cannot believe it’s now over two months since the last edition – so much has happened, it’s hard to know where to start! Well, apart from both Abbi and I turning a year older in April, we’ve moved offices, took part in photo shoots, met with lots of fab new wedding suppliers taking the industry by storm and of course, on 22nd April held the very first wedding event with a difference in Nottingham! The day went without a hitch and we couldn’t have been happier with the way it all worked out. After all the stress and hard work, it paid off when we saw the smiles on all our lovely brides (and exhibitors!) faces. Such a fab day so thank you to anyone who came along and supported us, we hope you had a great time. We’ve got more information on the event on page 64 of this edition. So, without further ado, we hope you enjoy this issue of the magazine and here’s to lots of much needed sunshine this summer! Lydia Burrows Save the Date Magazine

The New Bohemians Elegant, feminine and fashion forward – three great ways to describe the emerging bohemian trend. When it comes to adopting the style for your wedding, it’s all about floaty gowns, smoky make up, glamorous hair and dreamy design with fabulous blooms and quirky decor. On a very wet and windy day in April*, a team of us set off to create a whimsical outdoor photo shoot with a real bohemian feel. And here are the fabulous results. *Proof that even in a downpour and gale force winds, with the right photographer, you can get amazing pictures!

The next four pages take a look at pre wedding shoots and why they really do make a difference. Firstly, we join Abi and Paul on a pre wedding shoot with the fabulous Butterworths.

S

ave the Date Magazine are big fans of Butterworth Photography. Not only because of the couple, Becky and Neil’s warm and friendly personalities and incredible talent for capturing a great shot but because they think outside the box, always achieving amazing results. The winners of February’s Wedding Event with a Difference competition, Abi and Paul were lucky enough to have their wedding photography included within their winning package, with the fabulous Butterworth Photography. Such a gorgeous couple, we were delighted when they were declared the winners back in February 2011 and since then, they have enjoyed lots of fabulous treats. Here are the results of their pre wedding shoot with Butterworth Photography and we will be bringing you their big day in a future edition of Save the Date magazine so keep a look out!

“We include a complimentary engagement shoot with all our wedding day photography packages as we feel it’s a fabulous way to get to know each other a little better, so that you’ll feel totally relaxed in front of the camera on your special day. Our clients often comment that they appreciated the shoot before their wedding and it also adds in some more practical wedding planning. We’ve found that some couples get a little caught up in guest lists and table planning, therefore really enjoy their engagement shoot together as they find it’s brought back the sparkle to the planning when it’s become a little administrative!” Becky Butterworth Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

A MOMENT IN TIME

Rachael Connerton discovers what makes future bride and groom Sarah and Matt tick, during their pre wedding shoot

W

Lots of brides and grooms-to-be are nervous about being photographed, how did you feel before your pre-wedding shoot? We were quite nervous before the prewedding shoot but Rachael and Ian’s easygoing nature and brilliant sense of humour really put us at ease. What were you hoping for from the shoot and how did you feel in front of the camera? We were really hoping for some quirky and unique photos that reflected us as a

couple. The second-hand book shop was the perfect setting and reflected lots about our personalities. The second half was beautifully created by Michele and was almost as if we’d brought along elements of own home décor; perfectly representing what we and our wedding are about. We really enjoyed the shoot and spending time getting to know Rachael and Ian as photographers, but also as the lovely couple they are.

What would you say to other brides and grooms who might be considering a prewedding shoot? Definitely go for it! It’s a brilliant opportunity to get used to being in front of the camera and to get to know your photographer and for them to get to know you and how you’d prefer to approach the photography on your big day. How do you feel about being photographed on your wedding day following the pre-wedding shoot? We feel far more comfortable about the photography on the day, we know it will be relaxed and comfortable. We also feel 100% confident that the quality and style of our wedding day photography will be outstanding! Images www.rachaelconnertonphotography.co.uk Styling www.michelegledhill.co.uk

ith a love of food and music, a passion for interiors and books, and favourite films such as ‘Amelie’ and ‘Hot Fuzz’, it was clear right from the start that we were going to get on with Sarah and Matt. Their pre-wedding shoot, however, was the perfect opportunity to spend some time with them both and capture some lovely, relaxed images, having some fun at the same time. Sarah excitedly explained that the incredibly talented Michele Gledhill would be styling their wedding day and was keen to involve her beautiful work in the shoot. We always love to do something a little different and so jumped at the chance - using Sarah’s wedding mood board as a basis, we settled on incorporating their love of books, music and festivals and based half of the shoot in an incredible old bookshop. The second half then featured a beautifully styled vintage tent nestled in an area of long grass nearby.

Q&A

The Old Vicarage ue venue ful boutiq

UTHWELL

HIDDEN IN SO

beauti

The Old Vicarage Boutique Hotel in Southwell has to be seen to be believed. With a stunning exterior and even more impressive when you step inside, we caught up with the lovely owner Suzanne to find out what it’s like to own one of the East Midland’s most prestigious wedding venues:

Talk us through your background and how you found yourself running a wedding venue: Well this wasn’t my chosen career path – I previously worked in the corporate world heading up a sales team. Then 5 ½ years ago I fell in love with The Old Vicarage which was at the time a disused old people’s home, I went along to the auction and Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

bought it with a plan to renovate it and live in it. After a year of knocking down walls and living in a building site, I decided that it was actually far too big to live in and made the decision to open it up as a hotel and wedding venue. Nearly 3 years on from when we first opened the doors to the public on the 1st May 2009, I am even more in love with the building than when I bought it. I have eventually found my true vocation

21

as a hotelier and wedding planner – I make sure that every tiny detail for each wedding is planned to perfection. I even joke with the brides that I become Bridezillas instead of them as each detail is meticulously dealt with by me personally and I love it! But in all seriousness it means the bride can get on and leave all the planning to me and she can concentrate on enjoying choosing the finer details such as her dress and flowers etc. What made you fall in love with the Old Vicarage? Even though the building was pretty derelict when I bought it – there was just something about it that made me almost risk everything I owned to purchase it there is just this magical feeling inside and everyone agrees when they visit.

What do you feel your venue offers for weddings and what sets you apart? It’s not a typical venue, it’s a beautiful traditional Georgian house but when you step in through the front door you’re greeted with sheer style and opulence. We are also small and intimate with only 7 exclusive bedrooms, our wedding parties take over the whole hotel for 24 hours or more if they wish. We also do not have one wedding the day before or after so don’t offer the typical conveyor belt type wedding. Each detail is individual and designed to the couple’s specific requirements. We can hold up to 65 maximum for the sit down wedding breakfast and up to 80 for the evening so a lovely number. How would you describe the style of the Old Vicarage? It’s been described as New York Loft chic feel with a touch of classic manner house- A real mix of contemporary and traditional with beautiful Georgian windows, candelabras and chandeliers – the style seems to be adored by both young and old. What are your plans for the future at the Old Vicarage? The weddings have taken off so much that we decided to close the restaurant at the end of December which gives us more time to focus on every event, although we have retained our Head Chef to ensure the standards of our food are maintained. Moving forward we will continue to build on our already highly regarded reputation for delivering very special weddings. www.vicarageboutiquehotel.co.uk 01636 815989 Southwell Nottingham NG25 0NB Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

Honeysuckle & Castle, in partnership with the National Trust, are very excited to welcome you to our new, but very old Derbyshire wedding venue. We are pleased to announce that The Riding School is now fully licensed for civil ceremonies and special events and the private family chapel is now available for marriages and blessings too. Nestled in the stunning grounds of Calke Abbey, boasting magnificent baroque architecture and a fascinating history, The Riding School is a new, uniquely splendid wedding and special events venue. With an abundance of understated, yet rustic charm and a backdrop of rolling hills, grazing Long Horn cattle and sleeping courtyards, The Riding School is, without doubt, a beautiful location just perfect for an idyllic wedding. Packed full of character and surprising

original features, The Riding School is a venue with true originality. There’s the rowing boat that has been placed up high in the beams above and no one knows how it got there. There is also a minstrel’s gallery, perfect for a string quartet to play while you enjoy your wedding feast. At the Riding School, a Bride has her own private entrance through the original Game Keepers Cottage, ensuring nobody will see her dress until the last possible moment. Once a wedding ceremony has taken place, the happy couple then have access to the house and estate, including the orangery and walled garden, for photographs. A group shot of all of your guests outside the house looks amazing and incredibly grand. Not everything here is old though. Sally and Helen (of Honeysuckle and Castle)

have worked tirelessly for nearly a year to transform the Riding School into a bridal heaven and have prepared everything to ensure that you have an unforgettable day. Thanks to some recent renovation work, the Riding School now has a heated floor so that you can enjoy this space all year round too. To put it simply, the Riding School is a venue like no other. Please be our guests and join us for the Grand Open Day on Sunday 24th June, 11-4pm Calke Abbey, Ticknall, Derby, DE73 7LE And for information or to request a wedding brochure, call Honeysuckle & Castle on 01332 871654 or visit www.honeysuckleandcastle.co.uk

Time for Tea!

Gemma Morgan of Wedding of my Dreams creates the perfect tea party’

Follow some of these ideas to create a fun and relaxed atmosphere at your reception by holding a tea party wedding theme. You don’t have to incorporate all of these ideas in to your wedding day, just pick out a couple.

Setting the scene Invitations are the first glimpse your guests will get into the style of your wedding. Think about choosing an invitation to capture the style of your day.

A warm welcome

Décor

Kick off the theme from the minute your guests arrive at your venue. Serve your guests champagne, Pimm’s or elderflower pressee from the stable door of a vintage caravan. This 1960’s beauty is named Audrey and is available to hire from Vintage Glamour Days.

I love the ideas of pretty floral bunting hanging from trees, or running throughout your marquee. Bunting can be bought, hired or handmade by a member of your family. Top tip If you’re using bunting just the once look into paper bunting as a cheaper alternative to cotton bunting with the same effect (available to buy from www. theweddingofmydreams.co.uk).

Afterwards, she makes an amazing backdrop for your photographs and will give you and your guests a day to remember. Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

33

and using tea party canapé flags on your scones or in your flowers. (available to buy from www.theweddingofmydreams.co.uk) For tea party favours collect vintage tea cups and fill with wick and wax when you get home, make this into a fun activity and invite your bridesmaids round to help. Each guest can take home a handmade candle, a beautiful reminder of your tea party wedding and they will look lovely sitting on your guest tables.

Afternoon tea Rather than a three course meal treat your guests to a spot of afternoon tea. Think speciality teas, delicate and dainty finger sandwiches including smoked salmon and cream cheese followed by freshly baked scones all served on vintage crockery. Vintage Glamour Days offer this wonderful service.

For an extra detail why not make your own tea bags for guests to drink after dinner. For a final tip if you’re thinking of having a tea party styled wedding or party get your hands on The Vintage Tea Party Book by Mitchell Beazley, filled with even more ideas for creating the perfect tea party.

Table styling Styling your tables to fit in with your tea party can be simple and effective. Drape lace table cloths over your white linen to give an instant tea party feel. These can be picked up for next to nothing in charity shops. Bunting looks great strung from the front of top tables or around your cake table. Bring the tea party to your table centres, fill cake stand and tea cups with seasonal flowers. All tables don’t have to be the same. You could have a set of tea cups and saucers filled with beautiful blooms on one table while having a three tiered cake stand on another. For a mad hatters tea party why not stack a number of tea cups together and fill with vintage blooms.

Darling Buds of... April An April wedding with all the colours of spring and even a sunny day. Sian tells us all about her special day... Our wedding was on 1st April 2012 at St. Peters Church in Tollerton, followed by a reception at The Carriage Hall in Plumtree. We started planning our wedding 15 months ago – Gav proposed on a new year trip to Bruges. When we got home we started researching local venues and all things wedding related! After a couple of months of looking around what felt like the whole of Nottinghamshire, we decided on the very first place we looked at –The Carriage Hall in Plumtree. We loved the open space, the exposed beams and the fact that it is

contemporary without being too modern. Gavin’s Grandad was a signalman for British Rail so we also really liked the railway connection. Another massive selling point, apart from the fact that it is within walking distance of where we live, was the fact that Perkins restaurant has such a good reputation and we wanted to make sure we gave our guests a really special meal. It was important to me that we had a church wedding and having our reception at The Carriage Hall meant we could get married in our local church in Tollerton. Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

One of the first things I did (after booking our photographer) was book a girlie day with my chief bridesmaid to go wedding dress shopping. I really hadn’t given much thought to the type of dress I would wear so it really was a matter of starting from scratch and trying anything and everything on. In the first shop that we went to I can remember being asked if I would like a full lace dress and replying “oooooh no definitely not” – hmmmmm! I have discovered through planning our wedding that I am extremely indecisive so it’s fortunate that my friend tells it as it is and forced me to be ruthless when deciding on which dresses I liked and more importantly trying to find the one that I loved. To cut a long story short and much to Gavin’s dismay (although it did give him some good material for his speech), I actually bought four dresses (I told you I was indecisive!). The one I actually wore – a gorgeous lace Sassi Holford dress , I bought two weeks before the wedding and was very similar to the first dress I tried on. One thing I have learnt through the whole process of planning a wedding is to stick with your gut instinct as you’re normally right first time! Initially I had also planned to wear a veil but it just didn’t look right with my dress so I used the lace and pearl scalloped edge of the veil to make a belt to go around my wedding dress and the little cuffs that I wore (thanks

to Gavin’s Auntie Susan for this!). We didn’t really have a theme in mind when we started planning the wedding but when we decided on the date for our wedding (1st April may seem like a strange choice but we wanted to get married at the start of the Easter holidays), we decided that we wanted to go with really bright spring flowers. I remember having a conversation with a friend quite early on in the process

about the types of flowers I wanted and I said to her that I quite liked the flowers that you see growing at the side of motorways – she thought I had gone a bit mad but that’s where my obsession with all things yellow began. I’m pleased to say that I didn’t end up with a bouquet of motorway weeds but our amazing florist Michele Gledhill found the most beautiful roses, tulips and other lovely flowers in the same really vibrant yellow that we

wanted. We were determined to inject some sunshine into our wedding day regardless of how the weather turned out through our bright flowers, but as it happens we were really lucky and had bright sunshine all day. We also had a bright yellow cake (made by Gavin’s Mum) and our little bridesmaids had marigold yellow dresses from Next, which looked amazing with their flowers. The boys all wore yellow buttonholes too, which looked really nice with their grey suits and brown polka dot ties. We really wanted to add a personal touch to our wedding day so we decided to make all of our own stationery. It took days to make all of the place settings, invites, table plan etc. but it was so worth it in the end. I think above all else, the thing that made our wedding day so perfect for us was the fact that it was so personal and so many of our friends and family got involved. My cousins wrote a poem for us that they read out in church, my little sister made some sweets for the sweet table, a close friend of ours acted as our master of ceremonies

and did a really great job in bringing all of the speeches together seamlessly. Another really good friend did our make up and her super talented son and his girlfriend played with their band Hold Tight in the evening and made sure we ended the wedding with a massive party. All of the suppliers we chose for our wedding were absolutely amazing and I can’t recommend them highly enough. ehlers Photography consists of myself, Cathy, as the main wedding photographer, and my husband Brian, who is the second shooter and assistant. Working as a team, having two photographers at your wedding allows us to shoot from two different perspectives so that we can get fresh, fun and original shots, which capture the essence of your day. We love what we do and enjoy every minute of our time taking photographs of fabulous weddings throughout the year. We pride ourselves in taking story-telling, natural, romantic and fun imagery that you feel you can step into and relive those wonderful moments all over again. We are happy to travel with our work and accept commissions from around the UK as well as abroad. There are many fantastic weddings that I would like to showcase. Naomi and Richard’s wedding on the 3rd September 2011, at Croxton Kerrial, in the Vale of Belvoir, stands out in my mind. It was unique and great fun to photograph. They wanted to evoke their love for their village lifestyle and surroundings in the photography. One highlight was photographing Naomi and Richard in the village field with a gaggle of geese. It was quite a feat to photograph but a good laugh! Trying to get the geese to stand still was impossible! Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

“We first met Cathy at a Wedding Fayre and the warm and open greeting we received enabled us to feel this part of our wedding was easy to decide. She made the process of our wedding photography sound simple and exquisite, just what we were looking for. Cathy and Brian came to visit us and see our village, home, church and reception venue to discuss what we wanted. All our ideas were incorporated within the photography as well as many more suggestions from Cathy. The guidance, support and subtle presence on our wedding day made us feel comfortable and at ease it was enjoyable and a great success!” Naomi & Richard Sims

BEAUTIFUL D

How would you describe the style of dresses at Mimi Toko?

different gowns look on real people rather than on the hanger!

We pride ourselves on housing some fantastic British and International designers with each having their own unique style. Most of our gowns have something really individual and unusual about them whether it be the striking colours and theatrical designs of Ian Stuart or the simple sculpture of a Suzanne Neville.

What do you feel makes Mimi Toko stand out from other bridal boutiques in the area?

What do you and the team at Mimi Toko offer to a bride when she’s choosing her dream dress?

Our luxury boutique is located just north of Derby in the village of Duffield so parking is easy and we don’t have the hustle and bustle of a busy city centre. We only take one bridal appointment at a time and make sure all appointments are for at least an hour so you won’t be rushed. We believe that the process of choosing your wedding dress should be a truly special

Our approachable, friendly and experienced staff offer a dedicated service for the bride which starts on her very first visit. We understand that brides are looking for the “perfect gown”, a gown that will complement their features, their individuality and their taste. We encourage brides to bring their “wedding book” or any pictures etc they might have seen of things they like so we can get a real feel for the type of wedding the bride is going for. We also try to encourage brides to try styles that they might not ordinarily choose for themselves as it really is amazing how

one and we want you to relax and enjoy the whole experience. Which bridal designers do you stock? We stock the multi- award winning designer Ian Stuart, whose gowns are as innovative as they are stunning. We also have Suzanne Neville for the more classically elegant look and Enzoani which tend to be quite vintage inspired. Essense of Australia and Martina Liana are two of our international designers whose collections never disappoint, with their collections including many contemporary lace dresses along with the more traditional satin and taffeta gowns.

Benjamin Roberts also offer a very eclectic range of dresses, again, something to suit all tastes. Last year we added a bridesmaid boutique upstairs in our Duffield store and now offer a range of designs from Dessy and Alfred Sung. The quirky knee length Alfred Sung gowns have proved a real hit for bridesmaids this year! What do you love about being involved in the wonderful world of weddings? It’s generally just such a happy environment to work in with every day bringing something, or someone, different. It sounds like a clichÊ but there really is no better feeling than seeing someone fall in love with their dream dress and share in the process of planning one of the most special and important days of their lives! rriving at Ragdale Hall, along the meandering country lanes, you feel miles away from anywhere surrounded by beautiful meadows and flower filled fields. However, this spa retreat is just a 20 minute drive from Nottingham and within easy reach of the M1 and A1 between Loughborough and Melton Mowbray. The ideal spot. Upon check in, it was immediately apparent that this award winning spa lays a great amount of emphasis on personal service. Attentive, polite and so accommodating, the staff personally show you around the spa before handing over your outfit for the day – a fluffy white robe. Having checked in, myself and Abbi enjoyed a welcome drink before using our guide and map to plan our day. We decided to start off with a gentle water aerobics session. Half an hour of jumping around in the stunning 25 metre pool full of lovely ladies, laughing and relaxed, it was a great start to the day. After the session, we had a little go on the waterside exercise machines – rowing, cycling and stepping in water is the way forward – so much more fun than a regular gym!

A deceivingly spacious place, we popped our robes on and spent an hour exploring our retreat for the day. Unfortunately, the April showers were in full swing so we stayed indoors but outside was idyllic and looked like the perfect setting for a sunny day. Inside, the corridors weaved around to reveal lots of hidden coves – mainly consisting of oversized comfy chairs and sofas, magazines, soothing music and a tranquil atmosphere. Lunch time arrived and we got to experience what can only be described as a feast in the grand dining room. With a focus on healthy eating, the buffet was amazing, filled with beautiful fresh food created by the renowned expert chefs. After lunch, we decided to experience what we were really here for – the thermal spa. A cocoon of relaxation, this state of the art spa was fantastic. Cascading waterfalls, meandering pools filled with warm water, outdoor Jacuzzis and quiet areas to sit and read. Combine this with the thermal experience with various sensory rooms and areas to indulge in. Literally, we spent over two hours here and could have easily spent more – amazing. Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

Not content with the huge lunch time feast, we decided to head to the seaside themed Verandah Bar for a cup of tea and cake. By this time, it was 4pm and so we found ourselves a comfy sofa in the Conservatory, borrowed a few magazines, curled up and chilled out. Dragging ourselves to the changing rooms, we spent longer than necessary in the fabulous rain showers, reluctantly removed our robe and slowly brought ourselves back to normality. So, would we recommend Ragdale Hall Spa to you, a bride to be currently in the midst of your wedding planning? Absolutely! This incredible retreat is perfect for anyone after some well deserved ‘r and r’. So, grab your girls and prepare for a day of sheer bliss and a truly personal spa experience.

Q&A

Amaranthyne TELLS US it MY THORNE

A

Planning a wedding can be a real challenge. Yes it’s fun and can be one of the loveliest times of your life but it can also be hugely stressful and time consuming. So, we caught up with a woman who plans weddings for a living, Amy Thorne at Amaranthyne Weddings and Events, and here she tells us all about it.

’s all in the

planning

So, Amy, why did you decide to become a wedding planner?

A full list of our services can be found on our website - www.amaranthyne.co.uk

I have always been creative and organised with vision and attention to detail. I spent years in admin and marketing roles but I always knew I wanted to get into something more creative and more in fitting with my personality. I have organised lots of events and a point in my life arose where I had the opportunity to retrain in the wedding industry which is an area I have always had a passion for. Weddings are such a fantastic celebration and I love the fact that I can interpret people’s visions making them a reality.

What benefits do you feel a wedding planner would bring to a couple planning their wedding?

What services do you offer for brides to help with the organisation of their big day?

How far in advance should brides and grooms be thinking about a wedding planner?

We offer numerous tailor-made services to help brides with the organisation of their big day, including bespoke full wedding planning, on the day coordination, venue and supplier searches, budget management and we also design Swarovski crystal favours and decorations to fit in with every wedding theme.

It’s never too late to book a wedding planner, which is why on the day coordination works perfectly for so many couples. Some couples feel that they want to do everything themselves and then at the last minute, just want to offload it all to somebody, so that they can spend time relaxing before the big day.

Save The Date | Issue Fourteen

A wedding planner can be working with a couple for a long period of time on the lead up to their big day. We can help ease any worries, talk over concerns and provide a friendly ear willing to listen. We also have an extensive database of suppliers and excellent negotiation skills (meaning we can get the best price).

55

The perfect timescale if a couple wanted full bespoke planning is 9-12 months, but anything is possible and I am always up for a challenge. What celebrity wedding would you LOVE to be a wedding planner for? All brides should feel like a celebrity on their wedding day, it is their day to be the centre of attention and feel absolutely beautiful. However, if I had to pick a celebrity I would probably go for Emma Watson, she has style, elegance and a real natural stunning beauty as well as a slight quirky edge. Just writing this has resulted in visions and ideas bubbling in my head, so I’m going to start an inspiration board for it, you never know!!
