erzlich Willkommen zur Oktober Ausgabe von „Enjoy Opatija“! Der Herbst ist gekommen und trotzdem wird der Oktober wieder ein abwechslungsreicher Monat in unserer Region. Um Ihren Besuch zum Highlight werden zu lassen, haben wir wieder spezielle Tipps und Themen für Sie zusammengestellt Das traditionelle Maronenfest in Lovran und den Nebenorten ist auf jeden ein Besuch wert! Eine Vielfalt an Maronispezialitäten erwartet Sie auf den Festen sowie in einigen Restaurants (S. 4/5). Wer einen Besuch in die Natur machen möchte dann empfehlen wir den Naturpark Učka, im Oktober ist die beste Zeit für Spaziergänge (S.12/13). elcome to the October edition of “Enjoy Opatija”! Autumn is here and the October is full of various events. In order to have lots of highlights in your visit, we have special tips and topics made for you. The traditional chestnut festival in Lovran and its surroundings is definitely event worth a visit! In the “chestnut month” you can try great variety of chestnut specialties offered at the festivals and many restaurants (p 4/5). If you want to have some “nature time” we recommend the Nature Park Učka, October is the besttime for light walks through the woods(p.12/13). For all Nautic fans we have a lot from the Rijeka Nautical Show for you (p.6). In the “Kids Corner” (p. 14), we visited another playground for kids. There is also a colorful children’s program for this month. Read through our insider tips and take advantage of the numerous activities that Opatija area offers. I
m Mittelalter wird Lovran in den Chroniken als ein Ort der Seefahrer, Fischer und Obsthändler erwähnt. Die Einwohner von Lovran handelten hauptsächlich mit ihren bekannten Maronen aus den Obstgärten an den Hängen des Učka-Massivs. Die Lovraner Marone gehört neben der Marone aus Slowenien und der Marone Gentile de Torino aus Italien zu den besten europäischen Maronensorten. Während der österreich-ungarischen Monarchie war die Marone Ende des 19. Jh. und Anfang des 20 Jh. so gefragt, dass sie zu den Märken in Triest, Wien und München gefahren und dort verkauft wurde. Da diese Marone sehr hochwertig war und ausgezeichnet schmeckte, gab es nie Probleme mit dem Verkauf.
C
hronicles from the Middle Ages show that Lovran was a city of sailors, fishermen and fruit merchants. The people of Lovran mostly traded their renowned marron chestnuts that grew in the orchards of the Učka slopes. Lovran’s marrons, along with Slovenia’s Goricki and Italy’s Gentile de Torino are considered to be the highest quality species of chestnuts in Europe. During Austro-Hungarian reign, towards the end of the 19th and the beginning of the 20th centuries, these chestnuts were so much in demand that cartloads were supplied to markets in Trieste, Vienna and Munich. Because of their quality and great taste, the selling of these chestnuts was never a problem.

Das traditionelle Maronenfest, die Marunada ist die traditionelle kulinarische Veranstaltung, die einer speziellen Esskastaniensorte gewidmet ist: den Maronen von Lovran. Diese wachsen nur an den Hängen des Berges Učka und sind örtlich unter dem Namen „Maruni“ bekannt. Die Maronen von Lovran zeichnen sich durch ihren spezifischen süßen Geschmack aus und dienen als Hauptzutat interessanter Süßspeisen, die bei diesem Fest präsentiert werden. Abgesehen von Kuchen, Torten und Pfannkuchen, die man nur hier verkosten kann, bietet diese Veranstaltung, die von internationalen Medien als eines der zehn besten gastronomischen Feste Europas gelistet wurde, auch andere mit Maronen zubereitete Speisen zum Verkosten an, auch rohe oder geröstete Maronen. Ein Musikprogramm mit populären örtlichen Bands darf natürlich auch nicht fehlen.
The Marunada Festival is the traditional food festival dedicated to the special type of sweet chestnut that thrives only on the slopes of Mount Učka, and which is known locally as “marun” (hence the name of the event). The sweet chestnuts from Lovran are distinguished by their specific sweet taste and are used to create the interesting sweets presented at this festival. In addition to cakes and pancakes, which you will find only here and nowhere else, the Marunada, which was listed as one of the ten most important food festivals in Europe by international media, offers visitors a wide range of other dishes prepared with sweet chestnuts, as well as the opportunity to buy the fruit raw or roasted. The Marunada also includes a musical programme with popular local bands.

Der Naturpark UČKA DER BERG MIT DER SCHÖNSTEN AUSSICHT
N
ur eine halbe Autostunde von Opatija liegt ein wahres Juwel - der Naturpark Učka. Aufgrund seiner Lage, des Reliefs, der geologischen Struktur, des Klimas, der üppigen Waldvegetation, sowie der empfindlichen Arten in der Flora und Fauna stellt diese geschützte Bergregion eine Besonderheit dieses Teils von Istrien und Kvarner dar. Buchenwälder, große Wiesen, Klippen und Felsen sind die Heimat vieler Tierund Pflanzenarten, wie Bären und Wölfe, dann Vogelarten wie Steinadler und der größten europäische Eule, Orchideen und Schmetterlinge ... Der Naturpark Učka ist ein ideales Ziel für Outdoor-Aktivitäten. In nur wenigen Stunden können Sie über einen der vielen Wanderwege aus einem der malerischen Städtchen an der Riviera von Opatija auf die bewaldeten Hügel von Učka gelangen, bis Vojak, dem höchsten Gipfel auf 1.401 m. Neben den Wanderwegen stehen den Besuchern 8 Radwege zur Verfügung, die den gesamten Park durchqueren und Radfahrern die Gelegenheit bieten sich mit der natürlichen Landschaft vertraut zu machen und die saubere, frische Bergluft zu genießen. Ein unumgänglicher Ort ist das malerische Dorf Mala Učka, wo Sie den traditionellen Učka Schafkäse (ÖCO Siegel) kaufen können - das Rezept und die Produktion stammen aus dem alten Rom. Ein besonderes Erlebnis ist der Ethno-Gastro-Event, die Učka-Messe, immer am ersten Sonntag im September. In guter Atmosphäre können Sie kulinarische Köstlichkeiten, wie Schafskäse, hausgemachte Schnäpse und Weine, Schinken und andere traditionelle Spezialitäten der Region genießen.

UČKA Nature Park MOUNTAIN WITH THE MOST BEAUTIFUL VIEW
O
nly half an hour’s drive from Opatija lies a gem – the Učka Nature Park. This protected mountain region represents a specific feature of this part of Istria and Kvarner, due to its position, relief, geological structure, climate, lush forest vegetation, as well as delicate endemic species of flora and fauna. Beech forests, spacious grasslands, cliffs and rocks are home to many animal and plant species such as bears and wolves, bird species such as golden eagle and largest European owl, orchids, butterflies... Učka Nature Park is a great destination for outdoor activities. In just a few hours, one of the many hiking trails will lead you from the picturesque little towns on the Opatija Riviera over the forest-covered hills of Učka to Vojak, its highest peak at 1,401 m. From the lookout point there extends a full 360 degree panoramic view which will
leave you breathless: the Istrian Peninsula, the islands of the Northern Adriatic, the mountains of Gorski Kotar, Venice and the Alps. Within the borders of the park, there is a natural geomorphological monument – the Vela Draga canyon characterized by towering picturesque limestone columns and cliffs. There is an educational geological trail leading to this location. The canyon today is one of the most popular locations in Croatia for free climbers. Alongside the hiking trails visitors have at their disposal 8 cycling trails that cross the entire Park offering the cyclists a chance to acquaint themselves with the natural landscape and enjoy clean, fresh mountain air. An unmissable place to visit is the picturesque village of Mala Učka where you can buy traditional Učka sheep cheese (ECO labelled), the recipe and production of which date all the way to ancient Rome. The ethno-gastro event of the Učka Fair, held on the first Sunday in September, is a special experience. Here, besides the good vibrations, you can enjoy gastronomic delicacies such as sheep cheese, local brandies and wines, prosciutto and other traditional local specialities.

KIDS’ Corner Kinderfreundlicher Strand

er Strand Tomaševac ist sandig mit betonierten Liegeflächen und liegt an der Strandpromenade Lungo Mare in der Nähe des Hotel Ambasador in Opatija. Für Kinder und Jugendliche ist dieser Strand besonders geeignet, da es jede Menge Platz zum Spielen gibt und der weitläufige Spielplatz nicht nur eine Kletterpyramide, Rutschen und Schaukeln bietet, sondern auch einen Fußballplatz. Schirme und Liegen kann man sich am Strand ausleihen und es gibt auch ein Strandcafé mit Speisen und Getränken.

ollte es in Opatija einmal regnen, dann besuchen Sie mit ihren Kindern Opatijas ersten Indoor Spielplatz! Hier erwartet Sie und Ihre Kinder auf über 100 m² eine kunterbunte Fantasiewelt. Ein Wunderland für alle Kinder zwischen 1 und 12. Hier dürfen sie das tun, was ihnen am meisten Spaß macht: spielen, toben und laut sein. Nebenan befindet sich ein Bistro, in dem Sie bei einem Kaffee den wunderschönen Ausblick auf Opatija genießen können.

A wonderland for children from age 1 to 12 where they are allowed to do what makes them the happiest: drama, mess and noise. Family beach
T
he Tomaševac Beach is partly sandy and partly concrete, located on the Lungo Mare promenade near the Ambassador Hotel in Opatija. A special feature of the beach is the fact that it is fully adapted for children and has plenty of room to play with a spacious playground with not only the pyramid for climbing, slides, swings, but also smaller football pitch. Parasols and deck chairs can be rented on the beach, and there is a coffee bar on the beach with food and drink.
