Editor’s inbox In Thailand, 12th August is celebrated as the birthday of Her Majesty Queen Sirikit. Her Majesty is regarded as a mother of the nation as she has captured the hearts of Thai people through her devotion toward welfare and wellbeing of her people, so since 1976, this day has been celebrated as 'Mother's Day’.

For the Thai tradition, children kneel down before their mother to show their love and gratitude. The white jasmine flowers or garlands will be presented to mother (and or mother figures in the family). In return, mother shower her blessings on her children.

The white jasmine flowers are a common sight in Thailand. They are the symbol of purity of mother's true love, which will never change. Charitable activities, donations, offering to monks are also an important part of the day to express child's love and gratitude towards mother.

Both of our covers stories of this edition intend to honor mothers, maternal bonds, mother’s duties, her responsibilities, the endless love she has for her children and the influence of mothers in the society.

We wish all mothers on earth a very happy every day.

Honorary Consul’s Roundup – August 2017 Queenslanders investing in Thailand In late July, senior Thai Board of Investment officers visited Brisbane to encourage Queensland firms to invest into Thailand. I was able to join the delegation as we visited a few large Brisbane based businesses already investing or starting to invest into Thailand. Clontarf-based ‘Fibre King’ has been manufacturing hi-tech packaging machinery near Rayong for 4 years whilst Seventeen Mile Rocks based battery storage manufacturer Redflow is shifting its manufacturing from Mexico to Ayutthaya.

Community visits In May I visited Cairns with Thailand’s Ambassador to Australia, HE Chirachai Punkrasin. We were able to have a special dinner with local community leaders, visit Cairns’ two Thai Buddhist temples and also undertake site visits to major projects underway by Thai companies Mitr Phol and Ratch Australia. I know that Queensland’s Thai community is spread far and wide across Queensland and I will do my very best to visit everyone to learn of your issues and opportunities first hand.

Funeral Service for His Majesty King Bhumibol Adulyadej Many would know that the official Cremation and Funeral Service for His Majesty King Rama IX will be held on Thursday 26th October this year. In Australia, there will be an official ceremony in honour of His Majesty in each Capital city to be hosted by the relevant Thai Embassy or Consulate. In Queensland our ceremony will be held at 830pm on 26 October at Wat Thai Buddharam, 1 Paradise Rd, Forestdale. This timing is to coincide with the service starting at exactly the same time in Bangkok (530pm). The service is required to be conducted outdoors. Attendees are asked to dress in all black. Buddhist services in honor of the birthday of King Rama X I was delighted to join a large crowd at Wat Thai Buddharam recently to commemorate the 65th birthday of His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn. Many attendees generously donated food to share with their fellow Thai community members and an excellent day was organised by the Temple Abbott the Venerable Chonlatish Chanhorm.

Incredible Thai street art on display in Morningside I was really excited to meet with award winning Thai artist Thirawut Bunyasakseri, who is currently completing his PhD at the Queensland College of Art, Griffith University. His work has been exhibited internationally in Thailand, India and Bangladesh. Thirawut was selected by Brisbane City Council to paint a mural on what was previously a dour railway overpass in Morningside. With its beautiful traditional Thai design he has certainly created a beautiful and lasting piece of Thailand in Brisbane - the characters and actions are commonly found in monasteries in Thailand and are lifting important religious objects such as a Buddhist stupa. Queensland beef sector supporting Esan cattle growers In June I led a delegation of Queensland cattle industry professionals to join the inaugural ‘Esan Beef Expo’, which was established to help grow the beef cattle sector in Thailand to meet rapidly increasing demand. Our Queensland representatives were able to share their experiences and knowledge with Thai beef farmers over the two days at the Expo which was held in Khon Kaen, which is billing itself as Thailand’s ‘Beef City’. We also visited some cattle farms outside of Khon Kaen through which the Queensland experts were able to pass on first-hand advice to local famers.

Thai student clubs going from strength to strength Its been fantastic to see our Thai student associations at UQ, QUT and Griffith Universities growing in numbers and activity. Not only are the associations really useful in providing support and encouragement for fellow Thai students but the students are also great volunteers at our Thai community events. Recently I was able to visit the UQ Thai Students Association as they were signing up new members on campus.

‘Dok mai chan’ are crafted into a variety of flowers such as pudtaan, zinnias, champaks, roses, orchids, lilies, chabatip, chabanoo, and gardenia, but the favorite is the daffodils / Dararat, made from naturally dried banana leaves and trunks, and dried water hyacinth. The late King Bhumibol Adulyadej gave his favorite flower the daffodil to Her Majesty Queen Sirikit when they lived in France and Switzerland.

The Thai people in Australia are showing their pure love, loyalty, and respects to our late King Bhumibol Adulyadej by making dok mai chan flowers to be placed in front of the coffin. Traditionally, dok mai chan were made from fragrant wood of the kalamet trees (Mansonia gagei - mai chan hom) The tree is now protected under the Forestry Act. In recent events, corn leaves are the substitute. Buddhists believe in rebirth and the use of fragrant wood travels with the deceased in death with a lovely scent where their goodness survives.

His Majesty King Maha Vajiralongkorn, King Rama X, has offered courses in dok mai chan cremation flowers at the reception hall of the Dusit Palace and the lawns in front of the Palace. Millions of artificial flowers are put together with an incense stick and candle in preparation for our late HM King Bhumibol Adulyadej, King Rama IX’s cremation between October 25th and 29th 2017. The Daffodil symbolises rebirth and new begin nings, chivalry, love and hope.

An important tradition to remember is never to take a dok mai chan home, as you will bring sadness to yourself. One should not say they are beautiful, but rather it is nicely crafted, as it suggests your desire for death.

The First Online Interpretation and Translation Course for Thai Speakers Two decades ago I became the first Thai and Lao interpreter to be registered with the Judicial Council of California. Since then, I have gained extensive experience in both legal and medical interpretation for Thai and Lao people in Northern California, predominantly around the San Francisco Bay Area. Over the past few years, a large number of Thai people have been coming to live in the US, and the need for qualified Thai and Lao interpreters has increased dramatically. I am now so busy with assignments that I have to decline many job offers. To work as an interpreter in the courts, or other legal settings, such as in depositions, or at complicated medical procedures, interpreters must pass a rigorous examination. Many people who are interested in becoming interpreters seek my advice and request that I tutor and mentor them to become interpreters. With social media, I now receive requests from all over the world. I’m not able to teach and conduct workshops at all the different places I’ve been invited to, so I decided to team up with my fellow interpreters, who are also highly qualified, to start an online interpretation and translation course. Now anyone with the desire to study to become an interpreter can do so using their mobile device. The course also provides structured lessons for Thai people to improve their English language skills. Students should notice an increase in their English communication

skills by studying our English lessons, even if they don’t necessarily want to become interpreters. I set the price for the interpretation and translation course to make it affordable to almost anyone. Other courses for interpretation that are currently available appear to be much more expensive and out of reach for most people. Some online courses for interpreters do exist, but they are not designed specifically for Thai people. And many of the interpreting courses for Thai people are taught in universities and are not available to majority of the general public. It’s very easy to study from us on your mobile device. You only need a Facebook account and email address. When you sign up we add you to our special Facebook group and you receive links, via emails, to see the video lessons and materials. You can study or review the lessons at your convenience. It’s like having your private tutors with you all the time, and the new way of learning! Most people don’t realize that it is not required to go to a special interpretation school to become an interpreter. If you have the required skills and can interpret well, you can work as an

interpreter. For example, if you’re an engineer, you can choose to specialize in interpreting in technical or manufacturing situations. A nurse might do medical interpretation. Over the years I have personally helped dozen of people in the US become professional interpreters. They no longer have to work in Thai restaurants, or traditional Thai massage shops. Now I am able to assist online students from Europe, Australia and Thailand. For those who are not ready to study to become interpreters, but want to improve their English to a higher level, they can enroll in our General English course, which is appropriate for students of all levels. A working mum

Annie Srikijroj is a photographer for Queensland Miss Teen Australia and owner of Isabella Photography based in Mackay. Annie travels extensively to shoot for her clients and more often than not she spends her working hours away from Bella, her 5 years old daughter. Annie shares her motherhood experience and how she balances her life being a working mom. How motherhood changes you? I am not the same person I was before I had Bella. Motherhood taught me and helped me grow stronger and braver than anything I have ever done in my entire life. Motherhood encourages me to face and conquer my fears so I can show Bella that no matter what she is facing or how hard things get; she can get through it. It makes me want to be a better person, to be so much more than what I was. I knew that my life will never be my own again, which was very scary at first, but now I feel that being a mother is the most won

derful and powerful feeling ever. Everything I do, every decision I make, is not all about me. I have to more careful and thorough. It has given me concentration, patience, gentleness, compassion, humility, empathy, courage and the biggest change is “selflessness”. Motherhood has also given me purpose and new perspective in life. I get to see things in completely different ways. I am always so amazed to see how a little girl gets excited in the simplest things. She laughs at things that make little sense to me. She is very proud of the little things that

she can do by herself like dress herself up, and read or write a simple word. It has taught me that sometimes, I don’t need to seek or look for something big or too far out of reach; just a little simple thing can make me happy. With Bella’s help, I now know what my goals are, I know where I want to see myself, where I want to be, I know what I am living for. Who is your role model mother? I have two role model mothers in my life. First is my aunt and second is my mum. I grew up with my dad and my aunt. My aunt took care of me and raised me. She loves

A lot of mums give up on their passions, dreams or interests. I believe thses all need to be given up and that they can be achieved while having kids. It just needs adjustments and adaption. I was a big dreamer who wanted to pack my bags and travel places to take nice photos whenever I wanted, but since I became a mother, my life is no longer all about me. I keep those dreams alive though, hoping that one day I can do that again, but this time with Bella. It will be much more fun, memorable and valuable to us both. I am lucky that Bella understands what I do. I take her to small studio jobs whenever I can, so she gets to see how I work. She enjoys being there and gets to know a lot of the models I work with. When she sees one of my photos of a model she knows, she says “that’s your model”. I sometimes teach her how to use my camera, how the flashlight and other things work. I am happy that she sees my studio as her little playground. She also said “I want to be like you”. Sometimes I have to work out of town for a few days. Bella is in good care with my family. My dad and my aunt take really good care of her. I can’t imagine doing this without them. Technology is also a big help for me to stay connected with Bella. Knowing that no matter how far away I might be, there is a little girl waiting for me at home. When I have days off, we spend the whole day together, do anything we want to do and go anywhere we want to go. I want to make up that time for her.

me as if I am her own daughter. I didn’t have a close relationship with my mum growing up. I only got to know her and spend time with her in recent years. But I heard so much of what she has done and what she went through in her life. And for that I really adore and respect her. She is such a hard workingwoman and is a true fighter. I know it was not easy at all to have gone through a lot of things she went through, to be where she is today. Your profession requires a lot of travelling away from Bella; tell us stories about when you are not together?

What do you do together as mother–daughter things? We do everything together, share in everyday routines. We cook, bake, fun activities and play. I want her to know that I am not just her mum, but I can also be her sister or a best friend to her. Bella and I are both passionate about arts. We love drawing and painting. I have always loved the arts. I gave Bella a huge box of colouring pencils, crayons and a sketchbook. She draws something everyday and sometimes we do it together. I encourage her to use her imagination and creativity to express herself. I can see her thought processes through her drawings. It’s so amazing to see how she gets excited when she discovers and creates new things.

What’s one thing you would like non-mums to know? I adore and respect all the mums. Not all women strive to be or want to be mothers and that is ok, those who do deserve respect for their gift of love and life that they give to their child every day. It is very hard to explain how fulfilled your life feels once you are a mum. You don’t realize how empty your life really is before becoming a mum, until you actually are one. It gives life meaning and perspective. What’s the hardest part? Raising a child is the hardest part. Its not just feeding, dress them, take them to school and so forth. I am raising a humanbeing, a girl that one day will grow up to be a good quality person with respect for others and an understanding that nothing in life is free. What’s the best part? The best part is that I learnt that “unconditional love” does exist and that I now truly understand the meaning and immeasurable value of a “mother”.

'Problem-Wisdom:

Thai Art in the 1990s' showcases works by some of the most influential figures in the development of contemporary art in Thailand. The exhibition features significant works by some of the country's most celebrated artists, including Vasan Sitthiket, Araya Rasdjarmrearnsook, Pinaree Sanpitak, Chatchai Puipia and the late Montien Boonma, as well as important early contributions by key artists to emerge in that decade, such as Navin Rawanchaikul, Kamin Lertchaiprasert and Natee Utarit. Taking its title from Lertchaiprasert's 1993-95 installation Problem-Wisdom, the exhibition encompasses a range of artistic approaches operative in Thailand at the time, from social and political engagement to spiritual and meditative principles, whose resonance and influence continue to be felt today.
