erzlich Willkommen zur zweiten Ausgabe von „Enjoy Opatija“! Der Juni wird ein abwechslungsreicher Monat in unserer Region. Um Ihren Besuch zum Highlight werden zu lassen, haben wir spezielle Tipps und Themen für Sie zusammengestellt. The first one is traditional Cherry Festival in Lovran which you shouldn’t miss. Taste various types of cherry cakes, enjoy the special musical program or buy beautiful, freshly picked Lovran cherries (see pages 12-13). At the end of June (literally) a “blast in the sky” in Opatija awaits on you: The fireworks festival (page. 6) where the youngest and those little bit older will be amazed. olosko, ein kleines Fischerdorf entlang der Uferpromenade „Lungo Mare“, zu Fuß etwa 30 Minuten vom Zentrum Opatijas entfernt, ist eine gastronomische Oase mit einigen der besten kroatischen Fischrestaurants. Doch seit kurzem findet man hier auch Süßes von höchster Qualität. Die Patisserie „KaoKakao“ überraschte uns mit ihrem häuslichen Ambiente und gemütlicher Atmosphäre - und erfreute uns mit Desserts, deren feiner Geschmack schwer in Worte zu fassen ist. In einem Interview mit Anja Zulić, der Eigentümerin und Konditorin, versuchten wir das Geheimnis dieser süßen Perle von Volosko zu lüften.

F: Volosko ist ein ruhiger Ort, ohne den üblichen Stadttrubel. Wie kamen Sie auf die Idee, eine exquisite Konditorei in einem so kleinen Ort zu eröffnen? A: Ich bin in Volosko geboren und aufgewachsen, allein damit fühle ich mich an diesen Ort sehr gebunden. Als sich Volosko in den letzten paar Jahren aber zu einem gastronomischen Markenzeichen entwickelt hat, bemerkte ich, dass es zu den wirklich hochwertigen Spezialitäten einen Mangel an Spitzendesserts gibt. Ein kleines süßes Etwas, das die gastronomische Erfahrung abrunden würde. Ich bin selbst ein großer Fan von Süßigkeiten. Ich habe die verschiedensten Konditoreien in der Welt besucht und die besten Geschmacksnoten in entspanntem Ambiente genossen. So ist in mir ein geheimer Wunsch herangewachsen – nämlich selbst einmal eine gemütliche Konditorei in Volosko zu eröffnen. Und irgendwann war die Zeit reif, als das Leben mit langsamerem Tempo lief, alles seinen Platz hatte und die Kinder grösser waren. Ich nahm allen Mut zusammen, verließ meinen früheren Arbeitsplatz im Tourismus und begann meine Umschulung, um endlich Konditorin zu werden und mir meinen Traum zu erfüllen.

F: Das war ein wirklich großer und mutiger Schritt für Sie. Was sind denn Ihre Eindrücke ein Jahr nach der Eröffnung? War es die Mühe wert? A: Aber sicher! Das Geschäft läuft sehr gut. Unsere Kunden erkannten die hier angebotene Qualität. Am besten illustriert das die Tatsache, dass wir
unser Abenteuer mit drei Mitarbeitern begonnen haben, während wir jetzt, anderthalb Jahre später, acht Mitarbeiter beschäftigen. Im Herbst, Winter und Frühjahr kommen unsere Gäste meist aus der Gegend, doch während der Sommersaison ändert sich das natürlich. Zu der Zeit können Sie dann alle möglichen Sprachen in unserer Patisserie hören! Was uns sehr glücklich macht, ist die wachsende Zahl der zufriedenen Kunden, die uns das mit ihren Feedbacks und netten Kommentaren in den sozialen Netzwerken gratulieren oder einfach ein schönes Dankeschön schreiben – das ist letztlich das beste Marketing und zugleich die Bestätigung, dass sich der Aufwand wirklich lohnt. F: Ich habe bemerkt, dass Sie für Ihre Kuchen ungewöhnliche Kombinationen von Aromen verwenden. Zum Beispiel Karamell mit einer Prise Meersalz. Woher nehmen Sie sich Ihre Inspirationen? A: Da ich nie die Gelegenheit hatte, offizielle kulinarische Schulen oder Kurse zu besuchen, brauchte in meinem Fall dieser Prozess seine Zeit. Ich habe Wege gefunden, um mich zu informieren. So investiere ich zum Beispiel viel in Fachliteratur, besuche verschiedene namhafte Konditoreien, probiere viele verschiedene Rezepte aus. Bis ich meine eigenen Rezepte schaffe und mit dem Geschmack zufrieden bin. F: Was ist Ihr persönliches Lieblingsstück in Ihrer Auslage? A: Das ist eine wirklich schwierige Frage! Eigentlich ist es ein sehr einfaches Dessert, ein Kuchen, für den man Meilen fährt, um ihn zu genießen - er heißt „Millefoglie“. Ebenso auch unser Kuchen mit der Unterschrift „KaoKakao“, der ist auch ausgezeichnet. Ich erwähne es unseren Kunden gegenüber immer gerne, dass ich weder Margarine, noch fertige oder halbfertige Produkte für unsere Kuchen verwende – bei uns werden nur hochwertige Zutaten beigemischt, wie belgische Schokolade, Sahne und Butter für den Grundteig, die Basis. Diese Basis wird dann mit frischen Saisonfrüchten ergänzt und das Angebot ändert sich dadurch ständig. Alle unsere Gäste haben eines gemeinsam - sie fühlen sich bei uns wohl und wie zu Hause!.

V
olosko, a small fishing village only 30 minutes of leisurely walk along the “Lungo Mare” promenade from the center of Opatija, is a gastronomic oasis with some of the best Croatian fish restaurants. Recently it also became home of top quality desserts. We visited the “KaoKakao” patisserie which delighted us with its home ambiance, cozy atmosphere and desserts whose flavours are hard to put into words. We are sure, however, that “KaoKakao” will make you come back again and again. In an interview with the owner and pastry chef, Anja Žulić, we found out the secrets of this sweet pearl of Volosko.
Q: Volosko is a quiet place, without the usual city crowd. How come you decided to open a pastry shop in such a small place with not so many people to come around? A: I was born and raised here in Volosko, therefore feel attached to this place. In last couple of years, however, it developed into a gastronomical location of choice. I noticed that, in addition to top-quality specialties you can enjoy in Volosko, there is a lack of premium desserts that would give you sweet finish to the gastronomic experience. Since I am a big fan of sweets and have visited various pastry shops in the world, enjoyed the excellent flavours and relaxed ambiences, a secret wish was born within me to do the same in Volosko. At one point in time, when everything in my life came into place and my children grew up, I mustered the courage, left the former job in tourism and started retraining in order to become a pastry chef and fulfil my dream. Q: This was a really big and courageous step for you. What are your impressions one year after the opening? Was it worth the effort? A: It sure was! Business is going very well. People recognized the quality we offer, and this is best illustrated by the fact that we started our adventure with three employees while now, a year and a half later, our staff consists of eight employees. During autumn, winter and spring our guests are mostly local, but during the summer season, this picture changes. At that time, various foreign languages can
be heard in our patisserie. What makes us extremely happy is an increasing number of feedback and nice comments on various social networks which, ultimately, is the best marketing and confirmation that the effort really paid off. Q: I noticed you do unusual combinations of flavours in your cakes, for example caramel with a flower of sea salt. Where does your inspiration come from? A: Since I never had the opportunity to attend official culinary schools or courses, in my case that process took time. I had to find the way to inform myself so I invested a lot in professional literature, visited various renowned pastry shops, tried out many different recipes until it tasted the way I wanted it to taste. Q: What is your personal favourite pastry from your shop? A: That is a very difficult question! But there is one very simple dessert that makes people drive miles to enjoy it. It is called “Millefoglie”. Also, there is our signature cake “KaoKakao”. I always like to mention that in my cakes I don’t use any margarine as well as finished or semi-products. For our sweets we use only high-quality ingredients like Belgian chocolate, as well as cream and butter for the base. This base, then, is complemented with fresh seasonal ingredients (fruits) so the offer is constantly changing. All of our guests have one thing in common, with us they feel at home, and that is what makes us happy!

uring the Fireworks Festival, the sky over Opatija is lit up by fantastic artistic creations. The fireworks launched from a pontoon floating in the sea fill the sky with magnificent colours. ovran, nur 7 km westlich von Opatija, ist Teil der Riviera und bekannt für exklusiven, renovierten Villen aus der Zeit der österreichisch-ungarischen Monarchie, wie Astra, Eugenia, Magnolia und Blankenstein. Die weitbekannte Lovraner Kirsche ähnelt sehr der berühmten „Lambert Kirsche“. Die Einheimischen nennen sie „Brtosinka“, ihre Qualität und ihr Geschmack sind sehr beliebt und hoch angesehen. Während des Kirschfestivals kann man die verschiedensten aus Kirschen zubereitete Speisen und Desserts in vielen Cafés und Restaurants in Lovran probieren – unter anderem hier: Restaurant Kvarner, Hotel Excelsior, Hotel Restaurant Villa Astra, Hotel Restaurant Draga di Lovrana, Restaurant Knezgrad, Restaurant Riviera, Restaurant Stanger, Bistro Oaza versucht werden , Restaurant Lovranska vrata, Restaurant Stari grad, Restaurant Pizzeria Delfino, Konoba Kali Medveja, Restaurant Bellavista , Lovranski Pub, Konoba Marun und City Cafe Lovran. Im Laufe des Tages können Sie frisch gepflückte Lovraner Kirschen kaufen, frische Kirschkuchen und aus Kirschen zubereitete Leckereien probieren oder originelle Souvenirs mit nach Hause nehmen. Am Abend endet das Fest mit dem Aufschneiden des riesigen zehn Meter langen Lovraner Kirschstrudels, begleitet von Klängen eines Folkloreensembles. 16TH CHERRY DAYS IN LOVRAN 11. - 19.06.2016 The renowned Lovran cherry is very similar to the well-known species of Lambert cherry. The locals call them Brtosinka; its quality and taste is highly regarded. During the day, you can purchase freshly picked Lovran cherries, taste cherry cakes and treats, or buy original souvenirs. In the evening, the Feast ends with the slicing of a giant Lovran cherry strudel (10 m long) and performances by folklore ensembles. er Strand Tomaševac ist sandig mit betonierten Liegeflächen und liegt an der Strandpromenade Lungo Mare in der Nähe des Hotel Ambasador in Opatija. Für Kinder und Jugendliche ist dieser Strand besonders geeignet, da es jede Menge Platz zum Spielen gibt und der weitläufige Spielplatz nicht nur eine Kletterpyramide, Rutschen und Schaukeln bietet, sondern auch einen Fußballplatz. Schirme und Liegen kann man sich am Strand ausleihen und es gibt auch ein Strandcafé mit Speisen und Getränken.

More than 100 m² of colorful fantasy world is waiting for you and your children. A wonderland for children from age 1 to 12 where they are allowed to do what makes them the happiest: drama, mess and noise. Next door to the playground is a bistro where you can enjoy coffee with a beautiful view of Opatija while your kids are playing.
Family beach
T
he Tomaševac Beach is partly sandy and partly concrete, located on the Lungo Mare promenade near the Ambassador Hotel in Opatija. A special feature of the beach is the fact that it is fully adapted for children and has plenty of room to play with a spacious playground with not only the pyramid for climbing, slides, swings, but also smaller football pitch. Parasols and deck chairs can be rented on the beach, and there is a coffee bar on the beach with food and drink.
