer opportunities beyond the boundaries of our community.

INTRODUCING THE EXECUTIVE CABINET 2014-2015
SCHOOL SERVICES Hi my name is Nabib Ahmed and I am your School Services Committee Head for the second consecutive year! I am a rising senior in the Chemical Engineering Major. My personal hobbies including watching Marvel/DC superhero movies, playing video game, and walking through parks. I view myself as hard working, dedicated, accessible, and creative. I have been in Key Club for three years and consider it like family. I have met so many new and awesome people and made great friends through the club. As a cabinet member, I intend to work with the executives to improve Key Club. As committee head, I hope to plan fun events for my members. I look forward to working with Key Club and can't wait for next year!!
Shusmita Roy
Nabib Ahmed
Hey Key Clubbers! I'm Shusmita Roy (Riya), one of the committee leaders of the School Services Committee for the 2014-2015 service year. I’m a rising senior in Gateway to Medicine Major. I have been in Key Club since my freshman year. Needless to say, the people in Key Club have become my extended family and I’m eager to see new faces in our family! I love food, books, jewelry, and free stuff! Some of my hobbies include reading, walking, reading manga, watching K dramas, and gardening. Key Club is the place where I made friends, where I want to be, where I learned to lead, where I want to and can contribute, where I’m not alone, and where I feel like I belong. I hope that the role of a School Services Committee leader would provide me with opportunities to supply service to my school and also to give me a way to extend my care for people connected to the school. I’m inspired by the Key Club spirit and I hope you guys will be too!

VISUAL MEDIA Crystal Choi
Hey Key Clubbers! I'm Jorge Robles and I'm a senior in the media major. I enjoy photography, gaming, anime, and playing musical instruments. I consider myself pretty friendly and relaxed - I won't bite! Visual media's going to be a blast next year, and my co-head Crystal Choi and I will try to make visual media the best committee of them all! Key Club, to me, is a place where I can participate in fun events with friends while advocating for a cause or helping out the community. What drew me closer to key club was being with my existing friends, and thanks to key club, I made even more friends. I'll be looking forward to seeing all of you in visual media next year!
08 CARING—OUR WAY OF LIFE
Hello Key Clubbers!! I’m Crystal Choi and I am a rising senior in the Chemical Engineering Major. I enjoy anything artsy crafty like drawing and making clay charms as well as reading books, sleeping, eating, and being a couch potato! I am creative, diligent, and friendly. As Committee Head of Visual Media I hope to make this committee fun and interactive with the help of my co-head Jorge Robles. Our goal is make it an awesome committee! Key Club was one of the first clubs I joined when I entered Brooklyn Tech. However it was unlike any other club I joined. Key Club provided me with a second family. I’ve met amazing people in this club and have become close friends with them. Key Club not only provided me with a second family but it also gave me the opportunity to give back to my community by volunteering at events. The best thing about Key Club is that I can help out my community while still being able to hang out with my friends!

FUNDRAISING Joanna Zhang
Hello! I am Joanna Zhang, the Fundraising Committee Head and a Senior-to-be in the Social Sciences Research major. With all of the formal introductions out of the way, I’d like to tell you guys a little about myself so you guys can know something about me. So, to start off, a few adjectives that would describe me would be quirky, over-thinker, organized, and talkative. I love having movie and TV show marathons, eating, sleeping, playing video games, reading books, and just going out to hang out. Just not fish markets, like the ones in Chinatown. Those are absolutely awful. But if I had to be there for Key Club, like for the Chinatown Beautification event, I would suck it up. Because Key Club has come to be more than just a way of getting club credits and volunteer hours. It’s a great club, in which you can learn how to break out of your comfort zone and meet new people, learn new things, and develop new social and leadership skills. I am glad I joined. So, I hope to really contribute this year as Committee Head. First, I simply wish to successfully fund the club so that the club can function. I would also like to fund different campaigns and organizations that we, as a club, can help and support them in order to make our community and world a better place. And lastly, to try and make it enjoyable for you guys, the most important people of the club.

RALLY AGAINST THE GARBAGE STATION
Assemblyman William Colton has hosted multiple rallies to protest the garbage station that the city plans to build at Gravesend Bay. The Solid Waste Management Plan is the city’s long-term vision to “equip the City with an equitable, environmentally sound, operationally efficient and cost-effective barge and rail-based solid waste transfer and export system.” If the garbage station is approved, then many carcinogenic chemicals will go into the ocean, killing fish and other marine life. This, in turn, would pose a health risk to residents. At this rally, the local coalition, called S.T.R.O.N.G., teamed up with Pledge 2 Protect, a group battling a similar proposal on the Upper East Side. Elected officials and community leaders from throughout the city spoke about their opposition against the garbage station and expressed their concerns for the environment.

At the end-of-year celebration, the 2013-2014 executive board and cabinet became retired, installing the 2014-2015 executive board and cabinet. We honored all of the accomplishments of the 20132014 service year and thanked the executive board for all their efforts, hard work and dedication to the club. ENNIS PARK STEWARDSHIP & COMPOST WINDROW BUILD
The Gowanus Canal Conservancy is an organization that serves as an environmental representative for the Gowanus Canal Watershed. Its vision is an open, clean and alive Gowanus Canal Watershed. The organization was created in the mid-late 1800s on the site of a former saltmarsh and creek and has seen its fair share of environmental issues. Tons of raw sewage waste, industrial waste products and polluted surface have been captured by the organization for years. At the event, members helped pull out weeds for many tree beds. One of the organization’s representatives, Bob, educated us about different plants and trees and other concerns about the environment. We finished weeding a total of 16 tree beds. A free BBQ lunch was provided at the end of the event!

AUTISM PROM
Autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and autism are part of a group of a complex disorder of brain development. They are characterized, in varying degrees, by difficulties in social interaction, verbal and nonverbal communication and repetitive behaviors. ASD can be related to intellectual disability, difficulties in motor coordination and attention and physical health issues such as sleep and gastrointestinal disturbances. ASD affects 2 million people in the U.S. and tens of millions throughout the world. As a part of the Division 9 Key Clubs of the New York District, we are also in Kiwanis’ Brooklyn Division. One of the Kiwanis Clubs in our division, “86th Street,” hosted a prom for autistic students. The prom was hosted at Sirico’s Caterers from 6:00PM—10:00PM and members who are party animals were needed. I was fortunate to attend the Autism Prom with the Midwood High School Key Club Chapter. It was a fun and amazing experience and I can't wait for next year's Autism Prom. So for those unfamiliar with this event, it's basically a prom where ordinary high school students dance and party with kids with autism to make them feel more normal and part of society. I find this idea quite brilliant in blending elements to create a fun and thoughtful event. My favorite part was dancing with the autistic kids and to much of my surprise, some of them were better dancers. I also liked meeting the members of Midwood Key Club such as Helen (Past District Secretary and LTG), Clifford (Current LTG), and the Midwood Key Club Executive Board and members. One of my most memorable experiences was when a member of Midwood Key Club came up to me thinking I was an autistic kid. And after a while, she realized that I was in fact the exact opposite. Her reaction was one that I will remember. Anyways, it was a lot of fun, the food was delicious, and I definitely look forward to attending next year. —-Nabib Ahmed

MARCH WITH NYC AVP IN MANHATTAN PRIDE
The New York City Anti-Violence Project empowers lesbians, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected communities and allies to end all forms of violence through organizing, educating, and supporting survivors through counseling and advocacy. AVP envisions a world in which all lesbian, gay, bisexual, transgender, queer, and HIV-affected people are safe, respected, and live free from violence. At the march, members showed their support for LGBTs. Members participated in activities including tossing free condoms at the crowd! Some of our members were even able to go on the float! All of us had a blast marching with other supporters and there was truly an array of vibrant colors! Shoutout to our adviser, Ms. Multari, for being our adult chaperone!

Each person attending brought food and drinks to share. Key Clubbers from different divisions were able to bond through icebreakers, games, and other fun activities! Our members had a blast playing volleyball and blasting each other with water! Everyone had a lot of fun meeting each other and enjoyed the food, shared their plans for the summer, and played volleyball. We look forward to having more events with Key Clubs of other divisions! QUOTE OF JUNE
Key Club is an international student-led organization which provides its members with opportunities to develop leadership. Leadership is an important quality to possess and is not an easy quality to achieve. To help develop your leadership skills, we will be holding monthly leadership workshops that will commence in the Fall. If you wish to attend these workshops, it will be in your best interest to respond to Quote of the Month! This column is where you can comment on your past leadership experiences (or anything, really) based on the given quote. We will be discussing each quote at the leadership workshops and at the end of the year, you will be able to reflect on your responses to these quotes and see how you have grown as a leader. Your responses may be featured in the next newsletter (if you don’t want your response shown publicly, mention that in the email).

QUOTE OF MAY RESPONSES
Last Month’s Focus: Experiences as a Leader Last Month’s Quote: “If your actions inspire others to dream more, learn more, do more, and become more, you are a leader.” -John Quincy Adams Words without action have no meaning. Saying what to do and doing it, are two different things. Actions are what counts. In my experience, leaders are someone that is a role model. The person must have done something possible to achieve. If you call Albert Einstein a leader, yes in the sense that he paved the way for more discoveries, no because you can’t rediscover relativity. During my time in the Key Club, I’ve learned that there are requirements for being a leader. Personally I’ve been the project captain for several events. I know how important it is to be a leader. If the leader doesn’t communicate, he isn’t a leader. If the leader doesn’t participate, he isn’t a leader. A strong leader is like a strong goalie in sports. Without one, you’ll lose the game, you’ll lose your edge. -Anonymous

PRESIDENT SHARON’S FAREWELL LETTER
Dear members, I joined Key Club in my freshman year, much like many of you. I joined with the sole intention of getting opportunities to do volunteer work, but along the way, I met some of my closest friends, connected with people from other schools, and learned a lot about leadership and character. Not too long ago I was the girl who shied away from overly enthusiastic upperclassmen. You know, the kind of people who want to get you to love something just as much as them. However, if it wasn't for people like Jim Chan (President 2011-2012), Holy Cheong (District Bulletin Editor 2012-2013), and many others, I wouldn't have gotten where I am today. Key Club is great for inspiring and cultivating leadership in its members while providing community service opportunities and building character. It also helped expose me to a variety of organizations and charities (Kiwanis Pediatric Trauma Center, US-Africa Children’s Fellowship, and Pennies for Patients to just name a few). I got to learn a lot about different diseases (ELIMINATE Project) while raising money for research, get involved in our New York City community (spreading compost at Tompkins Square Park), and walk six miles in support of the fight to find a cure for AIDS. It's amazing to look back on all I got to do through Key Club because it has been such a diverse learning experience for me. And so, I challenge you to take advantage of the possibilities and be more proactive in the club. Volunteer to be project captain, so you can be the leader of events. Suggest events to the executives. Apply for leadership positions. Go to divisionals to listen to what other clubs are doing and meet new people. Do something you haven't done before, like volunteer at a soup kitchen or paint playgrounds. Ask questions. Do your research about the club, organizations, and more. But don't stop there. Our organization's motto is "Caring-Our Way of Life." What does that mean to you? I hope you find causes you are especially passionate about and I hope your time in Key Club, however long, will have taught you something about leadership, character, and service. Thank you for allowing me to serve as your president and for joining us to serve our community. I wish you all the best of luck in your endeavors and hope that you will continue to make a difference. Be the change you wish to see in the world. Sincerely Yours in Service, Sharon Cai Key Club President 2013-2014 Key Club Bulletin Editor 2012-2013 BTHS Social Science Research Class of 2014
