GSSGC would like to welcome everyone to a new year of Girl Scouting.

As troops begin to form and volunteers begin to settle into their roles, we know that you may have many questions. Use this Fall magazine and the cookie edition magazine as references throughout the year. Food for Thought has dates to remember and contact information for staff members. By reading through the articles, you may find that some of your questions have been answered.

The theme for our 2024-2025 entrepreneurial program year is Embrace Possibility, which is fitting as this is a theme throughout Girl Scouts. Here at GSSGC, our goal is to cultivate every Girl Scout’s potential and success. Every girl, parent, volunteer, and staff member adds to the possibilities that can be achieved. When Girl Scouts and troops participate in our Entrepreneurial Product Program, they embrace the possibility and gain the full Girl Scout experience and learn how to set goals, build budgets, and communicate effectively. This is not just a theme, it is the Girl Scout way. We hope that you will embrace the new Girl Scout year fully. We are excited about the year ahead and thrilled that you are joining us on the journey.

I am thrilled to welcome both returning and new members as we prepare for another exciting Girl Scout year and entrepreneurial program. This year's journey is guided by our inspiring motto: "Embrace Possibility." Together, we will explore, learn, grow, and create unforgettable memories. We will challenge ourselves to try new things, develop new skills, and make a positive impact in our community. Each experience will be a chance to step out of our comfort zones and embrace the unknown with courage and curiosity. As always, we encourage every Girl Scout to think big, dream boldly, and be open to the endless possibilities that lie ahead.

Leaders, parents and guardians, your support is invaluable to your Girl Scout’s success. We look forward to partnering with you to create a fun, safe, and enriching environment for our Girl Scouts to thrive. Your involvement, whether through volunteering or simply cheering us on, makes all the difference. Together, we'll embrace the possibilities and make this a year to remember!

Yours in Girl Scouting,

We look forward to the 2025 Girl Scout Membership Year!

In Girl Scouts, you have lots of fun and build lifelong friendships. You also find your own unique power by selling Fall Product and, in just a few months, Girl Scout Cookies.

By participating in both the Fall Product and Girl Scout Cookie Programs, you run your own businesses and learn to set goals, build a budget, make projections, learn business ethics, and gain the skills to engage new people. That’s also where you strengthen your character and resiliency, because there will be challenges. I know that you will meet and overcome every single one because you are Girl Scout strong!

94-year-old Dolores Huerta, co-founder of the United Farm Workers Association, was a Girl Scout and says that being a Girl Scout helped her change from being a shy little girl to finding the courage to speak up for what she believes in.

I thrived as a Girl Scout and, just like Ms. Huerta, went from being a shy girl to finding my own voice. Your confidence will grow and blossom during the sale. Plus, you will have the thrill of earning your very own incentives.

This is such an exciting time of year because you are heading into the Fall Product Program with a lineup of fantastic rewards you can earn. I encourage you all to participate because the valuable experiences you will have and the skills you will gain will set you up for great success with your sale and throughout your life.

Yours in Girl Scouting,

Empower Your Troop & Make Next Year Unforgettable!

Here’s how participating in the Fall Product Program can help your troop:

Camp

Help your troop experience the magic of Girl Scout camps like regional day camp, Camp Wi-Wo-Ca, or Camp Skyland Ranch. Whether it’s a weekend getaway or a week in the great outdoors, the memories made at camp last a lifetime.

School Packages

Ensure your troop members don’t miss out on important school experiences. Funds can be used for yearbooks, school dance tickets, letterman jackets, music lessons, clubs, sports fees, and more, allowing girls to fully participate in their school communities.

Programs

From badge workshops to regional events, environmental education, and STEM activities, your sales directly fund the programs that help our girls develop important skills and explore new interests.

Travel

Whether it’s an international adventure or a local weekend getaway, your participation in the Fall Product Sales helps open doors to new experiences and broaden horizons for your troop.

Uniforms

Support your Girl Scouts in wearing their uniforms with pride! Funds raised can be used for vests, sashes, insignias, and other essential pieces that symbolize their commitment to the Girl Scout Promise.

Why Sell in the Fall?

Selling nuts and magazines in the fall is more than just a fundraiser—it’s an opportunity to kickstart a year filled with exciting activities, learning experiences, and personal growth.

By participating in the Fall Product Program, you’re laying the groundwork for a year filled with possibilities. Your support ensures that your troop has the resources they need to embark on incredible journeys, both within Girl Scouts and beyond.

• Partner your existing troop with a brand-new troop to help them learn the Girl Scout way!

• Build an “Affinity” group that gathers troops with similar interests for some common experiences!

• Girl Scouts Ambassadors you can help too! By helping lead a new Daisy troop and/or share your Girl Scout experience!

You don’t have to mentor alone! We are here to help you with guidance and ideas! Email awards@gssgc.org.

D.E.I. Diversity, Equity & Inclusion

The GSSGC Team is working to better the experiences of our girls with disabilities while they attend and participate in program experiences. Last year we received a grant to help us launch a program to improve our ability to include these members. With this grant we were able to purchase equipment to assist with archery at Skyland Ranch, develop trainings for our girls to help build awareness, and put on events to bring some of our Girl Scouts with disabilities together to meet the girls who had completed the trainings. Moving forward we have developed a training for older Girl Scouts who are interested in learning how to be an aide to their fellow Girl Scouts with disabilities to support them at events they cannot attend alone. If you are interested, consider participating in one or more of the trainings or opportunities below. Find the dates on the GSSGC Calendar or invite us to a troop meeting.

DEIRJ Workgroup

If you are interested in participating in GSSGC's Diversity, Equity, Inclusion, & Racial Justice (DEIRJ) work, email customercare@gssgc.org with the subject "DEIRJ Workgroup" and how you would like to help.

Older girls will be trained to support girls as a person who shadows them at an event to support their participation at program experiences.

Request 1:1 Support

We know there are Girl Scout troops in our Council that need a 1:1 when they participate in camp experiences, and we have donors that contributed to a fund to help support troops cover the additional cost for the extra adult to attend. We are developing the process to provide these funds to troops. If you are a troop that could use these funds, please reach out to us at programcoordinator@gssgc.org so we can discuss the process for submitting a request.

Troop Activities and Travel

As your troop plans your Girl Scout year you will undoubtedly want to add some activities and travel that may require some extra legwork and approval from Council. We have provided information on GSSGC’s website to assist you as you plan. Information for all activities can be found in the Forms section on www.gssgc.org.

Activity Approval Process

Safety Activity Checkpoints is a guide that helps troops think through the safety concerns of any and all activities they might be interested in throughout the year. It has guidance and safety requirements for anything from adventure sports to using the internet and includes whether Council approval is needed or not. Our Girl Scout insurance determines which activities require approval as well as which activities are allowed for each Girl Scout level. The full Safety Activity Checkpoints document can be a very informative and useful tool for troops as they plan their year. Our online Activity Approval Process document can be used as a quick look at the list of activities that do and do not require approval before digging into the checkpoints. The checkpoints are updated regularly by GSUSA to add activities or update their guidance on specific activities.

Some examples of activities that require approval are horseback riding, rock climbing, swimming, and overnights longer than 24 hours, just to name a few. See the complete list in the Activity Approval Process in the Forms section online.

Extended Travel Planning

Extended trips are intended to be girl-planned, girl-led, and girl-learning experiences that are more than two (2) nights and/or more than 700 miles round-trip or any place outside the continental United States. Extended trips are limited to Bridging Junior, Cadette, Senior, and Ambassador Girl Scouts. We’ve recently developed Extended Travel Planning, an online document that walks your troop through the steps of planning extended travel. It includes a checklist of requirements for forms, training, and Council approvals, and links to trip planning tools created by GSUSA and GSSGC that help girls and their leaders think through all of the steps and details for both domestic and international travel as a troop or travel group.

Troop, Regional, or Service Unit-Hosted Events

Do you or your troop want to plan an event or camp for other Girl Scouts to attend? Do you feel passionate about a topic or a Girl Scout badge that you want share with other Girl Scouts? Maybe you’re an older girl troop that is interested in raising money for something like travel or a Take Action project? Girl Scout leaders and parents are always looking for events for their Girl Scouts to participate in that deliver on the Girl Scout experience. Help them by hosting an event. Individual adults, teams of adults, and troops can host events as part of their region or service unit. Troops that are eligible can host events as a Money Earning Activity (MEA), if approved. Talk to your Region or Service Unit Event Chair for training and help in completing the Intent to Event Application.

You can add your troop to the Participation Catalog— our online listing of troops with open spots for youth or volunteers. The Participation Catalog helps families search for troops with open spaces by zip code. It also allows adults to see volunteer opportunities in their area and sign up to help.

Note: Filling out the form does not automatically update your information in our system. All information that is provided is updated manually by a staff member. If you have an urgent request, please contact our Customer Care Team.

I Grew My Troop!

Earn the exclusive glow-in-the-dark patch for troop members and two troop volunteers by completing two easy tasks:

1. Add two new Girl Scout members to your troop between 8/1/24–1/6/25.

2. Complete the Glow My Troop form (scan below).

Note: This promotion is for adding brand-new youth members to Girl Scouts. This does not include a girl transferred from another troop. YOU MUST COMPLETE THE FORM TO GET THE PATCH.

Recruit a New Troop Program!

If you successfully recruit two people to form and officially start a new troop between August 1, 2024 and January 6, 2025, your troop will have the exciting opportunity to join us for a free fun-themed weekend at Camp Skyland Ranch.

What does it take to start a new troop?

• Two non-related adults register as troop leaders.

• Two troop leaders complete background checks and Live Scan fingerprinting.

• Five girls register into the troop.

• Two troop leaders complete online leader training.

• The new troop leaders receive a welcome email.

What's Next?

Once the steps are completed, please complete the form so we can verify the new troop has formed. Please contact Customer Care if you have any questions.

*You must complete the form to qualify. Scan the QR code to access the form.

Explore Girl Scouts

It's easy to find inspiring events for all ages and there’s no need to already be part of a troop to start exploring. Whether you want to gain new skills, make new friends, or simply try something new, you’re in the right place.

Make sure you check out our events page for upcoming camps and events put on by Council and volunteers. Scan the QR code below.

Mandated Reporter Training & Live Scan Fingerprinting

We have recently updated our Mandated Reporter Training process.

In response to changes regarding charges for training certificates, GSUSA developed a no-cost course. It is crucial that all our volunteers who have not previously completed training comply by the upcoming deadline of January 1, 2025 to maintain their participation in Girl Scouts. If you have completed training you do not need to take the new training.

Please take the time to complete these requirements for the safety of our girls! Live Scan Fingerprinting and training are not optional.

Mandated Reporter Training - Two Ways to Access the Training

Become a Girl Scouts Trainer!

Are you passionate about the outdoors or leadership development? Do you have tips and tricks from years of Girl Scouting that you want to share with other leaders?

If this sounds like you—and you’re ready for a new challenge with Girl Scouts—consider becoming a trainer. Trainers collaborate with staff and other trainers to deliver training that supports the next generation of leaders and adult volunteers who help build girls of courage, confidence, and character.

What you'll do: Empower adults who work with girls to deliver quality programs.

What you'll get: You'll have the opportunity to develop strong facilitation, speaking, organizational, and management skills, and gain pride in knowing that without your help, our troop leaders wouldn't have the skills they need to empower the leaders of tomorrow.

Please email customercare@gssgc.org if you're interested in becoming a trainer.

It’s Recognitions Nomination Time

VOLUNTEERS ARE THE HEARTS AND HANDS OF GIRL SCOUTS IN OUR COUNCIL, and we take pride in recognizing our members for their commitment, volunteer service, and exceptional contributions. The continued celebration of service depends on you to nominate adult Girl Scout volunteers in your communities.

Who do you know that goes above and beyond to make the world a better place?

Who do you know that embodies the Girl Scout Promise and Law?

Who do you see building the Girl Scout community?

Who do you see building girls of courage, confidence, and character?

Who shows care and nurture for their troop, region, and our Council?

Nominations for Membership Year 2024 opened on August 1, 2024 and close on December 1, 2024. Please fill out the nomination form and let’s celebrate our amazing volunteers together!

Remember, nominations submitted are for the 2024 Membership Year–covering services provided from October 1, 2023 through September 30, 2024. Any mention of services for Membership Year 2025 will be discarded, and the nomination marked null and void. Questions should be sent to awards@gssgc.org.

Camp Skyland Ranch

Camp Skyland Ranch is growing! This year we had a grand opening for our new expanded restrooms, allowing Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio (GSSGC) to continue serving schools at an increased capacity during the school year and summer. Our Council also received appropriations for government funding thanks to the support of Congressman Pete Aguilar. With new funding secured for Skyland Ranch we are planning to move forward with some muchneeded updates and capital improvements. This is in addition to the work that has been accomplished thanks to gracious funders, the nonprofit Learn4Life, and the California Conservation Corps. This combined support has resulted in new horse tack sheds, a growing yurt village, and overall forest and trail rehabilitation.

The California Conservation Corps has also assisted us in preserving Camp Wi-Wo-Ca and Azalea Trails. We recently hosted a work party at Azaela Trails alongside involved volunteers and alumni who helped prepare the camp for troops. Many individuals, corporations, and foundations have chosen to contribute to our camps to help provide a safe, educational, and fun experience for girls in our community. We invite you to join us in our goal of preserving the gift of camp for generations to come. Please go to www.gssgc. org/donate and make a gift today!

To discuss major gift and naming opportunities, email Jernine McBride at jmcbride@gssgc.org or call her at 909-534-2473.

Before Girl Scouts sail around the world or design their own fashion line, they need to believe they can do it.

Invest in our local Girl Scouts and make those dreams a reality. Then watch as they discover new interests and chase their dreams—with the pride of knowing you helped make it possible.

Your gift will be used to ensure local Girl Scouts gain the skills and confidence needed to accept challenges, overcome obstacles, and become leaders. Plus, every dollar you give stays right here in our community!

Thank you for all you do for the girls in our communities.
