To ensure enrollment, please register at least one week prior to the start date of the class. You will be notified if the class for which you are registering is full. Cancellation: Sawtooth reserves the right to cancel, combine, or reschedule classes to adjust for enrollment, and to change class instructors when necessary. Learn the process of preparing the armature, shaping the head, creating expressive facial features and adding drapery. Pieces will be fired in preparation for adding patinas. 2311. Festive Clay Birdhouse Create a festive habitat for your favorite feathered friends. 1091. Visual Storytelling: Basics of Video Production Discover the foundations of effective and creative storytelling through moving and/or sequenced images. Learn how to compose a shot, basic approaches to cinematography, story-boarding, and various approaches to video editing using iMovie. Leave the class with two to three short videos and resources to create a basic video for commercial, fiction, or non-fiction purposes. Students should be prepared to work in a shared lab setting and bring their own storage device (external hard drive, or thumb-drive) and camera (videos can be shot on any camera, including phone cameras or iPads). 1092. The Art of Cinemagraphs Cinemagraphs are a beautiful twist on animated GIFs, using high quality video and photography. Unlike GIFs, this new art form is more subtle, sophisticated and often mysterious. Through the use of minor and repeated movements, these still photographs give the viewer the illusion that they are watching a video. The effects

125. Open Digital Studio Intended for intermediate to advanced students looking for extended access to Sawtooth’s Digital Lab. Use software such as Photoshop, Illustrator, InDesign, Lightroom, iMovie, and Movie Maker to work on a specific project or continue honing skills. Access is supervised however you must provide your own projects for independent development as well as a USB drive for file storage. Once registered, you will have access to the Digital Open Studio calendar to sign up for your spots (no later than 24 hours in advance). 4332. Right Where You Are! Workshop Unleash your creativity and join writer, Jane Sobie, and mixed-media artist, Patty Pape, in this one-day workshop. We’ll intertwine these two creative arts in a booklet provided for you. Through music, photos, and prompts, Jane will get your creative juices flowing as you Write Where You Are. Patty will take you, Right Where You Are, to create one-of-a-kind pages with your writing and mixed-media techniques, using paint, stencils, spray inks, image transfers, and others. You’ll weave your words and art into a unique tapestry, reflecting on Right Where I Am. 4333. Landscape Made Simple Workshop In this hands-on workshop Viktoria will demonstrate ways of approaching painting in the studio from photos or studies. This will be a paint-along class with individual attention to each student. Viktoria will bring in a plein air landscape study and demonstrate the effective methods she employs to transform it into a larger scale studio painting. The students will be able to bring in reference material (a landscape study or a high quality 8x10 inch landscape photo) and turn it into a beautiful landscape painting or use the study material provided by Viktoria. It will be re-composed for maximum impact and transformed into a complete landscape painting. The focus of this class will be on composition, drawing, value and color. This is an all-levels workshop demonstrated in oil, but you have the option to bring and use your own acrylic paints if you wish. 400. Introduction to Figure Drawing from Life Using a variety of mediums and approaches, the class will draw from the nude figure. The class is taught for all levels, though some general drawing experience will be helpful. The poses will consist of very short “gesture” positions as well as longer still ones, with the teacher demonstrating the approach and medium first, then helping individuals, one on one throughout the class. Painting the Figure in Oils – A Classical Approach For artists who have some experience drawing the figure from life, but who want to learn a step-by-step approach to painting a figure in a traditional way. Miriam will lead you through the process, including how to block-in shapes, create volume with shadows, mix skin tones and apply the paints with proper brushstrokes. Discuss how to handle edges of the form and how to use temperature to create a painting that glows. These fundamentals can be used to enhance everything you paint. Abstract Painting Workshop with David Kessler Learn how to loosen-up, let-go, and utilize line, shape, value, color, texture, and spontaneity to move beyond the realm of representational painting to produce work that is bold, colorful, and personally expressive. This is an intermediate level workshop for painters who already possess the knowledge and basics of traditional painting, but wish to learn how to begin painting abstracts. 4116. Screen Printing Workshop Create your own limited-edition artwork on fabric or paper while learning about screen printing. Artist Woodie Anderson walks you through the design and printing process and shows how some of the tools and techniques work. Students will create a nonphotographic stencil and print from a screen using the screen filler negative method–a method you can easily use in your own home using safe, non-toxic materials. Bring a t-shirt or pillowcase to print on, if you’d like. Printmaking is a wonderful art form that is accessible to all levels. 4330. Collagraph Workshop In this one day workshop, students will create relief prints using a collagraph plate. An image will be created on the plate by gluing found materials including fabric, string, leaves, and other materials, creating the relief surface. The plate is then inked and run through the press to create very unique textures. 389. Rag Weaving Technique Remix Beginning and intermediate students will learn classic and new weaving methods of “rag rug” style. All students will learn/review loom preparation and weaving practice while experimenting with materials, both traditional (woven fabric strips) and unconventional (potholder loopers, strips of recycled t-shirts or plastic bags). Upon exploring, weavers will plan and produce their own unique table runner. 399. Painted Warp or “Kasuri” Weaving Learn how to use a form of Ikat weaving that the Japanese call “kasuri”. It is fun because the results can often be a surprise as it is with any method of dyeing yarns. Students will wind a white warp, tie it at intervals with tape or rattan and dye it. After processing, the ties are removed and the warp is put on a loom and woven. For the more adventuresome, the weft can also be dyed at intervals and then watch what happens as it works its magic with the warp. Students must be able to work independently at the loom. Studio Series 609. The Use of Negative Space in Portraiture In this studio class, we will focus on creating portraits with strong negative space—the space around your subject. The use of negative space in portraiture can bring greater emphasis to your subject, create interest and mystery in your photograph, and enhance the mood of your photo. Using models, we will create both indoor and outdoor portraits with an emphasis on the space around your subject. 6122. Photography Expedition to Stone Mountain with Julian Charles Inside every photographer is the desire to make extraordinary photographs. These kinds of images come from a photographer who is prepared to live an extraordinary life. Join Julian Charles on a guided day-trip to the little-known and unused trails of Stone Mountain. This program is a combination of skills, tips, and tricks of the backcountry photographer, with the mindfulness that a photographic artist needs to make a connection with their surroundings. Recently relocated from New Zealand, Julian brings with him a unique set of skills carved from years behind the camera among some of the wildest scenery in the world. Healing and Horses Workshop for Teens Students ages 13-19 will have the unique opportunity to work with horses at Riverwood Therapeutic Riding Center, combining hands-on time with the horses followed by a personal art experience on the farm. Unique in their therapeutic nature, horses seek relationship, leadership, trust and respect in equal doses, often transferring those qualities to humans during interactions. Just being around horses can change human brainwave patterns and create calm and focus. After guided time with the horses, students will be allowed to process their feelings and experiences through photography and journaling. 2016 Summer Arts Immersion (SAI) for Rising 9th-12th Grade Students
Our Summer Arts Immersion program is the finest visual art experiences in North Carolina. Bringing talented rising 9th -12th grade art students together with professional artists and art educators, we offer exceptionally creative and high quality art studio classes tailored for students with a passion for visual arts. The program runs June 20th –July 22nd (no classes the week of July 4th) during the day from 9am - noon and 1pm - 4pm as 1 week studios. Students may sign up for multiple classes to receive a multiple class discount.
2016 ARTeen Camps - for Rising 6th-9th Grade Students Sawtooth is proud to offer specialty art camps for our middle school students. Photographs Sawtooth School for Visual Art will occasionally document classes and student work using photography and video for promotional purposes only. If you do not wish you or your child photographed, please notify the school in writing. Adult Scholarships The Sawtooth School for Visual Art offers a limited number of scholarships for adult programs awarded on the basis of need. Scholarships are considered on a first-come, firstserved basis, and are dependent upon availability of funds. See sawtooth.org for application form.
Youth Scholarships Youth scholarships are available based on need. A written recommendation for the scholarship must come from a classroom teacher or qualified professional, and a parent or guardian. Please direct the scholarship application with recommendations to the youth program coordinator. Parking The parking lot across Spruce Street for the Milton Rhodes Center is a self-pay system that takes credit/debit cards and cash but does not give change. The lot is owned and operated by The Arts Council of WSFC. Please be aware that you have other parking options such as at a meter on the street (25 cents per hour) and on numerous other pay surface lots and parking garages within one to two blocks of the school.
