Emma

Emma Drynan am a Brisbane girl born and bred. I went to Griffith University, where I am currently an immigration law lecturer and have always had a love for travel and different cultures. When I was in my early 20s, I went to China to learn Mandarin and ended up staying for four years. It was such an incredible experience and I loved being surrounded by such rich Chinese culture. Whilst I was there, I got a lot of attention because I was an Australian and many people asked me how to migrate to Australia. I developed 6

granted a partner visa but it was a long process. My own parent’s story is just one in thousands of love stories every year and it was lucky to end in a happy ending. I know that not everyone is as lucky and this is why partner visas will always have a special place in my heart. I want other couples to have a chance to start a new life in Australia with their loved ones with them.

became interested in languages. When I came back, I studied Chinese and Spanish and then lived in China for 4 years.

Like many Australians, one of my parents was born in another country. My mother was from Liverpool and met my father in the UK. They fell in love and came to Australia on a tourist visa. Eventually, they were able to live together after being

What did you want to be as a child, your inspiration and motivation, hobbies, sports? I didn’t know what I wanted to be when I was younger but I was clear that I wanted to travel. I travelled after my first year of University and

prepared correctly and that relevant legislation are interpreted accurately. Where did you train to become migration agent? I did my postgraduate studies in Griffith before working under one of the most experienced immigration lawyers Queensland. The main part of your business is helping a couple that is in love to be together and often that the couple’s love lie heavily on differences of both sides, toppled with rules and regulations that can keep them together or apart, is this challenging? It is incredibly challenging for the couples, but professionally it is something we do every day. It becomes second nature for us to be

I developed an interest in the immigration field because of this and although I was not qualified to help them at the time, I saw that there was an opportunity here to help people. working the ins and outs of the visa process but we are really passionate about the outcome. It is something I enjoy doing and using the knowledge of cross- cultural interactions and law that I have learned; I want to give back to the community.

About Freedom Migration: Freedom Migration was established in 2009 and is set up to be a boutique migration firm that covers most areas of Australian immigration and visas. I wanted to create a platform to put our expertise of migration law to good use by working closely with clients to give them the best possible chance of success in their applications. After completing my studies and becoming a certified migration agent, I have had the privilege of working with different communities and indulging my passion for culture. I wanted Freedom Migration to be a firm that prioritises working in a way that best suit our

Please share a story (or two) of a couple you helped (or hear about) that stay with you? One of my favourite stories from my clients is a young couple we helped to get their partner visa. They met on the Internet through a religious dating site and fell in love. They had been flying back and forth to see each other because the girl was studying music in an exceptional music school and she had four more years before she graduated. Throughout those four years, they remained 100% committed to their relationship and when she graduated, they got married. I love stories like this when couples overcome all the obstacles and despite all the odds remain true to their love. Now, they have a happy family here.

‘do it yourself’ packages where couples can still get assistancefrom a migration agent

without the huge costs

Is there a competition in migration service business? What strategy you use in doing business with this nature so that people come to you for assistance/service. There are a few migration services around but there are not too many in Brisbane that specialise in partner visas. I think the most important thing when running a migration firm is being genuine and compassionate with clients. I have worked as a volunteer with the Refugee and Immigration Legal Service providing migration and visa advice to refugees and underprivileged people, so I understand that sometimes finances can be a big burden on families and couples when they apply for a partner visa. This is why we offer ‘do it yourself’ packages where couples can still get assistance from a migration agent without the huge costs. One thing that is very important and that makes us different from everyone else is that we are generous with our advice. A lot of other firms don’t give out too much information because they want you to sign with them or they’re afraid to lose business but we really don’t believe in that. We want to genuinely help them, educate them and if they do decide to become our clients we are more than happy to

As a boutique firm, I really do get to meet amazing people and I love being close to my clients. We go out into the community as much as we can so that we can meet new people and each time it reminds me of why I started working in this field in the first place. Your own and your business future: Our biggest goal is to be the leading partner visa specialist migration firm in Queensland and a firm where people from all different cultures can comfortably approach us for help and trust that we will do our best to get their visas granted. Our long-term goal is to have service providers and branches of Freedom Migration in various countries so that we can provide quality service on the other applicant’s side and to give them services in their own language too. We will continue to host ‘Do it yourself’ partner visa workshops and free information sessions and really focus on bringing good news to these couples and families. I believe that everyone deserves to be together with their loved ones and I want Freedom Migration to be one of the best firms at delivering a happily ever after to our clients. 7

riginally from Victoria, Gavin Guy is an honest and hard- working Brisbane businessman who met the love of his life, Janthip Aronran in 2010. Introduced by a mutual friend, the couple’s friendship blossomed as they chatted through Skype and on the phone. It wasn’t until 2010 that they met in person.

“Jan used to live in Thailand about five hours drive out of Bangkok,” Gavin said. “I remember when my friend and his wife and I, made the drive to see her, it felt like such a long trip. I was literally on my way to a blind date.” “When I met her, the four of us went out for dinner and I really enjoyed her company. It was everything I had hoped for,” he said. Gavin said that he had to return to Bangkok with his friends the next day but was excited when Jan said she would come along. “It didn’t take long for us to realise that we really liked each other and after a couple of years of courtship we got married,” he said. “We had to be separated for most of that time because we had to get our partner visa. Whilst, I was in Australia, Jan was running around in Bangkok making countless five hour trips back and forth to settle the applications.” “She would have to get the documents translated in to English on top of her work commitments. reating uniqueness is a gift that amplifies style. It should be in everyone’s consciousness. The need to define a space that is your own. In the search for quality, and pieces that is sure to impress visitors, when you walk into the room.

Max Sparrow comes to mind. Their business model is not only convenient for busy people who have no time to go out shopping and want to do it all online, but an added bonus is that Max Sparrow has a showroom that houses several pieces for you to confirm on your order, by seeing and touching the actual product there. Their Brisbane showroom has been exceptionally well presented, professionally administered, and punctually delivered. Hopefully their after sales service will be equally matched. In all successful stories of new businesses we all want to know the story behind it, so I was fortunate enough to ask Max Sparrow’s Executive Director Anthony Spon Smith to reveals a little to us about the Brand: Could you tell us how this fabulous world of Max Sparrow began and what direction it is heading to? Max Sparrow came to life after we an opportunity for an online furniture retail revolution. Launching in March 2013 on www.maxsparrow.com, Max Sparrow answered Australia’s need for affordable, accessible and extraordinary design, without compromise. 100% Australian owned, the Max Sparrow aesthetic is timeless, with a nod towards Hampton’s style and coastal chic, a perfect fit for the Australian home. Max Sparrow offers quality pieces sourced from around the globe; every detail is considered and every piece is special. Since launching, we’ve been growing rapidly and our focus continues to be on expansion. In 2013, we opened our first bricks and mortar showroom in Sydney and this year we opened our first Brisbane showroom. We’re currently looking at other cities around Australia. What makes Max Sparrow unique and stand out from competitors? Max Sparrow directly connects the manufacture with the Australian consumer. This unique model eliminates the middle-man and dramatically reduce costs, allowing Max Sparrow to offer enviable, quality interior products at less than half the price you’d expect to pay in store.

7

Where do you draw inspiration from? Design inspiration comes from a variety of places and as Max Sparrow’s buyer, international trips to the United States, Europe and Asia are always worthwhile. I make sure I stay across new designers, forecasts and industry news whether it’s from internationalpublications or simply from speaking with pioneers in the design industry on my travels. 9

8

10

With a fast pace market for seasonal design change, what is your ‘of the moment piece’? The benefit of Max Sparrow is that most of our collections are timeless; the styles transcend past seasonal trends. The Manhattan is my all time favourite collection but if I had to pick just one piece it would be the Kagney Leather Occasional Chair (7). The shape of the chair is retro and contemporary at the same time. Your favourite public place? I’m a Sydneysider so it’s hard to beat Bondi Beach in the summer. Who should we watch out for in terms of dynamic design? Timothy Oulton and Jonathan Adler, both exclusive international designers sold through Max Sparrow’s sister brand Coco Republic. Timothy Oulton is renowned for his signature craftsmanship and reinventing the old whilst Jonathan Adler adds instant personality to any interior with an appreciation of bold design. What colour inspires you and what is the result of that splash of paint? Rather than a specific colour, I always opt to enhance a space with a gold or brass accent. I tend to steer clear of cliché seasonal tones and focus instead of neutrals with a pop of metallic. The home is worth investing in. What is glamorous to you? I look to different design styles and periods to draw inspiration when it comes to creating a glamorous interior such as Hollywood regency and mid century. A focus on finishes is also a consideration – we’ve seen an influx of lucite or acrylic pieces coming through internationally. Traditionally, it is a very difficult material to build with and so the meticulous techniques to produce these pieces can be reflected in the price however it is definitely worth it in a luxury home. First used in the 1920’s in design, the beauty of this material is classic. The Camille Side Table(8) or Cheslea Round Acrylic Side Table(9) are great examples. (1) Chelsea Side Table #026hr, (2) Naples Bench Grey #t213002, (3) Jonathan Adler Menagerie Camel, (4) Jonathan Adler Muse - Dora Maar Bowl, (5) Jonathan Adler Zig Zag Baby Alpaca Throw – Camel, (6) Jonathan Adler Animalia Trinket Box – Giraffe, (7) Kagney Leather Occasional Chair (8) Camille Side Table (9) Chelsea Round Acrylic Side Table, (10) Michigan Side Table,

From imagination to reality e is a concept artist that brings digital drawing and painting of different character to real. He is behind many animated commercials for world-class clients such as Coca Cola, McDonalds, Turkish Airlines and many more. We caught up with Wanchana Intrasombat or Vic to talk about the journey that brings his imagination to reality.

4

The best part of it that makes me happy is seeing my works or the character I created come to life in the film. ©Ai Shah

Can you please tell us about yourself? I am currently working as a concept artist, character designer and illustrator. I did a degree in Fine Art and self-taught myself to develop skill in digital painting. Since graduated I have been working as a freelancer. Until last year, together with my partner, I started up a studio called “StudioKun”.

How did you get into a career in animation? I had a dream to work in animation industry. Since I was young, I love to watch animation films, cartoon or read any illustrated comic. I watched Toy Story, which was the first 3D animation feature released in 1995, it really touched my heart and really inspired me.

What is your favorite movie and what style do you like the most? Surely my all time favorite is Toy story. I also love drawing on computer, and I can do it quite comfortably. I love all Disney art style and Pixar style.

What was your first piece of work that you worked on? Iworked on many subjects that use digital art such as apps on mobile, illustration for book, print-ad, game, animation, commercial etc. The first project I have worked on was for Coca-cola animated commercial. It was

the first biggest project and it’s a lot of pressure but I did my best. It was an amazing experience to work alongside the team from America.

1. To the waterfall 2. Coca-Cola concept art 3. The migration begin 4. Molgera 5. I hate vegetable 6. 100 of the adventure (cover for 2DArtist magazine)

5

What is the most challenging part working in animation business? Because I’m in Thailand and most of the clients or my co-workers are abroad with different time zone so the communication is quite challenging. Sometimes it’s not easy to find a perfect time for everyone to have conference meetings to discuss and update on work progress.

What is the best story working in this industry? As I’m a concept artist, the best part of it that make me happy is seeing my works or the character I created come to life in the film. It’s very rewarding. I can wake up happily doing what I love everyday.

Any advice you can give to an aspiring animation student or artist trying to get into the animation or gaming business? My advice is, if you can tell yourself without any doubts or concerns that you love and want to get involve in animation industry, do it and do it with passion! Try to improve your skills everyday and focus on observation, keep Naked Raku practicing and to always up your skills, the hard work you do will pay you back!

She had in her hands a Nikon camera and was an official photographer on the night. When I got a chance to sit down and talk with her that I learnt not just her pretty smiley face and her gracious personality that is capturing, the story of her journey to Australia and the life she leads is also very inspiring. What is Reena Augustine in brief? Well, I was born and raised in a family of 7 brothers and sisters. I am the 6th. My father was an engineer and my mother’s a housewife. As I was born in the Southern part of India but growing up in the Western part, I was teased and bullied a lot, they called me “black devil” because my skin is so dark compare to other kids that born and raised in the Northern region. I was discriminated because my skin color was very different to them. That really marked me and made me think that I was not good enough. I didn’t want to do anything at school that made me stand out, I was not very confident at all. My father encouraged me to try to talk in front of the class whenever I got an opportunity so I slowly did and more and more. From a very shy girl, I went to represent my school and won the debate in our State competition. 6

What have you inherited from your father’s good qualities? I have in many ways. I am a qualified automobile mechanic, which I think is close enough to my father’s profession as an engineer. I was a qualified automobile mechanic; I used to work amongst team of blokes for 2 years. Yes, I used to have to tie my hair up short and wearing overalls work wear and worked with heavy tools, nuts and bolts.

I think I also got into camera and am very good at taking photos because of my father love and passion in photography. He had many cameras and he had his own studio in India. When did you come to Australia and what brought you here? I came to Australia in 2009 to pursue study in Automotive Mechanic. After graduated I practiced for 2 years. Then I went on to study

in Accountancy so that I can acquire permanent residency status and live in Australia longer.

While I was studying accountant I had a part time job with a company buying gold and we had a stall in shopping center. One day my supervisor said to me “ Reena, you need to wear color dresses more, stop wearing black and gray to work all the time.

Obviously in return for that is you gain a lot of contacts and connections?

I kept adding color in my work clothes ever since and people walk to me and said how much they liked how I dress and like my skin tone. Some people even ask if they can touch it. That really boost up my confidence. I realize that although it

is not my birth country, but Australia offers me choices for education, opportunity to flourish in my career and everyone has equal opportunity. People here accept me the way I am. They don’t think that my skin is too dark but they like it. That realization is like an eye opener that everyone is different in his or her own way and it is okay to be different. How did you get into community work? I say yes to any request for help in the community activities even when something I am not sure whether I can do it or not but I said yes first and learn later. Most of the time I volunteer as a photographer at different events, as it is something I can do best and they loved my work. I feel very good having

lot about many things from being with many people from different cultural background and it is so rewarding. Now when I want to do something, people come and offer to help and lend their hands,

sometimes without me asking them to. Tell us about the event that you are organizing? I am organizing a Red Carpet Fashion Show on Saturday 31 October 2015 at the Rocklea Showground. My idea is to build a platform for designers and models from different cultural background so they can come under one roof to showcase their talents. I think we are in multicultural society with a lot of talented people out there. I want them to take this opportunity to show their extraordinary skills. All are invited so we can support them. It was satisfying to have such great aroma and can drink it also! Phillip was excited to share about how D’ARK is doing after the official launch. “It is going really well. He will be opening two more Di Bella Coffee business ventures in Bangkok. The one opening in November is three blocks away from where D’ARK currently is. Another, one will be a big coffee superstore, is to open up some time next year. When asked if the new coffee superstore is as exciting as a Starbucks drive thru that had just opened up in Thailand. Phillip replied with confident that he is not Starbucks and he is not trying to be Starbuck. “Their model is different, they are
