to the third edition of Food For Thought, where we bring the information directly to you. In this edition you will see we have added some wonderful additions in hopes that they answer a few more of your Girl Scouting questions about our Product Sales Program. I am so pleased to introduce you to the 2013 Cookie Sale Program. Through these beautifully designed pages you will feel the excitement start to build and your dreams begin to soar. Be sure to keep track of those goals! We love the Cookie Program. Why? Because there is nothing that this program can’t teach you, nothing that this program can’t help you learn to achieve. With the five core principals of this program – Business Ethics, Money Management, People Skills, Goal Setting and Decision Making – you are learning the foundations for life. But most importantly you are learning “I can, I will and I did!” The power of the cookie radiates in so many things we do, from making a presentation at school, going after that first job, applying for college and establishing business connections you will carry through life. This program prepares us all for a brighter tomorrow and we have a super fun time doing it. Enjoy the latest edition of Food For Thought and don’t forget… ”Sparkle On!” “E” Elizabeth Locke Thomas V.P. of Retail & Product Sales

Camp Catalina is an exclusive weekend trip for girls who sell 1250+ boxes of cookies. Girls will receive a specially designed Camp Catalina Patch. Girls who reach this level will also be invited to attend the Cali Girl Disney Trip. Camp Catalina will be held on August 16th through August 18th. It will include round-trip bus and boat transportation to Catalina. We have secured a bigger boat this year that rides higher on the water! Girls will sleep in cabins, have all meals prepared for them, and get to swim, snorkel, canoe, hike, star-gaze, go tide-pooling, sing songs, have a campfire, do arts and crafts, play games, play volleyball, meet new friends and have lots of fun. NOTE: Daisies reaching this level will be accompanied by their chaperone.

How to set sales goals by learning

When girls walk into a grocery store, they will know that foods cost money and have value. Family discussions about shopping bills and “saving for a rainy day” will become more meaningful.

How to agree on what to do with their cookie money, and let their customers know their goals.

Young girls are beginning to learn how to make important decisions together. Teamwork helps girls communicate their ideas, listen, compromise, and not get their feelings hurt in the process.

How to talk to customers, count change, and role-play for better customer relations.

Developing a sales pitch and being able to deliver it confidently empowers young girls, and gives them tools to benefit in other areas of their life—from running for student council to convincing their soccer team to practice more.

Ways to set a giving goal to help others through their cookie sales, and how to communicate this to their customers.

Girls develop the positive habit of giving, and begin thinking about how to build philanthropy into their own saving and spending plans.

How to set up a group goal, explore how a small business works, create a cookie sales job list, and track sales.

Women are becoming a dominant force in business—two out of five privately held firms are female-owned. By finding out what it takes to run a business, Girl Scout Juniors can use these same skills in any profession they choose.

Who buys cookies and why. By doing the research, listening for clues, and asking great questions, girls find out what customers want and need.

Girls become savvier sellers and shoppers by exploring their own purchasing power and being aware of what attracts them to a product and compels them to buy (or not!).

Girls develop specific business skills through the “learning lab of the cookie sale.

HIGH SCHOOL PACKAGE My daughter is in high school and has no use for a cookie dough card. REALLY?! WOW!!! Did you know you could “bank” up to three years of your cookie dough towards your High School needs? What kind of High school needs? well... Class rings, cap-n-gown, yearbooks, letterman’s jackets, graduation announcments etc...all the things that are incredibly expensive that YOU can earn on your own through participating in the product sales program and earning nutty/ cookie dough. When you look back and say to yourself, “I did this with my hard work”...that sense of accomplishment never leaves you.

How do we do this? Super easy, that’s how! • Fill out the Cookie Dough Agreement form. • Insure we have your cookie dough card number and attach the card. • Once it is banked you have three years to use it.

How do I access the money? • Fill out the Cookie Dough Check Request form. • Attach an invoice and fill in ALL info in regards to who we are paying (i.e., Jostens for the class ring). • No Invoice NO check – we pay businesses NOT people. Meaning we cannot reimburse individuals. • How soon do you fill out the Cookie Dough Check request form? • Minimum 30 business days before money is needed.

My daughter is a freshman – can we participate in this? YES!!! Deposits are made far in advance on high school items, this program allows you to utilize cookie dough to pay for: • ASB Package • Senior Photos • Year Books all 4 years of high school • Uniforms • Class Rings • Letterman’s Jackets • Etc.

Who do I submit my forms to? • Product Sales – we are your Cookie & Nutty Dough people! • Insure you write “ATTENTION Product Sales – high school package” on your envelope or fax cover sheet.

“ It meant a lot to me to not just be able to get a class ring, but to get a really nice class ring that I probably wouldn’t have been able to justify without Girl Scout help. With college coming up, I probably wouldn’t have purchased a ring if I had to pay for it on my own so it was nice knowing I worked for my ring. It’s also really amazing to have something that honors my commitment to Girl Scouts and it’s an incredible feeling to tell people how I earned my ring and watch them react. People are surprised that Girl Scouts does things like this and it’s nice to be able to testify to how much the organization really does help girls in every aspect of their lives.” Amanda C.

“ Using cookie dough to pay for my announcements and cap/gown gave me the flexibility to spend my money (and my parents’ money) on all those OTHER things that were required my senior year: senior pictures, grad night, prom, AP tests...etc…. It made selling cookies very practical!” Thanks, Girl Scouts! Madeline L.

The High 5 program gives customers the opportunity to win 5 cases of their favorite Girl Scout cookies for themselves and 5 cases donated to Operation Gratitude in their name. Here’s how it works: • Customers that buy five boxes or more during a single purchase from a girl or toop and donate them to the I Care program. • The girl or troop should give the customer a High 5 certificate. Each girl will be given a supply of certificates by her troop. • The customer follows the instructions on the certificate to enter their name in the online High 5 drawing. • The Council will draw the names of six winners in April and ship Girl Scout cookies directly to the winners and to Operation Gratitude in the winner’s name.

The Milk and Cookies break is an alternative way to assist girls in meeting their program goals for the Cookie Program. This is a special promotion that has been designed fr the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council to increase opportunities for cookie booth locations as well as enhance Girl Scout visibility in the business community. Employers from small businesses to large corporations can sponsor a Cookies and Milk break as a way to say thank you to their employees and to show support to your local Girl Scouts. The cookies served to your employees are purchased from, and served by, local girl Scouts. The girls will also have a cookie booth set up with additional cookies for purchase.

PROGRESSIVE Proceeds PLAN (Created by Volunteers for Volunteers) The More You Do, the More You Earn!

The Progressive Proceeds Plan (PPP) formerly known as PIP is a completely new system designed to allow troops the opportunity to earn additional proceeds based on performance. Not only for volume in sales, but more importantly for administrating their sale properly. It is imperative that we stress the importance of using the systems (NutE, SNAP, Wufoo), meeting deadlines and paying their bills. There is still a large amount of additional proceeds available to earn for high sales volume troops based on ranges of boxes sold for troops that qualify. The Progressive Proceeds Plan (PPP for short) will have a variety of milestones which will be assigned a dollar amount. At the end of the Cookie Sale, the earned amounts will be calculated and that amount will be deducted from your final payment due to Council. If you don’t qualify for one milestone (i.e., miss a deadline, didn’t participate in the Online Magazine Sale), you still have many more opportunities to earn bonus funds for your troop (unlike the past where it was “all or none”). With this new program, your troop can earn MORE money during cookies! Did you attend fall live training? Your troop proceeds (to be received at the end of the Cookie Sale) went up! Meet important deadlines? Your troop proceeds goes up! And with each one of the milestones listed below for the Fall Product Sale, your troop profit will increase! The More You Do, the More You Earn!!! Fall Product milestones will include: Parents getting information to Leaders on time, helps Leaders keep the troop on track. Parents: Did you know that turning your order cards in to your troop late can cost your troop bonuses? • Attend Fall Product REGIONAL TRAINING • Participate in the NUT & CANDY Sale • Participate in the MAGAZINE Sale • Participate in the ONLINE Magazine Sale

• Record all detailed order reports from QSP program • Meet all DEADLINES for the Fall Product sale • All Fall Product SWOOP & SWEEPS Clear the Bank • Pick-up Fall Product INCENTIVES by the deadline

amp & Tri C w 3 1 e i 0 v e r p P 2 Welcome to another exciting year of Girl Scouts. As your daughter plans for next summer make sure to check out the 2013 resident camp and travel preview, where campers can find some past favorites and some new adventures. Camp Azalea Trails, our Council camp, is located at over 6,400 feet in a beautiful canyon with a tranquil stream near Idyllwild, California. While nestled among the tall pine trees, campers can enjoy the natural world around them while hiking, creating crafts, playing games, cooking outdoors, fencing, shooting archery, splashing on the slip & slide, riding horses, creating memories, and building skills that will last them a lifetime including making new friends and learning about different countries from our international staff.

Camp Azalea Trails & the Girl Scout Advantage We know girls have lots of summer choices and they join Girl Scouts “to be with friends” and to “have fun.” This is why we believe Girl Scout camp should be one of your daughter’s choices. Girl Scout camp counselors are caring adults who want to help girls grow while they are having fun with their friends. Girl Scout camp creates opportunities for girls to develop values, talents, skills and abilities to last a lifetime. In this all-girl setting, camp counselors encourage girls to: • Develop social skills • Build independent thinking skills

• Develop and practice leadership skills • Build self-confidence • Develop responsibility • Discover talents and interests • Turn dreams into reality

Girls can help make camp affordable by setting cookie goals, using their Nutty Dough Card to pay the deposit, start recycling from friends and neighbors, apply for partial camperships, or request the gift of camp instead of other gifts. Make sure to register early to ensure your spot, even though you might be waiting for cookie dough.

See you at camp soon, Joyce “Buttons” Knoll Camp Manager

Cookies Travel

COOKIE Power!

What can a girl do with Cookie DoughHow about see the World!

With my 4 Troops I have traveled to Rome -three times, Paris, twice, London three times, Florence, Venice, Siena, Hawaii, NYC three times, Washington DC two times, with tow Mexican Cruises, San Francisco’s twice, Yosemite, and the Grand Canyon and I am sure I have missed a few places. How did we do all of that? EASY! We sold Cookies! Using our Cookie Dough allowed us to pay for Hotels and transportation. I have girls who did nothing but sell Cookies and use their Cookie dough to help pay for their trips. Most of our trips were a 2-year Goal, and several were 3-year goals, but we did it. As Cadettes, my first troop traveled to New York City and Washington DC. It was hard work, but they were determined to make it happen and they did. As we left the plane, I had a girl ask if we could save for a trip to London. We had a sister troop we had been in communication with and she wanted to visit them. I immediately told the troop NO. Not confident myself, I soon learned that these girls had gained confidence, self esteem and a growing love of travel, and for 6 months they hounded me to give in. I told them they would have to come up with a plan and bank their Cookie Dough and SAVE. Two years later we were off to Paris, Geneva Switzerland and London for a 12-day trip. As we exited our plane this time, my girls informed me that they DID this themselves, and IF they can do this they can do anything! They can work and make it through College, they can succeed in anything they put their minds to. All went to College, and that one girl who said she would “work” her way through College just finished her Masters Degree! By Linda Siems
