Measuring Air Quality Many Local Government Councils and the Australian EPA continuously record environmental air quality typically with a DustTrak measuring device. These machines record particle aerodynamic diameter, both as a PM2.5 and PM10 measurement, as well as total suspended particulate matter (TSP). This is a measure of the concentration of 2.5 micron and 10 micron sized particles in the air. PM2.5 particles can enter the lungs and bloodstream and are therefore of most concern for human health. Of course fine airborne particles come from a range of sources including mining, diesel fuel emissions, road dust, bush fires, agricultural wind erosion, and also wood heater smoke.
What's With the Firebrick? Placing SmartBurn on a small firebrick provides a stable level base and distances it from being disturbed by moving logs. Principally this elevates the tube out of the ash bed, allowing the active vapours to be released from the ends of the tube without being buried in ash. Small Firebricks that are just the right size to support your SmartBurn are available directly from SmartBurn, or as a spare part from reseller stores of new wood heaters. We don’t recommend to use a house or paving brick within your wood heater, since they are not kilned to as high a temperature to remove moisture creating an explosion risk.
