Food for Thought Cookies 2013
A Message from Cynthia Our Food for Thought cover theme--Change the World, it’s cookie time—started me thinking about how Girl Scouts and the Cookie Program changed my world. Do you remember the five skills you can learn by selling cookies? I sure do, because they turned out to be keys to my success in life—not just in my career, but in my family life as well. My path to becoming Chief Executive Officer of Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio was not a straight line from school until today. But even though the road had many twists and turns, I always set goals and I always had a plan. Over the years I’ve reached many of my career goals, but only because my Girl Scout cookie selling experience gave me courage and taught me how to make many decisions, big and small. Imagine trying to lead a Girl Scout council without knowing how to manage money. Every year I need to make a budget and choose wisely about how our Girl Scout council’s money is spent. Imagine being a single mother, as I once was, and trying to give your children what they need without knowing how to make a budget. I’m forever grateful that selling cookies taught me how to handle money. Then there are the people skills I learned by talking to my Girl Scout cookie customers. You can see how important it is for me to know how to talk to people in the job I have today. People skills also meant working with my sister Girl Scouts as a member of the team, helping my whole troop succeed. Today, I get to encourage San Gorgonio’s girls, leaders, adult volunteers, and Council staff members to all work as a team to help every girl succeed. My life is filled with good things, one of the best being you—the Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio. Without business ethics and personal ethics, the good life would have passed me by. From the time I was very young, I was told about the importance of being honest and acting responsibly. But the Girl Scout program was one of the first places where I put that knowledge to the test! Since then, not a day has gone by that I have not had to make the choice to be honest and to do the right thing. Like mine, your path in life will have many turns. Like me, your sister Girl Scouts and the five skills learned selling cookies will keep you safe and make you successful. I hope you are as grateful as I am for the chance to sell Girl Scout cookies and learn skills that will guide you to a good and successful life.

WHAT WHAT CAN CAN A A GIRL GIRL SCOUT SCOUT COOKIE COOKIE DO?? DO?? Girl Scout Troop 340 in Redlands was formed 6 years ago to provide a place for my daughter, who has Down syndrome, to socialize with other girls of similar abilities. We have grown from 5 girls, to 11 girls, all with varying levels of special needs. Our first year as a troop, our girls didn’t show much interest in selling Girl Scout cookies. Over the years, as the girls realized that cookie sales provided them with the funds to go on adventurous outings, their cookie sales increased. Each year, the girls are asked to set their own goals for cookie sales, and to decide as a group how they want to spend their profits. This year our girls all had the same goal… to sell at least 750 boxes of Girl Scout cookies each so they could go to the finale year of Disneyland CaliGirl with their Girl Scout sisters! They also wanted to go to a fun camp that would challenge them to reach new heights. Our Girl Scouts LOVE to go camping! Every year we have planned a campout, including troop camping at WiWoCa, Azalea Trails, and Camp Whittle in Big Bear. The girls have learned about outdoor cooking, fire safety, wilderness hiking, rock wall climbing, horsemanship, sailing, and “leave no trace” camping. Proudly this year, the girls met their cookie goals; they ALL sold at least 750 boxes of Girl Scout cookies! With their cookie profits, the girls chose to go to YMCA Camp Surf in San Diego. Despite their special requirements, every girl in the troop attended Camp Surf. They faced their fears, challenged themselves, and hit the water, either body boarding or on surfboards. To see the ear to ear smiles on the girls’ faces, hear the squeals of laughter and excitement, and listen as they very proudly say “I did it”, is an awe-inspiring moment as a Girl Scout Leader. So many memories have been made by our girls, and lifetime friendships have been forged. My Girl Scout families tell me that, if not for Girl Scouts and profits from Girl Scout cookie sales, their girls may have never had these amazing opportunities. Very special girls enjoying very special adventures! THAT is what a Girl Scout cookie can do!!!

As a Girl Scout cookie time has not only given me many rewards like Cali Girl and Catalina, but also has changed the way I feel about myself. Before I became a Girl Scout I was shy and kept to myself. After my first cookie sale I was able to talk to people and became more confident in doing things. I knew that if I could sell cookies to complete strangers I could do anything I put my mind too. Cookie sales have taught me three things confidence, how to make a goal and that hard work gets you where you want to be! I love selling cookies and being a San Gorgonio Girl Scout!!
Anaiyah
i, my name is Anaiyah. I am a junior girl scout. When I think of selling cookies, I think of H dedication and commitment. Before I begin to sell cookies, I set my goals and figure out ways to accomplish them. After school, I visit all the teachers at my school and church and talk to them about Girl Scouts. I let them know my goals for that year, and they gladly support me. I have been able to build customers each year by developing relationships and networking with people in my community and neighborhood. I wouldn’t be able to be a top-seller without my family.
High School Package My daughter is in high school and has no use for a cookie dough card. REALLY?! WOW!!! Did you know you could “bank” up to three years of your cookie dough towards your High School needs? What kind of High school needs? well... Class rings, cap-n-gown, yearbooks, letterman’s jackets, graduation announments, etc...all the things that are incredibly expensive that YOU can earn on your own through participating in the product sales program and earning nutty/ cookie dough. When you look back and say to yourself, “I did this with my hard work”...that sense of accomplishment never leaves you.
How do we do this? Super easy, that’s how! • Fill out the Cookie Dough Agreement form. • Ensure we have your cookie dough card number and attach the card. • Once it is banked you have three years to use it.
How do I access the money? • Fill out the Cookie Dough Check Request form. • Attach an invoice and fill in ALL info in regards to who we are paying (e.g., Jostens for the class ring). • No Invoice NO check – we pay businesses NOT people. Meaning we cannot reimburse individuals. • How soon do you fill out the Cookie Dough Check request form? Minimum 30 business days before money is needed.
My daughter is a freshman – can we participate in this? YES!!! Deposits are made far in advance on high school item. This program allows you to utilize cookie dough to pay for: • ASB Package • Senior Photos • Year Books all 4 years of high school • Uniforms • Class Rings • Letterman’s Jackets • And much more
Who do I submit my forms to? • Product Sales – we are your Cookie & Nutty Dough people! • Insure you write “ATTENTION Product Sales – high school package” on your envelope or fax cover sheet.
“Being able to use my Cookie Dough to pay for my cap and gown and other graduation items my senior year in high school has been very helpful, with graduation costing so much. I am able to see that cookie sales I do for Girl Scouts not only helps me go places and do things with Girl Scouts, but also is able to pay for something I need outside of Girl Scouts. I’m extremely happy knowing that part of my graduation costs are paid by Girl Scouts because of the cookies I sell every year.” Angela C.

Sisters in your troop? Think it’s too difficult for sisters to sell AND achieve? Sister “ Plan” Pilot for Cookies (if you want to combine your sisters)….Here is info you will need to know, and approve, with your leaders. Yet another way for sister to find success!
Sist tes ers tam You need to understand the following oni We understand and agree to the following guidelines. (Initial Each) •W e certify that the sisters we are combining are related sisters, not just girls residing in the same household. •W e understand that Council staff and/or Regional Team Products volunteers will combine the individual SNAP totals to arrive at actual total sold by each set of sisters – do not mess with the numbers in SNAP. •W e understand that each set of sisters will only receive one set of rewards with the exception of patches and walkabout. This means the sisters are all working together for one set, not multiple items. •W e understand that each girl will receive a participation patch and that the total combined sales will be divided by the number of sisters to determine equal rocker bars. •W e understand that walkabout will be awarded to each individual girl that reaches the individual goal of 200 Boxes Sold and $800 deposited by the deadline of as defined in SNAP. •W e understand that transferring cookies between sisters on our own will result in this agreement being null and void, and the girl rewards will be distributed as defined in SNAP. •W e understand that the sisters we are combining and have listed on the sister plan “may” qualify for top selling Sisters but may NOT be top selling Council Individual/age level or overall top seller.

Hi Girl Scouts. My name is Amanda and I am currently on my 13th and final year as a girl Girl Scout. Throughout my years Girl Scouts has provided me and my sister Courtney many wonderful experiences full of excitement, adventure, life lessons, and of course, a-bit of sparkle! Not everything came easy though. As any (blood-related) sister Girl Scouts would know, your product sales, whether it be fall product or cookies, have a way of getting “split.” Many times scouts complain “it isn’t fair” and “we have to do twice the work” but, what they don’t always see is they also have twice the selling power. With a sister I have a teammate to support me and push me. Okay, we might have to go through twice the amount of neighborhoods to reach our goals but we also go through a neighborhood twice as fast. The dynamics of being sisters is important and together we have achieved our own personal goals of being 1250+ cookie sellers (and, yes, at the same time). Together Courtney and I have learned that the Girl Scout program has a way of giving back, especially through the High School Package. We both go to very unique high schools. I go to Nuview Bridge Early College High School (a charter school) and she goes to California Military Institute. As older scouts and parents may know, high school can be expensive, and when you add on college courses and military and sports uniforms it can get outrageous. Thankfully through Girl Scouts we were able to turn the number of cookies we sold into money towards high school. Courtney has purchased her school uniform and dance team uniform thorough cookie sales and was able to attend dance camp. I have been able to acquire a class ring, yearbook, prom tickets, etc; which has allowed me to save more money for the college aspect of my school. With the help of Girl Scouts I am graduating high school in May of 2014 with both an AA and an AS. Overall, sure, working hard is important but there is something that matters even more: believing in yourself … and your sister.

Working together as sisters to sell Girl Scout cookies has helped us both succeed, in Girl Scouts and beyond. Reaching goals is a lot easier when you have each others’ support. There’s so much responsibility with counting cases and money, inventorying stock and most importantly, communicating with the public about both the cookies and our goals. Speaking to people you don’t know can be scary, however it’s a lot easier when you have the support of your sister! If one of us forgets to mention something, the other usually remembers; and you have more confidence when you know there’s somebody right there rooting you on. We have found that cookie sales have given us confidence to do other things we might not have otherwise tried. We both are in 4H and recently showed animals, welding and baking projects at the fair. Going into the ring to show animals, answer questions about how we’ve raised them and performing in Showmanship and Auction has been less scary because of the things we’ve learned all the years we’ve sold Girl Scout cookies! We’ve learned to relax, to be ourselves, and that no matter what, you’ve got your family cheering for you. Rowan received Supreme Grand Champion Tom Turkey at the Perris Fair, and I received second in Turkey Showmanship, among other first and second place ribbons for our animal, welding and baking projects. Our mom shared how proud she was of us both, and how among seven fair champion recipients, my sister Rowan who’s eight was the only one who shook the nands of the fair president, vice president and city mayor at the belt buckle ceremony. Sierra is Corresponding Secretary of our 4H club and believes that the life skills and confidence received selling cookies has given her the courage and self confidence to hold a leadership position and to work among others both on the club’s board and among the members. Giving speeches and presenting at fair are skills we believe we’ve received from working together all these years selling cookies. Teamwork, especially sister teamwork, makes great things happen!

OUR I CARE COMMUNITY PARTNERS Each year Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio strives to expand our I Care partnerships within our communities. Some of our current partners include:
The High 5 program gives customers the opportunity to win 5 cases of their favorite Girl Scout cookies for themselves and 5 cases donated to the charity of their choice in their name. Here’s how it works: • Customers that buy five boxes or more during a single purchase from a girl or toop and donates them to the I Care program recieves a Good Deed Doer ticket. • The girl or troop should give the customer a Good Deed Doer. Each girl will be given a supply of ticket • The customer follows the instructions on the ticket to enter their name in the onlineGood Deed Doer. • The Council will draw the names of six winners in March nand ship Girl Scout cookies directly to the winners and to the charity of their choice in the winner’s name.
Mobile Payments Program DID YOU KNOW? Council offers a MOBILE PAYMENTS program to Troops and Individual Girl Scouts that give them the opportunity to accept Credit Card payments for fall product and magazines! Any participant with a compatible smartphone or tablet and 3G/4G data plan may sign up through Council to receive an account and card reader.
WHAT WILL IT COST? There are no fees to sign up, receive a card reader, or to use the program as directed by Council. Hand entered/keyed transactions do carry an additional transaction charge that the user/participant will be responsible for.
HOW DO I SIGN UP? Fill out our Mobile Payment interest form at http://bit.ly/payanywhere_gssgc

Why I Care The Girl Scouts of San Gorgonio Council’s I Care program involves the cookie program, the nut and candy sale, as well as local food drives held in regional areas. We believe that in order to be a leader within your community, you have to truly become a part of that community. Girl Scouts offers girls the unique opportunity to identify and support issues that are important to them, form partnerships with other people, businesses and organizations and create sustainable projects that change the world around them. The I Care Program supports military service people, local food banks, fire and rescue, police and sheriffs departments, women’s shelters, Ronald McDonald houses, camps and several other community organizations. People purchasing Girl Scout cookies and snacks can choose to donate product as gifts to any one of these deserving organizations.
It is an honor and a privilege to be able to help those men and women who risk their lives in any way my family can… And we ALWAYS WILL!!! Thank you Girl Scouts for creating this wonderful program and thank you to ALL THE MEN AND WOMEN IN ALL MILITARY BRANCHES ACROSS THE NATION AND THOSE OVER SEAS, WHO CANNOT BE WITH THEIR FAMILIES!!! Step 2
Cozette’s 2013
Costa Rican A dventure
The summer of 2013 was one of the most exciting summers I have ever experienced. In July I traveled to Costa Rica with Girl Scouts from all over the country. This was my first time going out of the country without my parents, and the only reason I was able to do so was because I was going with the Girl Scouts and I had saved two years of fall product and cookie proceeds to help pay for my trip. I always have had an interest in the rainforest, wildlife, and science; so going to Costa Rica was the perfect opportunity to explore wildlife and the rainforest. As a bonus, I inherited five new scouting sisters. We had numerous unbelievable adventures, zip lining, kayaking, and night hikes. We hiked to beautiful La Fortuna Falls; it was an exhausting hike down 500 steps, when we reached the falls it was absolutely beautiful and well worth every step. I was able to experience Costa Rican culture firsthand by visiting an elementary school, a science center, plant trees, and partaking in fabulous coffee and cuisine. This trip was not only educational but also fun. I would highly recommend traveling with Girl Scouts and banking proceeds from product sales to help pay for the trip. Doing so will lead to an adventure you will never forget. Cozette

50/50 booths, formerly known as “buddy booths,” include booth sales conducted by girls in same troop, or two girls from different troop or Juliettes who take their own cookies to sell at a booth and split the sales among themselves. 50/50 Booths
are OK
• When the entire stock of troop cookies are distributed to all participating girls. There aren’t any troop cookies remaining and no troop inventory remains. Girls are individually and financially responsible for the cookies being sold. Parents need to sign a contract with their Troop Leader/Troop Cookie Coordinator, stating they agree to this way of selling cookies. Cookies are not put in the booth calculator, because they are individual girl cookies. • i f an entire troop of girls has decided to stop selling at booths, and there is a girl in the troop that is still selling and trying to reach her goals. • if your troop is scheduled for a booth and one girl/adult cancels last minute and no one else from your troop can work it. The sales for that girl MUST be placed into the booth calculator spreadsheet and divided equally as troop booth sales. HOWEVER~ if all troop girls have stopped selling, then the girl that is still selling as 50/50 should not be in the calculator.
50/50 Booths
are not OK
• when one girl from a troop is doing “buddy” selling on the side and receiving the full 50% credit for those booths, while the rest of the troop is selling together and their sales are being calculated on the booth calculator as even/equal distribution based on man hours worked. • selling with a buddy when someone from your troop is available to work the booth.

How to agree on what to do with their cookie money, and let their customers know their goals.
Young girls are beginning to learn how to make important decisions together. Teamwork helps girls communicate their ideas, listen, compromise, and not get their feelings hurt in the process.
How to talk to customers, count change, and role-play for better customer relations.
Developing a sales pitch and being able to deliver it confidently empowers young girls, and gives them tools to benefit in other areas of their life—from running for student council to convincing their soccer team to practice more.
Ways to set a giving goal to help others through their cookie sales, and how to communicate this to their customers.
Girls develop the positive habit of giving, and begin thinking about how to build philanthropy into their own saving and spending plans.
How to set up a group goal, explore how a small business works, create a cookie sales job list, and track sales.
Women are becoming a dominant force in business—two out of five privately held firms are female-owned. By finding out what it takes to run a business, Girl Scout Juniors can use these same skills in any profession they choose.
Who buys cookies and why. By doing the research, listening for clues, and asking great questions, girls find out what customers want and need.
Girls become savvier sellers and shoppers by exploring their own purchasing power and being aware of what attracts them to a product and compels them to buy (or not!).

Girls develop specific business skills through the “learning lab” of the cookie sale.
Share Family Partnership Did you know that as a Girl Scout you can personally donate towards the Share Family Partnership by using your Cookie/ Nutty dough? Did you know that a donation of $20 can mean the difference between a girl being able to be a Girl Scout for a full year or not being able to afford it? You know what being a Girl Scout means to you; that making memories, having friends and belonging to something that makes the world a better place is important. Now imagine if you could not do that because $20 a year was simply too much money for your family to afford. As we enter the second century of Girl Scouts, times have changed. Juliette’s vision has not. We must provide assistance to every girl in financial need. Make it possible for every Girl Scout yo join the San Gorgonio Council family, so that they can develop leadership skills and be a part of the greatest girl movment in the nation. Girl Scouts who use Cookie or Nutty dough to donate to the Share Family Partnership can earn the i am philanthropic patch – created only for Girl Scouts who share their own funds. How do you do give the gift of Girl Scouts? You can indicate the Share Family Partnership on your registration. Just write your cookie dough number and the amount. We will handle the rest.
YOU CAN HELP! Please donate to the SHARE Family Partnership.

Get connected! Did you know that our San Gorgonio Facebook has updated information about our sale throughout the entire sale? Information is accessible at all times, if you are merely connected to our council. We place information in many places; e.g., GSSGC website, this FFT magazine, the Family guide to cookies, and in emails we send out periodically from council. As a parent or guardian, you are responsible for locating the information that you need. While we supply our leaders with the information you need, it is not solely their responsibility to be knowledgeable about the sale. You share that responsibility. As do our girls. We are building strong leaders and that starts today with insuring that you have the connections you need to find the information to help you find success.
