erzlich Willkommen zur Jänner und Februar Ausgabe von „Enjoy Opatija“! Auch in den Wintermonaten gibt es einiges in Opatija und Umgebung zu sehen. Es werden sicherlich wieder zwei abwechslungsreiche Monate in unserer Region. In order to make your visit easier, we have collected special tips and topics for you. It’s carnival time in Opatija and the well-known Balinjerada (ball-bearing wheels race) that takes place for the 34th time. The carnival parade in Rijeka is an absolute highlight, you should definitely not miss it! (P. 4/5). On page 11, you can read everything about a topequipped dental clinic in Kastav which from January expands also in Opatija. Now is the perfect time to walk around Opatija and its surroundings therefore, on pages 12/13 we have put together the most popular sights and places that you just have to see. Karneval in Rijeka (17.01. bis 01.03.2017) Rijeka Carnival (17th January until 1st March 2017)

terben, aber niemals aufgeben! – dies ist das Motto des Karnevals in Rijeka, das ihn auch verkörpert. Trotz der langen Geschichte zeigt der lustige, trotzige, ungezähmte und doch kritische Geist des Karnevals keine Müdigkeit, sondern wächst mit den neuen Generationen der Karnevalisten immer weiter und bindet in sein Reigen aktuelle Ereignisse und die lange Tradition, die in dieser Gegend viel länger gepflegt wird, als man vielleicht annehmen mag. 1982 war ein besonderes Jahr für den Karneval in Rijeka, denn da zogen zum ersten Mal drei Gruppen entlang des Korsos - Lako ćemo, Pehinarski Feštari und Halubajski Zvončari. Veranstaltet wurde der Anfang des Karnevals vom damaligen Tourismusverband der Gemeinde Rijeka. Dies war der Auslöser und ein Zeichen dafür, dass die maskierte Welt zu etwas Größerem fähig ist. Seit dem Anfang des Karnevals in Rijeka wuchs die Zahl der Mitwirkenden mit der Zahl der Besucher. Aus den drei Gruppen wurden mit der Zeit mehr als 100 mit einer fünfstelligen Zahl an Mitwirkenden und so vielen Zuschauern, dass man sie schon seit langem nicht mehr zählen kann. Denn, außer den Besuchern vor Ort, begleitet eine große Anzahl von Zuschauern das Geschehen auch im Fernsehen. Es gibt auch eine Onlineübertragung im Internet – somit wird der Karneval der ganzen Welt nahe gebracht.

ie but never give up” – this is the motto that summarizes all the best that the Rijeka Carnival represents. Despite its long history, a cheerful, stubborn, uncontrollable but also critical Carnival spirit shows no tiredness, but thrives from year to year, growing through a new generation of Carnival participants, feeding the participants with new ideas and at the same time loyal to its long tradition. And this tradition is much longer than one might imagine. There is evidence of Carnival in Rijeka going back into the Middle Ages, long before the Carnival in Rio de Janeiro was established. 1982 was a special year for the Rijeka Carnival because in that year, for the first time, under the organization of the Rijeka Tourist Board, 3 carnival groups (Lako ćemo, Pehinarski feštari and Halubje Bellringers) performed a “walk” on the Korzo (main street) under masks. It was a driving spark but also an indication that the world under masks is ready for something much bigger. The number of participants in the Rijeka Carnival has grown together with the number of visitors. From those first 3 groups, today it counts over 100 groups with the number of participants reaching five figures. The number of spectators is not possible to count accurately because in addition to those following the parades in person, a great number follow it in front of their TV sets. After many years of both organized and spontaneous masked parties,

Nach Jahren organisierter und spontaner Maskenfeste, Faschingsbegebenheiten, berühmter und geschichtlicher Persönlichkeiten und Umweltkatastrophen rollt der Karneval in Rijeka unaufhaltsam weiter, ohne Angst zu haben jemals in Vergessenheit zu geraten. Der beste Beweis dafür ist der Kinderkarnevalzug, der der großen Parade auf Schritt und Tritt folgt, jedes Jahr immer zahlreicher und kreativer wird und damit eine neue Generation von Karnevalisten aufzieht, die die Tradition weiterführen werden. Zu guter Letzt möchten wir Sie einladen den Karneval in Rijeka zu besuchen, denn so können Sie ihn erst wahrhaftig erleben, vor Ort und mit allen Sinnen – Sei was du willst! Besuche den Karneval von Rijeka!

The best evidence thereof is the Children’s Carnival Parade that follows in the footsteps of the “big” parade and is more and more numerous each year. It is also growing more and more fanciful, a real nursery garden of new carnival participants who will continue this tradition. At the end of the story, what remains is the invitation, because the best way to experience the Rijeka Carnival is to come here and live it with all your senses – Be whatever you want to be! ie Balinjerada ist seit dreißig Jahren eine der wohl bekannten Attraktion des Karnevals in Opatija. Es handelt sich dabei um ein Seifenkistenrennen auf der Hauptstraße der Stadt mit selbst gebastelten Fahrzeugen, die auf Kugellagern (im lokalen Dialekt Balinjere genannt – daher der Name) statt Rädern fahren. Die Balinjerada ist zum Teil ein Rennen, bei dem der Fahrer sein Geschick als Pilot unter Beweis stellen muss, und zum Teil ein Karnevalsumzug, bei dem die Karnevalsgruppen durch ihre mit viel Liebe und Mühe gebastelten fahrbaren Untersätze oft aktuelle gesellschaftliche Ereignisse kritisieren.

or the last thirty years, this exciting race of self-made vehicles that run on ball-bearings (known locally as „balinjere“ – hence the name) instead of wheels, down Opatija‘s main street, to the delight of thousands of spectators, has always been the original attraction of the carnival in Opatija. The Balinjerada is partly a race in which the „pilots“ of these unusual homemade vehicles must show their driving skills, and partly a carnival parade, in which carnival groups criticize current social events with their imaginative constructions, into which they have invested months of effort.

Das Mädchen mit der Möve Maiden with Seagull
A
uf der Landzunge vor dem ehemaligen Friedhof streckt ein aus Bronze gegossenes Mädchen die Hand nach einer Möve aus. Dies ist jedoch eine neuere Skulptur, ein Werk des Bildhauers Car, die 1956 hier aufgestellt und zum Symbol Opatijas wurde. An ihrer Stelle stand zuvor die Statue „Madonna del mare“ des Künstlers Rathausky aus Graz (von ihm stammt auch der Brunnen „Helios und Selene“ im Park, Wahrzeichen der Kirche des HI. Jakob und des Hotels Imperial), bis sie ein Sturm vom Felsen riss. Die Madonna wurde aufgestellt, um über die Seele des Grafen Arthur Kesselstadt zu wachen, der 1891 unweit von dieser Landzunge in den vorösterlichen Wellen verschwand. Bei diesem Ausflug verlor auch die Gräfin Fries ihr Leben, während ihr Sohn Georg gerettet wurde.
O
n the promontory in front of a former cemetery a girl of bronze extends her arm to a seagull. This beautiful and poetic sculpture, the work of sculptor Zvonko Car, was cast and put into place in 1956 and immediately became one of Opatija’s symbols. The place where the statue now stands was previously occupied by another statue, the “Madonna del Mare”, the work of sculptor Rathausky from Graz (his is also the fountain “Helios and Selene” in the park between St. James’s Church and hotel Imperial), until it was demolished by a storm. The “Madonna” was erected to keep vigil over the soul of Count Arthur Kesselstadt, who vanished, not far off from that promontory, swallowed by severe pre-Easter waves in 1891. During that excursion the Countess Fries also lost her life, but her son Georg was saved. Today a gilded variant of the Madonna can be seen in front of Saint James’s church.

er Naturpark Učka zeichnet sich vor allem durch seine außerordentliche landschaftliche Vielfalt auf einer verhältnismäßig kleinen Fläche aus. Der Berg Učka ist vielleicht noch der einzige Ort auf der Welt, wo man die endemische Glockenblume Učkarski zvončić (Campanula tommasiniana) fotografieren kann, und eine der letzten Orte Europas, wo das geduldige Auge des Vogelfreundes mit eindrucksvollen Silhouetten des Gänsegeiers (Gyps fulvus) oder des Steinadlers (Aquila chrysaetos) belohnt wird. Diese zwei Arten sind repräsentative Exemplare der Vogelwelt von Učka, ein Gebiet, in dem über 70 Vogelarten nisten und sogar mehr zeitweilig dieses Gebiet besuchen. In nur wenigen Stunden führt Sie einer der zahlreichen Bergwege von den malerischen mediterranen Städten an der Küste über die waldreichen Berghänge von Učka zum 1401 Meter hohen Gipfel Vojak. Aber das Bild von Učka wäre nicht vollständig, wenn der Einfluss von Menschenhand im Zusammenhang mit dem geschichtlichen Erbe der Region unausgesprochen bliebe. Gemeint sind die Funde in einigen Höhlen im Gebiet des Naturparks Učka. Diese sind ein eindeutiger Nachweis der kontinuierlichen Besiedlung des Gebiets bereits 12.000 Jahre vor Christus. Neben dem reichen archäologischen Erbe sind auch das architektonische und das kulturelle Erbe sowie die lokale Tradition und die verschiedenen Kulturveranstaltungen sehr interessant. Die Palette der Unterhaltungsmöglichkeiten vervollständigt das Angebot an lokalen Spezialitäten aus Kastanien (Maronen), Spargel und anderen Naturprodukten.

čka Nature Park is characterised by an exceptional variety of environmental features on a relatively small area. Učka is probably the only place in the world where one can take a photograph of the endemic bell-flower Učkarski zvončić (Campanula tommasiniana) and one of the last European locations where patient bird watchers will be rewarded with impressive glimpses of the griffon vulture (Gyps fulvus) or golden eagle (Aquila chrysaetos). These species are two outstanding representatives of the ornithological life on Učka, which is home to more than 70 nesting birds and many other birds that occasionally visit this mountain. Within only a couple of hours, any one of the park’s numerous hiking trails will take you from the picturesque Mediterranean architecture of the coastal towns through the wooded slopes of Učka mountain up to its highest peak, Vojak, at an elevation of 1,401 meters. However, the experience of the Učka Mountain would be incomplete without its human heritage: the discoveries in a several of its caves bears evidence of the unbroken continuity of life on the mountain dating as far back as 12,000 B.C. Besides this rich archaeological heritage, very interesting is also the architectural and cultural heritage, as well as the region’s local traditions and cultural events. Here you will find good opportunities for entertainment and many chances to try some of the culinary specialities based on chestnuts, asparagus and other local health foods.

D
ieser Karnevalsumzug auf der Hauptstraße von Opatija stellt die spielerische Kreativität der Kinder in voller Pracht vor. Mit viel Mühe und Geduld stellen Kinder aus ganz Kroatien und auch einige aus dem Ausland selbst gebastelte Kostüme her und schreiten in einer Karnevalsprozession von der Markthalle bis zum Stadtstrand Slatina. Dabei sorgt ihr buntes Treiben für große Begeisterung bei zahlreichen Zuschauern; begleitet werden sie von Animateuren und Musikern. Der Höhepunkt der Veranstaltung findet am Strand Slatina mit Erfrischungen und einem interessanten Unterhaltungsprogramm statt.

A
parade on Opatija‘s main street presents all the diversity of children‘s creativity and playfulness. In carefully designed masks, made with much effort and patience, hundreds of children from all over Croatia and abroad walk on the route from the square in front of the market hall to Slatina Beach, accompanied by entertainers and musicians and supported by numerous amused spectators. The event ends on Slatina Beach with a gathering of all participants and an entertainment programme.
