Partnership was in the air at SAR and MAR in 2014 If you thought 2013 was a momentous year for the Sarasota Association of Realtors®- the move to a new headquarters building; celebration of the 90th anniversary of the trade association; the second highest year of property sales in SAR’s history; major advances in member professionalism; unprecedented member engagement and involvement; a new level of community governmental and civic interaction; then 2014 shouldn’t have surprised you! But the big news, of course, was a surprise to many - the historic agreement to merge with the Manatee Association of Realtors® and form a brand new, combined organization, named the Realtor® Association of Sarasota and Manatee (pending final CEO Kathy Roberts approval). The merger, which will take effect January 1, 2015, will combine the membership of both associations, which currently stands at around 5,250 Realtors® and 489 business partners. The time was right for this historic partnership, which had been discussed off and on for over a decade. The end result will be a stronger, more effective and more efficient organization, able to offer members top-notch products and services to help build your business. Of course, we will also continue to offer members a remarkable number of high-quality, valuable educational forums, which were well-attended by our members in 2014. See the amazing stats on Page 12. We will continue to provide important opportunities for our members to advocate for laws, programs and initiatives that support the real estate industry through RPAC (Realtor® Political Action Committee). We will continue to support the Commercial Investment Division, which achieved the goal of NAR accreditation in 2013, and will expand greatly with the addition of MAR members. We will expand our altruistic partnerships in our expanded community, with Habitat for Humanity and many other organizations. Thank you, SAR members and our new Manatee family, for making the dream of the merger come true in 2014 - our success is certainly your success, and we can’t wait for 2015! 2

We have a merger!

SAR members celebrate as the positive vote of both board memberships is announced, an historic moment indeed!

It took years of study, discussion, exploration, collaboration, and a final synergistic groundswell of support to gain approval for the merger of the Sarasota Association of Realtors® and the Manatee Association of Realtors®. The culmination of long-held dreams and aspirations came on Sept. 16, 2014, when both organizations held membership votes to determine their futures. “The overwhelming approval for the merger indicates that this is a move whose time has come,” said SAR President Peter Crowley. “Members understand that Sarasota and Manatee County operate as one market and that it makes sense to pool our resources. Our community can be proud of the forward-thinking action taken by Realtors® today.” The NAR-approved merger, which will officially take effect January 1, 2015, will combine the membership of both associations, which currently

www.sarasotarealtors.com

stands at around 5,250 Realtors® and 489 business partners. The current boards of directors of both associations will continue to serve through December 31, 2014. Then the new board will take their seats, led by new President Stafford Starcher. The initial steps have been taken, as the two associations worked together to create a strategic plan for 2015 (and beyond), prepared a budget for 2015, and appointed volunteers to serve on committees. We will also be creating a new logo and developing a new website. There is still a lot to do between now and January 1, 2015! That groundwork has already begun, and members of the new Realtor® Association of Sarasota and Manatee (pending final approval) will soon see the results. It’s certainly true - “We Are Stronger Together!”

Volunteers Rule

At SAR, participation makes it happen! “It is one of the most beautiful compensations of this life that no one can sincerely try to help another without helping himself.” _ Ralph Waldo Emerson Volunteerism makes trade associations like the Sarasota Association of Realtors® successful. Without committed, energized volunteers, our not-for-profit organization could not provide the services our members need and deserve. From our founding President Franklin P. Dean, to our current President Peter Crowley, SAR has been extremely fortunate to have had a wealth of talented, committed and energetic leaders at the helm, and thousands of volunteer committee members over the years to achieve the SAR mission - to advance members’ professionalism through delivery of education and resources while upholding the Realtors® Code of Ethics; and to be the leading advocate of real estate in the communities we serve by protecting private property rights and expanding relationships with individuals and organizations both locally and worldwide.

From left to right: Rebecca Dalton, Donna Hartzler, Bradley Anderson, Marianne LeBar, Ronda Banks, David Witte, Christine Green, David Consbruck, Joshua Morris, Stanley Heinlein, Cynthia Rogers, Marilyn Kneafsey, SAR President Peter Crowley, Manuel Lopez and Carrie Starr Rumery. Congratulations to our emerging leaders!

Encouraging Future Leaders The future of our real estate trade association is heavily dependent on recruitment and education of leaders. Understanding this reality, we have emphasized the importance of the SAR Leadership Academy for many years. Fresh faces, perspectives and experiences give an organization vitality, depth, enhanced professionalism, and the ability to make necessary changes, even when the “old guard” might find those changes uncomfortable or too far afield from the status quo. As we have been witness to and learned from in the past few years, the real estate industry is almost always in a state of flux. New technology, new tools and techniques, the ever-changing customer experience - all of this and more requires our industry to be nimble, innovative and

www.sarasotarealtors.com

adaptable. New blood in leadership roles helps make this possible. As we move into the new year, and into our new, merged organization, the role of leadership will become ever more important. We encourage our members to consider applying for positions in future Leadership Academy classes. It’s how we will continue to grow and prosper!
