Editor’s inbox

Editor’s inbox Living in the world being bombarded with quick newsfeed on social media is not easy especially for young generation. Switching off those phone, gadgets and resistant to all technology applications to stay focus in what is matter most in this busy world is one courageous and admirable action especially for a young generation like Grace Benjasiriwan.

During our photo shoot, a sit down interview and our finish off dinner to talk on her story and her family, she was not once distracted by the pop-up sound from her phone. In fact she did not have a phone with her.

One other thing that our cover model displayed to us throughout our 6 hours encounter was how gracious she is. She has that graciousness in both her name and manners and deserves

to be commended.

We took our hat off to Grace Benjasiriwan for being different and we hope her story can set an

Grown up & Full of Grace she’d learnt to be a simple, grounded & very gracious young woman

It is such pleasure for Sawasdee Australia Magazine to be able to introduce our new cover model of this edition, Grace Siriya Benjasiriwan. The aspects of privilege to get to meet this young woman and hear her story first hand are many: Grace is beautiful and intelligent young woman. She is a daughter of a well-known Thai female Member of Parliament who is also a former famous actress, Nattaya Benjasiriwan (Dangbu-Nga), of whom Grace has every right to boast and claim to fame of her mothers’ success, but Grace remains very humble about it. She is also amongst few social media holdout that refuse to spend hours and hours of her free time posting photos of herself, the food she eat and places she went to and expect hundreds of followers to like or comments on her posts. In our conversation with her comments on different things, Grace has many intereting lessons she’d learnt to share. Stories from her childhood and upbringing, to her direct experience from when she had an opportunity to follow her mother on an election campaign tour and how she changed her mindset about her mother political career when her mother had won the election. Above all, Grace shared with us who she is as a person from the outcome of the choices she made for herself so she’d learnt to be a simple, grounded and very gracious young woman.

As a kid, what did you want to be when you didn’t quite like the idea, but I think it was because she thought she wasn’t ready to let go grew up? off her baby girl just yet (laugh). I could have Although my parents raised me up to have chosen America or Europe to study and my choices, but one thing my mother didn’t want family would have supported me too. me to have as a choice for my career was for me to get into entertainment or film industry like her. But I choose Australia and I choose to study I respect that and I am not interested either. I English language at EIP in the Gold Coast want to grow up and do well in life. I am lucky to because I think Gold Coast is a unique city with have my parents as the best role model in a lot of opportunity to offer. It’s a small and very making my own choices of what I want to do. My safe city with good environment and clean air, father is a successful businessman and my not too big to travel around but big enough to mother is the best role model in what she was find part time work during my study. doing. I enjoy the freedom my parents give me in making my own decision what to do in life. Has your mother changed her idea after letting you come to Australia? Is coming to study English in Australia one of the choices you made? and why? I think she has. I talk to her nearly everyday and on our recent exchange on some ideas after she heard what Yes, very much so. When I told my mother that I I had to say she said to me “Oh, you have grown up wanted to go and study overseas though, she so much!” which made me very proud of myself.

WHY EIP ?

Tell us about your journey to come to study with EIP? It was very simple, I chose EIP because it has very good variety of courses that I can select which suit the purposes of what I want to do here. EIP also has a very good student support team that help students from overseas to fit in with a new study overseas lifestyle. I am very happy with the choice that I made and with the school. For the visa and paperwork, I was lucky that it was very simple and straightforward, I contacted my student agent and with the help of Walun Apiratkasem at Fenson Lawyer & Co, I got a student visa granted very quickly. How do you find your lifestyle different to when you live in Bangkok? Very different! I am happy and very independent here. Back in Thailand, my family was very protected me from traveling alone to places even to university. Understandably, the big city with heavy traffic like Bangkok could prevent you from doing too many activities in one day so I had very limited freedom to do things on my own. My lifestyle is almost stress free here. I go to school, after that, I have free time to enjoy my free hours at nice café, cinema, read books, and catch up with friends. Then I go to work to earn my pocket money. After work I go to a small and cosy gym called “Wickedbodz” near Cavil Avenue where I enjoy my workout every night until I feel tired so I go home to rest and ready for a new day. You are also a serious workout and eat clean girl? Yes, I am a gym freak (laugh). I like working out and like to keep fit. It’s not only made me feel confident but it is also teaching me about a simple discipline rules in life. When you follow strict workout regime that you set for yourself, you see the result straightaway, the toned body, the strong legs, carve shoulder muscles and especially good and positive energy I have, is all a result of my regular exercise and eat healthy. Why are you not on any social medias?

I used to have an account or two in the past but I think it wasted my time so I deleted them. Who is your role model? Both my parents are my role models. Especially my mother who is the one to set the best example of a woman I wanted to be. She is a go-getter type and she achieved so much in what she does. What books do you read? I like to read how-to books. It offers me very realistic approaches that I can pick up and choose to follow that best suit me. I get to learn a lot from reading this kind of book. What is your plan after your graduation from EIP? I haven’t decided yet which university I would choose to further my higher degree, at the moment I am just enjoying studying at EIP, make friends with fellow students from different parts of the world and learn to exchange cultures with each other. Behind the scenes

We take you behind the scenes of the cover shoot with Brisbane-based photographer Dale McMillan. There was no fancy studio on the shoot that day, but it was Dale's very own detailed setup, including stack of shooting gears and all of what he prepared aimed for a high-end editorial piece as shown on our cover. All of us were pretty new to each other, especially model, photographer and our very own makeup artist Jim Jirarnuttaruj, have never worked together before, so at the beginning it was a little challenging to get to know and tune in together. Through the story he was asked to create, Dale set the lighting, backdrop and many tested shots before taking the real shots. It's great to see they all had their own creative input. With helpful hand and tips from our talented makeup artist who stayed back to watch the shoot and suggested few posses for our model to try, it help ease the excitement and nervousness off our new model Grace Benjasiriwan on her first time big gig. Finally we got the rhythm right, the chemical mixed well and time did fly. After 6 hours, our work from concept to completion blended well through Dale's lenses, we got the result just how we wanted it. It's refreshing to see that not one hand was wasted in creating this perfect cover. It's really proven that in the making of our perfect magazine like this, collaboration is really is a key.

International students brush up on Brisbane

Lord Mayor Graham Quirk welcomed 5000 international students at the largest city-orientation event of its kind in Australia. Student from more than 60 countries attended Study Brisbane's City Welcome Festival at the City Botanic Gardens. The four-hour festival program of live music, student exhibitions and cultural activities marked the start of a new year for international students in Brisbane. Cr Quirk said Brisbane's reputation as one of the friendliest cities in the world, coupled with an enviable outdoor lifestyle, was helping to drive the city's biggest export. "Only last month, our New World City was named the 20th best city in the world for international students by the QS Best Student cities 2017 index" he said. The Study Brisbane Program facilitated by Brisbane Marketing aims to enhance international students' experience in Brisbane and works with universities, state and private schools, vocational education and training providers and English language collages to promote the high standard of education in the city.

Honorary Consul’s Roundup – January-Febuary 2016 It’s my pleasure to wish everyone a happy new year. I trust that 2017 will be a healthy and successful one for all in Queensland’s Thai community. At the heart of every community’s purpose is the welfare of its people. Our Thai community here in Queensland is no different. We are seeing the size of our community grow each year – through both Thais moving from Sydney and Melbourne to Queensland and also Thais of course moving direct from Thailand. From time to time we will all encounter Thais in Queensland who need our support. Perhaps they have lost a loved one, been in an accident or suffered from domestic violence or been a victim of other crimes. Since I have been the Honorary Consul I have been amazed by the generosity of Thais willing to help those in need. People with good hearts have been generous in donating and also co-ordinating donations. It is important that everyone in the community has confidence that should they be donating funds to those in the community in need, those funds are administered with transparency and openness. With this in mind, this year I will be leading the establishment and organisation of a Thai Welfare Association in Queensland. For some years now, Victoria’s Thai community has supported a similar organisation with great success. It is my hope that together we can create something equally successful and worthwhile here in Queensland. Respected and trusted members and supporters of the Thai Community will be asked to support me in this endeavour and to lend their hard work, trust and goodwill to make this organisation successful. At this early stage, may I invite those in the community who are interested in assisting in the creation of this organisation to contact me directly to discuss their involvement.

Welcome to Thai Airways new Managing Director for Queensland and the Northern Territory Finally, on behalf of the Thai community in Queensland, may I warmly welcome Thai Airways new General Manager Khun Chawarit Thanasombatnanth and his family to our community. Thai Airways has been such a wonderful supporter of many Thai community events here over the years, enabling the raising of much needed funds for many diverse community needs. Congratulations to Khun Chawarit on his appointment in this role, and we wish he and Thai Airways much success in Queeensland.

Brisbane Thai Festival 2017 Our Thai Australia Association of Queensland (TAAQ) has done a magnificent job over the last three years running the Brisbane Thai Festival. While last years Festival was again a great success, the November day on which the Festival was held was extremely hot and this made it quite uncomfortable for both spectators and food and drink sellers and performers alike. I am delighted that TAAQ will again put their efforts into the 2017 Brisbane Thai Festival, which will be brought forward to Sunday the 3rd of September – a lovely month of weather in Brisbane. I wish TAAQ all their best in their preparations in showcasing the magnificent Thai culture.

Vietnamese bound to third countries arrive Bangkok in 1982. https://www.unhcr.or.th

All of these world-changing events were happening around me, but I was more immediately affected by the trials and tribulations of family and village life. Raising livestock was extremely difficult for my father, who was both inexperienced and lacked sufficient funds to adequately support the endeavor. He had a dream but not the practical knowledge or planning ability to be able to realize it. In just a few years, all the family savings and retirement money that he brought from Bangkok had been depleted. I could tell that he was frustrated and unhappy, but he never expressed his worries to us children, and he and Mom never argued in front of us. I learned later from Mom that they did quarrel a lot during this period, and she would cry every day, concerned about her five school-age children. My parents had to look for an alternative livelihood, and that’s how we ended up moving to Yasothon town, and things changed again.

“Roselle Leaves Curry” “Roselle Leaves Curry” is one of the most popular menus in Burmese Communities. My students used to say to me “Teacher, I could live anywhere on this earth, where it has got roselle leaves for me to cook. I don’t know how to live without the roselle leaves”. These short sentences of my students reminded me of myself as a child of Lao E-sarn1 ; I could live anywhere on this planet as long as there is Somtom Plaa Raa (Papaya Salad with fermented fish sauce) and Khoaw Neaw (Glutinous Rice). So I think “Roselle Leaves Curry” for Burmese people made similar impact on their lives as what Somtom Plaa Raa and Khoaw Neaw made for Lao E-sarn people. When I was a volunteer teacher, I liked to walk around to see my students’ lunches during lunch break. I often got an opportunity to taste my students’ lunch as well (which is very nice lol) - guess what was the most popular menu among my Burmese students? Yes, it’s Roselle Leaves Curry with prawn! I noticed that most of my students had this menu all the time. I think why they had meal cook with prawn in it most of the time was because their family members work at the prawn peeling factories. I guess living in the house next to the prawn-peeling factory gave them the benefit of access to cheap fresh prawns.

Painted a blank slate A one-year experience teaching Burmese children Aksarapacharah Harnmontri

Let’s see the ingredients; 1. Roselle leaves 2.Shrimp paste 3.Shallot 4.Fresh Chili 5.Fresh prawn (or pork) 6. Bamboo shoot

Add marinated prawn and cook for about 5 minutes. 7. Add fresh chili to taste. E-sarn is the north-east region of Thailand, the local culture, tradition and dialects of this region are very similar to Laos. 4
