LETTER FROM THE EDITOR
HEY BROOKLYN TECH KEY CLUBBERS, HOW DO YOU FEEL? Hello there! My name is Sandy Mui and I am your bulletin editor for the 2014-2015 service year. I am so excited to be working on the executive board and can’t wait to share all my ideas with you guys! I’ve been a member of Key Club since my freshman year, and it has always been something very special to me. If you recall from my election speech, I mentioned how I used to be very shy but after joining Key Club, I was able to open myself up to others. I am so grateful for all that Key Club has done for me because I participate in a ton of extracurricular activities. Four years ago, I would not have seen myself at this stage. So, what new ideas do I have in mind? If you guys look on the previous page, you’ll notice that this newsletter is quite longer than usual. The reason for this is because I added some new columns and fun & games. Be sure to check out Tangy Tangram, Quote of the Month, and Dear Exec! I hope you all have fun reading this newsletter and take part in the new columns! Lastly, I want to mention that Induction is on June 12! Induction is a really fun celebration to commemorate all of Key Club’s achievements from the past service year and to induct the new executive board and cabinet. I promise that it will be a blast! PRESIDENT: DAVID JIN Hey everyone! I'm David Jin, your president for the 2014-2015 service year! I'm a rising senior in the BioMedical Engineering Major (aka Gateway). A few of my hobbies are biking, piano, chess and spending time with friends. I'm loud, funny, charismatic and always cheerful. As your club president this year, I hope to have an awesome service year with lots of events and to try and help you all have the best experience you can. Key Club to me has always been a family, surrounded by lots of great personalities and the opportunity to learn alot about our community. I can't wait to get this service year started!
VICE PRESIDENT: JORGE LEMA Hello Brooklyn Tech Key Club! I'm your vice president elect for the 2014-2015 service year and a rising senior in the Law and Society major. My interests include exploring, acting, handball, traveling, and volunteering. I consider myself dedicated, focused, optimistic, and adventurous. As your vice president, I hope to bring about an even bigger and better service year to encourage all of you to participate in even more of our projects. To me, Key Club has been a family, a home, and a place to have fun while providing service and shaping our future leaders. I truly hope to work with all of you next year. See you soon!
SECRETARY: CYNTHIA JIANG Hello fellow members of Key Club! My name is Cynthia Jiang and I am your Secretary. I am a rising Sophomore and plan on going into the Software Engineering Major. Some of my interests/hobbies include swimming, playing piano, and computers. Key Club is a great part of my life. I have met many friendly faces and the people in Key Club are slowly becoming a part of my extended family. I am really plan on doing my best for all of you in the 2014-2015 service year!!

TREASURER: KATE WONG Hi, Key Clubbers! I’m Kate Wong, your Treasurer for the upcoming service year, from Law & Society major. I love to sing, write songs on my guitar, and practice Tae Kwon Do during my free time. I am responsible, open-minded, and observant. Key Club is a place where I can express my way of caring by giving back to my school and my community. As treasurer, I plan interesting and fun projects that will increase membership participation in the club’s fundraising process. I want to make Key Club a fun, enjoyable, and meaningful place to be. I’m really delighted to meeting and working with all the members in Key Club soon.
BULLETIN EDITOR: SANDY MUI Hi everyone! My name is Sandy Mui and I am your bulletin editor for the 2014-2015 service year. I am a rising senior in the Chemical Engineering Major. Some of my interests are NBA basketball, the Voice, and America’s got Talent. I am dedicated, hardworking, persistent, and kind. Key Club has always been a family to me because I have made some of my closest friends in the club. As bulletin editor, I plan on providing you with more updates on what the club is doing through newsletters and updating the bulletin boards on the 1st and 7th floors. WEBMASTER: CRYSTAL LIM Hello! My name is Crystal Lim, I am in the Social Science Research Major, and I am the webmaster for the new service year, 2014-2015. I am a paddler on a dragonboat team, DCH Racing. I am dedicated, caring, and weird. As webmaster, I would like to increase communication between the all of the members and the executive board. To me, Key Club is a second family and a home away from home.

HABITAT FOR HUMANITY
Habitat for Humanity is a non-profit organization that builds homes for families and individuals in need. Their mission is to put God’s love into action by bringing people to build homes, communities, and hope. Currently, there are nearly 2 billion people around the world who live in slum housing and more than 100 million who are homeless. Habitat helps by building or renovating simple, decent houses in partnership with those in need. Families left homeless by natural disasters, war, and civil unrest are also provided for by Habitat. Key Club assisted with repairs for Staten Island homes that were hit by Hurricane Sandy in 2012.

PLAYGROUND IMPROVEMENT PROJECT
The New York Junior League’s Playground Improvement Project (PIP) sets out to beautify and improve Tompkins Square Park. Volunteers create safe, beautiful, well-organized, educational play spaces for children and other members of the New York City community. PIP is a collaborative effort with the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation, corporate and community volunteers, neighborhood citizens, children and families. Volunteers help with gardening, landscaping, renovating, and making general improvements to Tompkins Square Park.

CHINATOWN EARTH DAY
Chinatown Earth Day is an event provided by a Business Improvement District (BID) in Chinatown. A BID is an organization formed by property and business owners to improve and maintain a commercial district. These services improve existing city services that are too costly to purchase individually. A BID’s goal is to consistently fund clean streets. Improving Chinatown attracts more visitors and more customers to local businesses, helps keep Chinatown competitive with adjacent neighborhoods and BIDs, and makes the neighborhood a better place to live, work and visit. So far, there are 65 BIDs that have been created in New York City. BIDs help provide marketing and special events, and advocate for a fair share of government services. To celebrate Earth Day 2014, volunteers gathered in Chinatown to clean up the streets, plant flowers, and more. “The Smells of Hard Work” “What a great day to volunteer,” I’ve heard some say. It really was a great day with highs in the high 60s. Chinatown’s B.I.D. (Business Improvement District) calls the Brooklyn Tech Key Club. Twenty-three volunteers, including myself, opted in. Our job was to help restore Chinatown’s dirty streets. We were broken up into two groups of ten, more or less. Starting at eleven o‘clock, people were asked to grab some dustpans and brooms. Each group, led by a mentor, was instructed to follow a specific path of cleaning the streets. It had just rained the other nights. As a result, much of the trash was swept into the streets. You would not believe the number of cigarette butts that we saw on that particular day. Although we could only find a few smokers here and there, most of the trash that we swept up were butts. To make matters worse, several puddles made it difficult for the cleaning to begin. There were some puddles as deep as three inches. “It’s just one big giant mess,” one student said. I couldn’t agree more. The water washed all the “juices” into the streets. Everything from coffee to pig blood was probably in the water. The water was just filthily murky. It wasn’t too long before we saw our first great pile of trash. One of the street vendors was planning to sell “I love NY” cups. Probably out of mistake, all the cups shattered on the street. Cleaning that up took some time. Not before long, it was time to go back to Chatham Square. Once there, we took a big group picture. There were other organizations there. There were the Red Cross and many other free-time volunteers. After that group photo, we were instructed to go home. —Edward Huang

NEIGHBORHOOD CLEANUP
Since August 2011, Assemblyman William Colton has been holding neighborhood cleanups around Bensonhurst and Gravesend as part of his “Speak Up & Clean-Up” campaign. These cleanup events are held not only to inspire people, but to educate them as well. By having these events, we help spread awareness about the importance of keeping our neighborhood clean. Right before Hurricane Sandy struck last year, volunteers helped clear drains and streets of leaves and other trash around Kings Highway between Stillwell Avenue and McDonald Avenue. Assemblyman Colton has reminded us time and time again that because of our efforts, these areas did not flood as much as others after Hurricane Sandy struck. At this particular cleanup, volunteers helped sweep up the streets in areas around 86th Street leading up to Caesar’s Bay.

AIDS WALK
AIDS Walk New York is an event by GMHC, the world’s first AIDS service organization. In 1986, GMHC was looking for new ways to further engage the public, media, and government to fight the rapidly growing AIDS epidemic. The first AIDS Walk New York was created by Craig R. Miller and his organization of activists, MZA Events. The 10-kilometer walkathon was designed to raise funds for GMHC, and to battle HIV/AIDS. The first AIDS Walk took place on May 18, 1986 at Lincoln Center’s Damrosch Park, Fordham University’s Robert Moses Plaza, and the streets of the Upper West Side. Today, the AIDS Walk takes place in Central Park. In its 28 years, AIDS Walk New York has inspired nearly 890,000 people to walk, and millions more to donate, fundraising more than $128 million in the fight. AIDS Walk New York is the largest single-day AIDS fundraising event in the world.
PHOTO CREDITS: VASYL ANTOSHCHUK AIDS stands for Acquired Immune Deficiency Syndrome. It is a disease in which there is severe loss of the body's cellular immunity. The AIDS walk experience was awesome. It was great to see how many people joined in the walk to show their support to cure aids. First, we had to go to an area to sign up with our team. Then, there was a starting line where the walk officially began. During the walk, there were checkpoints with snacks and drinks and a chance to rest briefly. Throughout the walk, I saw many sponsors including Ralph Lauren and Target. There were also people singing and cheering. The walk was extremely crowded and it was nearly impossible to move without running into someone. To provide further insight on the distance of the walk, we had to walk as far as Cathedral Parkway and then walk back. All in all, it was a great experience on a sunny and hot day. —Brian Ho

Dear Division 9 Beavers, Welcome to the New Service Year, 2014-2015. I am honored to serve as your next Lieutenant Governor and lead this division to new heights. I have to congratulate the division in its achievements, but lets not stop there. Let us continue to apply for District Awards and get honored by the District Board. Our Immediate Past Lieutenant Governor, Hifza Ahmed, left some great shoes to fill and I am ready. Next, I have noticed that members don’t exactly get to choose projects in their clubs. However, each and every Key Club Executive Board is open to hearing your ideas. Those Executive Boards plan and execute events. It is you the members that make this club the way it is. Is there something that we are not looking at? Are you passionate about anything? If yes, suggest it to me and we can make a divisional event or make an extended club event. Lastly, I would like to thank you all Presidents, Vice Presidents, Secretaries, Treasurers, Webmasters, Editors, and Advisors for a successful service year. Division 9 got involved by collecting donations to fight Multiple sclerosis and AIDS, and by participating in the walks.
DISTRICT NEWS www.nydkc.org Click here for the Facebook Group Eliminate Week was from May 5 to May 9! The Eliminate Project is one of Key Club’s District Projects. The Eliminate Project, Kiwanis International and UNICEF joined together to eliminate maternal and neonatal tetanus. Neonatal tetanus kills one baby every nine minutes. To eliminate MNT from the Earth, 129 million mothers and their future babies must be immunized. UNICEF and Kiwanis fundraise and work together to raise money to vaccinate these mothers and their babies. During Eliminate Week, Key Clubbers showed their support for the Eliminate Project by participating in different activities each day.

Over 2,000 students and advisors gather together to introduce new programs, present awards to outstanding clubs, conduct the organization’s business, attend educational workshops and elect international officers for the upcoming year. The 71st Annual Key Club International Convention will take place in Anaheim, CA from July 2 to July 6.
