editor’s note

I write this note whilst sat in a pub garden in the beautiful village of Burnham Market in Norfolk on my one year wedding anniversary weekend away. This past year has gone so fast and it’s amazing to think that I’ve been married for a whole year - it just makes me want to do it all over again. So, a word of advice to all you brides out there .... although it may be stressful and challenging at times, enjoy every second of your wedding planning days as you’ll never get them back again!

Anyway, enough of the rambling .... there’s lots to get excited about in this summer issue of Save the Date – namely, the gorgeous photo shoots we’ve featured. We got so excited about them all that we just couldn’t choose which to write about and so we chose all three - It’s raining men, the engagement picnic shoot and something a little different .... we hope you enjoy!

We’ve also got a run down on the Wedding Event with a Difference on pages 30-31. Tickets are now on sale and we are very pleased to say, selling like hot cakes! Totally old news now, we know, but we could not go without mentioning the amazing Royal Wedding. Wow, what a day.

here's our verdict: The dress - Just stunning and totally elegant, just like Kate. Lace is a winner every time!

Kate's hair - We were so pleased she wore it down - such gorgeous, flowing locks. More brides should wear their hair down!

Wills - What a handsome groom. He looked amazing and so did Harry.

Pippa - OMG - what a figure. Floor length bridesmaid dresses are the way forward.

The cute bridesmaids/pageboys - The most well behaved children and their beautiful bridesmaid dresses reportedly made by an East Midlands based designer! Yay :-) The flowers - The only area we weren't overly impressed with although we liked the idea of flowers in the bridesmaids hair.

The service - Very sweet and not too drawn out. Neither of them seem fazed at all and Kate made that walk up the aisle seem SO easy!

The vintage car - Our favourite bit. So down to earth and totally represents what a cool couple they are.

Everything else - Far too much to keep rambling on about but we'd have loved to have seen the first dance to Ellie Goulding, fab song choice!

We loved the big day and hope you managed to get some inspiration for yours too!

It has been a busy start to the year for Vintage English; Michelle Chapman, founder and the inspiration behind the company, has not caught her breath. with Elen Studio Photography

We are delighted to introduce one of Save the Date Magazine’s most recent discoveries - Elen Studio Photography.

A true perfectionist and fabulous photographer, you only have to look at Elena's images to know that she is about real quality.

So, we caught up with the lady from behind the lens to find out a little more...

So Elena, firstly, what made you decide to become a wedding photographer?

I always liked to work with people therefore I started my photography career from portrait shoot. One day I was asked to shoot a wedding and I found it so exciting. It’s really amazing to capture the feelings when people are in love.

Since then it became my profession and I am now a full time wedding photographer.

How would you describe your style?

My style is for people who look for something creative and different. Shooting in a contemporary style which combines artistic portraits and reportage photography means that I capture natural emotions and the atmosphere of the big day.

Even years later, looking through the photos, my couples feel the same emotions and recall all details of their wedding day.

What do you love most about being involved in weddings?

I love everything: details, emotions, beauty of the bride, feelings of the bride and groom...

Every couple is different, so is places and countries where I shoot (UK, Czech Republic, France, Cuba etc) – all these things inspire me to create something new and unique for the bride and groom. This is really great.

If you had to sum up yourself in three words, what would they be?

Creative, Friendly and Responsible What do you feel is the key ingredient to being a successful wedding photographer?

I think it is important to be open to people, be passionate about photography, to develop your own style and be progressive.

it's raining men We at Save the Date magazine love a good photo shoot and this was one came as a refreshing change. The fabulously talented Chloe from www. adorebychloe.co.uk styled the shoot and here tells us all about it...

"In an industry full of chiffon, sparkle and general prettiness sometimes the guys don't get enough attention. We thought it was time to do a photo shoot focusing 100% on styling up a groom and two ushers.

So my A-team of wedding suppliers worked on two different looks; a traditional suit with a twist and a modern classic. We then went out on the streets of Nottingham, braved the wind and the rain and Butterworth Photography {www. butterworthphotography.co.uk} worked their magic!

All of the suits are from TLC Formal Hire {www.formalhirebytlc.co.uk} and our button holes are by Tineke Floral Design {www.tinekefloraldesign. co.uk}. The fab Simon Tuckwell from Sutherland and Barnett {www. sutherlandbarnett.co.uk} also did his best to style up the models short hair!

I style lots of photo shoots but this one was a welcome change, it also only took a quarter of the time it usually takes to get the models ready, good work guys!"

Derbyshire based wedding dress designer Jackie Thompson talks to Save the Date Magazine about turning that dream dress into a beautiful reality...

Jackie, tell us what kind of style or looks inspire you when designing wedding dresses?

My favourite “looks” are those so stylishly created by Audrey Hepburn, Grace Kelly and Dior’s New Look. The designers that inspire me most are Vera Wang, I love her classic simplicity and Vivienne Westwood for her daring quirkiness.

How does it work when a bride knows what kind of style they are looking for in their head and need you to turn their dream into a reality: Well, we have a chat and look at pictures of dresses, not necessarily wedding dresses to find styles and colours the bride likes. Sketches are then made of “the dress” and agreed with the Bride. Measurements are taken, patterns drafted and cut and then a toile or “mock up” dress is made in calico. The toile is tried on by the bride to check shape and fit, when everyone is happy the dress is made in its final fabric, usually silk, and decoration/embellishment added if appropriate.

How long does it usually take to create a completely bespoke wedding dress from scratch?

It depends on the style and how much decoration is required, on average a dress takes between 40 and 50 hours. Ideally the initial consultation should be about six months before the wedding day.

Is it just bespoke you do or do you have a collection of designs which brides can choose from?

I particularly enjoy making and decorating corsets and I am putting together a ‘Ready to Wear’ collection suitable for either bridal or evening wear, to compliment the corsets we have a collection of skirts styles that can be made to match or co-ordinate. “Like” Jackie Thompson Couture on Facebook to be the first to see the launch of this collection, you might even want to put one on your Christmas List!

What do you love most about being a wedding dress designer?

I love designing, I love creating, I love sewing, I love my clients.

This has to be one of the most fabulously styled shoots we have ever clapped eyes on so we just had to share .... once again, Chloe (www.adorebychloe.co.uk) has worked her magic and created a beautiful English Rose style engagement shoot. Just gorgeous. And here is Chloe to tell us who, what and where!

"Jenny and Andy are such a lovely couple, they get married in September and hired me to style their engagement shoot a few weeks ago. It took minutes of chatting to Jenny to realise she loves the 50's and even named her company (Hepburn PR) after one of her style icons. By coffee number two we hadn't shut up about our beloved dogs and her eyes lit up at the suggestion of bringing them along to the shoot to capture their little family!

So a few weeks later on a gloriously sunny day we arrived at Cockliffe House for a romantic picnic... plus a stylist, two photographers, a videographer and a chauffeur but hey! We honestly could have been at a beautiful French chateux, it was the perfect setting for the day :) Whilst I set to work on the picnic, my fabulous hair and make-up team transformed Jenny into a 1950's beauty and Andy fell in love (again) with our vintage car... a classic blue Daimler called 'Charlotte'! Then the Butterworths (photographers) and Richard from Parkin Arts (videographer) set to work on capturing the love between these two..." All we can say is WOW and please can we have a 1950’s styled picnic shot with such perfection!? How very cool.

We love it when we get images from a photo shoot which land in our inbox and literally make our jaw drop to the floor. Well, when these amazing images came through courtesy of the lovely Rachael Connerton, they did just that and we had to share with you lovely lot. It just goes to show that when you mix a gorgeous couple with fabulous styling and a creative, highly talented photographer, the result is just stunning.

“As a wedding photographer, I always enjoy looking at photography from a range of different perspectives. I’ve been following the work of a fantastic photographer based over in the States for quite a few

years now, so imagine our excitement when we heard she was coming over to the UK and was planning to run a seminar too!

We jumped at the chance of meeting Jessica Claire and spent an amazing day, firstly listening to her talk on all things wedding photography in California (where she’s based) and then went out on location for a brilliant sixties inspired ‘group shoot’.

Becca and Neil were an absolutely lovely couple, clearly head over heels for each other and so much fun; the beautifully styled set was absolutely perfect for them and we didn’t even let the rain didn’t stop us!

We both strongly believe in the principle of never stop learning and it was so inspiring to work alongside a non-UK photographer. It was great to shoot something a little bit different and we both came away absolutely fizzing with ideas!”

The idea of a wedding for us is the two of us surrounded by close family and friends in a location we love. We knew 2011 would be the year we would get married and after working with the lovely team at Blackbrook House for some of the fabulousplaces.co.uk events we decided to make it the venue for our special day. Our ceremony was also held at Blackbrook, which made the day flow perfectly and our guests could relax.

It was important that the day was relaxed and just the way we wanted it to be, with the emphasis being on the great food and making sure our family and friends had a wonderful time and felt they were an important part of the day too. We had a small wedding with 23 guests, which made it feel like a lovely gathering of all our closest friends and family. We really couldn’t have wished for a better day.

The venue was an important decision for us, but an easy one…

Blackbrook House have the most amazing Chef and everything they do is given a personal touch. I knew what I wanted, but they also made suggestions for things I hadn’t considered, which worked really well and made our day incredibly special.

Our cake was amazing and has caused quite a stir! Jo from The Icing On The Cake was recommended by a friend and after viewing Jo’s creations on her Flickr page we knew we didn’t need to look any further…we only hoped Jo could fit us in! We went for a birdcage design after Jo showed us a photo of a similar cake she had seen. The filling for the cake

was sponge with a lemon filling and a delicate elderflower cream. The cake was stunning and better than we could have ever imagined.

The theme for the wedding was English country garden, with soft pastel colours and beautiful flowers. The stationery was themed around the birdcage cake and each guest received their own menu with food choices.

The idea of booking a date 18 months in advance was always something I wanted to avoid…time to prepare is important, but too much time can bring its own stress.

We had 3 months to plan our wedding… this was from the point we had booked Blackbrook House. I knew the type of flowers I wanted, accessories and the food was an easy decision - a short chat with Lavinia from Blackbrook House and we decided on a delicious three course meal with cocktails and canapés for after the ceremony.

The day started perfectly…a pedicure for me, while David was out having a relaxing walk in the fields with our two dogs. I arrived at Blackbrook a few hours before the ceremony where I had a drink and relaxed before starting to get ready. We were amazed by the weather, it was a glorious day with not a cloud in the sky.

Guests enjoyed the terrace with a mojito while we had our photos taken by the lovely Becki from Red Square Photography.

Our flowers were from Tineke Floral Designs in Matlock. Kerry produced some absolutely gorgeous arrangements for our table. I’ve always loved peonies, hydrangeas and vintage style roses. The flowers were gorgeous and gave our table the perfect touch. I loved my bouquet, it was amazing and gave me the ideal opportunity to keep my dad’s watch with me throughout the day.

My dad passed away when I was 23 so having his watched wrapped around my bouquet was very special.

Our ceremony was held at 1.30pm, followed by soaking up the sunshine on the terrace and then a delicious meal. We travelled to London by train later that evening where we stayed overnight before heading to Paris on the Eurostar for our honeymoon on the Saturday morning.

Looking back at our photos makes us want to do it all again, it was perfect and exactly how we hoped it was going to be.
