Hello SBLBSHP members,
I hope everyone is doing well and staying safe and warm! I can’t believe this is my last President’s Update. This year has truly flown by and thank you all so much for allowing me the opportunity to serve as your President for our amazing chapter! As I reflect on this past year, our chapter was able to return to hosting many successful in-person events and we couldn’t have done it without the active participation of our wonderful members!
For the Fall quarter, we continued to provide monthly industry educational dinners including the promotion of various dinner events during the CSHP Seminar in Anaheim. (continued on next page)
In October, we hosted a successful and well attended industry dinner and residency panel in partnership with Genentech, various pharmacy residency programs in the South Bay/Long Beach area, and University of California, Irvine School of Pharmacy. This event provided an educational talk for our pharmacist members as well as an opportunity to support the growth of pharmacy students, especially introducing them to the benefits of involvements with local pharmacy organizations. Our chapter was also well represented at the CSHP Seminar in November with multiple awardees from our local pharmacy leadership.
As we look forward to the new year, our chapter will continue to work hard to provide our members with many exciting opportunities for learning, advocacy, and networking under the leadership and guidance of our incoming president, Grant Lackey. I am very excited to see what is to come for next year! Last but not least, we will be hosting our 2023 Board Installation and Night with Industry on Friday, January 20th, 2023 at the Los Verdes Golf Course in Rancho Palos Verdes. Please be on the lookout for more detailed information to come! We hope to see everyone there!
Hope everyone has a wonderful holiday season!
Warm regards, Michelle Ding, PharmD, BCPP, APh

Recap: Industry-sponsored Educational Dinners
By Matt Kamada, PharmD, BCPS, Industrial Relations Co-ChairThank you for attending our Industry Educational dinners! We took a short break through the holidays, but this article will recap the dinners we had in the last quarter.
In October, our chapter learned about Multiple Sclerosis as Dr. Dolly Roy came to give us a great overview of the disease state. The dinner was hosted by Biogen and was held at the new Ruth’s Chris Steakhouse in downtown Long Beach.
The month of November we did not hold any official educational dinners as a chapter because of Seminar held in Anaheim. An email was sent out with several different educational talks in and around Seminar so I hope you were able to attend at least one.
In December we had a joint educational dinner with the Southern California CSHP Chapter at Crustaceans in Beverly Hills. It was hosted by Genentech on the topic of Evrysdi (risdiplam).
A special thank you to all our industry partners! We are looking to continue strong in 2023 with new restaurants and topics so please be on the lookout for emails/Evites from our chapter for these dinners!

Recap: SBLBSHP & UCI SSHP Educational Dinner and Residency Panel
By Marian Tan, PharmD Candidate, UC Irvine School of Pharmacy Student LiaisonOn the 21st of October 2022, a joint event was held by SBLBSHP and SSHP at UCI student chapter. at the Acapulco Restaurant in Long Beach. The event comprised of an educational talk presented by the industry sponsor Genentech on the topic of exploring treatment options in Her2+ early breast cancer. Multiple pharmacists from SBLB came to participate and listen in on the informative talk.
After the talk, the UCI students stayed to partake in a residency panel. There were 9 residents in attendance from various residency programs in South Bay, Long Beach, and Irvine. The pharmacy residents came from Kaiser Permanente Downey, Long Beach MemorialCare, and UC Irvine Medical Center. SSHP at UCI is grateful for all the residents who participated: Dr. Stephanie Bandera, Dr. Tracy Ly, Dr. Kristin Keeno, Dr. Tammy Nguyen, Dr. Angela Chaili, Dr. Jasmine Ventenilla, Dr. Joanne Wong, Dr. Sandy Wong, and Dr. Catherine Tran for providing the students with insights and wisdom regarding their residency experiences. We also want to extend our gratitude to the residency program directors who were instrumental in letting the residents know about the event.
There were about 24 students from UC Irvine in attendance to the event. The event was a success, and it was deemed very informative and insightful by the students. Timothy Nguyen, a first year PharmD student from UCI School of Pharmacy and Pharmaceutical Sciences said: “This experience was invaluable because we were able to listen to and interact with recent graduates that are currently attending various residency programs.” It was truly wonderful for the students to experience this event with the help of South Bay Long Beach chapter.
I want to especially thank Dr. Michelle Ding in helping me organize this event. I am eternally thankful for her guidance in making this event a success!
On November 7th, the USC student chapter hosted the annual Meet the Directors event. This event serves as one of the largest networking events of the academic year for our chapter. It aims to provide an opportunity for student pharmacists to learn from and network with directors from various areas of pharmacy. This event also aims to provide students with insight about the numerous career paths that they can explore within the profession of pharmacy, as well as foster a leadership mindset and professionalism. Our esteemed guests who attended this event represented the areas of academia, ambulatory care, independent, inpatient, outpatient, managed care, and pharmaceutical industry. Our very own Dr. Angela Jeong and Dr. Erwin Jeong represented the SBLBSHP chapter at this event!
