he International Herald Tribune’s legendary fashion critic Suzy Menkes ruffled feathers when she published a piece that quickly went viral about how Fashion Week in New York has become a circus, where peacocks prance outside Lincoln Center like bird feed for the camera-toting bloggers who snap them up as if they were the second coming of Madonna, or rather Lady Gaga. Fashion is in itself a carnival of chic and the sometimes curiously cuckoo, and Menkes also made some valid points on just who deserves to sit in the front row. Is it the astute British blogger Susie Bubble (née Susanna Lau) or a veteran editor like my good pal Nina Garcia? In my book, there is room for both Susie—who taught me how to take better runway shots with my iPhone—and Nina, who is now an international name as a judge on Project Runway. In an age when images and opinions of a dress are just a tweet away, there is no avoiding the BryanBoys of the blogosphere, as well as the commanding presence of Anna Wintour, front and center at Carolina Herrera.

Welcome to the future of the fashion world.

Speaking of fashion’s future, designers have become major multi-taskers. I am mad for the work of London’s Duro Olowu, so I naturally snapped up as much as I could in Olowu’s collection for JC Penney, which with menswear master-minder Nick Wooster on board, is giving Target a run for their style street cred.

Another multi-tasker is Minnie Mortimer (full disclosure: Minnie is my sister and BFF) who designs an eponymous label in Los Angeles and also creates capsule collections for über preppy Boast, which is hav-

ing a major re-launch, and the casual cool Three Dots brand. “I just love to design everything and anything,” Minnie told me as she created yet another inspiration board on Pinterest (hence my nickname for my little sister: Minner the Pinner).

SCENE also predicts a Spanish invasion on Seventh Avenue, after being blown away by the candy colored yumminess of Delpozo’s collection. Under the helm of Josep Font, the Madrid-based label wow-ed a normally fatigued and jaded mid-Fashion Week crowd.

Expect to see lots of Delpozo on red carpets this year.

As we put together our style issue, which is also our one-year anniversary, we decided to go with a larger format—so the beauty of fashion could be bigger and bolder than ever. As Menkes would surely attest to— the dolled-up peacocks need lots of space to show off their feathers and finery and our new size provides the ultimate playground for the most stylish eyes.

he March issue marks the first anniversary of SCENE, and it has been quite a year. We have a lot to be grateful for; the community has really embraced us.

We thank our readers for being so devoted and we thank our advertisers for being so generous.

You may notice that we look as if we have grown a bit and that is true. As of this issue we have gone to a larger format, one that we feel will give our editorial a better platform.

Not only are we bigger, but with this issue we are also broader. Until now we have been almost exclusively an Upper East Side publication. With the March issue we welcome our downtown neighbors. There was a time when there was a line of demarcation at 57th street. Today, uptown New Yorkers are moving downtown and downtown New Yorkers are moving uptown.

The one thing that will not change is our commitment to our editorial mission.

We will continue to take you behind the scenes of the most luxurious parties, introduce you to the most exciting people and keep you on top of the worlds of fashion, art, travel, entertaining, real estate and interior design. We cannot all be everywhere but SCENE will continue to make you feel like you are.

To Dye For

I

t all started with a Brooks Brothers jacket and a plastic tub of gesso swiped from the art room at Barclay School. At age 13, Sid Vicious and Patti Smith were my idols. I listened to the Sex Pistols’ album “Never Mind the Bollocks…,” (which my stepfather wrongly called “Acid Rock” no matter how many times I corrected him and told him it was Punk) on massive repeat. To show my devotion to dearly departed Sid, I painted a white anarchy symbol on the back of my tweed overcoat in gesso. The next day, I not only turned heads stomping (which I preferred to walking) down Park Avenue, but also became the buzz of Barclay. Many of my ignorant classmates didn’t know what the big A in a circle even meant and had never heard of bands whose lyrics spoke to me as if written about my dull life on the Upper East Side. So at recess, I schooled students in Punk 101: The Clash, the Pistols, Black Flag— the list went on and on.

Of course, by French class, my gesso-ed anarchy sign had tied a few teacher’s blue Barclay logo ties in an uptight knot. “Mon Dieu,” my pointy-nosed French professor spat out in disgust when he eyed my coat, which I didn’t take off all day. Soon, I was meeting with my homeroom teacher, Mr. Sanders, after class. It was hard not to stare at Mr. Sanders, who unfortunately wore dark blazers that highlighted the snowstorm of dandruff blanketing his shoulders like a Cortina ski slope.

“Mr. Campbell,” he proceeded, his thin lips pursed. “Please re-

move that coat.” I slowly and with numerous eye rolls took off my anarchy outerwear. “You have permanently ruined a perfectly good coat and you will not wear that garment ever again, understood? You are dismissed.”

Back at home, my mother rushed by me in the front hall. “Charlie, that coat you destroyed… I don’t have time to discuss it now. I have Mica’s benefit tonight, but you are not to watch TV—or eat candy.”

Once my parents had left, my mother trailing her scent of Fracas perfume by the elevator, I took the ten bucks in my pocket and ran to the Duane Reade on the corner to score a box of blue-black hair dye.

Sid and Patti both had jet black hair—why shouldn’t I? Back at home, I went to my mother’s bathroom and put on her bathrobe, which was covered in pink hearts (as were all her towels and makeup bags). I followed the instructions and dumped the inky goop all over my sandy brown hair. Tadah! I looked in the mirror and I was a new person: my locks pitch black.

As I admired my new self, I heard a gasp at the door. Our cook, Maya, stood motionless, her mouth agape. She slowly pointed to the floor. Below me and all over my mother’s precious pink heart bath mat and robe were big black stains.

Maya ran from the scene as if the room was on fire. “I tell Mrs. Campbell,” she yelled. “This is not good.”

I took a breath, knowing it could be my last.

LUCKY CLUTCH Khirma Eliazov brings good

fortune from across the globe A woman who knows fashion—Khirma Eliazov, a former freelance accessories editor and stylist for magazines including Vogue, Harper’s Bazaar and Elle—adds a new collection of clutches to her eponymous West Village boutique. Inspired by her travels to Bhutan—a state in the Eastern region of the Himalayas where prosperity is measured by happiness, literally—Eliazov was gifted a Dorje, a thunderbolt charm on a necklace symbolic of enlightenment in Buddhism; a necklace she has since not left the house without. Upon her return home to New York, Eliazov fashioned box shaped handbags made of python and stingray and adorned them with a thunderbolt clasp to offer the same good fortune to her clients. Eliazov, who names her handbags after significant women in her life, named this exclusive line—she’s only crafted 100—after her friend Batasha who traveled with her to Bhutan.

Eliazov’s recently opened shop also includes brands to the colorful likes of Kelsey Quan, Sachin and Babi, Theodora & Callum and Cut25.

Her own designs are sold at stores including Bergdorf Goodman, Henri Bendel and Intermix, just to name a few. So, what’s next for this editor-turned-designer? As far as travels, she’s already scheduled to jet set to Moscow next month where we anticipate her next inspiration will come from— nesting doll motifs, maybe?

FEYT’s core customers are in-season shoppers who are fashion savvy and looking for true expert style advice. They are interested in streamlining the luxury shopping experience, by being presented with personalized recommendations that fit their individual lifestyles. WHAT INSPIRED YOU TO LAUNCH FEYT? We were looking at what was missing in the fashion realm online, and felt that there was no real personal styling advice and customization for users. We think women should be able to experience great style without having to go through all of the work of discovery. WHAT IS YOUR BACKGROUND IN FASHION? eleanor: I started my career in the fashion departments of Harper’s Bazaar and Lucky Magazine, and did styling work for major advertising campaigns.

In 2004, I co-founded Earnest Sewn, building a successful wholesale, retail and e-commerce business, and quickly establishing the company as one of the leading luxury denim brands. Since 2010, I have been working with Ferebee on FEYT to personalize search and discovery within luxury e-commerce. ferebee: After beginning my career at Ralph Lauren, I worked in the press office at Calvin Klein handling celebrity services, styling, PR, and serving as the brand’s social liaison. Bush as friends—are helpful but Rabin’s experience is non-expendable. It was Rabin who was approached with the availability of the space as well as used his contacts to secure the restaurant’s chef, Daniel Eardley, who was a reference from a friend.

But more partners can equal more problems—at least when it comes to a reservation policy. “There are four partners and there’s only 70 seats, so we kind of fight this battle daily,” Rabin sighs. “We try to keep a number of tables open daily for friends and for neighborhood walkins. Word got out almost over night that we were open.”

That’s the problem with being popular. Rabin also explains that while he is seeing a lot of the “Lamb’s Club lunch customer crossover” in the Cole’s dinner crowd, he hopes that won’t be the only clientele joining them. “Our mission is to really make sure the person who lives and has lived for 15 years three doors away feels every bit as welcome as someone in my personal phone book, or Kyle’s personal phone book,” Rabin asserts.

Also making themselves feel welcome in Cole’s since its opening has been a long list of high-profile names, including designer Jason Wu and stylist Rachel Zoe who both held private dinners in the restaurant, as well as Oscar winner Viola Davis and Emmy Rossum, who huddled together in a booth in the back of the restaurant after the Cinema Society screening of their latest film, Beautiful Creatures.

It’s no accident that the walls of Cole’s are adorned with a litany of interesting and original art. With the help of Hotchkiss Carone’s relationship with ACRIA, a charity focusing on AIDS research, the restaurant hosted an exclusive dinner for the Young Friends of ACRIA. s bridging the generation gap between the accomplished and the contemporary the new formula for a successful and lasting New York hot spot? According to the co-owners of Cole’s, the new West Village restaurant situated opposite of Jackson Square Park, that may be exactly what it takes these days.

David Rabin, the well-known restaurateur and club-owner of Jimmy at The James hotel, Double Seven and The Lamb’s Club, partnered with Larry Poston, Johnny Swet and a newcomer to the restaurant scene: ‘09 Princeton grad, Kyle Hotchiss Carone.

“About two years ago, I started asking friends in the fashion business [about] who was sort of a really good, nice, well-known and a fun person coming up through the ranks. A younger person sort of in the middle of the social scene,” Rabin, a down-to-earth, gray-haired nightlife impresario, who is an avid poker player in his free time, explains of his initial partnering with Hotchkiss Carone. “Kyle’s name kept coming to the fore, and we had lunch together at the Lamb’s Club and hit it off.

He did some consulting for us and alerted some people on his radar [of what we were doing] who weren’t necessarily on our radar.” Eventually, the consulting position became more than a part-time gig.

“When the (restaurant) space came up, I reached out to Johnny and Larry and I said I didn’t want Kyle to just be a consultant. It was time for him to be part of the team,” Rabin explained. Hotchkiss Carone, a tall, almost worryingly charming 20-something who appears older than he is, jumped at the opportunity. “At that time, I was doing consulting work for hotels, like Andaz and The Setai, and the consulting thing was great, but I was really looking to do my own thing at some point, so I was looking for a restaurant space originally in Soho,” adds Hotchkiss Carone.

The perfect space never came, but the partnership with Rabin did. And Hotchkiss Carone couldn’t be happier. “I always say we kind of have the same world, just one generation apart.”

estaurateur Victor Bergeron opened his first eatery in California, under the name Hinky Dink’s. When World War II came and went, and when US soldiers and nurses came home recounting their Polynesian travels, the whole country embraced the tiki culture in all its kitschy glory. Though Bergeron’s main competitor, Don the Beachcomber, beat him to the punch and opened the first Polynesian-themed restaurant, it wasn’t long before Bergeron caught on to the trend. Changing the name of his restaurant to Trader Vic’s, he went tiki, all the way— from the décor and music to the cocktails and the food.

New York City’s first Trader Vic’s was located in the Savoy Hilton, and was later moved to its more famous spot in the Plaza Hotel after the Savoy was torn down in 1965 to make room for what would become the General Motors building.

The Plaza Hotel is undeniably one of New York’s most iconic establishments, and in the 60s, was known as the meeting place for the uptown residents wanting to see and be seen. Ladies had tea the Palm Court after a day of shopping at Bergdorf ’s, executives ate lunch at the Oak Room, while prepsters young and old gathered at Trader Vic’s.

President Nixon claimed it was his favorite restaurant, Salvador Dali insisted on having lunch there whenever he was in town, and Truman Capote and his swans were frequent guests. The restaurant also gained a reputation as a safe-haven for underage drinkers, being one of the few places in the city that didn’t card its younger clients.

Patrons feasted on Polynesian-inspired fare, like the famous pu pu platter and scorpion bowl. Trader Vic’s also popularized the mai-tai; in fact, Bergeron himself claimed to have invented it, though his rival Don challenged him on this statement every chance he got. Fighting over maitai patents wasn’t Trader Vic’s only bump in the road; in the 1970s, Yul Brynner sued the restaurant for $3 million after he got sick from a meal of spare ribs. Though they settled out of court, the restaurant prepared all its meat well-done from then on.

Trader Vic’s closed in 1988, when Donald Trump bought the Plaza and deemed the restaurant too tacky, telling the New York Times in 1989 that it “did not fit in with the image of the hotel [he] wanted to achieve.” America’s penchant for all things tiki may have faded, but the Trader Vic’s chain is alive and well; fans can find Trader Vic’s outposts in Los Angeles, Atlanta and Portland.

T

he Mark hotel has long been a haven for Hollywood celebrities and New York notables alike. While Vogue editor Hamish Bowles explained its appeal saying “It’s just so glamorous,” some credit the hotel’s avant-garde design as the main attraction, while others recognize the unparalleled service, privacy and ideal location.

Occupying a landmarked building built in 1927, The Mark is steps away from Central Park, blocks from the Metropolitan Museum and seconds from the high-end shops that line Madison Avenue.

Since its renovation in 2009, The Mark’s popularity has only grown, thanks in part to the addition of modern amenities, and preservation of the hotel’s old-world charm. “We took a great brand— The Mark—and redesigned it to meet 21st century standards, bringing back the excitement of grand European hotel-style living that speaks to today’s trendsetters,” said developers Izak Senbahar and Simon Elias of Alexico Group.

The hotel’s high-end amenities include a Frederic Fekkai salon, a state-of-the-art fitness center, an airport concierge and stylish bikes that sport The Mark’s signature black and white striped design. Renowned French designer Jacques Grange is the man responsible for the hotel’s striking and unique design. Creating rooms that calm and soothe their guests, Grange also commissioned objets d’art, furniture and lighting pieces by artists like Karl Lagerfeld, Eric Schmitt and Todd Eberle.

Though guests have their choice of chic eateries right outside the hotel (Sant' Ambroeus, Daniel and Café Boulud are all within blocks), they need not leave the building to experience the city’s finest fare at The Mark Restaurant and Bar by JeanGeorges Vongerichten, where power figures from all walks make it a place to see and be seen.

When superstorm Sandy wreaked havoc on the city this past October and forced Downtown residents to abandon their apartments, some of the city’s boldest names found themselves in need of a five-star refuge to wait out the storm. It came to no surprise that many of them landed at The Mark on the corner of East 77th Street and Madison Avenue. Katie Holmes and her daughter Suri, Anna Wintour, Russell Crowe and Marc Jacobs all traveled uptown not just for heat and hot water, but for the personalized service they knew they would find at one of the city’s most iconic establishments.

The Mark also offers permanent residences for those who just don’t want to trade in high quality hotel living for an apartment building. Also designed by Grange, the apartments benefit from the hotel’s five-star service and amenities, giving owners the perks of luxury hotel service all in a space they can call their home every day of the year. Now only six residences remain, including the duplex penthouse. With a grand living room located under a 26-foot landmark cupola, the five bedroom, seven bathroom penthouse also features a 2,400-square-foot private roof terrace. Offering Central Park views, there are few places that can hold a candle to this penthouse’s chic style and idyllic location. After all, where else can you get a haircut by Frederic Fekkai, room service from the famous restaurateur Jean-Georges, and a shoeshine from John Lobb right in your own home?

ust south of the equator, on a Hindu island in the largest Muslim country in the world, I pass through small country villages and endless rice terraces— heading north towards the ravines high above the Ayung River. The familiar lush green landscape is from a brochure. Or a scene out of Eat, Pray, Love except the people who are riding bicycles don't look like Julia Roberts. There are ancient women walking on the side of the road balancing giant baskets of rice on their heads. There are chickens walking next to them. The single lane road splits, and in one direction is the town of Ubud—the cultural center of Bali.

Twenty-five years ago, when I first started going to Bali, nothing existed in this area but verdant rainforests and rice paddies. Today, there are five-star hotels, pilates classes and vegan restaurants. Walking into certain cafés, you’d think you were on the Upper West Side. But remarkably, it’s still a place where, despite the inevitable development, you can feel what it’s like to be immersed in nature, tranquility, and the Taksu which, in Balinese means “the indescribable essence of the spirit.”

There are a variety of ways to experience Bali. It’s a surfing mecca, a retreat for yoga, a historically and culturally rich island with temples and ceremonies to explore; there are also beaches to lie on and mountains to climb. Staying at the Alila Hotel in Ubud is for when you are in need of time and space to reflect and unwind, not the place to be if you want to party or learn kite surfing.

Built into the hillside, the Alila Hotel is a secluded and stylish place to stay if you’re interested in a quiet break. There are 56 rooms and villas resting on stilts, so the views are stunning no matter where you look.

I’d booked a room for a night and was upgraded to a villa with its own private pool —big enough to actually swim in, but not to be outdone by the hotel’s main infinity pool that overlooks a vertiginous gorge.

The room was modern and tasteful but didn’t feel sterile. Glass doors open up to a secluded garden. I found myself wanting to spend my entire stay in the enormous bathroom where doors open up onto a private lotus pond, an open air bathtub floats next to the fish and frogs hop around while you bathe.

In the evening, the sounds from outside are a melody of rustling leaves and the running water trickling out of a bamboo cylinder into the pond. At times, a choir of gekkos will chime in.

There is one restaurant and breakfast, lunch and dinner are served there unless you want to order up to the room. It’s somewhat tempting never to leave the villa but since I was only there for one night, I felt I should venture out of the bubble. The Plantation restaurant is an open air structure, a staple of Balinese Wantilan architecture; there are no walls. The cooling breeze serves as a natural air conditioner while take in the views and fresh air.

All of the vegetables, fruits and herbs are locally grown and a friend who lives nearby mentions that it’s the minerals in the volcanic soil in Bali that make everything taste better. Or, it could just be that you’re eating incredibly fresh food while sitting in a spectacular jungle.

The 17th Century Sangeh Monkey temple is nearby and the Alila Hotel offers “journeys” into the town of Ubud and surrounding areas. When I went for a swim in the morning, a monkey swung by the pool to observe. It might have been the quietest spot I’ve ever been in. In fact, it was so serene and relaxing, the only anxiety I had was counting the hours I had left before check-out.

resh off a flight from los angeles, rising fashion designer Minnie Mortimer is surrounded by friends like socialites Amanda Hearst, Luigi Tadini and her financier brother Topper, not to mention a line-up of beautiful models who could fill multiple Benetton ads in clothes Mortimer helped design for the newly launched, iconic country club label, Boast whose motto is “Back in Play.” The man responsible for re-launching the brand and nabbing Mortimer, John Dowling, Boast’s president, comments on the collaboration: “Minnie grew up wearing Boast as I had, so I knew she really understood the spirit of the brand and the world it came from. I admired Minnie’s striped t-shirt dresses, and thought a combination of Minnie’s style with Boast’s could work. When we sat down together, Minnie sketched a tennis dress with her fit and jersey fabric plus a Boast flat-knit collar and placket. That initial Minnie for Boast tennis dress was a hit. The rest is history.”

Mortimer’s own history is loaded with stylish DNA. Her uncle Stanley was married to social-swan Babe Paley and her close relatives Amanda Burden (Babe’s daughter) and Gigi Mortimer are regulars on international best-dressed lists. Marian Fountain Mortimer, better known as “Minnie,” is an individual of intersections; a member of the prominent and distinctively Manhattan Mortimer family, Mortimer isn’t one for conventional courses. Once a St. Mark’s boarding school brunette, bred on the Upper East Side, she now lives in the palm tree filled hills of Los Angeles—a life of sun, surfing and of course, designing clothes.

The only daughter of John Jay and Senga Mortimer, once the Gardening Editor of House & Garden magazine, Mortimer was at arms reach to glamorous endeavors growing up and oft accompanied her mother on shoots for the magazine, when Anna Wintour was the Editor in Chief of the publication. Mortimer’s mother preferred her daughter in Austrian straw hats with ribbons and Peter Pan collared smock dresses from Paris—all things proper. Mortimer recalls the time when she wanted to buy a pair of Madonna-like gloves. “My mother forbid them and so [my brother] Peter, being the generous darling he is, came to the rescue and bought them for me at Zitomer pharmacy,” she says. “It was beyond sweet.”

Though Mortimer dismisses the term “WASP” as a stereotype, there is no denying her preppy, New England upbringing. “I don’t think much about the term WASP,” she says. “Stereotypes and labels don’t interest me much.” At the age of 14, Mortimer sat front row at her first fashion show, Carolina Herrera (for whose daughter she was once a bridesmaid) wearing Carolina Herrera, of course. “As the lights went down, I fell in love. It was so exciting,” she says, her chocolate brown eyes widening like a girl in a candy store. It was on fashion shoots that Mortimer picked up a passion for photography. “Being on set just felt like home. I was always fascinated by photographers. I watched all of his gestures and motions. I was captivated.”

While at a dinner party, she sat next to Italian photographer Oberto Gili, whose work appears regularly in Vogue, Town & Country and numerous glossy publications. A then 19-year-old Mortimer proclaimed her lack of love for school and her zest to start working in the industry immediately. Mortimer calls herself a “charming under achiever” and couldn’t bear the idea of staying in college. “My attention would wander and I had a hard time completing tasks that didn’t interest me,” she confesses of her school days. Gili listened and granted her a trial in Milan as his assistant. She passed and went on to work with him around the globe for two years.

It was during her stint with Gili that Mortimer found herself in Los Angeles on assignment, during which time she landed at Diane Von Furstenberg and Barry Diller’s infamously private A-list Oscar lunch where the Beckhams, Anjelica Huston and Paris Hilton were just a few of the boldface names sitting at picnic tables and on Bohemian-chic throw rugs blanketing the lush rolling hills of Diller’s Bev57

erly Hills backyard. It was love at first sight over grilled chicken and couscous when she was introduced to Stephen Gaghan, the Academy Award winning screenwriter and director of Syriana and Traffic. “He’s tall and very handsome,” she says with a smile of Gaghan. It didn’t hurt that Gaghan was also smart, charming and whisked Mortimer off to Europe for three months, where he taught her how to surf in Biarritz, France for the first time. He also proposed in Biarritz. Talk about a jet-set romantic fairy tale. The couple married on May 19th 2007 at St. Thomas Church on Fifth Avenue. Mortimer wore an Oscar de la Renta (who is an old family friend) dress and writer/director Wes Anderson was a groomsman. These days, they hit the ocean as a couple regularly. “Its something we do together,” she says. “Surfing, skiing and tennis are lifetime sports. I love that and love doing them with Steve. I want to still be doing all three when I’m 100.”

Now ensconced in California, Mortimer goes back to New York constantly. She made sure to tackle the foreign terrain of LA fashion and in the end grew to adore it.

“I hate to be the master of the obvious, but Los Angeles is more casual and that’s not who I am. I love being smartly outfitted and have fun getting dressed everyday. This is the flip side to the uniform argument. Los Angeles has high highs and low lows regarding style. The surf and skate culture are true sources of inspiration for me.”

Mortimer does embrace her East Coast heritage and even loves being considered “a fish out of water,” in Hollywood but says the initial move was intense. “The culture shock of moving from New York to LA was greater for me than when I moved to Paris.

LA is très democratic—a total meritocracy and the popular currency in this town is creative.” Though she doesn’t necessarily prefer the hierarchy of Los Angeles to New York, Mortimer adds, “I really love both. In LA, people will take bigger risks creatively and that’s inspiring to me.”

Once settled in LA, Mortimer was ready to get down to business. Though an unlikely point of inspiration for such a feminine character, Mortimer assumed her husband’s closet, specifically Charvet dress shirts, as a muse for her next endeavor, designing a line of shirt-dresses, all produced in Los Angeles. And before she even wanted to launch her own line, a fashionable friend at Vogue wore a piece Mortimer created to a meeting with Wintour. Vogue’s queen immediately requested a story on the label that wasn’t even a real brand yet. The first time she saw her dress in Vogue, Mortimer admits “was surreal” and adds: “I still have 50 copies of the issue.”

Mortimer had grown up altering the typical into something terrific, as she often redid her Sacred Heart school uniforms into something more interesting and often daring.

In 2008, Mortimer officially launched her collection of effortless, timeless pieces for a customer she describes as “a bright young thing on the go.” Starlets like Taylor Swift and Reese Witherspoon are fans and the line was quickly picked up by SCOOP and every hip, pretty girl on both coasts. Mortimer also makes dresses for the enormously successful label Three Dots. “They approached me and I said yes right away. I have been wearing Three Dots since I was in boarding school. The collection is ten dresses in lots of colors and stripes—the perfect pieces for a weekend getaway.”

Mortimer’s hometown is clearly embedded in her habits and wardrobe as she clings onto her New York roots while incorporating her “breathe easy” LA life into the mix. Case in point: she’s “crazy” for fancy evening dresses by Valentino, Ferregamo and Carven, but will mix in trendier, newer labels like Suno, Acne and anything from Opening Ceremony, which is her all-time favorite shop. Though she considers herself “so inconsistent, I’m constant,” if Mortimer had to wear one look for the rest of her life she would pull inspiration from Angela Davis and sport a uniform of a “‘70s feminist, denim on denim: tight blue jean bell bottoms with a denim button down and horn rimmed glasses.”

More than a designer, Mortimer is also a mother to her four-year-old daughter, Tuesday, who has an affinity for tutu skirts and headbands. The two regularly surf together.

Well, Tuesday sits at the end of the board for the time being. On being a mom, Mortimer proclaims, “It’s amazing how big your heart gets. The capacity for love is just unreal.”

When asked if she sees herself and her brand developing into something like Carolina Herrera or Tory Burch, Mortimer humbly responds “It’s hard for me to think in those terms, but I’m addicted to designing. And I really only know how to be me.”

ot since Cristóbal Balenciaga and Narciso Rodriguez has a Spaniard caused such a commotion of chicness than Josep Font’s latest collection for Delpozo. When Font showed his Fall/Winter 2013 collection this past February, every editor and fashion expert in town oohed and aahed over the couture-like confections.

Founded by Jesús del Pozo in 1974, the fashion house made a name for itself through its designer’s distinctive craftsmanship. His prêt-à-porter and bridal collections were hailed as both elegant and innovative, and many crowned del Pozo as the next Balenciaga. Del Pozo passed away in 2011, and a year later, the house named Josep Font its new creative director, ushering in a new era of prestige for the Madrid-based label.

Olivia Palermo, Vogue’s Virginia Smith and Lauren Santo Domingo (who turned heads as she came in wearing the label) were all amongst the attendees sitting in the gilded ballroom chairs at Delpozo’s début statewide show. An extravagant floral carpet (matching the shoes of the collection, of course) served as the runway where Font showed pieces that played with volume and showcased unexpected combinations of colors, prints and embroidery. “Volume is one of the keys of the collection,” said Font, “We have concentrated on the organic shapes of contemporary architecture to define new silhouettes. In this collection, seams curve until they become authentic architectural modules. Straight lines have been abandoned for the modeling and shaping of roses, bias cut frills and cap sleeves.” Not surprisingly, Font’s background includes studies in architecture at the Universidad Politécnica in Catalonia, as well as fashion and pattern design training in Barcelona.

Font takes pride in Delpozo’s work ethic—one that mimics haute couture and was inspired by Jesús del Pozo’s own process. “Our work methodology remains true to haute couture; the garments take months of work. We realize that this is not a common way of working today, but it forms a part of the brand’s code of values.”

Fashion critics commended Font’s meticulous work; WWD noted the designer’s “fresh design sensibility” and style.com couldn’t resist comparing Font to the legendary Balenciaga, describing the collection as “prêt-à-couture.” For the first time in years, it seems the eyes of the fashion world are on Madrid.

How would you describe TriBeCa? Iâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;d describe it as its own special place. The roots of TriBeCa come from a warehouse district followed by a haven for artists. Now, TriBeCa combines itself with a unique residential quality. How did it become more family friendly? It was a result of a number of thingsâ&#x20AC;&#x201D;the popularity of the area, gentrification, open and large living spaces, access to beautiful parks and the growth of schools. How is TriBeCa different from, say, SoHo? TriBeCa is more quaint and quiet. It is closer to the Hudson River and parks. And unlike SoHo there is not a large amount of retail stores and tourists. TriBeCa also has iconic architecture and taller buildings. What percentage of the buildings in TriBeCa are conversions and what percentage are new developments? I would say that 85 percent are conversions and 15 percent are new buildings. Of the new properties being developed are there any that you are looking forward to? When did TriBeCa emerge as a residential neighborhood? In the early 80s, after artists began occupying the huge empty industrial lofts as live/work studios, the area began to attract others, including fashion industry types and celebrities.

Over the next decade it became the hip new neighborhood to live in. Are most of the apartments in TriBeCa lofts? Since TriBeCa was originally built as an industrial area, most buildings were not built as residences. When the conversion started in the 80s, we saw more contemporary and loft-like architecture in new housing versus the traditional prewar residences seen further uptown. Is this why living space in TriBeCa is said to be larger? Yes. I’d estimate the average rental apartment to be 1,500-square-feet and 1,878-square-feet for the sold apartment. What is the culture like here? The residential community was created by artists and continues to be based on that creative culture. There is also a great combination of business professionals. TriBeCa continues to thrive as one of Manhattan’s most desirable communities. Are there any new properties being built that you are looking forward to? I’m excited about 290 West Street which will have amazing river and sunset views with triple exposures—a rare find in the downtown market. Finally, any personal recommendations in the neighborhood? Yes! Locanda Verde for their Pappardelle, the pain perdu at Landmarc, café lattes at Laughing Man, Square Diner for celebrity sightings, Bubby’s for brunch, the downstairs lounge at Macao for drinks, and, of course, the TriBeCa Film Festival for flicks!

MAX DOBENS Forbes magazine recently reported that the West Village is one of the most affluent communities in the country and yet it remains one of the most charming, friendly and unchanged neighborhoods in Manhattan. How do you explain this? The West Village has some of the best restaurants in the city, a cool and hip “downtown” vibe and small buildings that allow lots of light to enter the streets and homes. It remains unchanged because the GVSHP (Greenwich Village Society for Historic Preservation) has done a great job protecting the integrity of the West Village. There are so many landmarked streets and homes. In fact our office at 137 Waverly Place is landmarked!

How much of your business is single family homes versus apartments? Our business is like our neighborhood—very diverse. We have a handful of agents who specialize in selling townhouses and others who sell co-ops and condiminuims and also handle rentals. There has been so much new development in New York recently, is this true of the West Village as well? Not so much so because of the landmark status that a lot of the West Village enjoys. Which is why when there is a new development, it is usually less than 30 units and sells at a quicker pace than other neighborhoods. Economoically speaking: Demand is higher and supply is lower in the West Village. What is the price range of your listings on the market today? It ranges from $18.5 million for a townhouse at 85 Charles Street to $239,000 for a studio at 155 East 49th Street and everything in-between. Diverse listings for a diverse neighborhood!

Q&A WITH PAULA CARAVELLI AND MARTHA ANGUS What is your favorite living space to design? Entry spaces are special for us because they set the tone for the interior and you can be a bit adventurous. We were honored when Iris Dankner asked us to be a part of Holiday House ‘12 last fall for the Breast Cancer Research Foundation. We designed the first two rooms and partnered with some of our favorite galleries and décor vendors to make them come to life. First impressions are imperative, so we chose an immense vintage Baccarat chandelier from TOM THOMAS GALLERY over the center table and then art, art, art!

Do you have any rules you follow when designing? Experience tells you when rules apply and when to ignore them. We draw things beforehand to study proportions and alignments and to ensure visual excitement.

And we’re never afraid to customize! For Holiday House, we needed two chic rugs in specific colors, shapes and sizes to complement an existing boldly-patterned marble floor. We turned to DORIS LESLIE BLAU (dorisleslieblau.com), whom we have worked with for decades. They created two sumptuous handmade silk/aloe fiber rugs—a large bordered hexagon for our “Winter Solstice” themed entry gallery and an abstract rendition of the breast cancer ribbon for the adjacent passageway, which we designed as a tribute to the late Evelyn Lauder. And, they made it happen in record time!

Where do you turn for inspiration, design and otherwise? Art is a very important source of inspiration for us. In New York, we have a wealth of galleries and exhibitions which are a catalyst for new concepts, colors, materials and details. We also visit Art Basel Miami or Switzerland every year.

We are fortunate to have great relationships with major galleries like CHEIM & READ, where we commissioned a pair of “shaped canvas” paintings by Ron Gorchov and complimented them with a collection of organic MAISON GERARD ceramics. At VALERIE GOODMAN, we found a stunning lacquered screen by French artist Jacques Jarrige to “crown” the fireplace and in the Lauder Tribute space, we used his exquisite Fiori chandelier cut from a single sheet of gilded brass!

Is there one essential product that you believe every home should have? Every home should have art—whether it’s an original oil painting or a humble work on paper. It’s the soul of the living space!

How did you get started in the business of real estate? Out of college I worked at CBS in their broadcast division. I was show secretary for Captain Kangaroo then for the soap opera Love of Life. After that I got into the music business with CBS Records and then CBS Records International. I was making music clips and worked with artists like Michael Jackson and Cyndi Lauper. At some point, after coming up with a concept for a TV show—that got optioned, but didn’t get picked up—I realized I wanted to try something new.

How long were you at CBS at this point? 10 years. A friend of mine sent me the book Nothing Down by Robert Alan. It is a book about how to start investing in real estate without putting any money down—which was perfect because I had no money at the time. I started meeting with brokers to purchase an available property. One broker suggested that I get into the business as a broker myself.

What did you do? I interviewed and was hired at William B. May. After my first year there, I became their number-one top producer for the next 18 years.

How long have you been at Sotheby’s International Realty? I’ve been at Sotheby’s International Realty for eight years—since 2005.

Is there a particular area you specialize in? I started selling townhouses at William B. May. At Sotheby’s International Realty, I cover it all—co-ops, condominiums, the east and west sides—although, I’d say most of my work is uptown. For unique or special situations, I’ll work downtown. For example, there was the Richard Meier condominium on the water at 176 Perry Street. I was offered a listing by Bill Joy who owned a triplex that he actually had Meiers build out for him—I sold the unit to Hugh Jackman.

Have you sold any more homes to people in the entertainment industry? The very first townhouse I sold was to Wynton Marsalis! And I’ve sold a downtown loft to Cyndi Lauper…

Is there a particular part of town that is high in demand right now? I’d say the Upper East and West sides.

What homes are you most excited about? There is one apartment that is particularly special. It is at 27 West 67th Street and was the first artist studio on West 67th Street. It was envisioned by 10 artists and completed in 1903. The unit has a living room/studio with a 17-foot tall ceiling and the asking price is $4,750,000.

Another one is an amazing four-bedroom duplex at Beekman Place, which was built by John D. Rockefeller in 1929—originally as a place to put up friends but later converted into a co-op. Asking price for this one is $9,750,000.

Finally, how would you say the market is right now? The New York market is amazing year-in, yearout. Everyone wants to have a piece of the big apple!

Have there been a lot of foreign investments lately? If so, where are these buyers from? Being fluent in French, Italian and German is a great help to me in working with foreign buyers. I recently worked with a French family and am currently working with a German family—both families appreciated conducting business in their own language. Foreign investors are well-informed, discerning and comprise an increasingly higher percentage of the buyers we meet.

What is your general outlook for 2013? Manhattan real estate is magnificent and always in demand as a timeless investment. Those who choose to live in this exciting city manage to carve out a special place for themselves— and facilitating that process is my privilege.

I am a born and bred New Yorker!

How did you get into the business of real estate?

I became a broker when I was in my 20s. I knew right away that real estate was what I wanted to do.

How has your career changed over the years?

When I first started I was selling mostly studios and small one bedrooms since it was what my demographic and peers were buying and selling. Over the years I have grown with my clients. The ones who were purchasing studios are now my two and three bedroom home buyers. In fact, my very first deal was a small one bedroom on Fifth Avenue. That same client bought a penthouse through me in Williamsburg. And now that they had a baby they asked that I sell their penthouse—which I did—and they moved to the suburbs.

What makes you unique as a broker?

Many of my clients are clients that I have worked with before or referrals from past clients. What makes me unique as a broker is that I really listen to what my buyers want and I try hard to keep open communication with my clients at all times. I know this may seem very basic but it’s surprising how many agents don’t do this.

Something else that makes me unique is that I create video property profiles for almost all of my listings. This extra exposure has been a key component in keeping myself and my clients’ properties ahead of the competition and getting them sold.

Is there a neighborhood that you recommend for value as well as lifestyle for young families?

Riverside South has great buildings for lifestyle. For value, the Upper East Side is surprisingly a good value. And it is great for families too—there are many wonderful schools, nearby parks, museums and more!

What's hot on the market now?

The market in general is very active but condominiums in particular are moving very fast! And if the unit has a special quality, like a view for example, it will move even quicker.

What is your long term outlook for the real estate market in New York City?

I think the real estate market is only going to get stronger and stronger. Comparably speaking, New York City is more affordable then many other cities. Also, if you look at what happened when the economy collapsed in 2008, New York City took a hit, but it was not like anywhere else. New York City market continually proves to be a safe investment. When sale prices were down, rentals were up. It is safer than the stock market!

New Yorkers ushered in Fashion Week with the celebration of Prabal Gurung’s line for Target. The party’s carnival theme meant that guests got to ride on carousels, find out their destiny from fortune tellers and eat tons and tons of cotton candy while they waited on line for their turn to shop the Gurung’s colorful collection. When all was shopped and done, guests were treated to a performance by Ne-Yo.
