Cattle Cattle Call Call -- February February 2016 2016
C
Association N ew s
From the SHA Office
Marilyn Charlton, General Manager
Welcome to 2016! I hope you had a wonderful holiday season with friends and family. Last year was a busy and successful year for the association. The province saw drier conditions in the spring and rain during harvest, which resulted in a less than abundant hay crop in many areas of the province. Good news is the livestock returns continue to be strong as consumer demand for protein increases. Breeder Directory 2016 We are still accepting ads for out 2016 breeder directory, with the deadline extended to February 29. If you are interested in placing an ad just give the SHA office a call at 306-842-6149. Advertising rates are as follows: Full Page Color $250.00 Half Page Color $175.00 Business Card Ad $50.00 All ads are subject to 5% GST. CWA Hereford Show 2015 The National Hereford Show held during Canadian Western Agribition last November was again a huge success. We saw an increase in our Hereford entries and the quality of the cattle on display was impressive. The show attracted exhibitors from across Canada and the United States. I want to extend a sincere thank to all of our sponsors and volunteers who have supported this show for many years. We are fortunate in our breed to have people willing to give of their time to help the association, not only at Agribition, but throughout the year - we appreciate it! Check out page 30 of this issue for a list of our sponsors and volunteers. Special thank you to JJ trucking, Arcola, Sk for sponsoring the reception after the show. Congratulations to Duncan Lees who received the CHA Honor Roll and to Bert Anderson for being presented with his 50 year membership pin from the Canadian Hereford Association. Both presentations were made during the National Show at Agribition.

Saskatchewan Juniors The Saskatchewan Junior Hereford Association held their annual meeting on January 17 at Regina, Sk. The meeting included elections of officers and planning events for the coming year. Full report of the meeting will be included on the website as well as in the June issue of Cattle Call. If you are interested in becoming involved with the junior association in our province give Karen McKim a call at 306-436-4616 or email her at rbdranch@live.ca.
Bonanza 2016 will be held at Olds, AB - August 9 - 13. If you are interested in more information check out the CHA website for more details.
January SHA Board Meeting The Saskatchewan Hereford Association will hold their board meeting on January 22 in conjunction with the Saskatchewan Beef Industry Conference at Saskatoon, Sk. This meeting will include a review of our 2015 fiscal year and approval of the 2016 budget. Also at the meeting, the board will be selecting the judge for the 2016 national show at CWA, drawing for the bull voucher and meeting with representatives from Agribition. Watch for a report of the meeting to be posted on the website. Wishing everyone a successful bull sale season!

National Check-Off Agency Appoints New General Manager The Canadian Beef Cattle Research, Market Development and Promotion Agency (the Agency, currently operating as Canada Beef) is pleased to announce the appointment of Melinda German as the new Agency General Manager. German will join the Agency after serving two years as General Manager of the Manitoba Beef Producers, and previously as Director of the Livestock Knowledge Centre for Manitoba Agriculture, Food and Rural Development. “We are very excited to have Melinda as a part of our team,” said Jack Hextall, Chair of the Agency. “Her industry experience, education and desire to move the industry forward will be invaluable.” Under the direction of the Board of Directors, German’s role will be exciting and challenging, ensuring transparency and accountability around the National Check-Off. She will work closely with funders, including importers, exporters, and cattle producers, as well as with provincial and federal stakeholders, and be accountable for organizational performance and alignment with activities under the purview of the Farm Products Agencies Act. German is expected to join the team at the Calgary office by March 1 st, 2016.
by separate divisions. The new structure was developed by the Board of Directors, in consultation with provincial funder groups to ensure continued transparency and prudent management of the National Check-Off. For more information on the restructuring of the Agency, please refer to the Branding Iron – Winter 2015 Edition. The national check-off is a mandatory levy of $1 per head collected from cattle producers when they market their cattle by provincial organizations, using their existing collection systems involving auction markets, order buyers, brand inspectors and others who handle cattle sales. It is collected across Canada to fund research and marketing activities on behalf of the entire industry. The goal of the national check-off is twofold – to increase sales of domestic and export beef and to find better and more efficient methods of producing beef and beef cattle. The national check-off is a critical source of revenue to fund initiatives that will advance the industry and build strong markets for Canadian cattle and beef.
“This is an excellent opportunity for me to work at a national level and continue to serve beef producers,” said German. “This will be an interesting and multi-faceted position but most important to me is that I can continue to work in the best interests of Canadian producers and the industry at-large.” This position is new for the Agency, and begins a period of transition where the three main functions, check-off management, marketing, and research, will be managed

Inaugural Canadian Beef Industry Conference set for August 9 – 11, 2016 Canada’s beef cattle industry has joined forces to create a one-of-a-kind industry experience for participants from across all regions and sectors of the national value chain: the Canadian Beef Industry Conference (CBIC). The first beef industry event of its kind in Canada, the CBIC will be held August 9 – 11, 2016 at the Grey Eagle Resort and Casino in Calgary, Alberta. The CBIC is a joint collaboration by the Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC), Canada Beef, the Canadian Beef Breeds Council (CBBC) and the Canadian Cattlemen’s Association (CCA). “This is the first event of its kind in Canada and we are very excited to bring Canada’s beef industry together,” said beef producer Rob Smith, also Canadian Angus Association Chief Executive Officer and co-chair of the 2016 CBIC. “The recently-established National Beef Strategy has four pillars, one of which is connectivity. This conference will allow everyone from industry leaders to smaller-scale producers to come together and help grow our industry.”
Organizers are planning a unique lineup of events to draw industry stakeholders from across Canada, with the intention to rotate the CBIC’s location in subsequent years. “We are excited to bring Canada’s beef industry together under one roof,” said Virgil Lowe, co-chair of the 2016 CBIC, a beef producer and an Associate with Dentons Canada LLP. “No matter where you live or what your role is in our industry, this one-of-a-kind national event will be worth the trip.” Additional details including specific session topics will be available closer to the event date. Registration is expected to commence March 1st, 2016. Those interested are encouraged to watch www.canadianbeefindustryconference.com and to follow the CBIC on Twitter and Facebook for updates. For further information, contact: Allison Jacoby, CBIC 2016 Event Manager C: 403-512-8146 E: info@canadianbeefindustryconference.com
This conference will combine semi-annual and annual meetings of several stakeholder groups, along with learning and networking opportunities to create a one-ofa-kind experience for participants from across all the various regions and sectors of the Canadian beef industry. The CBIC 2016 program will include: • Keynote speakers on each of the National Beef Strategy’s four pillars: connectivity, productivity, beef demand and competitiveness; • Educational presentations for producers and interactive workshops on applicable production innovations; • Networking with stakeholders in all stages of the beef supply chain, including the Canadian Cattlemen’s Foundation Classic Golf Tournament; • Market outlook and brand opportunities with the Canfax and Canada Beef forums; • BCRC, Canada Beef, CCA and Young Cattlemen’s Council board meetings; • Cattlemen’s Young Leaders selections and graduation. Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch Donates “Pick of the 2015 Heifer Calves” in support of the Keith Gilmore Foundation (KGF).
An exciting opportunity for Hereford breeders presented itself during the 2015 Southern Alberta Hereford Tour this fall, when Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch offered up the “Pick of their 2015 Heifer Crop”. Jim Sutton purchased the “Pick” for $12,500. All proceeds from the donation were directed to the “Future of the Breed” scholarship program administered through the KGF. Bar Pipe Herefords have a 60 year reputation of producing top quality Hereford genetics that meet the needs of today’s cattle industry. With a strong commitment to breed improvement and performance, Bar Pipe Herefords excel on the ranch, feedlot and show pen. Congratulations to Jim Sutton on his purchase, of this yet to be chosen female and many thanks to the Cross Family of Bar Pipe Hereford Ranch for their generous donation. The Keith Gilmore Foundation is a non-profit organization established in 1987, dedicated to supporting youth in agriculture and beef industry research. Eight scholarships totalling $21,500.00 were presented to young achievers in the agricultural community in 2015.
Special Donation Lot sells at the Canadian Western Agribition Hereford Sale
The chance to buy pick of the herd flush from Blair’s.Ag offers many opportunities. There are some big time power cows that are maternal gems; the hardest part will be narrowing the pick to just one cow. This flush has the possibilities to set a program in a positive direction for years to come. There are daughters of the great Nellie cow and NJW 73S. NCX Polled Herefords, Dennis and Andrea Babiuk of Brosseau, Alberta purchased the lot for $7500. The Keith Gilmore Foundation extends a special thank you to Blair’s.AG for the generous donation and to T Bar C Cattle Co., Sales Management for including this special opportunity at the Hereford Sale during Agribition. “All proceeds from this lot will go to the Keith Gilmore Foundation for use in its core activities of supporting Cattle CattleCall Call--February February 2016 2016

Fee Changes for 2016
Following the December 2015 CHA Board of Directors Meeting there will be two fee changes, as follows: Embryo Calf DNA Testing: The $15 subsidy for these ET calves has been removed, meaning that ET calves will be DNA tested at the regular rate of $40/parentage and abnormality test. THE Fees: After over 10 years without any increases, the THE fees for 2016 enrolment will be $6/cow. In 2016 the CHA will be running 6 EPD evaluations to provide newly calculated EPDs for breeders to market cattle. Running 6 EPD runs per year will also provide much quicker turn around on getting GE-EPDs on cattle if you are using genomics evaluations in your program. The increase in cost to the THE enrolment fee offsets the increase in cost for the additional evaluations in 2016. Five-Generation Pedigree: Access to 5 Generation Pedigrees will be free of charge going forward through your online log-in account. (If you don’t already have a password, contact val@hereford.ca.) If a breeder requests that the CHA print and mail out a five-generation pedigree the cost will remain $10.00. These changes will be reflected on the new 2016 Fee Schedule effective January 1, 2016. NEW for 2016 – EPDS will be calculated 6 times per year.
NEW EPDs have been released! We are pleased to announce that the new Spring 2016 EPDs have been released and are now available on the Animal Inquiry pages of the website. For new EPD averages, please see the Performance section of our website Performance Program and for more details, see the Tools & Trends Spring 2016 document.

SSGA Awarded Funding to Lead Wildlife Habitat Conservation Project The Saskatchewan Stock Growers Association (SSGA) is pleased to announce they have received $2.58 million from Environment and Climate Change Canada to lead a voluntary, producer-driven project to conserve habitat for species at risk in Saskatchewan. The Species at Risk Partnership on Agricultural Lands (SARPAL) fund supports projects that engage the agricultural sector in preserving key wildlife habitat. Potential initiatives through this project are designed to fit landowners’ unique circumstances, and will include new and inventive conservation strategies that meet the needs of producers and habitat. The work will take place over five years in southwestern Saskatchewan, in areas covered by the South of the Divide Conservation Action Program (SODCAP Inc.), who will also be involved in the delivery of the pilots. “Agricultural producers are key partners in our ongoing efforts to protect and recover species at risk," said The Honourable Catherine McKenna, Minister of Environment and Climate Change Canada. "With this fund, we're supporting the many Canadian ranchers and farmers using land stewardship practices that benefit wildlife. We also look forward to continuing our work, with all stakeholders, on innovative solutions that conserve species at risk across Canada.”” “We’re glad to take the lead on this,” says SSGA president Doug Gillespie. “Most of Saskatchewan’s remaining native grass prairie is on privately-managed ranchland. Stewardship is a core value of the SSGA and our members are in the best position to protect habitat for species at risk.” Landowners face a variety of circumstances in how they balance production with conservation, Gillespie says, and they need appropriate and adaptable options to suit their requirements. The SSGA’s proposal includes some innovative ideas – like habitat restoration, results-based conservation agreements, and grass banking – as well as money for fencing and other infrastructure that will protect the land and the water. 34 Page 34
N
“Ranchers, livestock and species at risk can co-exist, and they have been for generations,” says Tom Harrison, Executive Director of SODCAP Inc., a grass-roots organization who has been delivering programming in the target area. “We look forward to assisting SSGA with the development and delivery of these voluntary agreements,” Harrison explains, and adds that the conservation tools and strategies utilized will be new to Saskatchewan, and in many cases, Canada. “SARPAL is the right approach,” Gillespie said. “Regulations and fines don’t make sense when the ranching industry has voluntarily protected this habitat all along. Given the right tools, we’ll be able to do what’s best to support biodiversity on the land.” For more information, contact: Chad MacPherson, General Manager, SSGA at 306-757-8523 ssga@sasktel.net For program delivery information, contact: Tom Harrison, Executive Director, SODCAP Inc. at 306-530-1385 ed@sodcap.com

New research clarifies Canadian beef producers’ true environmental footprint Canada’s beef industry continues to improve efficiencies that lessen its environmental impacts, with production of one kilogram of Canadian beef creating 15% fewer greenhouse gas emissions in 2011 compared to 1981, a new study has found. Continual improvements in production and feed efficiencies, crop yields and management strategies, resulting in reduced emissions and resource requirements, were largely responsible for the significant decrease in environmental impact, according to the first results of a comprehensive five-year (2013-2018) study examining the Canadian beef industry’s environmental footprint. Conducted by researchers at the University of Manitoba, Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada (AAFC) Lethbridge and Environment Canada, the study found that there has been a 15% decrease in methane, 16% decrease in nitrous dioxide and 13% decrease in carbon dioxide from beef production in Canada over the recent 30 year period. Comparing the same time periods, it took 29% fewer cattle in the breeding herd and 24% less land to produce the same amount of beef1. This study explored the entire production system – from cow-calf to feedlot. Future phases of the study will assess the impact of Canadian beef production in areas such as water use, biodiversity and provision of ecosystems services. “We’re working to get a more accurate assessment of the Canadian beef industry’s environmental footprint and these results indicate that the footprint per kilogram of beef produced is getting smaller,” said Dr. Tim McAllister, a research scientist at AAFC Lethbridge and one of the study’s principal investigators. “The decreased emissions and reduced resource requirements to produce beef over the past few decades, due in part to enhanced production and feed efficiencies, crop yields and management practices, wouldn’t have happened if it weren’t for investments in research and development, and the industry’s ability to adopt those technologies,” he explained. Dr. McAllister is a world-renowned scientist. He works with the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations on the procedures used to develop these estimates, and has served on the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change. The environmental impact of livestock production has been Cattle CattleCall Call--February February 2016 2016
a contentious topic for some time, and greenhouse gases and resource use have been at the forefront of this environmental debate. For the Canadian beef industry, with over 68,500 beef farms contributing $35 billion worth of goods and sales to the economy, clarity on this topic is important. “Unfortunately, perceived concerns of negative environmental impacts of beef often overshadow the beneficial impacts of the beef industry,” noted Tim Oleksyn, a cow-calf producer from Shellbrook, SK and Chair of the Beef Cattle Research Council. “Beef producers are inherently motivated to be more efficient, which most often has social, economic and environmental benefits. Now that we have resource use and GHG emission benchmarks, we can move forward as an industry and more strategically target our efforts to improve.” Canada’s beef industry currently accounts for 3.6% of Canada’s greenhouse gas production and 0.072% of global greenhouse gas production 2. At the same time, lands that grow grasses and legumes for cattle sequester carbon, thereby reducing GHGs. The results of this study speak to the industry’s commitment to continuous improvement and sustainability. It will also provide important historical information to the environmental component of the Canadian Roundtable for Sustainable Beef (CRSB)’s first-ever National Beef Sustainability Assessment. The CRSB sustainability assessment will benchmark the industry’s social, economic and environmental impact using 2013 as the baseline. The assessment will be revisited, and progress evaluated, every five years. Results from the remaining phases of the industry environmental footprint study, including water use, biodiversity and provision of ecosystems services, are expected in 2018. The study is funded by the Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster. The Beef Cattle Research Council (BCRC) funds leading-edge research to advance the Canadian beef industry. It manages Canada’s Beef Cattle Industry Science Cluster. The Cluster is funded by the industry’s National Check-Off and Agriculture and Agri-Food Canada with additional contributions from provincial beef industry groups and governments.
