an you believe it’s October already? This year has completely whizzed past at record speed and the next time I write this note it will officially be 2013! Scary. Anyway, I hope summer has been good for you. We’ve been busy styling photo shoots, planning the wedding event with a difference, attending rather swanky industry parties and working with fabulous local venues on getting them started in the wonderful world of weddings. Not to mention, pulling this edition of the magazine together. Phew. This issue is a ‘Real Wedding Special’. We decided to do that because we know that’s what you, our readers want. Getting the wedding stories straight from the horse’s mouth (the horse being the bride in this case) which will hopefully inspire you in the organisation of your big day.

We’ve got lots more for you to enjoy too including our gorgeous photo shoot at Langley Priory in Diseworth, interviews with suppliers, how to create a ‘travel inspired’ wedding plus loads more. And don’t forget, there is an extended version of this magazine online – www.savethedatemagazine.co.uk which includes lots more glorious images, gossip and things to inspire .... Enjoy what’s left of 2012 and we’ll see you in 2013! Lydia Burrows Save the Date Magazine Tel: 01530 223 332 East Acre, The Walnut Yard Langley Priory, Diseworth Derbyshire DE74 2QQ

Old School Glamour comes to Langley Priory

9

W

e at Save the Date Magazine love a good photo shoot. Not only do we spend the day mixing with hugely talented wedding industry folk but we get to see our ideas come to life with amazing dÊcor, style and of course, topped off with a fabulous photographer. The location for our shoot was the incredible wedding venue, Langley Priory. With its acres of land, meandering pathways, beautiful oak trees and the charming house as a backdrop, we couldn’t have found a more idyllic setting. The shoot was loosely styled around an old school glamour theme. Our stylist Sharna at Ava Bunting simply transformed areas with complete creativity and flair, adding touches of elegance and glamour with hanging chandeliers from trees, beautiful vintage furniture and ornate props and accessories. The models were styled with a classic, elegant approach with soft and subtle make up tones and intricately designed hair styles. The beautifully elegant dresses, shoes and head pieces added to the effect and provided the exact old school glamour look we had intended. And, here are the results courtesy of our photographer, Lee Garland.

Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

We introduce - the vintage pole marquee Bond Marquees, the mastermind behind some of the East Midland’s best and most recognised marquee structures, has been developing a brand new bespoke marquee – of the vintage pole variety. The vintage pole marquee is handcrafted and made of canvas and offers a truly nostalgic setting for your big day. With hand painted internal king poles, hessian guy ropes and wooden noggins (perfect for bunting) the ‘look’ you will achieve with this type of marquee is not only on trend but brimming with character, style and would be such a talking point at any celebration or event. You can bring your shabby chic theme to life with lots of bunting, vintage china, old fashioned games and a fabulously authentic ‘English’ approach. As night falls and the band begin to entertain,

festoon lighting adds to the magical vintage look of this gorgeous marquee. Bond Marquees is one of the most recognised marquee companies operating throughout the East Midlands and have worked with some of the best wedding venues in the area. You can find their clear span marquees at Thrumpton Hall, Combermere Abbey, Chillington Hall and Tissington Hall and their brand new vintage pole marquee will be available very soon at Whatton House & Gardens, as well as for private events. Designing your dream dress

Bride Charlotte watched her dress evolve from concept to completion at bridal designer, Angela Vickers in Nottingham. Here’s her story:

Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

26

“I remember the first time I walked into Angela Vickers studio, on Lower Parliament Street, Nottingham. It was 16 months ago and I was going for an interview to be Angela’s PA and Assistant designer. It was an Aladdin’s Cave of treats and sparkles. The rails full of beautifully handcrafted gowns, exquisite French lace, fine silks and embellished Swarovski crystals, catching my eye, as I nervously waited. Little did I know then, I was going to fulfil my childhood dreams - working in bridal, designing my own wedding dress and having it made. I always knew I was never going to find my dress on a rail or on a website, nor did I want anyone else to have had a dress like mine. I wanted it to be truly unique and a special process, one where I could be involved every step of the way. That’s what we try to do at Angela Vickers Bridal Design, provide you with a unique experience, to enable your dreams to come true and that’s what happened for me. Angela treated my experience as she does with all our brides with professionalism, guidance and support. As a bride to be, with all the decisions I knew I had to make, it was a nervous but exciting time. Angela was a great support ensuring I made the right decisions each step of the way. It was such a fantastic experience. During the consultation we discussed ideas, looked at fabrics, colours and silhouettes. I had run many brides 1st appointments in the showroom before, but there’s nothing quite like playing dress up in such beautiful gowns. After working out which silhouette suited my figure, I sharpened my pencil to create a sketch for Angela to work from. I deliberated over each pencil mark until I was happy. Angela crafted my pattern from my measurements, which I had been working very hard in the gym to achieve! The dress was first styled in calico, we call this a toile. It enables Angela to make any adjustments to the patterns at this stage. It was so exciting to see the gown take shape around my body. The toile fitted me perfectly.

It was a warm March day when Angela laid my bridal fabric on the cutting table. I remember the rush of excitement as she carefully cut out my pattern pieces. I couldn’t wait for it to be ready for my first fitting.

at the studio. I had had my eye on a few trinkets for months. The Benjamin Adams diamante shoes, the Stephanie Browne Comb and the blush pink veil with ivory trim to match my dress. I was in heaven.

She had sculpted my gown from ivory French lace and layers of silk fabrics to create just the right hue of pink that I had been dreaming about. It was all starting to become very real. During the fitting, Angela worked her way around me pinning and tweaking the dress to get the perfect fit, it felt like a glove.

The day had arrived when the dress was ready for me to embellish. I had carefully selected my crystals and pearls and went to work. Each piece of lace was carefully hand stitched to my train to make it truly unique.

At this stage it was time for me to select my accessories from the extensive collection we have Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

Collection day had arrived. I had kept it a secret from everyone, including my mum. I couldn’t wait for her to see the labour and love, Angela and I had put into my wedding dress. I stepped

28 out from the changing room to see my mum’s face, it’s a memory I will cherish forever. All three of us had tears in our eyes; it was such a special moment. The day itself, was absolutely amazing. I arrived at the altar, for my husband-to-be to turn and look at me. He whispered, ‘Oh God, just beautiful’. In my dress I truly felt it. The dress fitted around my body making me feel elegant and slim, the silks against my skin were so soft to touch. I felt like a celebrity. Everyone commented on how stunning the dress looked, that was thanks to Angela and the team. It was not only me that had this memorable experience but both my bridesmaids and mum had exquisite outfits designed, tailor made to fit with carefully selected accessories and shoes dyed to match. Even Angela designed and created an outfit for the big day - everyone looked stunning. All these elements add to the service we provide here at Angela Vickers, using the finest silks, the best quality lace, a team of highly qualified seamstress’, ensuring that each dress is put together, with care and precision. Angela’s support and knowledge making sure each bride has a special experience. I’m incredibly lucky to be a part of the Angela Vickers Bridal team, and to have had the opportunity to design my own wedding dress, under her wing, of expertise and knowledge. I would recommend the experience to every bride to be.

Every girl wants to feel special on her big dayI can say that thanks to Angela and the team I truly did.” Wedding images courtesy of Beaulieu www.beaulieuphotography.co.uk Make up by Ali Gunn www.makeupbyali.co.uk Hair by James White at www.jameswhitehair.com

BEING BESPOKE

Bride, Joanne had settled on an average dress to save money and time .... until she met the talented team at Timeless Couture and then everything changed ....

“At first, the dress was not a priority for me. I wanted to ensure that the majority of our wedding funds were spent on ensuring all of our family and friends had an amazing day. I also couldn’t find any dresses that I liked, so I decided to go for the standard boob tube fairy dress (which did nothing for my shape). I bought this from ebay for only a small amount, so you can imagine how it fitted! However, I attended the Wedding Event with a Difference back in October and met with the fabulous and talented Rachel and Astra from Timeless Couture.

quaint Derbyshire village, Wirksworth. I took the dress with me that I had purchased from ebay and the whole process of changing and adapting the style began. The whole process was so exciting! They tried out various styles of dresses on me at the beginning to find out what suited my body shape and also what I felt comfortable in. Then I saw them start to create a beautiful dress. Rachel and Astra are so creative and nothing is a problem for them. I felt so special on each appointment and every time I visited it would be further on. The detail on the dress was amazing (the back part especially) and it was great to have a dress designed especially for me, that was unique, individual and bespoke.

I was inspired by the amazing dress that the model was wearing, it was so different and creative.

Pure Documentary W e dd i n g p h oto g r ap h y ‘Documentary’ is the latest buzzword that wedding photographers are using to describe their styles, but Ian Bursill, East Midlands region winner of the 2012 Wedding Industry Awards explains what PURE documentary wedding photography is really all about. “In a nutsell, It’s the art of photographing a wedding with absolutely no intervention, therefore simply documenting - not controlling - an event as it happens. Pure documentary wedding photography should be devoid of any interference whatsoever. Photographing a wedding and relinquishing all control is an incredibly difficult skill to master. But the rewards in the form of the narrative of the day are great. If a moment is real it has a real memory attached to it. Ian’s emphasis is primarily on the interaction between people, interspersed with the occasional detail to add context and to help set the scene, and a handful of portraits. Capturing feelings, personalities and emotions is what he excels in and it is for this reason that his clients seek him out. There are lots of other styles of wedding photography; classical, posed, formal, contemporary, client driven etc., but pure documentary wedding photographers really are part of a very small niche in the photographic industry. The style is not the only way to photograph a wedding, but it’s certainly the most rewarding if you are looking to capture real moments that will evoke wonderful memories of your day. If you’re looking for a mainstream wedding photographer, you’re going to be spoilt for choice. However if you’re looking for a pure documentary wedding photographer who will narrate your day in a series of images captured without direction or intervention look no further.”

Stancliffe Hall The Couple – Veronique and David // Date – 26 July 2012 Venue – Stancliffe Hall, Darley Dale, Matlock www.stancliffehall.co.uk

Groom David, talks us through his recent big day: “A number of factors helped us to choose our venue. We wanted to get married in or near Matlock as Veronique grew up there. The church was the parish church where Veronique lived until she was 6 and we thought it was beautiful. We were open minded about the reception venue but it was important that it wasn’t too far from the church and that it provided some accommodation, and not just for us (bride and groom) as we had family coming from abroad. We had

heard about Stancliffe (it had only just opened as a wedding venue) but Veronique and her family knew it well as her brother went there when it was a prep-school. We loved it straight away. The fact that we had so much control over how the day would look - it being exclusively ours for the wedding - was a massive plus but more than anything we were bowled over by how beautiful it looked, both inside and out.

Veronique tried on what seemed like a million dresses! She knew she preferred dresses with lace on them and as for styles, she tried on every style that was going. She decided to go for a dress by Suzanne Neville as the corsetry of the dresses was so well constructed, but all Suzanne’s dress that she tried on were so light and comfortable to wear. She finally settled on “Leading Lady’, but asked them to adapt it to be strapless and incorporated a ribbon sash. We were very keen that the reception and evening did not feel like a meal followed by a party; it had to feel more than that. Straight away we decided that the speeches should be in the evening so that those who couldn’t be fit into the wedding breakfast felt included in the wedding. During the meal we had a ‘pub quiz’, we passed quiz sheets around with questions on 10 school subject topics (we’re both teachers) and a photo round on our heroes (from 90s footballers to Agatha Christie). I read the answers between courses and the winners got coasters that we painted ourselves (with messages such as ‘I was the smartest person at Veronique and David’s wedding’.) We also had a photo booth which was very popular with the guests, a colouring in poster for guests to colour, then write a message on for us about what they consider to be the key to a successful marriage. We also had cake pops, macaroons, and chocolate moustache lollipops dotted about the place to add a bit of fun! For the evening do, we hired a band that my brother, the best man used to play in, but as a warm up act I played with some friends of mine. Most of the guests knew this was coming, but what they didn’t know was that Veronique joined in. Veronique used to sing a lot (she’s classically trained) but hasn’t for a long time, so it was a great surprise for her parents and all the guests that we dueted. This was instead of a first dance, we sang ‘Baby when you’re gone’ by Bryan Adams and Mel C, and ‘Fascination’ by Alphabeat. Later when the proper band came on (‘The Juggernaut of Rock’) my brother joined them on bass and I sang for a couple of numbers (‘Dancing in the dark’ Bruce Springsteen and ‘We built this city on rock and roll’ - Starship). We really felt that these touches made the day unique and hopefully memorable to our guests.”

East Lodge

The Couple – Jemma and Joff Date – 21 July 2012 Venue – East Lodge Country House, Derbyshire - www.eastlodge.com

Bride, Jemma tells us all about her special day: “From a little girl I always wanted an outdoor wedding, dreaming of flowers, sunshine, a beautiful back drop and spending it with the people that matter, family and friends. This was the most important thing to me. Needless to say that was exactly what I got, the sunshine was out, the flowers and backdrop were beautiful and I got to spend it with the most important people in my life… one lucky lady! Believe it or not East Lodge was the first and only venue I looked at. I didn’t need to see anywhere else, it was just what I was looking for… my dream wedding. I took the DVD

home to show my family and felt myself welling up whilst I watched it. I just knew that it was the place where I was meant to get married. In my head I had already got married there, imagining what everything would look like. We got the venue all weekend which meant the Friday was also a great day and the wedding felt longer. I got to spend the entire weekend with wonderful family and friends! I had no idea what style, colour or type of dress I wanted. I went to different bridal shops and tried on many different styles and liked a lot of them. But obviously the dress you wear for that special day you need to LOVE. Then I found it, a vintage gold lace dress by Charlotte Balbier. Not only did I love the dress but I felt Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

amazing wearing it. I chose a birdcage veil which made the dress very 40s which I loved so I decided on the bold red lips and dark eye makeup. I found the most gorgeous vintage shoes which were lace with pearl detail, but what definitely sold them to me was the date of our wedding printed on the sole. When I chose the venue I imagined ‘Vintage Garden Party’ but then my dress was more ‘40s Glamour,’ so I went with a little bit of both. My bridesmaid dresses were Audrey Hepburn style and a mint green to go with the outdoors. My wonderful husband chose the suits which were grey with cream accessories and brown shoes. With help from Kerry at Tineke Floral Designs I had peonies and

hydrangeas. My bouquet was very simple but elegant and looked beautiful. The tables were decorated with vintage birdcages and candles. On the top table there were candelabras and little vintage jars with individual peonies and candles. I made my own place settings using old buttons and I bought jars and filled them with vintage sweets and I used hessian, wooden and wicker hearts to make my table plan. My cake was white with a lace and pearl trim to fit with my dress and decorated with a few white peonies and hydrangeas. I actually plucked up the courage to do a speech at the wedding. I always knew what I wanted to say but to make sure I wrote it the night before. No one knew I was going to do a speech so as they were coming to an end I stood up. Let’s just say they started with laughter and ended with a fair few tears. It was a heart wrenching speech to those that couldn’t be with us and a thank you to everyone that was. I was very proud of myself and if nothing else it was a memorable moment.”

Carriage Hall The Couple - Mr Chris Stevens and Mr Simon Sharrod Date – 13 August 2012 // Venue - The Carriage Hall, Perkins, Plumtree, Nottinghamshire www.perkins-family.co.uk

Groom, Chris tells us about his special civil partnership: “On each of our previous visits to Perkins Restaurant, Simon and myself would look at the architecture and setting of the Carriage Hall and we often spoke about how well suited it was to us as a venue for our future civil partnership ceremony. The style of the building, its history with the railways, the lighting by day and

by night, the internal accommodation including bar area, mezzanine level and high standard of the rest room facilities, the excellent grounds with ample space to move around- these were all the attractive features that enticed us towards the Carriage Hall as our final choice. Crucial to our decision was also the fact that the civil ceremony and reception could be held within the same building without the need for additional travel. Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

I think the overriding theme of our day was one of ‘sophisticated simplicity’. We met event coordinator Michele Gledhill at the wedding open day and she arranged all of the flowers – a ceremonial display of yellow roses, white snap dragons and hydrangea on the main table interspersed by candles. With the table drape and reflective mirror the effect was absolutely stunning. Church candles were also placed in each of the arch windows. The concept was one of summer, light and

Andy Oliver Photography were excellent. We established a good rapport straight away and they took great care in ensuring that a good working and social relationship was established from the outset, including a rehearsal day at Belton House near Grantham. One of the images from this became our guest signature board on the big day itself. Perhaps one of the most memorable sets of photographs was those taken against a landscape of sweeping bales of hay in the fields neighbouring the carriage hall. Neither of us were expecting that on our wedding day but it was good fun and the results were superb! We knew we wanted the children to be involved in the speeches part of the reception rather than the traditional formats of listening to adults speak. Firstly, Simon’s niece Abigail read a delightful poem and

this was followed by Chris’s family who performed some recorder music as a family ensemble and then Rebecca playing her flute. This was enchanting and we were so pleased that we invited them to do that before we gave the speeches and final toast. We are both very proud uncles indeed!!”

fresh colours- elegant and tasteful. This theme was also incorporated into the wedding cake designed and made by my mother Marilyn. We were keen to keep the event as informal as possible, opting for a tapas style reception rather than a formal sit down meal. This proved to be a triumph. We confirmed our menu choices following a complimentary tasting session at Perkins Restaurant, carefully prepared by the Head Chef Sarah Newham. We were both bowled over by the excellent quality of the food Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

Priest House Hotel The Couple – Beth and Tom Date – 26th May 2012 Venue - The Priest House Hotel, Castle Donnington www.handpickedhotels.co.uk

Here, Beth tells us about her big day at the Priest House Hotel: “The location of the Priest House sold it to us. It was perfect as the church was so close by. Also, I am originally from Derbyshire and Tom is from Leicestershire and this venue was right in the middle so it made it easy for both sides of guests to get there. The added bonus of it having plenty of rooms to house all our guests was great too!

Instead of having favours on the wedding tables we decided to do a sweet buffet table so people could help themselves to a pick and mix! All our sweets were pink, white or green to keep in with our theme! Instead of having a ‘normal’ guest book for everyone to write in we decided to do something a little different. We hired a photo booth and placed our guest book next to it.

We asked our guests to have a picture taken and to pop that into our book with a message....our guests then got to take a reminder of our day home. This was brilliant and I would definitely recommend it! The real thing that sold it to us was that we loved the setting. The river, gardens and building are beautiful. We knew right from the start we wanted a building with some character, not just a boring function room. As soon as we had looked around, we booked. In fact, we didn’t even bother checking anywhere else out! I decided to go to Couture Bridal Design in Nottingham and had a dress made just for me. It was nothing like what I originally wanted, it was far bigger! The ladies there were great, every fitting was so special and they really listened to my ideas. To watch my dress being built up from a piece of cotton was amazing. I loved that I got to add bits to it and change it along the way too! I added on a broach of my Nana’s to make it really special. They also made my Sister’s bridesmaid dress and my Mum’s

outfit. The backs of all our dresses were the same so we could match. Our theme was a little English Country Garden. We knew we wanted sage green and dusky pink as soon as we saw our florist at a wedding fayre at The Priest House. She had a lovely vase with pearls looped around it and it was full of BIG green hydrangeas and pink roses. After this find, that was the colour theme set. We wanted our theme to be soft and remind people of summer. We thought the bright colours would really set the tone. We added a polka dot theme as it went well with the colours we had chosen. In the evening we had lanterns and fairy lights outside and it looked so beautiful against the venue and the summer evening. We were so lucky to have one of the hottest days of the year. Luckily we had arranged to have Pimms and lemonade on the front lawn as arrival drinks. At the last minute we decided to buy some over sized garden games including skittles and set them up on the lawn at the front. This went down really well with the children and kept them entertained whilst the photos were being taken.” Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

Illustries

Q&A

Emma and Sam, how would you sum up Illustries in a few words Illustries are a brand new way of capturing every detail of your wedding day: your story and beautiful wedding photography beautifully presented in a must-have bespoke book that reflects your once-in-a-lifetime day. What made you decide to start the business? Emma, who is now our Writing Director got married in 2008 and was looking for something different to record her own wedding – but she couldn’t find anything that combined her photos with words (well, she is a writer at heart!) and nothing seemed to fit the bill. She knew someone who could help – Sam, our Creative Director, and we decided to create it ourselves! Sam is a very experienced graphic designer and Emma is a marketing consultant and seasoned copywriter and we’d worked on other projects together. We decided to try and fill the gap we’d found, and some time later, here we are! How does the design process work? Firstly, we work really closely with our clients – we get to know them so well over the process of creating Save The Date | Issue Fifteen their Illustry that we consider them friends by the end!

80

81

Save The Date | Issue Fifteen

82

Everything is geared around them – we interview them and their nearest and dearest after the wedding and we make sure we get a real feel for them and their day. Emma writes their story from the very beginning right up to happy ever after and then when we receive their photographs Samantha starts crafting their Illustry, always based around their colour scheme, theme or general ‘feel’ of their day. We have so many ways of telling their story - it may be illustrations, sketches, poems, quotes and so on - but we always choose ways that suit the couple and the style of Illustry they’ve chosen. Once we’ve combined their story, photographs and added some creative design touches, the couple have plenty of time to read and check their Illustry before we send it off to our specialist printer to be made, we don’t go ahead until they are absolutely happy. Why do you feel people tend to buy one of your albums after they’ve already received their photography wedding album? Most of our clients actually choose an Illustry instead of a traditional album. Some choose an Illustry alongside their traditional album as there really isn’t a huge amount of choice out there and they want to make sure they have a lasting reminder that has their own personal twist. More often, they choose an Illustry instead of a traditional album, because they want to ensure they capture every detail of their day, their way. It’s a great choice if you’ve decided to go for a digital only package, or you are looking for an anniversary present (first anniversary present is paper after all!) and we also work closely with photographers, so often you can choose an Illustry in one of their packages. Rather inpressive I’m sure you will agree. What a great alternative to a regular wedding album!
