interview with

Walun Apiratkasem

The One to Watch Walun Apiratkasem is a

migration agent at Fenson & Co Lawyers.

His commitment in his roles and responsibilities is to help clients to live, to work, and to settle in their new lives in Australia.

Please tell us about yourself Where should I begin? I was born in LA California, while my both parents studying their master’s degree. We then moved back to Thailand after they graduated,. When I was about 11 years old, our family migrated to Australia. I had a pretty average childhood in Australia. I studied at Bond University in the Gold Coast. Who is your role model? My parents, my bosses and my friends. There wouldn’t be enough room to talk about anything else if I were to talk about them all. What you do when you have time to relax? I love hanging out with my friends, a small game of golf, a catch-up lunch, or going to movies. I also love listening to music, anything that is not too noisy. I’m surprisingly a sucker for sad love songs. 6

You have spent some times in Japan, why did you go there and what did you do? My first experience with Japanese culture came in the form of a blue robotic cat – Doraemon. It’s the robot of 22nd century. I will never forget the time when my grandpa took me to a video store for the first time and introduced me to the world of Doraemon. Together we watch the video for hours on end. My grandpais no longer with me today, but I am reminded of him every time I watch Doraemon.

Failure is the foundation of success old Japanese proverbs from Doraemon

So I went there simply because I wanted to see Doraemon’s world and experience the things I saw in my favorite anime in real life.

As to what I did there? I was an English teacher there for 2 years – it was the one of the best life experiences. I had wonderful colleagues and amazing students. I made lifelong friends. If my life were an adventure book, Japan’s chapter would be the happiest chapter in it. I really feel that I have grown in the 2 years. I have learned to be independent, learned that a smile is the best form of communication, and learned to adapt to a new culture. It was so great. But like everything else in life, all good things must come to an end, my adventure in Japan ended on a high note and I am so grateful of that opportunity. Your career as a migration agent, what are the most important relationships you have in your work? I think there are three types of work relationships that are equally important and they are revolving around trust: 1) The relationship with my boss, at Fenson & Co

Mechai Viravaidya Foundation Like many people who take the name Cabbages and Condoms at face value, may feel reluctant to enter a restaurant with such a name. I had the opportunity to go there and see for myself what it was all about! The ambience, the service and the exceptional taste of the food was popular, and bustling with tourists. It is a must visit, even for a family with children. Walking down to the back of the restaurant, there sat at a very large conference table, a smart looking gentleman in a scholar suit with his distinguished bowtie, hard at work in preparing a presentation on his foundation. Mechai Viravaidya’s, the condom advocate, Thailand Cabinet Spokesman, and a Senator has a striking height, that must be a combination from his Scottish mother and Thai father, both doctors from Edinburgh. Having a privileged upbringing at Geelong Grammar School, Trinity College and the University of Melbourne, he returned to Thailand to work in family planning, making condoms taboos a norm in the rural areas. In 1974, Mechai Viravaidya began Population and Community Development Association (PDA), improving the rural poor. livelihood . ‘The aim is to empower the community and to turn the poor into barefoot entrepreneurs’. It was a great honour to have the opportunity to interview Mechai Viravaidva, his Hon. Dr. Mechai Viravaidya openness and work ethics, paired with his CV, was exceptionally impressive. Being in the presence of true philanthropy, utilizing humor and innovation, he displayed in restaurants the perseverance of students who’s artistic creation were adorned with condoms. It was humorous to see , that being his aim to make people feel more comfortable and not shy to talking or using condoms to protect oneself from diseases or even death. The HIV/AIDS epidemic in the 80s launched major prevention programs that resulted in a decline of 90% in new infections, saving an estimated 7.7 million lives, according to the World Bank. This action saved the government over USD$18 billion in treatment costs . The results of a sustainable population growth rate for Thailand, had been reduced to 0.6% by 2005 (There is an average of under two children per family). Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant Financial sustainability for PDA and an additional 18 for profit companies were established to assist in funding the non-profit organisation. The popular Cabbages and Condoms Restaurant chain, the Birds & Bees Resort in Pattaya, Population and Development International (PDI), The Village Development Partnership (VDP), The Mechai Pattana School, The Green Village Toy Library (VTL), Business for Rural Education and Development (BREAD), Real Estate and Manufacturing businesses are amoung these organisations that fund to conduct further rural development . In 1999 Mechai Viravaidya was appointed UNAIDS Ambassador. There has been numerous awards, recognition, and honorary doctoral degrees given, as well as the United Nations Gold Peace Medal (1981), the Ramon Magsaysay Award for Public Service (1994), one of Asiaweek’s “20 Great Asians” (1995), the United Nations Population Award (1997), and one of TIME Magazine’s “Asian Heroes” (2006). Together with PDA, Mechai Viravaidva have been the recipient of the Bill and Melinda Gates Award for Global Health in 2007, the Skoll Awardees for Social Entrepreneurship in 2008, and the Prince Mahidol Award for Public Health in 2009. In 2008, the Bamboo School - known as School-based Integrated Rural Development Program (School BIRD), strive for a new generation to perform to their full potential with honesty, capability/entrepreneaurship, and socially-conscious students. Mechai Viravaidya is married to Thanphuying Putrie Viravaidya, His Majesty the King's Deputy Principal Private Secretary, and they have one daughter, Sujima Viravaidya. Mechai and two grandchildren, Mek and Mok, who both sponsor a village in Northeastern Thailand through the VDP. True story

The Interpreter’s journal Mom’s Place Benjawan Poomsan Becker After two years in the village, Dad’s livestock farm hadn’t worked out, and the family – which by now had grown to seven – needed a new source of income. Mom had always been a good cook, and she’d observed that her sister was making a reasonable income with her restaurant in town. So a decision was made to move into town and for Mom to start her own small restaurant. Taking care of the extended family is important in Thai society, so when it came time to move into town, my maternal grandfather gave a piece of land to my parents for the restaurant. Initially a modest building was erected to house the business, and Mom commuted from the village each day until she got established. After a while, the building was extended, with a space in the back for us to live in. We still kept the farmland, but Dad grew vegetables now instead of raising livestock. We also used the farm as a getaway place in the countryside. With less than ten folding metal tables and plastic chairs, the restaurant was unpretentious, down to earth. It was sandwiched between my aunt’s more elaborate establishment and my uncle’s successful auto body shop. Mom served Lao food and noodle

dishes – traditional fast food. It was different from the Central Thai dishes that my aunt served next door in her fancy place with its long list of dishes on the menu. So there wasn’t any real competition between Mom and her. Besides, Aunt’s eatery was well established, with fancy decor and an air-conditioned room, while Mom’s didn’t even have a sign or a name. But it was affordable, and the noodles and Lao dishes were a hit with the customers. Mom’s place was just off Route 23, the main road through town, at one of the prime spots on Jangsanit Road. As they say, location is everything, and we were just across the street from a Shell gas station that served as a main bus stop for people changing buses and traveling on to other towns and provinces. Travelers made it a point to dash over to Mom’s place and gobble down some tasty noodles before their connecting bus arrived. There were quite a few other food stalls in the area, but with so many people waiting to catch buses, all the proprietors seemed to make a good living. As in many towns, the bus terminal in Yasothon was near the central market, but the buses would stop in front of the gas station to pick up the last passengers before heading out of town. The area was busy from early morning till night, so Mom served food from about 8:30 a.m. to 8:00 p.m. seven days a week.

“Brisbane attracts about 75,000 enrolments from international students each year and the city welcomes every one of them,” he said. “Study Brisbane provides a connection for the thousands of young people from 160 countries who choose Brisbane as their second home during a very exciting stage of their lives.

“Our ambassadors will experience the best Brisbane has to offer and use social media to share and profile their lives as students in Brisbane with their peers, networks, families and potential students back home. “Combined, the ambassadors have an audience of more than 67,000 on social media in addition to the 160,000-plus followers on Study Brisbane’s Facebook page.

“Study Brisbane not only puts out the welcome mat, it constantly searches for ways to help students connect with our city, improve their study experience and further their goals and ambitions.” The ambassadors’ roles will see them enjoy many quintessential Brisbane experiences, volunteer at multicultural events and assist with hosting official visiting delegations.
