erzlich Willkommen zur September Ausgabe von „Enjoy Opatija“! Auch der September wird ein abwechslungsreicher Monat in unserer Region. Um Ihren Besuch zum Highlight werden zu lassen, haben wir wieder spezielle Tipps und Themen für Sie zusammengestellt Die traditionelle Wien Woche und deren Highlight den Wien Ball sollten Sie auf keinen Fall verpassen. In dieser Woche kann man in vielen Hotels von Opatija Wiener Kaffee und Süßigkeiten genießen sowie am Wien Ball im Walzerrythmus tanzen (S. 4/5). Wer einen Besuch in die Natur machen möchte sollte auf jeden Fall die Messe auf der Učka besuchen (S. 6). elcome to the September edition of “Enjoy Opatija”! In this September edition, we prepared again a lot of various fun things and activities for you. In order to have lots of highlights in your visit, we have special tips and topics made for you. The traditional Vienna week and its highlight the Vienna Ball is event that you should not miss. The Ball is part of Vienna week, seven days when you can enjoy Viennese coffee and sweets in various hotels in Opatija and on the ball you can waltz the night off (p 4/5). If you are a nature lover then you should definitely visit the Učka (p.6) and its traditional fair. This year, around 40 exhibitors will participate and offer all kinds of homemade products like honey, feta cheese, truffle products, wine and many other of their natural products! In the “Kids Corner” (p. 14), we visited another beach for kids with a playground. There is also a colorful children’s program for this month. Read through our insider tips and take advantage of the numerous activities that Opatija area offers. We wish you a pleasant stay in the Riviera of Opatija with lots of variety. ien und Opatija, verbindet so vieles – es sind zwei angesehene europäische Städte, die schon über ein Jahrhundert lang eine innige Freundschaft pflegen, die sich in der Kultur, Geschichte, Gesellschaft und im Tourismus wiederspiegelt. Diese Verbundenheit besteht auch zwischen den Einwohnern; darum wollten wir diese wieder aufleben lassen und bedienten uns dessen als Grundlage für die Veranstaltung der Wien Woche in Opatija, bei der alle Kaffeehäuser typische Wiener Desserts, sowie die weitbekannte Sachertorte anbieten und die örtlichen Restaurants kulinarische Highlights nach traditionellen Rezepten zubereiten. Zum Veranstaltungsrahmen gehören auch Events mit Musik & Tanz, Kunstausstellungen und Workshops für Kinder – alles passend zum Thema Wien.
Dieses Jahr findet die Wien Woche bereits zum 6. Mal und der Wien Ball zum 9. Mal statt, was natürlich dafür spricht, dass die beiden Städte auch weiterhin eine enge Freundschaft pflegen. Der Höhepunkt der Wien Woche ist der Wien Ball, auf dem im Kristallsaal des Hotels Kvarner zahlreiche angesehene Gäste, Botschafter, Bürgermeister der Partnerstädte und Mitglieder der politischen und wirtschaftlichen Elite der Stadt Wien, sowie zahlreiche Unternehmer und Personen des öffentlichen Lebens aus Opatija zum Walzerrhythmus einen unvergesslichen Abend verbringen. Der Höhepunkt des Abends ist das Mitternachtsfeuerwerk, zu dem wie jedes Jahr eine meterlange Sachertorte von den Ehrengästen angeschnitten und an die Gäste verteilt wird. Verbringen auch Sie den Samstagabend am 24. September mit uns, seien Sie dabei beim Erlebnis der Superlative – zu Klängen der Wiener-Strauss Kapelle und einem Glas Sekt versüßen Sie sich auf der wunderschönen Terrasse des Hotels Kvarner unter dem bunt leuchtenden Nachthimmel den Abend…

ienna and Opatija are two distinguished European cities that have maintained for more than a century a close friendship, reflected in the culture, history, social scene and tourism. This bond also exists between their respective residents, which is why we wanted to revive it and use it as a basis for the organization of the Vienna Week in Opatija. This is a week when all coffee shops offer typical Viennese desserts, including the best known Sachertorte, and the local restaurants feature gastronomic attractions based on traditional recipes. Everything in that week follows the Vienna-theme: there will be events with music and dance, art exhibitions and workshops for children. This year the Vienna Week is organized for the 6th time and the Vienna Ball for the 9th time, which illustrates the fact that the two cities continue to maintain a close friendship. The highlight of the Vienna Week is the Vienna Ball, held in the Crystal Hall of the Kvarner Hotel, where many distinguished guests, diplomats, mayors of the twin cities and members of the political and economic elite of Vienna, as well as entrepreneurs and dignitaries from Opatija will dance to the rhythm of the waltz and spend an unforgettable evening. The crown of the evening is the midnight fireworks during which, like every year, a meter long Sachertorte will be cut by the guests of honour and distributed to the participants. We kindly invite you to spend the Saturday night on 24th September 2016 with us, be part of this outstanding experience – sweeten the evening with the sounds of the Wiener Strauss Kapelle and a glass of champagne on the beautiful terrace of the Kvarner Hotel under the brightly coloured night...

ie Messe Učka wurde im Jahr 2007 ins Leben gerufen und zum ersten Mal mit dem Ziel organisiert das Naturschutzgebiet des Naturparks Učka und sein kulturelles und ethnologisches Erbe durch die authentische Küche, traditionelle Speisen und Getränke, Kunsthandwerk , Musik und Traditionen zu fördern und den Menschen vor Ort zu ermöglichen ihre traditionellen Produkte, sowie ihr Handwerk, einem breiteren Publikum vorstellen und anbieten zu können. Die Veranstaltung Messe Učka hat sich zu einem alljährlichen Ereignis gemausert und in diesem Jahr findet es schon das 10. Jahr in Folge statt. Die Messe Učka vereint Ausstellung, Verkauf, Gastronomie, Bildungsinhalte und Unterhaltung. Da die bisherigen neun Messen sehr erfolgreich waren, mit etwa zehntausend Besuchern pro Jahr, ist es offensichtlich, dass ein gutes Konzept gefunden wurde. Auf der diesjährigen Messe werden rund 40 Aussteller teilnehmen und ihre Produkte wie Honig, Schafskäse, Trüffelprodukte, Wein, viele Schnapssorten, geräucherten Schinken, hausgemachte Marmeladen, Sirup, Kuchen, Teegebäck, Produkte hergestellt aus Heilkräutern, hausgemachte Salami, Fleischprodukte, Naturkosmetik, Obst & Gemüse von Bauerhöfen in der Nähe und vieles mehr anbieten. Im Ausstellungsbereich werden Besucher altes Werkzeug, Instrumente und Geschirr begutachten können – Teil der ethnologischen Sammlung und zugleich Präsentation des Kunsthandwerks wie eine Töpferscheibe, eine alte Schmiede und Herstellung von Holzfässern, dann traditionelle Musikinstrumente und deren Herstellung und verschiedene auf dem Berg Učka und der Gegend Ćićarija wachsende Pilze. Wie auch in den Vorjahren wird auch dieses Mal den Besuchern eine Nutztierausstellung geboten, wo man ganz aus der Nähe Haustiere bestaunen kann, die einst lebensnotwendig waren und ihren Ursprung gerade hier haben; das ist das strische Rind Boškarin, dann die istrische Schafsrasse Pramenka, die heimische Kuh, der istrische Esel und eine Ziege. Auch dieses Jahr gibt es bei der Messe Kinderprogramm, Vorträge, einschließlich Entspannungs-Workshops, dann etwas über die Herstellung von Naturkosmetik und Kochen mit Rohkost. Während der ganzen Messe gibt es Fun & Musik, Akkordeonspieler des Kulturvereins „Tinta 910“ sorgen für gute Laune, sowie die Gruppen „Šćike“ und „Zastoj“ mit ihren Tanzeinlagen. Natürlich darf es nicht an gutem Essen fehlen – dafür sorgen die ansässigen Gastwirte, die ihr kulinarisches Können zum Besten geben und für die Gäste Hausgemachtes zubereiten, wie Minestrone, Kohl, Würstchen, Jagdkessel und vieles mehr zu erschwinglichen Preisen.

čka Fair was organized for the first time in 2007 with the aim to promote the protected area of the Učka Nature Park and its cultural and ethnological heritage through authentic cuisine, traditional food and drinks, handcrafts, music and traditions, and enable local people to offer their traditional products and demonstrate their crafts to a wider audience. The event Učka Fair has grown into a traditional event, and this year it will take place for the 10th year in a row. Učka Fair brings together exhibition, sales, gastronomy, educational content and entertainment. Since the previous nine fairs have been very successful, with around ten thousand visitors every year, it is obvious that a good concept has been found. At this year’s fair about 40 exhibitors will participate offering products in a broad range including honey, sheep cheese, truffle products, wine and schnapps of various kinds, smoked ham, home-made jams and syrups, pastries and tea biscuits, herbal products, home-made salami and meat products, natural cosmetics, local fruits and vegetables, agricultural products and much more… In the exhibition area guests will be able to examine traditional tools, instruments and dishes – part of the ethnological collection, a demonstration of traditional crafts such as pottery wheel, an antique blacksmith shop and the production of wooden barrels, traditional musical instruments and their production, as well as an exhibition of various mushrooms from the area of Učka and Ćićarija. As in previous years, space will be provided for animals where visitors will be able to see authentic domestic animals traditionally important for this area - autochthonous Istrian cattle - Boškarin, the autochthonous breed of Istrian sheep – pramenka, domestic cow, Istrian donkey and a goat. Like the previous years, this year also presentations will be held especially for children, following which the programme will continue with the educational part of the festival including workshops on relaxation, production of natural cosmetics and raw food cooking. The backdrop to the entire fair will be a variety of cultural and entertainment events including accordion players and the Association for the Promotion of Cultural Creativity Tinta 910, as well as the dancing session bands Šćike and Zastoj. Gastronomic offer will be based exclusively on home-made food (minestrone, cabbage, sausages, hunting kettle, etc.) at accessible prices.

ie Geschichte des Parks Angiolina stammt aus der Feder des Leiters der Wiener kaiserlich-königlichen Gesellschaft für Parkanlagen, Carl Schubert. Er führt an, der ältere Teil des Parks sei in der Zeit von 1845 bis 1860 mit verschiedener autochthoner und exotischer Flora bepflanzt worden. Als 1882 der Park in den Besitz der Gesellschaft der Südeisenbahn kam, gab Schubert dessen Erweiterung und Umgestaltung einen Sinn. Der Bereich vor der Villa war früher, wie heute, im Biedermeier-Stil gestaltet, mit verschiedenartigen Blumenbeeten auf relativ kleinem Raum, während der Großteil des Parks dem romantischen Konzept eines landschaftlichen Parks im Kleinen entspricht, mit Staffage-Gebäuden, wie das Schweizer Haus, der Musikpavillon und der hölzerne Kaiserpavillon, der um das Jahr 1950 oder etwas früher abgerissen wurde, eingefügt in das mit Sorgfalt gestaltete Naturambiente. Unbearbeitete Kalksteine unter den Bäumen aus der Bergwildnis Kaukasiens und Kaliforniens (die kaukasische Tanne und die immergrüne kalifornische Sequoia Gigantea) sind harmonisch mit Magnolien zusammengewachsen, Walddattel- und Bananenpalmen blühen auch dazwischen. Die bedeutendsten Sehenswürdigkeiten des Parks sind die Kameliensträuche, wahre blühende Schönheiten der uns fernen Philippinen, die zum Symbol Opatijas geworden sind.
T
he history of the park can be traced to the time of the director of Vienna’s Imperial – Royal Society for Park Constructions, Carl Schubert. He was responsible for the planting of domestic and exotic flora in the old part of the park between 1845 and 1860. In 1882, when the Society of Southern Railways came into the possession of the park, Carl Schubert enlarged and reshaped it. The area in front of the Villa was in Biedermaier style with a small meadow covered with a variety of flowers. The larger part of the park had a romantic concept of park scenery with decorated establishments like the Swiss House, the Music Pavilion and the wooden Emperor’s House (which was removed in 1950s) and everything fitted the concept of designed environment inside the „raw nature“. The rude limestone rocks under the exotic trees from the Caucasus wilderness and California (Caucasus pinewood and evergreen mammoth) mix together with the Magnolia tree, dates and bananas. The special park attraction is Camelia, the beauty from the Philippines, which became the symbol of Opatija.

Villa Angiolina D
er Bau dieser Villa bedeutete damals zugleich den Beginn des Fremdenverkehrs in Opatija - eigentlich handelt es sich um den Umbau eines älteren Gebäudes, damals im Besitz des Barons Haller von Hallerstein. Zu der Zeit war Opatija eine relativ große Siedlung mit etwa 120 Häusern, die eher auf den von der Meeresküste entfernteren Grundstücken gebaut waren und deren Einwohner hauptsächlich vom Fischfang und der Seefahrt lebten. Als dann der Patrizier Iginio Scarpa aus Rijeka nach Opatija zog und seine Sommerresidenz die Villa Angiolina errichtete, die ihren Namen nach seiner damals bereits verstorbenen Ehefrau erhielt, die aus der Familie Sartori stammte, öffnete Opatija ihre Türen für viele Gäste und Reisende. Unter den Besuchern waren auch die österreichische Kaiserin Maria Anna, der Botaniker Heinrich Noë, der kroatische Ban Josip Jelačić und andere, die, begeistert von der Pflanzenwelt und dem Klima, den Ruhm Opatijas verbreiteten und so den Grundstein für das künftige Heilbad legten. Nach Scarpa und seinem Sohn Paolo, der bereits 1869 mit dem Gedanken spielte ein Sanatorium zu gründen, wechselte die Villa ihre Besitzer. Zuerst erwarb sie der mährische Adelige Chorinsky, dann die Südbeisenbahn (zu der Zeit waren auch das Thronfolgerpaar Rudolf und Stefanie, sowie deren Gast, der steierische Satiriker Rosegger in der Villa untergebracht), die internationale Schlafwagengesellschaft, die Kurkommission und andere. Wie sehr der Preis der Villa mit der Zeit anstieg, geht daraus hervor, dass Iginio Scarpa einst das ganze Terrain für siebenhundert Gulden kaufte und 1910 dieselbe Villa mit der im Park blühender exotischen Flora für 2,5 Millionen Kronen weiterverkauft wurde. Zuzeiten Scarpas war dies ein Treffpunkt der feinsten Gesellschaftskreise, wo im Sommer Feste auf der Terrasse gefeiert wurden. Gegen Ende der österreichischen Macht war sie der Sitz der Kurkommission, samt dem Musikpavillion und der belebten Promenade vor der Südfassade. Heute steht die Villa immer noch und bald wird sie das neue Stadtmuseum Opatijas in ihren Sälen willkommen heißen.

his is the building that certainly marked the beginning of the tourist epoch in the history of Opatija. Before the villa was constructed in 1844 (actually a reconstruction of an older building owned by baron Haller von Hallerxtein) Opatija was a settlement of about 120 houses, clustered mainly around plots removed from the sea coast and chiefly oriented towards fishing and seafaring. With the arrival of Iginio Scarpa, a partician from Rijeka, and building of his summer house Angiolina (named after Scarpa’s then already deceased wife, originating from the Sartori family), Opatija opened her doors to a whole line of guests and passengers, among whom it is noteworthy to mention the Austrian empress Mary Ann, the botanist Heinrich Noë, the Croatian governor Josip Jelačić and others who in their enthusiasm for the local vegetation and climate spread the fame about Opatija and thus prepared the ground for the future health resort. After Scarpa and his son Paolo, who entertained of the idea of establishment a sanatorium as early as 1869, the villa was owned by the Moravian nobleman Chorinsky, the Southern Railways Company (during their ownership the villa accommodated the heirs-to-the-throne couple Rudolf and Stephanie and their guest, the Styrian satirist Rosegger), the International Wagon-lit Society, the Health Resort Commission, and others. As the market value of the villa rose and taking into account that Iginio Scarpa purchased the entire grounds at the price of 700 florins, in 1919 the villa with the surrounding park full of exotic plants was sold for 2.5 million crowns. In Scarpa’s time the meeting-place of Rijeka’s top class, thereafter the site of summertime entertainment on its terraces, during the end of the Austrian period of the seat of the Health Resort Commission with an orchestral pavilion and lively promenade in front of its southern facade , today the villa accommodates the headquarters of the Croatian Museum of Tourism.

Family beach
T
he Tomaševac Beach is partly sandy and partly concrete, located on the Lungo Mare promenade near the Ambassador Hotel in Opatija. A special feature of the beach is the fact that it is fully adapted for children and has plenty of room to play with a spacious playground with not only the pyramid for climbing, slides, swings, but also smaller football pitch. Parasols and deck chairs can be rented on the beach, and there is a coffee bar on the beach with food and drink.
