ALL OF OUR AMAZING, FABULOUS GIRL SCOUT FAMILIES!

WELCOME

I am Jua-Nita Williams Houston, our Council’s Chief of Mission Delivery. I have learned and lived this program right alongside each of you for the last 12 years. I have watched many of you come into this program as Daisies and grow into beautiful, phenomenal, amazing young ladies and fabulous entrepreneurs. As we move forward please allow me to reflect on a few things. We know the last 15+ months have been incredibly difficult. Life as we knew it literally changed overnight. We said goodbye to what we once knew as normal and learned to embrace change, change and more change. Through it all, this Council, our members and our programs have weathered the pandemic. We kept looking and moving forward. We added some new skills to our repertoire and rolled with the punches and we came out on top. From an all-digital Fall Product Program to virtual programming and camps, virtual troop meetings, and a mostly digital online cookie sale, our girls worked harder than ever before, knocked their goals out of the

park, and learned so many new things along the way. To say we are so proud of you would be an understatement. As a Council we stand in awe of all that you have accomplished during these difficult times. We know it wasn’t easy, but each of you persevered and handled the changes and challenges like pros.

As we enter this new season and move forward with the new way of doing things I want you to take a few things with you: Always believe in yourself, you are stronger than you know!

Always keep moving forward, even when there is struggle.

Always keep reaching for your goals, when you accomplish one, set another–that’s how success is built.

Always take care of yourself first–mind, body and soul. Take time to smell the roses, put your face to the sun and of course EAT THE COOKIES!

BACK GIRL SCOUTS! As we enter a new year of Girl Scouting and entrepreneurial program, I challenge you to reflect back on the past year and recognize how adaptable we all really are. That is an important realization because change is inevitable and sometimes it happens really fast! The new skills we learned and used during the pandemic will not be retired, but continue to evolve as we fine-tune the right balance between virtual and in-person interactions. It is so exciting to finally be able to see real people and their faces again, but we can’t deny how awesome and convenient things like curbside pick-up are. Ultimately, expectations and priorities have been permanently shifted.

So as we step back out into the world and our community, we need to be prepared to learn how to interact with each other again. I know as Girl Scouts we will continue to set a positive example and personify our core values. We will all need a little bit of patience and a lot of kindness to recover from over a year of contactless everything.

This year’s 2021 Fall Product Program provides girls with an opportunity to “Rise Up” while learning more about entrepreneurship.

Why Participate in the Fall Product Program?

Girls learn and practice the Five Skills: Goal Setting, Decision Making, Money Management, People Skills and Business Ethics, as they earn proceeds for their troops, not to mention exciting rewards.

Proceeds earned stay local to benefit the Council and Troops who can earn 15-30% on all items sold: nuts, chocolates, magazines and thank you nuts (I Care). The Fall Product Program is an excellent way for Troops to earn start-up proceeds to use during the Girl Scout year to fund activities, projects and beyond!

How the Fall Product Program Works: This program allows girls to be entrepreneurs by offering family and friends the opportunity to purchase delicious nuts, chocolates and magazines. There are multiple ways to participate: ⇨ In-person by taking orders using the paper order card and collecting payment ⇨ Online by inviting friends and family to place an order using her unique codes or through email invitation. Customers can choose to have nuts, chocolates and magazines shipped directly to

In this world and our current situation of facing the unknown, the easiest thing to do is Be Kind, be a good person, and accept and embrace all the differences and commonalities of your Girl Scout Sisters.

Together we will continue to rise above the pandemic and, while we will never return to the normal we knew, we can create a new normal that is safe, just, equal and equitable for all members. We are so looking forward to our continued growth and success and can’t wait for the new year of adventures to begin, come and join us, we’re waiting for you.

Fun Facts about our Fall Program mascot the Emperor Penguin: ⇨ They are the largest of all living penguin species and breed annually during the Antarctic winter, June through August.

During this time, temperatures can drop as low as -76°F with winds as high as 124 mph. ⇨ They can dive to a depth of 1,800 feet and hold their breath for up to 22 minutes! Their aerodynamic bodies and strong flippers make them excellent swimmers, reaching speeds of 7.65 mph. ⇨ Colonies of adults and chicks work together to huddle for warmth. 5,000 or more tightly packed adults and chicks shuffle around, so each takes a turn on the outside of the huddle where it’s cold.

What do the terms in DEI mean? What do they mean in the context of Girl Scouting?

Diversity is about difference. A group has diversity when the people present (e.g., our organization’s girl members, volunteers, staff ) reflect differences across socioeconomic status, race, ethnicity, physical ability, gender, sexual orientation, age, education, religion, political beliefs, and so on. Different groups reflect different forms and degrees of diversity—and the Girl Scout Constitution calls for our membership to reflect the pluralistic nature of our communities.

Girl Scouts Stands Against Racism and Pledges to Work for a Just Society for All 2

Equity is about seeking to give everyone access to the same opportunities while acknowledging that we don’t all start from the same place. Through equitable practices, people are given the support they need to have an experience (e.g., participate in Girl Scouts).

Tackling this part of the work requires that we understand the underlying causes of disparities in, for example, health, educational, and employment outcomes among different demographics.

When inclusion is happening, people who are present feel a sense of belonging (e.g., have a voice, hold leadership positions, feel Girl Scouts is for them).

In the words of inclusion strategist, social commentator, author, and Netflix’s VP of inclusion strategy Vernā Myers, “Diversity is being asked to the party; inclusion is being asked to dance.” While a truly inclusive group is necessarily diverse, a diverse group may or may not be inclusive.

Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion–Upcoming Training Sessions for Volunteers!

Mark your calendars for the first in a four-part training series for volunteers on Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion (DEI). Equity Consultant Nicole Anderson will facilitate the sessions, sharing an introduction to this work while exploring the definitions of Diversity, Equity, and Inclusion and how to implement them to better serve our girls and surrounding community.

All sessions will be held online from 10am-12pm via Zoom. The first session is scheduled on Saturday, September 18, 2021. The next three session dates will be announced soon so keep watch in our monthly newsletter and on the Event Calendar.

WELCOME

BACK, GIRL SCOUTS! We are excited that you have signed up for another year of Girl Scouting.

This past year and a half has shown us all how resilient we can be and how we can adapt to challenges that arise. As we resume in-person meetings, events and activities, our purpose as Girl Scouts is renewed and amplified. We are reminded of the joy of being with other girls, trying something new for the first time, discovering and participating in activities we may not have considered before, and working toward a new goal each year--whether a badge, Journey, earning our highest awards, or bridging to the next Girl Scout level.

Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council is prepared to ensure your journey is one that results in good times and lifelong memories and friendships. We are here to support the formation of new troops, which help build a unique Girl Scout sisterhood. We are here to help our Girl Scouts, troop leaders, and volunteers experience their best year yet.

I want to recognize the girls, volunteers, and families who displayed true character and Girl Scout spirit over this past year and a half, and express my appreciation for your dedication and perseverance. Throughout it all, you have been an inspiration and a light to the communities we serve.

During this year’s Cookie Program--one unlike any other-volunteers and families literally went the extra mile, or sometimes many miles, to make personal Girl Scout Cookie deliveries to the doorsteps of their customers to help girls succeed and earn the opportunities that only a cookie can bring.

As they do every year, our Gold Award Girl Scouts inspire us with the projects they implement in their communities to bring about lasting and meaningful change. Our Girl Scouts met the challenges the pandemic presented to earn their Gold Awards.

They showed us that courage comes from within and we hope their example inspires more girls in the coming year to follow in their footsteps.

As a Council, we will continue to work hard to ensure the Girl Scout experience is all that it can be. We will uphold our promise to foster an environment for our girls, families, volunteers, stakeholders, vendors and staff that is welcoming, inviting and inclusive. Our priorities have not changed: to see the girls in our Council and in our community shine, achieve all of their goals and, through Girl Scouts, gain the courage, confidence, and character to make the world a better place.

For girls to participate in the 2021 Fall Product Program, one adult from her troop is required to register as the Troop Product Coordinator, maintain active Adult Membership and have a current, eligible background check on file with GSSGC. Online training is scheduled to open September 1, 2021 for approved Coordinators. Troops who complete training by September 13, 2021 will have access to materials to start the program on time.

Troops who complete Training after September 13th may result in starting the program after the start date.

Troops who complete Training after October 15th may result in Online Only Program.

Becoming Me Program Series Girl Scouts of the USA is excited to announce a new program series offering a unique opportunity for Girl Scouts to embark on the journey to becoming their best selves. The Becoming Me program will walk Girl Scouts through earning three badges at each grade level specially curated from the National Program Portfolio in partnership with Penguin Random House and inspired by former First Lady of the United States Michelle Obama’s book Becoming: Adapted for Young Readers. The corresponding Becoming Me program series and exclusive journal activities will offer a unique opportunity for Girl Scouts young and old to have a shared dialogue based on their own experiences.

New Badges released by GSUSA Girl Scouts of the USA (GSUSA) has developed 28 new badges focused on entrepreneurship, math in nature, and digital leadership that embolden girls to navigate a changing society and build the futures they want for themselves and the world. Girl Scouts can now earn new badges that address girls’ evolving interests in ways that resonate with them. The badges also address some of parents’ top concerns for their children as they handle the increasingly digital world, helping girls develop an entrepreneurial mindset toward technology, learn STEM skills while exploring nature, and build confidence and safe practices online.

Ask: How would you like to use your earned cookie money?

Share: Let’s brainstorm ideas for ways to use the troop’s cookie money and then vote on your favorite choice. Next, you’ll set a troop goal so that you can stay on track!

Model how to draw a target using a protractor (or cups, plates, and pot lids).

Ask, “Which goal is the biggest?

That one goes in the middle. goals can go in the Smaller outer rings.” Decide how many cookie packages Brownies will sell to help reach each goal. The outer ring should require fewer packages, and the center ring will need the most. Encourage Brownies to display their target at their cookie booth or have an adult share it online.

HOW TO GET STARTED ON RELIGIOUS RECOGNITIONS

Step 1: Girls must obtain the specific booklet for their religion.

Step 2: Parents must review the program guidelines.

Step 3: Families should talk to their religious leaders and show them the booklet before beginning any program.

Step 4: Girls need to complete the requirements, obtain the proper signatures, and follow the instructions to order the recognition.

RELIGIOUS RECOGNITIONS ⇨ Religious Recognitions may be presented to the girls by clergy in a worship service in the recipient’s congregation. ⇨ Recipients should also be recognized in a Girl Scout setting, such as an awards ceremony.

What is the Faith-Based Programs Coordinator?

“Faith-Based Programs Coordinator” is a position description created by the National Interfaith Committee for Girl Scouting to better integrate Religious Recognitions into the Girl Scout program because “the motivating force in Girl Scouting is a spiritual one.”

Religious Recognitions help girls connect Girl Scouting with their faith and also help strengthen the connection between Girl Scouting and the faith communities. Councils are encouraged to promote the “Faith-Based Programs Coordinator” position to increase the number of girls participating in these programs.

Train the Trainer Trainers! We Need You! Are you passionate about the outdoors or leadership development? Do you have tips and tricks from years of Girl Scouting that you would like to share with other leaders? If this sounds like you–and you’re ready for a new challenge with Girl Scouts–consider becoming a trainer. Trainers collaborate with staff and other trainers to develop and deliver trainings that support the next generation of leaders and adult volunteers who help build girls of courage, confidence, and character.

As a volunteer organization, we are in need of trainers to help provide the most accurate information to new volunteers taking on the leadership role, current volunteers wanting more experience, and older girls wanting to learn additional leadership skills. We also need volunteers willing to assist our council in making sure we are keeping our trainings current and relevant to the needs of our membership. If you love Girl Scouting, this is a great way to volunteer. Trainers are needed in most areas of the council to bring training closer to each Girl Scout service unit. Trainers are adults who work effectively with other adults and/or older girls; serve as role models for adult volunteers; are dedicated to and support the principles of Girl Scouting; like a flexible Girl Scout commitment; and are responsible, dependable and follow through on their commitments.

While San Gorgonio has a lot of our trainings available online, we’ll never stop offering in-person trainings.

We feel that the opportunity to have face-to-face training and the ability to network with like-minded volunteers can never be completely replaced.

We also value the time of our staff and our exceptional volunteer training team. Scheduling, organizing, confirming and preparing for in-person classes takes time for both the Council staff and the volunteer trainer.

Imagine how disappointing it is to have a class with 15-18 participants registered and only 4-5 show up.

This is happening more and more frequently. We understand that life happens and sometimes interferes with our best-laid plans, but with proper notification, prior to the day of the class, your registration can be transferred to another class at a more convenient date.

Effective October 1, 2021 for in-person classes where a participant chooses to “not show up,” the troop account will be swept (ACH withdrawal) by Council for each absent person in the amount of $5.00 per person.

It’s Recognition Nomination Time Again Let’s recognize those amazing people who ran a fantastic program when life was nowhere near normal, and let’s celebrate those out-of-the-box thinkers who didn’t let a little social distancing and a never-know-what’s-coming-next virus slow them down.

We’ve streamlined the recognitions process even more. Fewer questions, fewer fields to complete, and heck, if you’re prepared, you can complete your initial nomination on the first try–no follow-up may be needed.

Nominations open August 1, 2021 and close on December 1, 2021. That’s FOUR whole months to tell us all about the fabulousness going on out there.

Remember, nominations submitted on August 1, 2021 are for the 2021 Membership Year–covering services provided from October 1, 2020 through September 30, 2021.

Any mention of current (Membership Year 2022) services will be discarded and the nomination marked null and void.

Make sure that if you nominate a recipient, part of your responsibility is to inform those you’ve asked to show support of the nomination. Remind them that they need to follow up and submit their own supporting nomination in order for the package to be complete.

Your local recognition volunteers will also be following up with emails. However, nothing beats that personal touch and a reminder of why the nominee is such a fabulous volunteer!

Higher Awards I know we’re all really excited to come back to a “normal” troop year this fall, but don’t forget, there is an important deadline coming.

For those members working on a higher award who also just bridged out of a previous program level, the deadline for your final report is coming up quickly.

Wait. What?? Confusing? Let me explain. If you were a Junior working on her Bronze Award and you just completed 5th grade, you have until September 30, 2021 to complete your project and turn in your final report via email to awards@gssgc.org If you were a Cadette working on your Silver Award and you just completed 8th grade, you have until September 30, 2021 to complete your project and turn in your final report via email to awards@gssgc.org If you were an Ambassador working on your Gold Award and you just completed 12th grade, you have until September 30, 2021 to complete your project and turn in your final report via email to GoGold online.

Everyone that loves camp (and who doesn’t?) was devastated by the need to cancel all summer camp programs in 2020 due to the coronavirus. Girl Scouts recognizes the value of the camp experience, particularly because so many girls spent 16 months in pandemic-related isolation. Understanding the importance of Skyland Ranch to the recovery process, your Council undertook extraordinary safety measures that enabled us to open Skyland Ranch this summer to seven sessions of resident camp. Although circumstances may change, currently our magnificent Skyland Ranch will be available for weekend camps and some special events through the end of 2021.

You will see from the report on the facing page that many improvements were made or are in the works, in spite of the pandemic’s impact on the camp. We hope you will be inspired by the work that’s being done and support Skyland Ranch with a donation. Making necessary improvements is an expensive proposition, but the rewards for you and our girls are immense. And today, more than ever, there is a critical need for outdoor experiences. Latest Updates at Campsites: SKYLAND RANCH:

MAIN RESTROOM–After a few years and a pandemic, the main

restroom is complete!! This is a great asset for guests of Skyland in its location near Duncan Lodge, arrival parking lot and locations for tent camping. The restroom includes six (6) individual access toilet rooms and six (6) individual access shower rooms.

DUNCAN LODGE LANDSCAPING–On May 22, girls and volunteers

gathered to plant and seed the area around Duncan Lodge with wildflower seed, buffalo grass seed and Vinca major. This effort is to soften the landscape around Duncan and possibly cut down on some of the dust in that area of camp. It will take a few years for everything to grow in, but it is looking better already.

APPLE ORCHARD–The new 64 tree orchard is producing apples! It is so exciting that these trees have taken well to the environment of Skyland and are already producing.

SILVER BARN– US BANK ENVIRONMENTAL LEARNING LAB–Buildout to begin

CAMP WIWOCA:

LODGE DECK–The long overdue replacement of the lodge deck at Camp WiWoCa was completed in June. The deck provides access from both sides of the building and sweeping views of the lower campsites.

The US Forest Service has not taken any action yet to repair the road to Dark Canyon Campground/Azalea Trails. The road is passable and Rangers check on the property on a monthly basis. Once the road is fixed by the USFS, Camp Azalea Trails will reopen.

OUR SINCEREST THANKS The Daisy Society What a year! Despite restrictions and challenges, GSSGC volunteers and staff worked together in creative ways for the good of the girls in our communities. Girl Scouts and Girl Scout alumni are resilient and meet challenges without hesitation every time. Zoom became our link to one another. It became our best friend and, sometimes, our worst enemy. Now that the world is cautiously opening back up, much remains to be done for our girls.

COVID meant financial need for more of our Girl Scout families, it created more expenses for our Council with the new protocols for sanitizing and protection. Most of all, our revenue streams from cookie sales, program fees and philanthropy were severely negatively impacted. I am asking for your help. You can make a difference by joining San Gorgonio’s Daisy Society. This is our annual giving society that provides financial resources for the most urgent needs for our girls.
