News from the Saxonwell Vicarage Dear All, A few years ago a vicar friend of mine turned 40 on Easter Sunday. I so wanted to find a badge saying “Life begins today!” Paying homage to the expression “Life begins today” but also to the bigger fact that it is through Easter that we receive the gift of New Life. Hence the idea of giving eggs, out of something which doesn’t appear to be alive comes new life (a chick). The shell once cracked open reminds us of the empty tomb. On Palm Sunday Jesus arrived in Jerusalem to celebrate the Passover. The great Jewish festival, celebrating their deliverance, by God, hundreds of years earlier from Egypt. On the Thursday night Jesus sat down with his friends to eat the special passover meal, remembering how because of the blood of the Lamb, which they had sacrificed and painted on their door posts, the Angel of death had passed over their houses. Later that night Jesus was arrested and the following day was crucified. Jesus who had done nothing
wrong, died a criminal’s death. Jesus took our place, taking the judgment on himself for the things we have done wrong. We have all at some time experienced the weight of guilt, over something we either should or should not have done.’ We also know the relieve and joy when we are forgiven. It is this feeling a million times bigger which Christians feel at Easter. We believe that because of the blood of Jesus (his death) the judgement, has passed over us, and we have been given new life. Life begins today! Hence the changing of symbols of death into symbols of life and hope, like decorating a cross with flowers. Alternatively the giving and receiving of gifts which remind us of new life, Easter eggs or chicks and bunnies. We hope you will join us as we remember Christ’s Passion and celebrate his resurrection at one of the many events throughout Holy Week. Regardless of how you celebrate Easter, I pray you will know the joy of the Risen Christ and the freedom he gives, this Easter and always. God bless Harriet Saxonwell Group Parish News I 3

We have started our Pew Cushion Sponsor collection and interest is increasing. Do you want to contribute to more comfortable pews? Pew cushions have been purchased for some of the pews – they will help not only with comfort but will also add some warmth. To support the cost of this, you can ‘sponsor’ a cushion. Long Bennington Parish Council The meeting on 2nd March was attended by six members of the public.
Two of the residents present referred to a planning application (ref S14/3553) for 8 houses at the rear of The Royal Oak and requested that the Parish Council objects to the application. Discussion later by Councillors, during the Parish Council meeting, resolved to object to the application for various reasons summarised in the minutes of the meeting. These will be posted on the Parish Council Noticeboard following approval at the April meeting. A resident expressed concerns over the increasing number of vehicles parking on the grass verges in the village, presenting safety issues for pedestrians having to avoid the vehicles and also causing damage to the verges. This matter was discussed by Councillors later in the meeting. Further to this discussion, the Parish Council would like to kindly ask all residents to refrain from parking on the verges as significant damage is beginning to be made. Also, this is presenting safety issues for children in some cases and causing obstructions for grass maintenance contractors. Following referral to the local Police Office, the Parish Council has been advised that monitoring of the situation will take place and where necessary, enforcement notices issued. Councillors would like to remind residents that during the last financial year, four Automated External Defibrillators have been installed in the village in the following locations on outside walls: Sports Pavilion Police Office St James’s Hall Woods Close (Main Residential Building) AEDs are devices that give the heart an electric shock when someone’s heart has stopped (cardiac arrest).You can use an AED 8 I Saxonwell Group Parish News
with no training. First, make sure someone has called for an ambulance, and, if an AED isn’t immediately available, give CPR (cardiopulmonary resuscitation) until someone can bring you an AED. The AED is in a locked box and the entry code will be provided by the emergency services. Then, as soon as you’ve got an AED, switch it on. It will immediately start to give you a series of visual and verbal prompts informing you of what you need to do. Follow these prompts until the ambulance arrives or someone with more experience than you takes over. As mentioned in the last report, significant progress has now been made with the Neighbourhood Plan for Long Bennington and a draft plan has been produced. Councillors would now like to consult with residents and invite you to view the plan and provide comment/feedback. Details of the plan will be provided at the Annual Parish Meeting on Tuesday 14th April 2015 at St James’s Hall (see opposite for further details). The draft plan will be available to view on the Parish Council website http://parishes.lincolnshire. gov.uk/LongBennington/ Finally, I would like to advise that another small project this last year (an ongoing) has been the planting of spring bulbs. A number of daffodils have been planted in the verge at the south end of the village. Also, a number of bulbs have been planted in the grass in the memorial gardens. It is hoped this will be an ongoing project and if anyone has any suggestions of further locations for future planting, please let me know. LONG BENNINGTON PLAYING FIELD MANAGEMENT COMMITTEE AGM Thursday 14th May 2015 at the Main Road Playing Field Pavilion at 8pm. This is a public meeting to which all Long Bennington residents are invited. Village sports and leisure clubs, and other interested organisations that wish to be represented on the Playing Field Committee during the coming year, are invited to nominate up to two representatives who, if possible, should attend this AGM. Most of the volunteers on the committee are now in their 50s, 60s, or 70s and have been giving up their free time for well over 10 years. It is now time for the next generation to step up and do their bit. So, if you use the facilities, and want to help ensure their continued survival, please attend our AGM. For further information please telephone 01400 281763. For those who are not aware of us, the Playing Field Management Committee is a Registered Charity that was originally set up in the early 1970s to manage the fields which the Parish Council had just acquired. The committee is currently made up of twelve members of the public, and two members each from the Tennis Club, the Football Clubs, and the Parish Council. The committee and its associated groups have themselves raised over 90% of the £450,000 that have been spent on the facilities to date, and the last major project, a program to reorientate and drain all the playing surfaces of the field, has just been completed at a cost of £70,000.

Long Bennington Local History Society Pearl Wheatley MBE gave an account of the life and achievements of Sir Joseph Banks (1743 – 1820), botanist. He was an extremely wealthy baronet who spent his summers away from London overseeing his extensive estates in Lincolnshire. In his later 20’s his interest in natural history led to his joining James Cook in the circumnavigation of the globe on board Endeavour. Surviving the 18th century voyagers’ dangers, of shipwreck, drowning, and disease, he collected, classified, and named a multiplicity of flora and fauna from the effectively unknown lands Endeavour visited. On his return to England he became close to King George III (aka Farmer George) because of their common interest in agricultural matters. Banks soon became President of the Royal Society the metropolitan and premier scientific society in England. He held grimly on to this eminent position until he died at an advanced age. After the Endeavour expedition he made little direct contribution to science but was influential in the national interest by organising, for example, smuggling Merino sheep from Spain to England and Australia, shipping tea plants from China to India/Sri Lanka against the wishes of the Chinese government, and initiating the transportation of convicts to Botany Bay. Whether he proposed these and other measures or acted as a mouthpiece for the many “Empire Building” committees of which he was a member was not specified. Ms Wheatley’s brief account of a long and influential life was well received by the Society’s members. The A.G.M. of the Society was held following the talk.

“He is not here, He has risen, just as He said. Come and see the place where He lay.” Matthew Chapter 28 verse 6
Inmortal Father we come into your holy presence with thankful and joyful hearts for you have raised your son Jesus Christ from death to eternal life. He has risen! Hallelujah! Father throughout Holy Week we have walked with Jesus, witnessing His triumphant entry into Jerusalem, then seeing how quickly the crowds adoration turned to mockery and hatred. We’ve partaken in His Last Supper, agonised with Him in Gethsemane and seen how He was betrayed, denied and forsaken by his friends and finally, watched him die on a cross - all for our sakes. O, dearest Father, such love such amazing love! But today is Easter Day and we rejoice in Him for He is risen, conquering sin and death forever and winning the final victory for us. Gracious God we accept life isn’t easy, it wasn’t for Jesus and it isn’t for us. We still face pain, grief, isolation and opposition in our lives yet we can continue to praise you - for in Jesus Christ our Redeemer, who has experienced all we ever shall and more, you have provided for us the way, the truth and the resurrection life - life to be lived fully with Him and in Him, our risen Lord. Alleluia!

Black bin collections will take place a day later than normal across South Kesteven between Monday April 6 and Friday April 10. Black bins and pink bags will be collected 24 hours later on each day from April 7 to 11. Good Friday collections on April 3 will take place as normal.

Women’s World Day of Prayer “Do you know what I have done for you?”
This was the theme of the recent Women’s World Day of Prayer Service held on Friday 6th May, at Long Bennington Methodist Chapel. This year the Christian Women of the Bahamas chose the text, prayers and hymns based on the lesson learned from Jesus washing his disciples feet during the Last Supper. Each year the service is chosen by a different country and is happening somewhere around the world throughout the 24hours of the first Friday in March which is quite a thought. Ours was a lively service with the chapel appropriately decorated and enjoyed by the appreciative congregation. Thank you to all the ladies of the Chapel who hosted the service, and to Ted who played for us, and the local WI choir who led the singing. Next year the service will designed by the Women of Cuba. The service raised £137.16.
Foston Book Club
Safe to say, March was not a good month for us to get through books. We will need to review ‘The Good Father’ by Noah Hawley, and possibly ‘Wolf Hall’ by Hilary Mantel, next month, as very few of us had finished these (or even started them in some cases). Let’s hope the Easter holidays gives us more time for reading. For our next meeting we are reading Gone Girl by Gillian Flynn. It has received very varied reviews, but our curiosity has got the better of us, and we are going to give this psychological thriller a go. We meet on the third Tuesday of the month from 8pm and our next meet is 21st April. Long Bennington VPA AGM
On 24 February we held our AGM and got through the business, including the reports from the officers, the election of this year’s officers and Committee members (same as last year) and the forthcoming programme, swiftly. After refreshments we then had a talk from Gerry Elms our President on daffodils, tulips and how to prepare entries for showing - very timely with the Spring Show coming up. This was followed by Fiona Shilling, our Chairman, showing some lovely photographs taken by members of the Club’s events over the year.

On Tuesday 28th April as usual at 7.30pm in St James’s Hall we will be hosting Simon from the Artisan Honey Company. They are an award winning Lincolnshire Beekeeping firm, and Simon will be talking to us about bees, beekeeping, plants which are helpful to bees and he will be bringing some honey and other bee related products with him for us to buy if we wish. Women’s Institute Long Bennington
On March 3rd LBWI held its Annual Meeting when a new committee was elected. They are President Jeanne Day; Secretary Beryl Holmes; Treasurer Mary Dring. Other members of the committee will be Chris Jordan, Joy Jordan, Jean Higgs, Jeanne Lambert and Janet Marshall. The Annual General Meeting of Foston WI was held on Tuesday, 10 March 2015 in Foston Village Hall. The business of the evening included the appointment of a new President, Mrs Monica Winters, and a new Committee. The outgoing President gave an address and Annual Reports were given by the Secretary and Treasurer. A ballot was held for two lucky members to attend the Royal Garden Party on 2 June 2015. Foston Conservation Group
Spring Village Walk A group of 50 or so intrepid walkers assembled on the afternoon of March 22nd to tackle two of the walks around Foston in glorious sunshine. We had couldn’t have wished for better weather and everyone enjoyed a pleasant stroll and were rewarded with barbecued hotdogs at the end. Maybe we can repeat the event in the Autumn. Don’t forget the Spring Plant Swop which is coming up on Saturday May 9th in the Village Hall from 10–12noon. The aim is to exchange seedlings and plants and to meet fellow gardeners with hints and tips to pass on. So come along and have a cuppa and a chat.
