erzlich Willkommen zur Oktober Ausgabe von „Enjoy Opatija“! Der Herbst ist gekommen und trotzdem wird der Oktober wieder ein abwechslungsreicher Monat in unserer Region. Um Ihren Besuch zum Highlight werden zu lassen, haben wir wieder spezielle Tipps und Themen für Sie zusammengestellt Das traditionelle Maronenfest in Lovran und den Nebenorten ist auf jeden ein Besuch wert! Eine Vielfalt an Maronispezialitäten erwartet Sie auf den Festen sowie in einigen Restaurants (S. 4/5). In order to have lots of highlights in your visit, we have special tips and topics made for you. The traditional chestnut festival in Lovran and its surroundings is definitely event worth a visit! In the “chestnut month” you can try great variety of chestnut specialties offered at the festivals and many restaurants (p 4/5). If you want to have some “nature time” we recommend a nice walk along the Carmen Sylva promenade, October is the best time for light walks through the woods(p.12/13). For lovers of classical music, this month we have complete program of Festival Kvarner written for you (p.6). In the “Kids Corner” (p. 14), we visited another playground for kids. 43. MARUNADA (Maronenfest) 43rd MARUNADA (The Marron Chestnut Festival)
I
m Mittelalter wird Lovran in den Chroniken als ein Ort der Seefahrer, Fischer und Obsthändler erwähnt. Die Einwohner von Lovran handelten hauptsächlich mit ihren bekannten Maronen aus den Obstgärten an den Hängen des Učka-Massivs. Die Lovraner Marone gehört neben der Marone aus Slowenien und der Marone Gentile de Torino aus Italien zu den besten europäischen Maronensorten. Während der österreich-ungarischen Monarchie war die Marone Ende des 19. Jh. und Anfang des 20 Jh. so gefragt, dass sie zu den Märken in Triest, Wien und München gefahren und dort verkauft wurde. Da diese Marone sehr hochwertig war und ausgezeichnet schmeckte, gab es nie Probleme mit dem Verkauf.
C
hronicles from the Middle Ages show that Lovran was a city of sailors, fishermen and fruit merchants. The people of Lovran mostly traded their renowned marron chestnuts that grew in the orchards of the Učka slopes. Lovran’s marrons, along with Slovenia’s Goricki and Italy’s Gentile de Torino are considered to be the highest quality species of chestnuts in Europe. During Austro-Hungarian reign, towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, these chestnuts were so much in demand that cartloads were supplied to markets in Trieste, Vienna and Munich. Because of their quality and great taste, the selling of these chestnuts was never a problem.

Das traditionelle Maronenfest (Marunada) beginnt Mitte Oktober, wo auf den Strassen außer gebratenen Maronen auch der einheimische Honigschnaps „Medica“ und junger Wein angeboten wird, dazu gibt es in den Cafés und Konditoreien aus Kastanien-Maronen zubereitete Kuchen, Süßspeisen und Torten. Auch die Gaststätten „Konobas“ und Restaurants nehmen am Fest teil und laden die Gäste zu Gerichten zubereitet nach alten Rezepten ein. Das Maronenfest bereichern jedes Jahr auch zahlreiche Sportveranstaltungen und Events, an denen auch Besucher teilnehmen können, wie zum Beispiel das Boccia-Turnier, die Radtour Giro di Marunada, die Bergtour „Marunada“, ein Angelwettbewerb, ein Oldtimertreffen, eine Regatta und vieles mehr.
The Marunada Festival traditionally begins mid-October. During the Marunada, along with an offer of roasted chestnuts, a type of mead (domestic brandy made from honey) and young wine may be consumed too. In cafes and patisseries, pastries, sweets and cakes made with marrons will be available (chestnut cream, chestnut purée, chestnut ice cream, chestnut frappé, chestnut sorbet ...), while in taverns and restaurants one may taste original domestic dishes featuring marrons (special dishes with chestnuts – turkey breast stuffed with chestnuts, cutlet au gratin with chestnuts, rump-steak with chestnut sauce, flaming crepes with chestnut cream ...) Every year the Marunada is accompanied by a series of sports and entertainment events. Traditionally held during the Marunada are the following: bocce invitational tournament, the Giro di Marunada, a bicycle tournament, a mountaineering excursion, training regatta, old-timer cars’ meeting and a fishing competition.

ahler war hier, Puccini besuchte es und Lehár wie Kálmán waren Stammgäste: Die Rede ist vom unvergleichlichen Opatija, einer Stadt mit den wohl schönsten (Konzert-)orten am gesamten Mittelmeer. Was bewegte uns zur Gründung des Festival Kvarner? Gleich vorweg: Wir nehmen keine Neugründung im eigentlichen Sinne vor, wir beleben nur die alte, bereits bewährte Idee eines Gesamtkunstwerkes, das diese Region schon vor über 100 Jahren ausgezeichnet und geprägt hat! Das Interessante an der Region Kvarner war und ist, dass nicht die Bewohner dieser Gegend die Kvarner Bucht als neuen Urlaubsort etabliert haben, sondern dass die Gäste diesen einzigartigen Ort quasi selbst „gefunden“ haben. So auch 2008: Jahrelang waren Michael Fendre und sein Team von der ad libitum Konzertwerkstatt auf der Suche nach „dem“ Ort, an dem die Musik eine außergewöhnliche Symbiose mit der Landschaft und dem Klima eingehen könnte, um so dem Publikum ein einzigartiges, unvergessliches Gesamterlebnis zu bieten. Sieben Jahre hat diese Suche gedauert, bis sich der Ort und die Musik gefunden haben - bis sich Opatija wie schon vor über 100 Jahren „wieder selbst“ präsentiert hat. Der Cellist Matthias Bartolomey und der Geiger und Mandolaspieler Klemens Bittmann führen in ihrem Zusammenspiel ihr stark in der klassischen Musiktradition verankertes Instrumentarium auf einen neuen Weg. Mit Spontanität und Improvisation der Jazzästhetik verbinden sie intim groovende bis hin zu kraftvoll rockenden Elementen. „Selten hat man Streicher gehört, die sich so lustvoll dem Groove hingeben. We are talking about the unique Opatija - a place, where, probably, the most beautiful (concert) venues of the entire Adriatic coast are situated. What motivated us to create the Festival Kvarner? Actually, we did nothing new – we merely revived Opatija‘s 100-year-old tradition as a Gesamtkunstwerk! The Kvarner region‘s most interesting aspect was, and still is, that this holiday resort was not established by the Kvarner bay‘s inhabitants but „found“ by the guests themselves. Also in 2008: For years Michael Fendre and his team from the Ad libitum Konzertwerkstatt were looking for „the venue”, where music could build an extravagant symbiosis with the landscape and the climate to bring the audience a unique and unforgettable all-encompassing experience. It lasted seven years, until music and place had found each other and Opatija was able to present itself, like it had done already 100 years ago. Die Geschichte der Kamelie - Jan Bernd Urban, Schriftsteller, Privatgelehrter, Botaniker und ehemaliger Stadtrat von Opatija, zeichnet für das umfassend recherchierte Werk verantwortlich und lässt kaum eine Frage zur „Camellia Japonica“ an sich und ihrer gemeinsamen Geschichte mit Europa, insbesondere Opatija, offen.
Bela nedeja (Weißer Sonntag) ist ein drei-Tage-Fest, das jedes Jahr zur selben Zeit stattfindet, immer am ersten Samstag, Sonntag und Montag im Oktober. Der Sinn des Festes ist der junge Wein – dazu werden viele Kulturevents veranstaltet, es gibt Musik, Gesang & Spiel. Zum ersten Mal wird die Bela nedeja im Gesetz von Kastav im Jahr 1400 erwähnt. An dem verlängerten Wochenende können die Besucher die weit bekannte belica probieren, ein Weißwein der aus dieser Gegend stammt und nach dem das festival benannt wurde. Bela nedeja (White Sunday) is a three-day festival, which takes place every year at the same time - on the first Saturday, Sunday and Monday in October. The purpose of the festival is to celebrate the young wine with many cultural events, music, songs & plays. For the first time Bela nedeja is mentioned in the Law of Kastav in year 1400. During this long weekend, visitors can taste the most widely known belica, a white wine originating in that region - the festival was named after belica. It offers not only good young wine, but also old crafts, household products and ancients customs, and there is a variety of food and drinks expecting guests at street stalls and festival booths as far as the eye can reach...

Entstehung des Waldweges: Die Geschichte über einen König, der sich verirrte, und einen schlauen Bezirksvorsteher
B
ei seinem täglichen Ausritt verirrte sich der rumänische König Karl, der als Gast in der Villa Amalia verweilte, in einem Waldstück unterhalb von Veprinac (wahrscheinlich bei seinem ersten Aufenthalt in Opatija 1896). Wütend ging er am nächsten Morgen direkt zum Bezirksvorsteher, Baron Arthur von Schmidt-Zabiérow, und fragte ihn, warum die Wege nicht ordentlich gepflegt und markiert seien. Als sich der schlaue Zabiérow diskret beklagte, dass dafür einfach kein Geld da sei, legte Karl galant eine stolze Summe auf den Tisch, die zu diesem Zweck dienen sollte. Das Geld wurde gut verwendet: 1901 war der Waldweg fertig gestellt. Schmidt-Zabiérow, passionierter Schnepfen-, Gänsegeier- und Delphinjäger, wohnte in der Villa neben dem heutigen Rathaus (Villa Schmidt-Zabierow oder Brüll an der Adresse M. Tita 1), die für ihn von Karl Seidl entworfen wurde. Begraben wurde er im Familiengrab auf dem Friedhof Volosko zusammen mit seinem Vater, dem Landespräsident von Kärnten. Mala fortica und Königin Elisabeth Fels Karl Eitel Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1839-1914) wurde 1866 zum rumänischen Fürsten gewählt und 1881 zum König Carol I ernannt. Nach Opatija kam er zum ersten Mal im April 1896 und weilte in der Villa Angiolina zusammen mit seiner Ehefrau Elisabeth (1843-1916). Sie war Musikerin, Malerin und Schriftstellerin, die auch unter ihrem Pseudonym Carmen Sylva bekannt war. Bis zum Tode Karls im Jahre 1914 besuchte das

T
he Romanian king Carol, a guest at the Villa Amalia, once got lost during his daily horse ride in the woods somewhere beneath Veprinac (probably in 1896, on his first stay in Opatija). That made him quite furious, so next morning he went straight to the district principal, Baron Arthur von Schmidt-Zabiérow, and asked why the paths were not better maintained and marked. When the cunning Zabiérow confidentially explained that there just wasn’t the money, Carol gallantly produced a rather large amount necessary to deal with the matter. The money was well spent, and the construction of the forest path was completed in 1901. Schmidt-Zabiérow, a passionate snipe, griffon vulture and dolphin hunter, used to live in a property next to the present town hall, designed for him by Karl Seidl (Villa SchmidtZabierow or Brüll, at the address M. Tita 1). He was buried in a family tomb in the cemetery in Volosko, together with his father, head of the province of Carinthia. Mala Fortica and queen Elisabeth’s stone Karl Eitel Friedrich von Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen (1839-1914) was elected prince of Romania in 1866, and proclaimed king in 1881, when he took the name of Carol I. He first came to Opatija in April 1896 and stayed in the Villa Angiolina together with his wife Elisabeth (1843-1916), a musician, painter and writer, also known by her literary name of Carmen Sylva. The Romanian royal couple continued to visit Opatija regularly until Carol’s death in 1914. Elisabeth, by birth princess zu Wied (and a

rumänische Königspaar regelmäßig Opatija. Elisabeth, gebürtige Prinzessin zu Wied (befreundet war sie mit ihrer Namensschwester, der österreichischen Kaiserin Elisabeth), überlebte ihren Mann nur um zwei Jahre. In der österreichischen Epoche wurden zwei Spazierwege in Opatija nach dem rumänischen König benannt – der König-Carol-Waldweg und die König-Carol-Promenade. Nach dem Zweiten Weltkrieg wurde dem Waldweg der Name Zora nach der Gesellschaft und dem Gebäude verliehen, die von 1889 bis heute im sozialen und kulturellen Leben Opatijas eine wichtige Rolle spielten. Seit Ende des 20. Jahrhunderts trägt der Waldweg den Namen Carmen Sylva zur Erinnerung an die rumänische Königin und Ehefrau des Hauptsponsors, der sich um die Gestaltung des Waldweges verdient gemacht hatte. Der Aussichtspunkt auf dem Königin Elisabeth Fels ist heute volkstümlich als Mala Fortica bekannt. Die Tafel mit der Inschrift Carmen Sylva Ruhe befindet sich wiederum über der Steinbank unterhalb des Aussichtspunktes. In unmittelbarer Nähe gab es einmal wahrscheinlich auch die “Bank Goethes”, die jedoch nur noch in alten Reiseführern vorzufinden ist. Es ist nicht ausgeschlossen, dass sie auf einer kleinen Erhebung von Mala fortica aus hinter der ersten Kurve lag. Auf einem Fels erkennt man noch immer Spuren einer Tafel, auf der vielleicht einst Goethes Verse eingemeißelt waren: Wenn Dir’s im Kopf und Herzen schwirrt, Was willst Du Besseres haben! Wer nicht mehr liebt und nicht mehr irrt, Der lasse sich begraben.
Vela fortica und Opatija als Terrain-Curort In der Nähe der Siedlung Varljeni befindet sich auf einer Höhe von 180 Metern über dem Meeresspiegel die sogenannte “Vela fortica”, die auch unter den Namen Zorin vrh (Zora-Gipfel) oder Aurora-Höhe bekannt war. In unmittelbarer Nähe wurde 1904 ein Gasthaus eröffnet. Dank des bayerischen Arztes Max Joseph Örtel wurden die Waldwege in der Umgebung von Opatija präzis gemessen und mit Zeichen in zehnminütigen Abständen und Rastbänken versehen. Der König-Carol-Waldweg wurde in den Reiseführern als “Weg des I. und II. Schwierigkeitsklasse” bezeichnet. Das bedeutete, dass es entweder ebene Wege oder solche mit leichten Steigungen waren. Die gesamte Gehstrecke wurde auf ca. eineinhalb Stunden geschätzt. Max Joseph Örtel (1835-1897), Professor der inneren Medizin, Erfinder des Laryngostroboskops und Entdecker der Diphtherie-Sporen, weilte mehrmals in Opatija und veröffentlichte Werke, in denen er Opatija als “Terrain-Curort” etablierte.

During the Austrian era, two footpaths in Opatija were named after the Romanian king – these were the forest path König-Carol-Waldweg and the König-CarolPromenade. After World War Two, the forest path was renamed as Zora, after a local cultural society that has played a significant role in the social and cultural life of Opatija since 1889. At the end of the 20th century, the forest path was given the name of Carmen Sylva, Romanian queen and wife of the forest path’s main sponsor. The belvedere on Queen Elisabeth’s Rock (Königin Elisabeth Fels) is locally known as Mala fortica. However, the plaque with the inscription Carmen Sylva Ruhe can be found above a stone bench beneath the belvedere. It seems that somewhere in the immediate vicinity once existed “Goethe’s bench”, but today it can only be found in old guidebooks. Quite possibly it was located on a small elevation after the first curve past the Mala fortica. On a rock there, some marks are still visible of a plaque on which Goethe’s verses might once have been engraved: So your head and heart are buzzing? What do you want? He who no longer loves and no longer errs, should let himself be buried. Vela fortica and Opatija as field sanatorium The belvedere Vela fortica (also known as Zorin vrh or AuroraHöhe) was raised near the settlement of Varljeni at an elevation of 180 metres above sea level. And in 1904, an inn was opened in its immediate vicinity. Thanks to the Bavarian doctor Max Joseph Örtel, forest paths in Opatija were accurately measured and provided with signs marking out ten-minute-distances and rest areas with benches. Guidebooks of the time described the King Carol’s Forest Path as belonging to the “1st and 2nd difficulty class”, meaning that it is either level or slightly inclined. Covering the overall length was estimated to take roughly an hour and a half. Internal medicine professor Max Jospeh Örtel (1835-1897), inventor of the so-called laryngostroboscope who also discovered diphtheria spores, visited Opatija several times. In some of his published works, he established Opatija as a “terrain spa” (Terrain-Curort)

he Tomaševac Beach is partly sandy and partly concrete, located on the Lungo Mare promenade near the Ambassador Hotel in Opatija. A special feature of the beach is the fact that it is fully adapted for children and has plenty of room to play with a spacious playground with not only the pyramid for climbing, slides, swings, but also smaller football pitch. Parasols and deck chairs can be rented on the beach, and there is a coffee bar on the beach with food and drink.
