Message From 2017 RASM President, Xena Vallone Wow, what a year 2017 was for our Association! I am so honored and proud to have served as your President, and I know 2018 is going to be even better. 2017 was a year of change for the Association. First, our longtime CEO, Kathy Roberts, retired and our new CEO, Jeff Arakelian, was brought in to replace her. We also hired a new Government Affairs Director, Max Brandow. Additionally, the RASM North office building in Lakewood Ranch was sold, and we are now under contract to build a new location in West Bradenton. With all those changes you would think we would not have had time to do much of anything else. However, this year proved to be a fabulous year for legislative issues brought to our state. We managed to get a slight reduction in the Business Rent Tax – the first ever after fighting for this for years. We were also able to get a cap on Estoppel Fees to $250 – this impacted many homeowners throughout the state, who were in some cases, being gouged by their homeowner/condo associations. In addition, we were able to secure funds for affordable housing initiatives. Our local RPAC had a banner year with approximately 44% participation from our members – up from 20.5% the year before. We also were 4th in the state for the number of dollars raised overall – beating out Tampa, Pinellas, Naples, Royal Palm Coast and Northeast Florida Associations. I want to personally thank each and every investor who helped accomplish this, from the $20.00 minimum investment to the top investment level of $5,000 from Clarke Toole. Our YPN committee rocked the house this year as well, with their very successful fundraisers such as Realtor Bowling and their Lip Sync Battle. Additionally, the Commercial Investment Division, YPN and RASM Gives Back program collectively donated $55,167 to various organizations across the two counties. 34
RASM Annual Report 2017
Our PAAC also was involved in interviewing candidates for the hotly contested City Council race, and two of the three candidates we supported won the election. The remaining committees did an outstanding job meeting or exceeding the goals set forth for them and I want to thank everyone personally for their service and dedication to making this a great Association. I leave you with the goal I had when I gave my installation speech…please reach out and ASK someone who is not involved with our Association to get involved. Keep asking. The long-term benefits of involvement in your association are huge. Not only do you make it a better place, but you also gain relationships with your peers and Business Partners, helping you succeed in your roles as Realtors®, Brokers, Managers, Property Managers, Commercial Practitioners and more. Once again, thank you for allowing me to serve as your 2107 President. It is something I will cherish forever. Make it a great 2018!

2017 CID Highlights 2017 has been an outstanding year for the RASM Commercial Investment Division (CID) under the leadership of President, Rico Boeras. This year, the CID added a brand new event to the calendar in February, Inaugural CID the Sporting Clays Tournament. It was a fun event, which raised $4,500 for the Boys & Girls Club of Sarasota County.
The CID 16th Annual Golf Tournament and fundraiser was also a HUGE success, raising $20,200 for the local charity, Harvest House! Harvest House is a wonderful organization that helps homeless individuals, single moms, and veterans. They also have a substance abuse program, and they are one of the largest private provider of this type of housing in the county. Altogether, the CID raised nearly $25,000 for charity in 2017!

$20,200
Grand total: $24,700
2017 was a year of fun events for the CID! At the end of September, the CID hosted a social event at the White Buffalo Saloon. It was an evening of networking, food, and free line dancing lessons for those that braved the dance floor! Additionally, the CID held their Annual Downtown Horizon’s Breakfast in September. The event sold out, and they had a great panel of developers and city officials to enlighten guests on the latest development in downtown Sarasota. This year’s panel was Jesse Biter, Kevin Daves, Steve Stancel and Steve Cover. The panel was a nice mix of two well-known and successful developers and two city officials. They discussed topics like density, traffic, the Sarasota Bayfront 2020, the old Quay site and much more. They also gave insight into what is planned for the downtown area in the future.
