Editor’s inbox We often see Serena Denis at different social function or activities in her outfit with a touch of Thainess in it. In this edition we ask her to wear Thai Traditional dress to be featured on our cover and she was most happy to do so. It’s also to coincide with the celebration of the Thai traditional New Year and Songkran Festival, which was celebrated within the Thai community worldwide throughout the month of April. The Thai community in Brisbane led by The Thai-Australian Association in Queensland (TAAQ) in collaboration with the Royal Thai Consulate office in Brisbane also extend its celebration of Thainess to organize the Thai Harmony Night on June 10, for more details, please read inside. Our ultimate objective is to make a constructive and positive contribution to our community. If you have valuable contents/images or know the whereabouts of any newsworthy sources, we would love to hear from you.

Not just
a pretty face An interview with Serena Denis In real life, Serena Denis is a mother, a homemaker and a hard worker who earns an honest living. In social life, she is a role model who inspires many of her friends and followers and is judged by how many fans she has on her social media pages. Her new role as a representative from Thailand to contest in a title at the Lady of Brilliancy International beauty pageant in Taipei, prompted our interest to have this interview SA: When and where did your beauty pageant journey begin? Serena: A long time ago in Thailand, they were however only on small stages, at different events here and there. One significant pageant, which I competed in, was the Miss Noppamas of Patumtani province. From then on, I participated in many contests but it got a bit too much. I started to do some modelling work. My agent secured me advertisement work and brand endorsement jobs, which paid good money and was more fun than doing beauty pageant contests. I was a brand image for few products such as Citibank credit card, Robinson Department store and others. I also did some fashion shoots and modelling work. Modelling and advertising work kept me busy and I didn’t really enter many more beauty contests. The funny thing was that my father didn’t know anything about the part time work that I did, until he saw the brochure of Citibank Credit Card, so that was a little bit of a problem. However, it was more than just a part time job which I enjoyed doing, I also contributed money I earned to support my family. I paid for my own car at the age of 17. SA: Were your family very supportive of you in the beauty pageant contest? Serena: Not really. My father was a policeman, so he’s quite strict. He didn’t like me

working in the industry and always wanted me to find a decent job with steady income. My mother was okay about it I guess (laugh). SA: What is the most rewarding thing about being a contestant in a beauty pageant? Serena: I must say friendship. I have made many good friends who became my extended family. We keep in touch and get to see each other whenever we can, even though we live so far apart. In fact, the agency that asked me to join the first edition of the Lady of Brilliancy is an agency, which I’ve worked with before in many contests. When we started talking about this upcoming event, we already had trust and confidence in each other, so we easily agreed to start working together on this new project. SA: You lead a very busy life, with family, work and social commitments. What made you want to enter into beauty pageants again? Serena: I believe I still have what it takes to try again. I have achieved a lot in what I have set my mind to and to a certain extent I am ready to try pageants at the international level. The plus side is that I have worked with this agency before and we know what we have to offer for a chance to win the title.

SA: From many years of experience in the beauty contest, entertainment or modelling industry, what was the lesson you learnt? Serena: Every stage and each contest is different in many aspects. Sometimes you think you are well prepared, but it wasn’t enough for the final, and in reality, for that contest you could never have prepared enough. I learnt that as long as I have prepared to the best of my ability, it is ok to lose. Everyone can prepare to win something, but when you not the most beautiful women on a stage, it’s ok too. Losing in a competition is also a part of that competition. I learnt that rejection is part of life. SA: What do you think are the best qualities of a beauty pageant contestant?
C
Serena: I think the best quality is to have a good attitude. You can’t just be pretty and expect to win a beauty contest. We often think that in the beauty pageants the judges will be all looking for “beauty” or who is the most beautiful woman on the stage. I do believe that there is beauty in every contestant. When a woman dresses up in her most high fashion gown in an attempt to win the crown, she is beautiful in her own ways. Important qualities include having a good heart, good attitude and to respect everyone around you.

SA: What do you think they are looking for in the upcoming Lady of Brilliancy? Serena: The contestant has to be a married woman, with children and has a career. I meet these criteria and I feel I have all that they are looking for. I have very good support from all of my sponsors, friends and above all from my family. SA: Your two biggest supporters would be your daughter and your husband? Serena: Yes, apart from my sponsors, which I thank them wholeheartedly, I have to thank both my husband and my daughter for their support and understanding. This is a chapter in my life, which I wouldn’t be able to do it without their support.

Thai Airways International introduced four weekly direct flights to Vienna since late last year with connections to/from flights from Australia. Austria's capital offers a unique blend of imperial traditions, stunning modern architecture and is famous for its cultural events, imperial sights, coffee houses, cozy wine taverns and the very special Viennese charm. Vienna is a gateway to a country offering a seemingly endless choice of activities for visitors, no matter how active or leisurely the itinerary is planned to be. Throughout the year, there is an enviable list of events and celebrations throughout the city, not least the beautiful Christmas markets, found in almost every town across the country. We were fortunate to be invited to visit an extraordinary home. The owner’s philanthropic and energetic nature has made him an active member of the Sunshine Coast community and its Thai community in which he assists when he can from his busy schedule.
Fifteen minutes from Noosa, perched up on the hilltop of Eumundi, rests a natural haven with bucolic landscape, where simplicity and privacy go hand in hand. Passing through the meticulously laid artisan, black granite stonewalls and grey rendered wall frames the entrance, for a grand welcome. The excellent contrast with Italian pencil pine and the landscape conveys a calm energy. They say first impression is key to good design - this home has achieved that task from the very first moment. Continuing onto the property, the winding paved road along the sides of steep slopes, takes visitors along a panoramic driveway of the expansive thirty plus acres. Closer to the house entrance, there along both sides of the road, presents itself a bamboo forest. The young trees have created a natural tunnel of cascading shoots over the road, blocking any view of the house. A sense of mystery, and excitement were felt at the same time, pulls you in and for that brief moment, it was like going through a time zone, where the light dims, and the temperature cools that attracts with organic energy. As the tunnel ends, a view of clear blue skies welcomes you. There was a sense of calm and an abundance of positive energy when entering this home. The presence of openness, transparency, and relationship to the context, achieves the welcoming feeling. The large satin black granite wall framed the entrance facade and guided you to a solid tall wooden entryway door. Its six-inch wide timber planks were methodically laid horizontally, with grooved wood grains deliberately worn in for the aged rustic appearance. Impressive in form, it magnetically draws visitors through the bold gates and up to the top of the stairs. The sun drenched wooden deck delivered a natural silvery hue to the pathway. Those four-by-four inch hardwood planks were placed across the walk path, stand bold as a sculptural element, a convergence to the sleek white stucco structure and landscape. The sophisticated refinement, of classic modernist principles presented minimalist poetic space of less is more.
This geometrical architecture resonates the owner with a sense of timelessness, calmness, and emotional presence is captured. The open spaces and subtle outbursts of creativity, accented by the luxurious monochromatic tones and textures were deliberately executed to manipulate light on the natural finishes. The expansive ceilings reached 3.6 metres high floods sunlight inwards, captivating the serene warm quality throughout the home.
abundance of sunbed area to capture the sun and scenic views that seemed therapeutic.
The house entrance corridor was alluring as the owner and his partner welcomed us. The gradual walk up a wooden bridge over a black tiled pond, that navigates you to seven freestanding stucco white geometric progressive, symmetrical u-shaped white concrete beams. It allows enough space for natural light to traverse and penetrate on the walls and ceilings of the beams. On the alternating small pebble washed floor, decorative grasses were simply and deliberately placed for spatial modernity of free spirit sensibility. There was anticipation for the interior to match its surrounding landscape that captivates positively for 180 degrees of qualitative sense of wellbeing. There is an emphasis on sustainability, intended for emission reduction, renewable energy, and utilizing the natural water source from the land.
It is impressive to see the generous budget that went into the bathroom designs. These rooms are still works in progress, and there are plans to add minor details for the perfect balance between refined materials and the perfect selection of accessories. Every little detail from the lighting to the accessories has the owner’s personal design touch, especially the circular mirror’s warm light that accentuates any face and makes the experience unique and memorable.
The interior provides three floors that consist of the ground floor containing the entrance foyer with plans for a grand piano that will boldly set the tone for the home of a music producer/entrepreneur. We were privileged and impressed by hearing the owner’s variety of musical talents. The living room encouraged by the tranquil view of the surrounding landscape, is an area to enjoy entertaining, laughing, and being carefree with friends. The furniture selections linearity, clean shapes and symmetry, draws the passion in designing a modern home that is the extension of the owner’s style, reflecting subtle traces that intensifies the senses, for a memorable visit. The open kitchen and pantry’s glossy white cabinetry hides all appliances. The outdoor living terrace was design with modern transitional furniture. This encouraged outdoor living, complimented with the oversized high gloss framed Rasch sofa in an L-shaped configuration allows full view of the mountains from any seating position. The black granitetiled pool utilizes mineral water sourced from the natural spring on the property. There is an
The fully equipped recording studio is positioned to view the pristine landscape and to deliver inspirational vibrancy. Each and every bedroom has romantic views of the mountains that intensifies the senses and its privacy is priceless. There were LED strip lights embedded in the walls to playfully light the hallway.
The basement holds the gym, home theater, two large car garages and a laundry area. The stairs leading up to the first floor was designed for artistic appreciation, and allowing our minds to interpret it into a labyrinth, where up and down can be one. The glass handrails allowed visual pleasure. At the top of the first level is the office that allows every window a purpose to exploit the views in sequencing natural art, playful for our eyes and refining the house’s sculptural quality. The spacious master suite has lucid openings, for the most magical view of the mountains. The large walk-in closet is fit for a king and alarge bathroom, double modern sinks, rain shower and a large circular Agape freestanding bathtub, that stands in front of a large picturesque window. There is a large lotus and lily pond at the bottom of the steep grassed hill that would impress Monet. A cascading waterfall has been designed to intentionally hum the water falling down intentionally laid rocks for a Zen ambience with a meticulous landscape supplying natural spring water so delicious and cold. And not to mention, gold dust was found while cleaning the water filter! Perhaps that is the secret to the owner’s youthful looks and abundance of energy. Being a successful music producer/entrepreneur, his busy lifestyle can be nonstop, and this home was created as a place for rejuvenation and inspiration.

Reaching the end of the Italian King of Fashion era in our motel, every life in the number one hotel of Manhattan Island New York is still marching on. I was nominated to join the team of butlers for Mr.EJ, the genius of the music world, which is the toughest and most challenging team in the hotel. Other than the fact that he's a legend of the music world and ranked as the wealthiest muscian in the world, in real life he is living the most luxurious life in the world, surpassing any Sultans or billionaires from any country on the planet. Before taking the evaluation test, we all received his biography to study thoroughly first, as much as 20 pages. We need to be notified 2 days before his arrival. Before he arrives, we must learn what he likes and dislikes from the time he opens his eyes until he closes them. We have to prepare everything while he sleeps and it has to be ready for him when he wakes. Four butlers are required to take care of his needs 24 hours a day. All four of us were appointed into different shifts and each person has to be rotated to another shift, until everyone has got a chance to work in every shift. In an early period of working with the team, I was assigned the preparation tasks, which involved scrupulously preparing his suite, as defined by 10 pages of instructions. The other three butlers attended to his personal requests. I always got the night shift when Mr.EJ was sleeping. Before Mr.EJ has checked in, all his necessities and personal belongings must be shifted by air from Beverly Hills, which is the headquarters of his company. There are around 6 to 7 big boxes for us to set up for him to use comfortably as if he is living in his own home. The most important thing is his vitamin bottles, hundreds of them. We have to
arrange vitamins for him, three times a day and again just before bed (30 to 40 tablets per meal). Mr.EJ wouldn't eat futile food. Every product had to be fat free, sugar free and caffeine free. The food in the fridge such as lean ham and fresh fruit had to be freshly replaced 3 times a day, even though he hadn't touch them. Mr.EJ remembers everything, whether it is fresh or not. Three butlers from noble land failed at the same time, because they neglected what seem to be tiny details, but it was unforgiveable for Mr.EJ. When shifts were rotated, the three again made the same mistakes, such as set out wrong vitamins, disorderly arrange newspapers or serving Mr.EJ with tap water. Although tap water in New York is drinkable, he only drinks Evian mineral water. If it is a normal hotel, those mistakes could have been retrievable, however for the King of music, the number one guest of the best hotel in New York, even though the three butlers were from the same country as Mr.EJ, they were all immediately dismissed. I was the only foreigner in the team, but I was very humble. I was raised in a way as a fine Thai lady. You wake up before your man and go to sleep after him. That’s what my mother taught me, my mother is a fine lady from head to toe. So my dear Thai fans, you’d be proud of me that I am the only butler who succeeded, where a team of British butlers failed (one from Chelsea, one from Manchester United and one from Arsenal). I was the one chosen to become Mr.EJ's private personal butler.

WE: How was your childhood like, were you born in Thailand? TH: I was born in a small town called Swindon in England from a working class family. Growing up, I used to sit and watch movies, watch the Oscars admiring people like Robert De Niro, Leonardo DiCaprio and thinking how amazing a life like that would be. But I was also thinking it would be out of reach as I was from a small town in the English countryside, I was aware that my dream might be too far to reach. The reality was, that I only did drama at school to help boost my confidence. I was a very shy kid growing up, loved to study and I enjoyed acting. My parents had wanted me to go to university to study further but it was something that I never wanted to do. My biggest passion in life was marine biology and journalism. I'm a massive ocean fan so the dream job was to work in the water and surround myself by marine life.
WE: How did you get into acting? TH: I suppose a moment that really had an impact on my life was when Dustin Hoffman spotted me at an event and said to me that I should work on camera. To have someone of that stature acknowledge you and see something in you was a surreal moment and gave me a confidence that anyone can pursue their dreams. And I did. I've flown to Australia, LA, Israel, Italy, Japan for work and most importantly, I've had the incredible opportunity to work as an actor and model in Thailand. WE: Does the Thainess in you play a big role in your success in Hollywood? TH: I'm very proud of my Thai heritage and have wanted to really put my stamp as an ethnic minority entertainer in Hollywood. In a time when diversity is at the top of political
issues, it's great to see so many diverse ethnicities leading cinema and there aren't many Asian actors at the forefront of that. My mosquitos and uneven paths. All whilst wearing heavy army gear and holding guns. It was tough, but hopefully the authenticity shows when the movie is released. The workout preparation for the movie was insane. We trained with a US marine and did the training schedules that the marines had to go through. Hundreds of press ups, drills and drop and rolls. That type of intensity was what I commend all the servicemen and women for. Probably the highlight of my career so far is being able to take my mother to the premiere of 'The Maze Runner: The Death Cure' this year. She was so excited to walk the red carpet. This Thai lady who never thought she'd be at an event like that. It was a pretty special moment for me. My mother is my biggest supporter.

WA: You travel a lot with your work of Bangkok. And on the downtime and live in different countries, is Thai- when I wasn't shooting, I'd make trips to the beaches. I'm a big fan of land home to you? islands down south - I visited Krabi TH: Living in Thailand was a blessing. and Phi Phi Islands and loved it. The I've fallen in love with the country and water is so beautiful and sands so the people. I spent so much time in white. I would love to work on a Thai Bangkok and have met a variety of TV series and speak in Thai. It will be people, some I will have in my life something different but will be forever. I can speak Thai and it gave rewarding. I don't look typically Thai me great opportunity to really use my but I'll keep trying to prove myself in Thai everyday. TH: I take my work very seriously. I'm still young and there's so much more To me there's nothing else better than I need and am willing to learn. than eating street food whilst walking Everyday is a school day and every around in the evenings when it's still time I work on a set or go to an audiwarm. I'm not a drinker so bars aren't tion is something I learn more about typically my go to place. It’s refresh the film industry and myself. ing to be able to do other things at night. Swimming in rooftops late in the evening and exploring the city were some of my favourite memories
I'm a work in progress and I'll work very hard to get where I want to be. My parents both work two jobs so I have been instilled with family value
to work hard to get where I want to be. I don't do exactly as they say, but I do as they do. So putting in that blood, sweat and tears in acting business is a lesson I've learnt from them. I've just finished my first foreign language film in Italy. I'll continue to make my mark in modelling and acting. I'm an entertainer at heart and I love to entertain. I have a business in the UK called Mini Siam Oriental Foods, which sells Thai groceries. Who knows what the future holds but I'm always open to working with like-minded individuals and creative spirits. I want to help produce good content. International students ‘live the dream’ and showcase Brisbane to world Brisbane’s luckiest international students will start living the Aussie dream, with 44 new faces set to become official Brisbane ambassadors to showcase the city as one of the best places in the world to live, study and play. Chairman for Finance and Economic Development Cr Krista Adams said 44 international students from 30 countries would be appointed Brisbane’s ambassadors for the next 12 months at a special ceremony this morning. “Being a Brisbane ambassador is one of the best ways to experience our city, from its cuddly koalas and river adventures to its unique outdoor lifestyle,” Cr Adams said. “More than 85,000 international students enrol to study in Brisbane each year and this year 44 of those will get to experience some of the city’s thrilling sporting fixtures, red carpet events, native wildlife encounters and island escapes.” Cr Adams said international education was worth $3 billion to Brisbane’s economy, and it was vital the city continue to be showcased as a world-class place to live and study. 4
“The task for this year’s ambassadors will be to broadcast their stay in Brisbane to more than 226,000 people through the Study Brisbane Facebook page and their own social media accounts,” she said. “For the first time, we are welcoming international students from New Caledonia and South Africa as ambassadors, helping the city reach wider markets than ever before. “Sharing Brisbane’s wonderful attractions, lifestyle and events generates increased interest in our city among those from overseas considering international study. “The ambassadors are always ready to promote Brisbane and several of last year’s students provided translations for a new Study Brisbane Spanish-language website aimed at reaching out to the growing Latin American market. “The ambassador pages on the new site drew in 20,000 page views, a video about the ambassadors secured 62,000 views and the students have contributed to blogs about their lives studying and living in Brisbane. “This has played a huge role in contributing to the strength of our international
student education sector, and helped to attract 28 per cent more students from Latin America over the past year.” Cr Adams said other duties have included helping to profile Brisbane by hosting high-school study groups, education agent tours and welcome work-experience students here on exchange. “The ambassadors will also welcome incoming international students at Brisbane International Airport and team up with the Brisbane Greeters to help orientate new students around their new home.” Cr Adams said 40 of this year’s ambassadors were studying at higher-education institutions, while four were studying at local high schools.
