As I write this note, the snow outside is pretty deep and the heater is on full. I was at a wedding at the weekend during which the snow literally fell from the sky. Great for the lovely setting and wintry backdrop - not so great when the band can’t make it. It made me realise that when planning a winter wedding, contingencies must always be in place; better safe than sorry! Anyway, we’re headed towards the spring now and most importantly, our event on 22nd April, taking place in Nottingham. If you haven’t already done so, you can get your tickets here - www.savethedateevent.co.uk. It is going to be amazing, we can’t wait. And this issue of the magazine has had one hell of a facelift. What do you think? We LOVE it and hope you do too. Don’t forget, the next magazine is due out in May but don’t be a stranger until then, visit our site www.savethedatemagazine.co.uk for regular blogs and wedding gossip. SWEET PETIT
Exploring how to bring your wedding to life with a splash of retro, by Gemma Morgan, owner of Wedding of my Dreams.
Set up a sweetie buffet. Fill glass jars with retro sweets and let your guests enjoy helping themselves to pick n mix after desert. Watch the adults turn back into kids as they scoop sweets into their striped sweetie bags. Great if you’re having kids at your wedding. Add finishing touches to your sweetie buffet by using personalised labels on the jars and hang paper pom poms over head.

Go Dotty Polka dot bunting looks fab and adds immediate impact. Drape it around the garden or throughout the marquee.
centre of attention For table centres collect old milk bottles or jam jars, tie ribbon around them and fill with flowers or get your hands on some of these retro Kellogg’s milk bottles.
Continue the polka dot theme and use bright spotty or striped material as table runners to bring a splash of colour to the guest tables. Add red polka dot tape to jazz up your favour boxes and menu cards. Or you could give each guest an individual jam favour.
Don’t stop at sweets You don’t have to stop at sweets; popcorn makes a great retro snack too. Add cinema style buckets of popcorn on your sweetie table or hire the wonderful Ice Angels to serve mini trays of popcorn or ice cream to your guests. Think interval time at the theatre. Serve drinks with bright coloured or striped straws, and serve your guests your signature cocktail... for example, Caroline’s Cosmopolitans and Mark’s Martinis!

When Sally Ann met... Capturing the honesty of a true romance, where no one gets to miss the special day
Sally Ann, joint founder of the amazing Hummingbird Cards (fabulous wedding stationery) married her Dan on 10th September 2011 at a beautiful church in Appleby Magna, Derbyshire before holding a Garden Party style reception in the grounds of her gorgeous home. Here’s Sally Ann to tell us some more: “Our church is a very special place, that’s close to my heart and holds some lovely treasured memories for me with my grandparents; it’s also where my Mum and Dad got married.

We had our reception at home! We wanted something very personal and so a ‘Garden Party’ style wedding seemed perfect, we just had to keep our fingers crossed for some sun. I also dreamt of having an old fete style tent or marquee. We wanted to have a really relaxed style reception, with all my vintage touches, where friends and family could just chill, like a Sunday afternoon tea party. It took ages to find the perfect tent, which was the right size and had the look, but we eventually found one and it was adorable. The theme just had to be a Vintage Style Garden Party! We’d decided on the old style tent and then we thought it would be lovely for the little ones to have their own tent too to play in, so we found a little old fishing tent that was just perfect for them!
I designed the invites with lots of elements that were personal to us, trees creating a heart shape, our initials subtly linked and carved into a tree trunk, bunting, tea cups ad teapots stacked – very Alice in Wonderland and of course little Hummingbird Birds. I really wanted lots of vintage porcelain tea cups and cake stands for the tables so a year before the big day Dan and I started to hunt out and collect. We went everywhere from Newark antiques fair, car boot sales, charity and junk shops. We had so much fun, and now I’m addicted to collecting. If anyone wants to rent some beautiful china – we have loads!!! The tables were covered with old hand embroidered table cloths, everyone had a vintage teacup, and table linen was rolled Save The Date | Issue Twelve

and tied with a mini luggage style label as a place setting that I added calligraphy to, with a stem of lavender. The table names were all our grandparents’ names as none of them were there to share the day. The marquee was hung with Hummingbird bunting of course and lots of old bauble fairy lights! We had a table plan tree which turned into a memory tree at night, and when we came home from our honeymoon it was lovely to read everyone’s messages. We also had old fashioned sweetie jars filled with sweets and lollies for all the kids, but I must say I do remember seeing quite a few adults with sherbet lollies too! They were in our wooden summer house that we turned into a little bar at night. We work with a beautiful wedding dress boutique in Ashby-de-la-Zouch called La Maree. I’d seen the picture in her boutique and just loved it, never knowing that I would eventually be able to try it on. It was so beautiful. So my first and last stop was there. I went with my Mum to try a few, and lovely Sanj had got the dress in for me! I did try on a few but I just knew that dress and I were destined to walk up the aisle together! It had a vintage feel; a stunning back for when
you’re stood in church and the open work lace was just so unusual. We designed our own invites and had them laser cut. I just love manila paper so they were kept very simple in ivory and manila card. I also made the little bridesmaid dresses. There’s a great fabric stall that sells lots of beautiful Indian silks in the Nottingham market and I found just the perfect blush shade raw silk there. Mum made our cake and iced it and I made the sugar roses that decorated it. We took our dog Charlie to church! Ok so this may sound completely crazy, but he’s our little chap and there’s no way he was missing out on a party! We had a strings trio play live in the church - I’d always loved Phoebe’s wedding in Friends so Dad & I walked down the aisle to Here There and Everywhere. I have a little Figaro vintage style car and even though we had booked some beautiful old vintage jags to take us all to church in Dan and I just wanted to leave church together, with Charlie. Friends tied white painted coke cans to the back and we made our way home with the top down laughing through the country lanes! Save The Date | Issue Twelve

Q&A
Darby& Joan
y& er of Darb Karen, ownntage china! h wit p u t We caugh lk tea, cake and vi Joan to ta
So, Karen how would you sum up Darby & Joan in five words? Vintage; inspiring; creative; visual; accommodating. The fifth doesn’t sound like a particularly interesting noun, but it is an important element of who we are. What do you love about running a lovely business like Darby & Joan? I could go on and on! I love that it fits around my family; I love that I have created something; I love that I can be creative; I love that I am good at what I do and am really proud of what I have achieved; I love that couples see the passion and love of what Darby & Joan offers and ask us to help in one of the biggest days of their lives, that is a real privilege; I love that I have met so many inspiring, interesting and supportive people; I love the anticipation of how we will grow and develop. What were you doing before you set up the business? I worked in law for a fair few years then we had a family, my boys are now five
and seven. I have always collected lots of frivolous, beautiful things: old holiday postcards; bits of lace; old buttons; vintage scraps of fabric; old photo frames; and of course the cupboards were groaning with the weight of my vintage china collection. Darby & Joan as an idea had been bubbling away for a while before I had the Save The Date | Issue Twelve
courage to invest an enormous amount of time, love, funds & a fair few sleepless nights into being a business owner. Officially the leap was taken in 2010. I started the company because I felt confident there was space in the market for what I had to offer and that I would be able to do a “really, really good job”.
25
What kind of person do you think you have to be to run a business like Darby & Joan? I have learnt so much over the past couple of years, made mistakes along the way and I have developed more than I thought I could. This all sounds like a cliché, but yet so true. The most important thing is to have a passion and love what you do because this will show. You can’t make a success of your own business, whatever that may be, without putting your heart into it. What do you feel Darby & Joan can bring to a wedding to make it extra special? We take great pride in offering a personal, intimate and bespoke service. We don’t offer a package as such, preferring instead to work alongside clients’ to offer a bespoke service so we can tailor it to fit their needs. We only accept one booking per weekend so that we can give each couple the best use of our time & the full choice of our vintage pieces. Finally, talk us through the name Darby & Joan.... Darby and Joan is a proverbial phrase for a happily married couple content to live a quiet shared life. Clubs for senior citizens are often called Darby and Joan clubs (the first official club was founded in 1942) and I loved that The Reader’s Encyclopedia mentions the “loving, old-fashioned and virtuous” qualities of Darby and Joan. I live in Derby, so it was a nice play on words too. I chose it because we are a vintage hire and styling company, so I wanted a name to reflect our love of the past, yet offer us longevity.

A Grand Entrance The perfect start to your exclusive wedding day
When Diane Ansell stepped through the doors of Stoke Hall 12 years ago, it took a matter of seconds for her to decide that she was going to live there. “When I walked in, it just felt like coming home.” Now, a decade on, Diane is hoping that the Grade II-listed house will continue to cast its spell on many more people who step inside. Not that she is looking at selling it - instead, she wants couples to feel that it is the perfect place to hold and celebrate their wedding. Stoke Hall, which was built by the powerful Smith banking family in 1812, is Nottinghamshire’s newest civil wedding venue. Owners, Diane and Bryan had lived in homes around the world before returning to Nottinghamshire and when they bought Stoke Hall it was in a poor state. Interior walls were collapsing and ceilings were about to fall in. Mindful of its incredible history and determined to restore the hall to its former glory – while making little changes that would make Stoke Hall the perfect place for large celebrations - Diane and Bryan employed a skilled team
When I walked in, it just felt like coming home. of local craftsmen to help them achieve their vision. Outside, the Hall stands in open countryside, a mile outside the village of East Stoke and on the banks of the River Trent. Its landscaped grounds boast two redwood trees and an ancient sweet chestnut tree, but the jewel in its crown is its Secret Garden. Stoke Hall hosted its first wedding last year and more are scheduled for 2012. Couples can be married in any of the Hall’s Save The Date | Issue Twelve
four licensed rooms and they are all used afterwards for guests to relax in and enjoy themselves. A couple could get married on the stairs and have drinks and canapés in the Old Library, for instance, while guests are free to move around the house, settling in one of the rooms or wandering into the gardens for photographs. Diane and Bryan are currently investing in new facilities in the shape of a marquee and entertainment venue in the Carriage Court. “Our aim is to offer as wide a choice as possible in every aspect of a couple’s wedding here, and be as flexible as possible with every part of the arrangements,” Diane said. “I personally meet each couple to show them around and spend time with them to make sure I discover what is really important to them and how we can make their dreams come true. From then on, it will always be me that they are dealing with.” For more information visit www.stokehallweddings.com

Stancliffe Hall
The Perfect Rural Oasis Stancliffe Hall, nestled in the Peak District of Derbyshire is a new venue with serious WOW factor. Newlyweds Dan and Polly experienced this stunning venue for themselves on their fabulous wedding day last December. Here, the lovely couple tell us what made them fall in love with the magical Stancliffe Hall: Images by www.angelicphoto.co.uk and edited by www.leighmcara.co.uk Save The Date | Issue Twelve

“We got engaged in New York at Easter 2011 and decided that we wanted to get married in the same year. The search for a venue was a tiring process. We both love Derbyshire, so decided to look there. Our venue had to have a lovely room for the civil ceremony, rooms for our guests to stay overnight and it also had to be grand but cosy. We looked for many weeks, we had almost given up hope, when we found a link on a website. We had found Stancliffe Hall. From the minute we drove down the tree lined drive, we knew it was the perfect venue for us. Our meeting with the wedding planner was a huge success and the more we saw, the more excited we became. We decided there and then that we had found the perfect place for our wedding. We decided that we wanted to get married on New Year’s Eve and wanted to combine our special day with a huge party with all our friends and family. Choosing our florist, photographer hair and makeup people were easy. Tineke Floral Designs provided a service which was faultless. Kerry’s knowledge of flowers and arrangements was amazing. The Angelic Group photographers (www.angelicphoto. co.uk) were again fabulous. They took pictures throughout the whole day and night without being intrusive. Our photos have been edited by Dan’s best man Leigh Mcara (www.leighmcara.co.uk). Hair was taken care
of for bride and all bridesmaids by Sheryl at Lee Holmes Salon and makeup by Ali Gun (www.makeupbyali.co.uk). The day was perfect. The candle lit civil ceremony in the 1816 room was magical. The champagne cocktail reception in the Stone Court made the Hall come alive. Our wedding breakfast was a sit down meal. We had chicken liver parfait with ginger brioche to start with, followed by Beef, chips, winter coleslaw and a rocket and parmesan salad. The joints of beef were placed on the table and certain guests had been chosen to carve for the table. With aprons and chefs hats on, the fun commenced! Our caterers, Food for Thought (www.firstclasscaterer.co.uk), listened to our every request and produced a menu that was out of this world. We had so many compliments regarding the food. It was First Class. Later on, our evening guests joined us along with our photo booth (www.pictureblast.
“From the minute we drove down the tree lined drive, we knew it was the perfect venue for us” co.uk) and DJ. The queue for the photo booth was huge. The pictures are hysterical, especially as the night goes on! Stancliffe Hall were amazing throughout the whole process of planning our wedding but they exceeded themselves on the day. We didn’t have to worry about a thing. Deborah, Shelia and Sally-Ann were on hand at all times to make the day pass without a hitch. Dawn Spendlove was also a huge help in this process. Every single detail was catered for from finding my shoes, calming my dad, keeping the champagne flowing and ensuring each guest felt special and welcome. This was made even more special when Deborah’s daughter Victoria and partner Brian helped in the evening with the bar and car parking. It made our wedding into a real family event. As the clock struck midnight and we toasted the New Year, we looked around and saw a sea of smiling faces. From our family to all our friends, we couldn’t have asked for a more perfect way to start 2012”. www.stancliffehall.co.uk Whitworth Road Darley Dale, Matlock, Derbyshire DE4 2HJ 01629 736956

Q&A
Lori G Bridal Studio Lori G Lorraine at
Searching for your dream dress? Just engaged and no idea where to start looking? Here, we catch up with Lorraine from Lori G Bridal Studio who knows more than her fair share of what to look for when choosing ‘the one’: Lorraine, how long have you been in the bridal industry? I first got involved in bridal purely by chance, whilst in my final year of my Fashion Degree at Nottingham Trent University when I entered a bridal competition, simply for the prize money. I didn’t win but I was asked to attend an interview for a junior designer position at what was at the time, the biggest bridal company in wholesale and retail in the UK. I got the job! I felt like the luckiest student in the world, I had a job as a designer, before I’d even finished my degree. So that was the start.....once you get into bridal, you never want to leave.
What do you feel makes Lori G Bridal such a success? We love what we do. We are a small team and we get to meet ladies at one of the most exciting times of their lives. My sister and I love being involved in helping brides create their perfect look. We have the experience to be honest and true with expectations. Our ethos is service, service, service - when you become a Lori G Bride we want to look after you right up until your wedding day. We want the same for our brides as they do - to create a fabulous look for their perfect day. Which Bridal Designers do you stock? We feel very lucky to work with some great designers. We stock: ‘Alan Hannah’ - innovative silk gowns designed and still made in England. ‘Lyn Ashworth’ - beautiful classic romantic silk gowns, designed and still made in Save The Date | Issue Twelve

England too. These gowns are so romantic they take your breath away. ‘Linea Raffaelli’ - European design, very different, they have their own unique expression of style, originality and quality. ‘Allure Couture’ - The construction of these gowns is fabulous, maximum support and structure creating a beautiful figure, at competitive prices ‘Nicki Flynn’ & ‘True Bride’ - Brighton designer, great designs, lots of looks, great prices. What tips would you give to brides to be out there who are searching for their perfect dress? Try lots of different shapes and don’t be afraid to try something different, something you may never have seen yourself in when dreaming of your perfect dress. Give yourself plenty of time. It’s never too early to start looking, the more time you have the less stressful it is.

It’s not an impulse buy. Shortlist your favourites, walk away, and re-visit with fresh eyes. What do you love about running Lori G? You never know who is going to walk through your door and become a part of your life for the next 12 or 18 months. Lots of brides keep in touch, when they get their photos, when babies arrive … There is no better feeling than helping someone create the perfect look and being a key part of their fabulous day.
